Illustrator CS 5.5 has memory issues when I create "distressed" looking art.

I work in a screen printing company and we often get requests for art work with a "distressed" look. I usually creat the art work and fake a distressed look with a grunge brush that I expand and unite with the pathfinder tool. I then color it to the substrate color, or white for creating seperations. The "negative space" becomes individual paths that cause lagging on my computer.
We recently upgraded to a computer w/ 64bit processor w/ 8 GB of Ram (though even on the old computer, we had the same issue).
My issue lies in that when I create multiple versions of this art. I get a warning about lack of available memory (which we should have plenty, as this when I save the files it takes significantly longer than other artwork).  I have adjusted the scratch disk settings to work of an external drive.  But when I make too many copies (which I have to do for the sepperation process) a warning window shows up that says:
"Can't Finish previewing. Could not repeat the requested operation."
and it switches to a wireframe preview.  Then if I try to save, it says "An unknown error has occured."
I've attached images to illustrate this problem.  I had to do quite a few more copies of the art to illustrate the point, but significant resources are lost and I am usually unable to save my work when this happens.  I often have to do color seperations, so this requires multiple versions of the same art.  I've lost many hours on this "bug".
Is there any tips, resources or anything available that you can let me know so this stops happening.  Distressed logos are in style, and I can't tell my employers that I can't do them when they bought a new computer to handle the limitaions of the old one.  This same thing has happend on both the old computer and the new one.

You're workflow is the problem. You are trying to use a vector program to emulate raster-based results, and trying to solve the resulting problem by brute force (throwing additional hardware resources at it).
There are several very widespread misconceptions associated with this commonplace scenario, stemming from confusion between the concepts of vector-based artwork versus raster-based artwork--as opposed to line art versus continuous-tone artwork.
Silkscreen printing does not necessarily require vector-based artwork. It does, however, often require line art. But line art can be vector-based, raster-based, or a combination of the two.
Mathematically-defined shapes and algorithmically-derived interpolation (blends, grads, etc.) are the purview of vector graphics. Granular detail and texture are the purview of raster-based imaging.
There is no reason for you to insist on using a kazillion individual tiny, irregularly-shaped vector paths combined into a huge compound path in order to simulate a so-called "distressed" texture. Just use a 1-bit or 8-bit (with alpha transparency channel) raster image for the texture. Color it white and position it in front of the vector-based elements and print your separations.
Alternatively, take your vector-based content to your raster imaging program, rasterize/separate it to appropriate spot color channels and apply your textures there.
You'll find that you don't need additional hardware resources and that you have much more texture versatility.

    I have a user that has an issue when printing to PDF. When printing to PDF the PC will intermittently freeze and sometimes the print spooler will crash taking all other printers offline. A reboot clears it up for a while but then it comes back.

    Windows 7 x64
    Office 2010 Professional
    Any help would be great!  Thanks

    I manage a network of 30,000 + workstations all with Acrobat Pro 10.  Upon upgrading to 10.1.10, they all exhibited similar symptoms printing to the PDF printer.  The problem is most obvious in IE 11, it will cause the browser to stop responding, however it seems to depend on the page being viewed.  For example we can print google.com, but not yahoo.com.
    And of course there is no method to roll back to 10.1.9, other than to completely remove and re-install Acrobat.
    I hope this is getting addressed soon!

  • How do I get rid of memory issue when exporting in imovie

    How do I get rid of memory issue when exporting in imovie?

    Delete the content that is filling it up. Text messages, iMessages, SMS, emails, Safari Cache; essentially all data for all of the built in apps.

  • Premiere Pro CS3-CONSTANT Memory issues when editing/rendering/exporting

    Alright, as said in the title I am currently using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, and my issues are horrendous
    No matter what, within 10 minutes of editing, Premiere will warn and then crash because of memory issues, starting with the message:
    "Adobe Premiere Pro is running very low on system memory; please save your project and proceed with caution"
    Also, whenever I try to export this project, within 800 frames of a 7000 frame project (currently), it displays the message:
    "Error Compiling Movie", and then the previous message above if that hasn't already happened before
    And eventually, the program will crash out of nowhere, with random windows errors
    Here's my specs:
    Intel i7 920 Processor
    6 GB DDR3 RAM
    Nvidia 480 GTX
    750 watt power supply
    24" Dell Ultrasharp Monitor
    Now, I've noticed that whenever Premiere is getting close to crashing, my RAM gets up to around 4.7 GB being used, and then it crashes.
    I have already gone into Edit-Preferences and tried switching from Performance to Memory; that hasn't fixed anything
    I noticed that when I was just running my video over and over again, it stayed stable at 4 GB or so, so maybe its a rendering issue?
    I have already tried lowering my number of processes running at any given time, including my antivirus program (Kaspersky) and even explorer, but it still crashes no matter what.
    ========================================================================================== ========
    This is a SERIOUS issue for me, as even with all the normal crashes I could finish the video; but now I cannot even export my video at ALL without it crashing, and I have a plenty strong-enough computer to handle this, so what gives?
    Please help

