Illustrator CS on Vista 64

I know Illustrator CS is not officially supposed to run on Vista 64. I read reports that it does run, but sometimes gives error messages. I thought I'd come here to the experts so to speak and get their feedback. Are there major problems running Illustrator CS on Vista 64?

Ooops, so sorry.  I just tried to install the upgrade without first installing v8.0... worked fine.  It simply asked me to install the v8.0 disc to verify (no need to actually install).
Please excuse my ignorance.

  • I can't open illustrator 10 on Vista

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble opening illustrator 10 on vista. Everytime I try to open it, I  get a pop up window about the color scheme not being
Compatiable .I was wondering can anyone help me out?

The color scheme warning is not related to AI itself. It's a system warning. To turn it off, find the Illustrator.exe (should be C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 10), right-click, choose Properties and modify the Compatibility options.

  • Error in Illustrator CS4 on Vista 64:  "Can't finish previewing.  There isn't enough memory. ID = - 108

Please help:  I have searched for this error and would appreciate any help or feedback.  I am not the Illustrator expert.  I build fast PC's, not design on them.  I would especially like to know where a complete error code list resides.
    Freshly assembled:
    Intel Core i7
    2 x 3GB DDR3
    3 SSD HDD's
    9800GTX+
I've done all the tips and tricks I can find.  With paging file, and w/o.  Scratch disk and w/o.  Fresh reboot on PC, CS4 fully updated, Vista 64bit business fully updated.  Aero off along with all visual stuff.
This PC is built to perform but will error out and I can't find the cause.
    To create the error:
    1.  open new 'print document'
    2.  Create text:  I use Blackoak Std 72 pt.  Pick a word to type.  I use 'Hello'.
    3.  Select and choose Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel.  Set Extrude Depth to 500, Bevel: Complex 4, and Height to 40.
    4.  Object > Expand Appearance
    5.  Object > Path > Offset Path. Run 3 times one of each type (Miter, Round, Bevel).  At this point there should be a lot of paths.
    6.  Window > Pathfinder > Unite
Total RAM usage never exceeds 3GB on the machine.
    Thanks for the help.

    Hello RippinPC,

But do not worry, Adobe will sell you the CS5 (coming this April I think) instead of providing an update.

  • Illustrator 10 and Vista

I have had Illustrator 10 installed on my PC with Vista for about a year now with no problems, but now all of a sudden it won't work! I can't really afford CS3 (the only version "officially" supported by Vista) and I need Illustrator for both work and personal. Anyone else run into the same thing and have any advice??
    Thanks in advance!!!

I am using Vista 64 bit and attempting to open Illustrator 9.0.  I also experienced the same problem where Illustrator would attempt to open, but then I would receive a message saying that it stopped working.  My solution was to follow the instructions provided by Harron to right click on the Illustrator executable file and go to Properties and then select certain settings on the Compatibility tab (Disable Visual Themes, Disable Desktop Composition, and Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings)....
BUT I had to make one more change in order to get the program to open properly:  Check the box where it says Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2).  Voila!  It worked.  I think this may also work for Illustrator 10.  At least you can give it a try if you still aren't able to open the older Illustrator application.  I tried everything and this was the only resolution that got it to finally work for me.

  • WinXP and Vista memory usage with Illustrator CS2 - is Vista winning?

