Illustrator CS 5 palettes smart - a little too smart for me.

I have come out of the CS 3 age and CS 5 is throwing me some curves because it is so 'helpful.'
What I really need help with is controlling the behavior of palettes: When I am working, the palettes keep changing according to what I am doing. I would like to not have palettes change.
I work intently with layers and it is aggrivating to find my layers palette has changed or disappeared so I have to go into the windows pull-down to check layers again so I can keep working.
Is there any way I can stop the unhelpful behavior of palettes disappearing and, or, changing while I am working with a variety of tools? I need my Layers palette to stay put and not be affected by any work I am doing.
Solving this would help put me back to productive work.
TIA,
Ken

Drag the layer panel in the centre of the windows...hence you will do that you can expand the pallete with the "two black arrow button" on top left right of pallette.
Then you can move the pallette wherever you want and it will not close.
This  sounds even more interesting, but I will need to explore what you say here on my computer in Illustrator to see how that works. If it leads to keeping the palette open without it deciding to close on it's own initiative, then it will be great.
I am closing down shop right now so will try both of the ideas given in these posts tomorrow and report back, hopefully with good news.
I was able to drag the layers palette out as you said and it is expanded to normal size. I will need to use it tomorrow under normal circumstances to see if it stays open. It surprises me that the palette would disappear whether or not it was grouped with other palettes. This should not be, and has never been the behavior in older versions of Illustrator or even Photoshop new versions do not behave like this.
Mystery.
Thank You,
Ken

  • Smart Objects not too Smart

Created a graphic in Ai CS6, dropped into Ps CS6 as a Smart Object, but when I want to edit the Smart Object from Ps CS6 it wants to open it in Ai CS5. What is happening to the smartness of the Smart Object? Any help is appreciated. Thx

Thanks for the help ^ emil emil. I uninstalled CS5, and received a message saying the was no no program associated with the file. Looked at my preferences in Ai, nothing to changed. So it dawned on me that you were talking about the program preferences in Windows 7. Ah Ha!!! No program associated with the .ai files. Re-associated them with Ai CS6 and everything works great, including the Smart Obects. Wondering about other file associations with Dw, Fl, Id, Fw that I will run into. Thanks again.

  • Adaware scan that is taking a little too long for comfort

I have a hidden file ri0nda.default in my documents and settings, that I think is from an addon I downloaded for firefox. I'm currently running an adaware scan on it, it's at 448000 objects scanned and I have a bad feeling that it might be a virus or something along those lines... Am I being paranoid or is this something I should immediately remove from my computer?

I haven't checked if the regexp classes are checking interrupts flags, but you can always try to call interrupt on the thread which is working.
That's the only thing which I can think of (except for invoking stop on the thread, and that's deprecated)

  • Tried updating to firefox 5 but my computer is, little too old for it. is there a place i can get firefox 4 again?

before it told me i wouldn't be able to use 5, it deleted 4

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • Photoshop display a little too wide

I haven't been able to figure out a solution to this annoying problem.
I'm running Windows Vista on an HP with a 24" LCD monitor, an NVidea 8800# series video card and when I bring up Photoshop the display is a little too wide for the screen. Not a lot too wide, just a little too wide so that the left hand side of the display is cut off...just a little. It's not inoperable as I can guess at what is there from what is already showing on my screen but it would be much better if this wasn't happening. I don't know if I should be addressing this in an Adobe forum or somewhere else but it isn't happening with my other applications (i.e. Word, internet site screens etc).
If anybody could give me a clue, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    j.

Are you running the monitor at its native resolution? If not, you
should. Most 24" widescreens are 1920x1200.

  • Which Mac should I upgrade to if I am a Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign user, with a little iMovie thrown in?