    Ok, well this has been getting me nowhere
    I tried importing (both my CTRL-X method, and literally importing the project), and now the program won't even RENDER the footage, it just errors out at 800 frames (just like exporting)
    What is going on???
    I used to use Premiere Pro 2.0 all the time, on a separate computer, but I have 6 GB of RAM, is this really impossible???
    EDIT:
    And now, even after finally getting it to render (by saving after rendering before what crashed, and then starting it up and rendering again), all my footage looks like crap XP

  • Having a memory issue when trying to process a movie

    I am trying to process a movie using iMovie 6 (I've posted on the iMovie forum as well, but with no response so far) which has always worked fine in the past, but now I seem to be having a memory issue. The movie is 977.9 MB.  At the bottom of the iMovie is says that I have 24.4 GB available.  When I checked the information on the Secondary 120 GB Hardrive which is where the movie is saved, it also said 24.4 GB available.  However, when I process the movie, I immediately get the message "Disk Space is Running Low.  Burning this movie will require approximately 1.74 GB of disk space, which is less than you have right now."  I deleted more items and freed up more space - 32 GB (according to the movie), but it still wouldn't run.  Could it have something to do with iMovie trying to use the startup disk instead of the secondary hardrive which has more memory? Can you help me with allocating more memory so I can process this movie by Thanksgiving?  Thanks!

  • Out of memory issue when executing wlappc ant task

    I am using weblogic 8.1 sp1 and doing a compilation for a little bit large EAR file using ant task. But it always throws out of memory error when the wlappc invoked the compiler to compile the jsp files.
    According to BEA's documentation<CR104610>, I put the runtimeflags with "-J-ms256m -J-mx512m" option into the wlappc tag and Ant seems recognizing this option but it didn't work. I tried every possible memory size to get rid of this problem, but the process still failed with the error message:
    The system is out of resources.
    Consult the following stack trace for details.
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    - with nested exception:
    [Compilation errors : ]
    My computer has 1G memory, so it shouldn't be the hardware problem.
    Does anyone have an idea on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jacky

    Hi,
    Ant seems to use its own JVM and thus in the javac options during runtime,try specifying ANT java options for setting the memory parameters.
    ANT options would be memoryInitialSize and memoryMaximumSize.

    Hope this helps.

  • Top Link Causes out of memory issue when millions of records need to update

    Hello everyone,
    I am using TopLink 9.0.4 in a batch process. The batch process reads from the temp table(temp table has millions of records one month worth of data which need be updated). The database being used is sqlserver 2005. Below is the snippet of code. It works for 6-7 hours and crashes after that due of out of memory:
    ExpressionBuilder expressionBuilder = new ExpressionBuilder();
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery("Select * from database tablename where field= 'done'");
    while(rs!=null && rs.next()){
    *//where vo is the value object obtained from the rs row by row*
    if (updateInfo(vo, user,expressionBuilder )){
                   logger.info("updated : "+ rs.getString("col_name"));
                   projCount++;
    rs.close();
    st.close();
    private boolean updateInfo(ProjectVO vo, YNUser tcUser,expressionBuilder ) {
              boolean updated;
              updated = false;
              try {
                   updated = true;
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   logger.warn("update: caused exception, "
                             + e.getMessage());

    Thanks for your reply.
    Please find below the answers to you suggestions/concerns:
    You seem to be using raw JDBC to select all of the records in a single result set, not sure if this may be causing a memory issue. You could try paging through the results instead.
    Ans: I have modified the code to get me 1000 records each time and I am getting the ResultSet by using PrepartedStatement instead of regular Statement object.
    What type of caching are you using?
    Ans: No caching is being used. If you have some thoughts on caching please suggest or put some sample code. Again there is no AppServer is being used, its just a regular java process(Batch process) so I dont know how to do caching in a simple java process.
    You may also wish to try the latest 9.0.4 patch release, or try the 10.1.3 version, or the latest EclipseLink 2.0 release.
    Ans: Where can I find the latest patch release 9.0.4?
    Any help/suggestion is really appreciated!