    Dear forum.
I have an AI-template file where I insert some very large PNG files into it, modifies the template a bit and then I print the the resulting document in PS-format. The PNG files may be as large as 100 MB (24-bits, approx. 100 mil. pixels in total). It appears that while a Vista-based machine has no problem loading one or even two copies of these huge files into memory, a WinXP-based machine can't even load a single file into memory. Instead, I a dialog box with the message: "Could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand this file". Is it really a faulty plug-in or is it just CS2's way of saying "not enough memory" in a quirky way?
All in all, I would like to hear whether someone has the same experience with Vista, ie. it seems to be better at memory management or better at allocating memory for Illustrator CS2, enabling it to load large PNG files.
The specifications of the WinXP-based machine:
    Pentium 4 2.6 GHz
    3 GB RAM
Virtual memory 4095 MB in a physically separate drive from the OS disk
All Visual Effects are turned off
Has Illustrator CS2, Adobe Acrobat 7 and Distiller installed (and a few auxilliary programs)
The specifications of the Vista-based machine:
    Dell OptiPlex 740SF
    AMD x2 5000 (2.6 GHHz)
    2 GB RAM (667 MHz, 2 x 1 GB)
    250 GB SATA disk
    Windows Vista
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Standard + Adobe Creative Suite 3
    Thanks!

    Hi, everyone
I got a new t440p 20ANA00UHH (8GB RAM, win8 64bits) about one week ago. It works really well, but its memory usage  confused me. In Task Manager, the "Performance" option shows memory is 68% (5.4G in use), but "Users" option shows memory usage 66% (1019.5M in use). Is that normal ? I just opened some websites and word files.

  • Illustrator 8 on Vista-64 so I can install upgrade to CS2

I have already installed Photoshop PS2 on this Vista-64 system - no problem, have been using it for months.  I seldom use Illustrator but now need to install so I can work with customer file.  Won't install, installer exe doesn't even load.  Note: Other thread focussed on suggestions that v8.0 is so old it's time to pay for upgrade.  Well, I have the upgrade to CS2, but step-1 is install v8.0, then install upgrade.  This worked fine for Photoshop, but not for Illustrator.  Any suugestions?

Ooops, so sorry.  I just tried to install the upgrade without first installing v8.0... worked fine.  It simply asked me to install the v8.0 disc to verify (no need to actually install).
    Please excuse my ignorance.

  • Viewing thumbnails of Illustrator files in Vista Explorer

At work I run Adobe Illustrator CS on Windows XP pro. When I set Windows
Explorer to Thumbnail view I get a thumbnail view of illustrator files.
On my laptop I am running Illustrator CS3 on Windows Vista. I can't figure
out how to get thumbnail views of illustrator files in Windows Explorer on
this system. Is there a way?
    Thanks,
    Richard

As I recall, AI 11 (CS) was the last version to provide thumbnail views in Explorer. A nasty conflict with Explorer, however, made it necessary for Adobe to remove the feature.
If you find yourself facing oddball problems in AI 11, such as difficulty saving or deleting files, you would be told by tech support to delete or rename the file aiicon.dll. Unfortunately, that also nukes thumbnail views in Explorer.
The recommended procedure for previewing AI files is to use Adobe Bridge instead of Explorer.

  • How to Preview Illustrator file in Vista Explorer?

With almost all software installed on Vista, I can use Explorer's 'Organize', 'Layout', 'Preview Pane' to see a giant preview of my files. However, the Adobe files only show generic icons. How can I see a preview of my Adobe files in the Preview pane? I'm using CS3.

    Hello Wynn,
Is a 100% Adobe's failure. The bug started with CS3 and is alive and well with version CS4 too. In this Windows forum, we have blamed Microsoft, but some Mac users think Apples is the problem:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b81128/4
The reality is that Adobe cannot keep up with new technology, or they just do not care. As suggested previously, you need a plug-in or a second program just to preview a document. Now that is comedy!

  • Is Adobe Illustrator 10 Compatiable w/Vista?

    Thank you!

    Kimberly,
I just had a look in my archive, and found the answer in an old thread from 23rd June 2008:
    It should work.
Its working is implied both in the OP by Lara and in the first post answer by Harron.
    OP: Illustrator 10 and Vista

    First post:
This is the "standard" advice for running older (v.12 and prior) versions of Illustrator on Windows Vista:
Right-click on the Illustrator.exe file, choose properties, click the compatibility tab, and then select...
    Disable Visual Themes
    Disable Desktop Composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI machines
If you already have these settings selected, I don't know what else you might try other than a good old-fashioned prefs trashing (see FAQ #2).