I've been using a 24" iMac (originally purchased in mid-2006) to do graphic design with Adobe Creative Cloud, primarily Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator. I am also starting to do some very ametuer video prep (like iMovie) etc. With just Photoshop and Indesign alone, what is the minimum Mac I should upgrade to, if I am still concerned about performance, but budget and mobility could come into play too? For instance would the 13.3" Mac Book Pro with Intel Graphics be sufficient for doing my usual print design, with a little iMovie thrown in? At that price, I could afford a big display to plug into when I am at my office desk.
I like the idea of mobility (which I haven't had before with the big iMac), but don't want to notice a horrible lag in performance if I get a weaker machine. The guy at PeachMac said that when it came to display the Retina (in the Macbook Pro, 13.3 in edition) made a high difference despite the lack of a dedicated graphics processor. I don't do heavy-duty, memory-intensive graphics work but about once every two years anyway, and my iMac only has 2GB of RAM to begin with. I just want to make sure that true designers who have switched from older iMac machines to Macbook Pro's (not the most expensive models) didn't regret it when trying to run Photoshop, et al.
(My absolute budget is "no more than $2,000" which is why I am considering the new iMac vs. the MacBook Pro 13.3" and getting a nice external display.)
    Thanks!

To run the new Studio you need Leopard and it will not spec'd to run on Tiger (Leopard 10.5.6 [specs here|http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs>) I have run it in Leopard and Snow Leopard, and both seem fairly similar, though I generally like my Leopard machines a bit more. Still breaking in the Snow Leopard and getting various kinks out of it. It seems I have some more little things go wrong in Snow Leopard.
Overall I like the upgrades in the Studio and you may just want to make another boot drive with clean Snow Leopard and the new Studio to work with until you feel you are happy with how it is performing. Bascially that is what I do until I am fully comfortable with the system and always have my rollback plan in place in case something goes awry and I need to get things done....

  • Photoshop bug: Smart Objects overwriting other Smart Objects when edited and saved in Illustrator

Experiencing issues when working with a large number (over 200) vector smart objects brought into Photoshop CS4 from Illustrator.
Things seemed to be going along nicely; if I needed to edit a Smart Object, I could double-click it, it would open in Illustrator and then I could edit and save it.  Return to Photoshop and the Smart Object is updated.  Swell and dandy.  The issue started happen when I hit a large quantity of either vector smart objects (remember, over 200) or the many layers and groups within Photoshop (must be over 500).  When I would double-click, open, edit, and save the vector Smart Object, the Photoshop Smart Object I was working on would update AND another/several other Smart Objects would update as well.  Which, of course, would ruin the artwork, as suddenly I was seeing several instances of the same object.  If it hadn't have been for ForeverSave, I many not have recovered the work.
It's rather hard to isolate the issue to see what's causing the problem.  Here are some of the possible causes:
    Running Snow Leopard on Mac
Many, many Smart Objects in file, perhaps enough to ruin the naming convention and cause bugs when Photoshop referenced the temp file
Many, many Photoshop layers and groups
Illustrator vector files copy+pasted from several different files (affects the naming convention perhaps?)
Some groups/layers in Photoshop are duplicates
To help make it a little clearer, you should know:
Running the most updated software / OS (that is until CS5 comes out)
Smart Objects showed no error until I had actually opened, edited, and saved the referenced temp file (i.e. VectorSmartObject1.ai)
Files saved and worked on from Dropbox (network folder)
Not looking for much of an answer to this question; I just wanted to see if anyone else had come across this bug.  Also, Adobe PLEASE look into this as you begin testing for the next update.  I have the file(s) if you need to replicate the issue.  My best guess is that the naming convention of Vector Smart Objects has an odd character limit so when Vector Smart Object 200.ai is saved, Vector Smart Object 2.ai gets overwritten.

Have you tested this with Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5? (the current versions, that came out last month)
If you duplicated a smart object layer, both layers refer back to the same file content. So when you change the file, both layers would be updated.  That is intentional and explained in your manual.  If you didn't realize this, that could explain what you are seeing.
If you placed separate files, then they should not be updated at the same time, because they will refer to separate files.
Yes, Smart Objects only update when you save the file.
You would need over 4 billion smart objects in one document to get Photoshop confused about which one refers to which file.  And since the layer limit is much less than 4 billion, I doubt that is the cause.
There is no naming convention involved. We don't limit the filenames (except to platform standards and to include a file type extension).

  • Fsck.ext3 a little too fast, what's best way make sure nothing lost?