  • Memory issues when saving Excel

    All
    I recently wrote a small piece of software which is collecting data at a very high frequency and for a long time. This is the first time I am attempting to do something like this and have hit an issue with memory not being enough as the size of the Excel file increased.
    Excel has a limit of about 65000 rows, but I have written only ~10000 rows when the following error showed up:
    I can briefly tell you how the data acquisition loop works:
    1) timed loop has a period of 1 minute.
    2) there is a sequence structure in the loop.
    3) first - a sub vi goes to agilent equipment and collects all the data
    4) second - a sub vi processes all the data into individual arrays in preparation for writing them to the excel file
    5) third - a sub vi writes all the arrays into a single Excel file (which is already open) and saves the file
    6) then the timed loop checks if the condition is met for termination of the loop. If not, then it repeats steps 3, 4, 5 above.
    Possible issues that may be causing the problem:
    The period of 1 minute may not be enough. I checked the size of the excel file, and it is right now 23 MB at ~10000 rows. I intend to collect about 20000 rows of data over 250 hours. Now what will happen if 1 minute is not enough to save the Excel file of size 23 MB or above? I am not familiar with timed loops, but can somebody explain will I get an error similar to above if that happens?
    How can I create a functionality where the timed loop "waits"  till the Excel file is saved? I basically want the timed loop to keep counting (not stop time) but wait till file is completely saved. In that case the period of timed loop cannot be fixed to 1 minute.  Because as the size of the file increases that period has to increase too.
    Appreciate all the help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks.
    I am attaching the main vi of the application where the main timed loop is located. Hopefully this will help.
    Could you please elaborate about buffers?
    About the data acquisition freqency : I am acquiring data every minute  - and the intentiion is to do it for 250 hours at least.
    Thanks.

  • Memory issue when attempting to open a downloaded ...

    When attempting to open a downloaded image, I get this message 'IMAGE VEWER: Memory full. Close some applications and try again'.
    What could be the issue & how do I solve this?
    Thanks

    I assume re-transferring the image didn't help?
    Under normal circumstances, a 1.3 MB image can't be a problem, since the camera takes pictures around that size.  But the phone doesn't have limitless memory, so the image viewer will have some limitations.  I was able to duplicate your error just now, but only with an 8.4 MB image I found through Google Images.  The resolution was 3880 x 2432 x 24 bit.  If you view the image on a computer, maybe that innocent 1.3 MB file translates into something of similar size, or perhaps it uses an unusual bit depth?  Given the size, that still seems far-fetched, but short of an image viewer bug, that's the only possibility that comes to mind.
    If this is the case and you do need to keep the picture accessible, you'd want to load it into a Photoshop-like program and either crop it, add additional compression, or reduce the bit depth.  Good luck!

  • ACR 8.1 "Out of Memory" issue when processing over 70 - 24mb files

    Good Morning Folks,
    I've recently upgraded my computer to Win 7 and then to PS CS6 Extended.  Now when I process RAW files in ACR 8.1, I get an "Out of Memory" error if I do more than 70 ~ 80 - 24 mb files.  Also, it's running really slow.  It's taking nearly 50 seconds to process 1 - 24 mb file where PS CS3 and ACR 4.X it took only 17 for the same size file.
    Computer Specs; 3.40Ghz, 4GB RAM (max for the mother board), 120 GB HD "C", 40 GB Scratch Drive, Win 7
    What I have done is made sure that the scratch drive is listed first for cache in both PS and ACR, then in ACR, set the cache to nearly 500,000. (I think these numbers are correct, I'm not at the offending computer now)
    So the questions are; do I need to make any changes to specific setting?  Does PS CS6 and ACR 8.1 require more RAM?
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Captain 1854

    When getting a new computer get a big enough C drive to hold all the programs and still have at least 50% free for future expansion (should always have 15% free).
    Best if you have a separate internal HD for scratch, so computer can read program and write to scratch at same time.
    Get a mid range video card with 1 gig VRAM.
    Win7 better than Win8.

    The RSC Software was also removed from the System.
    The has PC's connected as terminals on the ethernet using telnet.
    Now the system was found to go into a sleep state once or twice a day and the user had to kill all the running processes and restart the system.
    Is there any Way we can make the system work properly till we get the replacement card.

    Try reseating the card as perhaps it's not in quite right. What power supply do you exactly have? (Will say on the sticker on the side of the unit)
    Update to the latest graphics card drivers too. >>nVidia Drivers<<
    About a month or so ago when I was dusting out my PC I checked to make sure it was seated properly, so it was all the way in.  I have already tried downloading drivers for it three times. (First time when the card was first installed, and twice since then when it pissed me off enough to try trouble shooting myself.)  But I'll go ahead and download the latest drivers again, just to make sure.
    The power supply:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182022  That's it. (Is linking to Newegg okay?)  A Rosewill RD450-2-DB.
    Also, other people have reported this problem on the newegg page for this specific graphics card.
    Lorenzo's comment in the 2 egg reviews specifically is pretty much what happens to me.  (Though we have two different PC's.)