  • Illustrator 10 on WinVista O/S

Illustrator 10 appreared to install successfully, yet only the Adobe splash screen appeared for a second at start up. Then nothing. I have tried the repair route, but no change in the results.

A reported solution to running older (v12 and prior) versions of Illustrator on Windows Vista:
Right-click on the Illustrator EXE file, choose properties, click the compatibility tab, and then select...
    Disable Visual Themes
    Disable Desktop Composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI machines

  • Can I get product key for older versions of Illustrator with Creative Cloud Student and Teacher edition

I have purchased the Creative Cloud Student and Teacher edition and I now need to install illustrator on Windows Vista. All the new versions are not available for Vista. I have managed to find older versions for download but it is asking me for a product key. Is it possible to get the product keys for older version with Creative Cloud Student and Teacher edition?

You cannot purchase older versions of Adobe software thru Adobe.  If you have a full subscription you can acquire the CS6 version  thru that.  I have had CS6 running on a Vista system for years without problems.

  • Illustrator CS3 - curser with a life of its own!

I have a curser problem will all the tools in illustrator under windows vista. When I try to select a point, scale, or draw any object the actual active area of the curser moves! For example if I draw a box the start point is in the middle of the pen tool. If I try to select a point with the arrow tool it will not let me and I have to click on a random area around the actual point untill it is selected. The most annoying is when scaling an object, when I try to click and drag a handle the curser moves to the side, away from the handle all by itself! I have been using illustrator for almost 10 years and I have never seen anything like this, please help!!!
    Regards Dave

    David,
You didn't mention whether your mouse was wireless/wired, optical/ball/other ...
Mice are interrupt driven. Check to see if you have any IRQ conflicts in the Control Panel-> System-> Hardware-> Device Manager. Also check the IRQs in Start-> Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> System Information. Are any devices sharing interrupts with your mouse? Also the more you tax your system resources, the more likely you are to have issues with interrupt-driven devices.
If you have a ball mouse is it clean inside? Twist open the bottom panel and clean out the gunk. I clean the roller ball with alcohol and a Q-tip on a regular basis and use a pen knife to scrape gunk off the x and y rollers, and blast it out with a little dust off. (while everything is unplugged of course).
If you have an optical mouse, what kind of surface are you working on? Optical mice don't like very smooth, very coarse or reflective surfaces. I've tried a variety of surfaces and the cardboard backing from a pad of paper is the best lo-tech solution for me. I've actually placed my laptop's optical mouse on a glass table and the cursor went shooting off the screen.
Assuming you have any of the following items, have you tried: changing the wireless channel on your router; temporarily turning off wireless; temporarily pulling the batteries on your wireless keyboard; switching channels on your wireless keyboard or mouse (see the hardware manual); moving your wireless dongle to a USB port on the front of your PC; changing the batteries in your wireless mouse?
If your PC is hidden away under the desk or in a cabinet, the signal strength may be low causing the pointer to behave erratically. Reflective glass surfaces (windows) behind your computer may also interfere with the signal.
    Hope some of this helps.

  • Illustrator CS3 shuts down whenever I open a previously saved document

this is strange, but if I am working on something in Illustrator CS3 using Vista, and I try and double click a document I was working on previously to open in illustrator, it completely closes out the program unless I go to file - open, is there apatch out there for this? I am using a new laptop with Vista -

    Hi Thom,
If you prefer Word (not Pages) to open all TextEdit documents, do this.
In Finder, click once on a TextEdit document and go to Menu > File > Get Info (command i). In the Info window, look for Open With. You may have to click on the right-pointing triangle to reveal the options. From the Pop-up menu, choose Word. If you do not see Word in the list, choose Other. That will take you to your Applications Folder where you can choose the application to open that text document.
Back in the Info window, click on Change All... That will set that app as the preferred app for all textEdit documents. Please reply if you have trouble.
    Regards,
    Ian