Short of reinstalling, what are the easiest measures I can take to make sure what I can guarentee is not corrupted is not corrupted? I am going to resync pacman and reinstall everything on my system, but is there anything else I can do? I went through that fsck.ext3 a LITTLE too fast (the system refused to boot until I did it) and now fear something important might have been written. There *are* two files in lostandfound, though I'm not quite sure what to do with them. I guess I'm just a little concerned. All *seems* to be well but...... yeah.
I think I found at least one thing that is corrupt... cd! When you put cd <path that doesn't exist> it spits out weird symbols instead of the usual error message:
    megini / $ cd De
    bash: cd: De: Τ褦ʥեǥ쥯ȥϤޤ
Is that a part of coreutils?
    Last edited by violagirl23 (2008-06-18 07:14:12)

fsck doesn't normally do a full check on ext3 unless the filesystem is due a check either according to the time since the last check or the mount count, however you can force a check by using the -f option.
I would only bother reinstalling packages if I had a good reason to think their files were corrupted, e.g. weird errors like the one with the cd command, complaints about missing file or files from a package turning up in lost+found.  All packages will reinstalled sooner or later anyway when the packages get updated.
That file from lost+found looks like the pacman depends files for xine-ui, so you could just move it back to /var/lib/pacman/local/xine-ui-<version>/depends where <version> is the version you have installed on your system.
Oh, and "which cd" doesn't return a result for a file, so I think carlocci is right about it being a bash built-in.

  • Want to download cross platform, apple too smart

this isn't a quicktime question, per se, because i haven't been able to download quicktime. my home computer is on a dial-up connection, so i download stuff at work on the T-1 to bring home. my work computer is a PC. unfortunately, the apple site is too clever for me and only offers me the windows version of quicktime (and safari). is there any way, as in the iTunes download, to switch this so that i can download mac software? iTunes at home won't work until i get this quicktime and it's driving me mad.

    Do these work?

  • OS Lion Slow, is it too much for my MBP?

    hi everyone-
I have a 2007 model MBP, 2.33 GHz Intel core 2 duo. I upgraded everything I could within the last year with a 500 gb internal hard drive and 4GB 667 MHz memory installed. Out of that 500GB hard drive, almost 290GB are available.
I upgraded to Lion and everything seemed to run well at first and was impressed with the speed. However recently everything has slowed down. I searched the forums and found tips on disk repair and repairing permissions, which ended up making the OS unable to boot at the startup screen. Thank god for time machine. Long story short, I pulled out my old Snow Leopard disk and reinstalled (yes I also tried the lion recovery, which didn't help), and then went and reinstalled lion from the app store. 1 weekend later and now Monday, I'm back to having everything running. However today I am noticing that the apps are lagging once again, and I'm constantly getting the beach ball and little gestures are taking forever to load.  Could Lion be too much for my MBP, which up until recently flew?
Any and all suggestions will be helpful. I use my MBP everyday for my workload, so getting this to perform again and keep up with my demand is extremely important.
    Thanks!

Check the SMART status in Disk Utility. Other than that, not that I know of. Perhaps more advanced disk utilities like Disk Warrior, but I don't know.
You would hear the disk making a lot of noise if it were having issues accessing a bad sector.
I had a drive that started causing slow-downs and beach balls for a while. Erased drive and reinstalled. Same thing. The SMART status in Disk Utility showed Verified up until the drive died completely.

  • Smart playlists;  no longer smart in version 3  how to tell Apple?

Since iphone and ipod version 3 & itunes 9 smart playlists will not sync onto ipod. Several posts relate to this. Apple has posted a complex set of solutions, including to disable live updating. The later works but eliminates the value and purpose of smart playlists as a means to manage subscriptions and updates.
The final solution is to create a second smart playlist with the rule "playlist is (name of first playlist)". That works but is far too complicated for the average user, and has made my playlist panel into double the size with half the convenience.
If anyone knows how to contact Apple with a request for an acknowledgment that they need to fix this problem I would appreciate it. Two updates later, no fix, not even a promise to try to fix.

    Anna:
Yes, I am fully updated. The last update did not resolve the smart playlist jumbling.
The solutions mentioned in my post were in fact published by Apple at this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3044
That would be fine but it tends to suggest that the user is doing something wrong that has to be "changed" when in fact the problem arose with the latest software versions, and the user workaround is clumsy and unsatisfactory.
I will try using the feedback form

I just bought a new PC and I have re-installed my Adobe Creative Suite Standard on it.
Software open fine. PROBLEM: The toolbars (menu stuff) appear extra-small, too small for me to read...
I went into the PC settings and tried to change the display resolution. This changes the size of all  the icons (not only Adobe) but it does not solve the problem when I open an Adobe application (Photoshop or Illustrator)... The PC is run under Windows 8.1 and my display resolution is 3200x1800 (but again, when I change the settings for a smaller resolution, only the size of the icons is affected. Once I open the software, the problem is still there, extra-small toolbars...). Help!!!

Anything before CC is not high-DPI compatible. Feel free to continue to experiment with your system settings.

  • Buffer too small for string - Crystal Report for Vs2010

    Hello,
I have recently upgrade my VS2010 project to Crystal Report for Visual Studion 2010.
I have some reports that contains more than 512 characters in the Report Comments section.
When I try to do a RptDoc.SaveAs(vPath, false) the following error is raised:
Buffer too small for string or missing null byte.
          at CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc.ReportClientDocumentClass.SaveAs in :line 0
          at CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportClientDocumentWrapper.SaveAs in :line 0
          at CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument.SaveAs in :line 0
This line SaveAs was working has expected with Crystal Report 2008. Any idea on why it is not working anymore.
    Thank you.
    Charles

    Hello Don,
I have start a little project to retest the behavior.
I have create a new report in Crystal Report 2008 just by clicking New, Finish and Save.
In a new Windows Application in Vs2010 ,I have added the following Crystal Report Reference.
        CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, Version=13.0.2000.0
       CrystalDecisions.Shared, Version=13.0.2000.0
I have then try the following code and found out the limit of ReportComment is 511 but in the Crystal Report 2008 designer and runtime the limit did not apply.
    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
          Dim objRpt As New CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument()
          Dim i As Integer = 0
          Try
             objRpt.Load("c:\temp\empty.rpt", CrystalDecisions.Shared.OpenReportMethod.OpenReportByTempCopy)
             Do
                i += 1
                objRpt.SummaryInfo.ReportComments = New String("X", i)
             Loop
             objRpt.SaveAs("c:\temp\dfh_save.rpt", False)
          Catch ex As Exception
             MsgBox("i: " & i)
             MsgBox(ex.Message)
          End Try
    End Sub
I am able to put has many characters if I insert the report in the Vs2010 Solution.
If you prefer I can send you my little project.
    Thank you.

  • Time Machine Error - The backup is too large for the backup disk

I have been using Lion (currently 10.7.1) on my MacBook Pro (13" - early 2011) since it was released.  I haven't had any serious problems with it.
All of a sudden, I am getting an error in Time Machine.  When it tries to run a backup, the error "This backup is too large for the backup disk.  The backup requires 7.51 GB but only 630.1 GB are available."  What gives?  That's plenty of room.  I have installed Logic Studio and a few plug-ins, so the 7.51 GB is probably right.  The free space is correct as well.  I can't understand what the problem is.
The backup disk is an external USB 2.0 drive with no other Time Machine backups on it or any other files.  The folder "Backups.backupdb" is the only thing on the root of the disk.
I am reluctant to reset the Time Machine and lose all of the backups, but I will if anyone recommends it.

    Hi Linc,
It is not working at the moment, as I have restored the original Lion image again; it has all my work and apps on it.
Many thanks for the info on the log, though.  It tells a strange story.  Here's the log from the last backup that worked to the first one that failed: --

I don't understand.  For starters, I think it's a little wasteful that 3.5 GB has been used to back up 601 KB.  That's the difference in free space on the backup volume between the two backups.  That can't be normal, surely.
The only error is that mds[32] error, and from what I've read on forums, that seems to appear on backups that work perfectly.
Too weird.  It looks like I'll have to reinstall Lion and all my applications again to get Time Machine working, or find another backup solution.

  • Itunes not opening error message too cryptic for me

Just got itunes installed on my laptop. Did it all correctly (admin rights, etc.). It ran fine yesterday, now today I try to open it and get a message: Instruction at "0x00008200" referenced memory at 0x00008200. The memeory could not be "read"
OK, I admit I'm not a wiz at computers, but this is too cryptic for me, any help out there???

    Might fix your problem:
Through Finder navigate to your users directory
    Select the folder "Music"
    Press CMD-i
An info windows will pop up
Scroll down to the very bottom
If necessary expand "Sharing & Permissions"
Is your username listed with Privilege "Read & Write"?
Tick the little lock at bottom right - enter your PW
    If necessary correct your privileges
In any case press the little gearwheel - "Apply to enclosed items ..."
    ok
    reboot
