Illustrator CS2 Memory Allocation Issue

I have a client who uses illustrator cs2 and whenever anyone uses illustrator to open enough files to cause illustrator.exe to consume 750mb of ram "through task manager" it says "An unknown error has occured"
Now i have tested this on around 6 different computers all with varying specs everyone with at least 2gb of ram and all core2duo or better and the problem is consistant across the board, i have searched through almost every google search possible relating to this issue with no avail, the issue does not persist in photoshop cs2 and you cannot directly allocate more ram to illustrator, i have also made changes to the page file making it up to 3 times as big as max memory. It seems to be some limitation of the memory that can be used by illustrator. Could anyone who has experienced such a problem or has illustrator and can try opening enough files to reach a peak of around 750mb mem use see if they experience the same issue.
The file sizes they are opening are only around 5mb but once opened consume around 300mb of mem. At this stage they dont want to upgrade to cs4 until there is some proof that this is indeed a limitation of cs2.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Ok, Just because i have spent so much time researching this and it seems to be a recurring reported issue with abode users. I will attempt to summarise my findings and the resolution we used.
Firstly i would like to say that adobe has the worst call centre i have ever encountered with a 4 hour hold to speak to a SALES person before hanging up this occured between 12pm and 4pm aest on thursday 27/08/2009, I would never recommend calling adobe if your time is worth anything to you, because it is certainly worth nothing to adobe. *breath* I guess that can do this because they are the only feasable graphic solution available in their market segment, seems like microsoft of the graphic design world. Anyway, enough rant.
What i found was that adobe did not support working over a network share and went about fixing this issue a number of years ago, their solution which is more of a work around was to create version cue, So anyone who encounters constantly corrupt files while operating over a network must deploy and use version cue, the current supported version cs4 has numerous issues specifically with the check in and checkout procedure, the only way you can prevent data lose in the event of a windows crash (obviously a common occurance) is to checkin in your data regularly as saving will only keep a copy if adobe drive remains open, this results in numerous versions and kinda makes saving redundant as saving is only temporarily keeps your work for the session.
CS4 is much more stable and i have not encountered any issues with limitations of the ammount of virtual memory assigned i have had around 30 open at one time and no issues, overall a much better and more stable product that cs2, too bad they couldnt implement a better version control system, i am also very iffy about moving this data to another server.
Thanks to all who contributed and the assistance recieved by this community, way more helpful than adobe technical support.

  • Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues

    Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
    The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
    Cheers
    Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

  • Sun Studio 12 - Memory allocation issue

I am porting an old code from Solaris to Linux (RHEL). The code allocates a large memory block using the malloc() command, but the command fails on Linux when the size exceeds 128 Mb (I have 4Gb of RAM).
I have tried increasing the heap size in the netbeans conf file with no luck.
    Any ideas?

Can you try running the app from a terminal and see if it works (for a cleaner experiment, don't close Sun Studio since it might consume a considerable amount of memory for a larger project)?
As to ulimit, it actually makes sense to check it, but what you really need to check is ulimit of the process started by Sun Studio, because there's a small chance that it actually changes something before forking. You can try to check that by temporarily changing "build output" of your project to
    /bin/bash -c "ulimit -c"and running it.

  • Video Card Memory Allocation Issue with SW:TOR

I am attempting to run SW:TOR on a duel-boot iMac running both iOS X Lion (10.7.2) and Windows 7 via Boot Camp.  I have the game installed on the Windows 7 side, but because it is an iMac, my video card (ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB) is integrated.
The error I receive is of course general and non descriptive beyond "your computer does not meet the system requirements for the game" but all performance tests I have ran blow away all the minimum recommended requirements.
It looks like it is narrowed down to VRAM and the application is not seeing all of the 512 MB.
I've already updated all drivers, trying various combinations between Mac, MS, an Component OEM recommendations.
Any suggestions on what I can look at / check?
Or, since I am in the Windows 7 side, would this question be more approptiatly placed on some Microsoft forum?

Quick time istalled on the Windows side?  That got me up and running.
    Good luck.

  • WinXP and Vista memory usage with Illustrator CS2 - is Vista winning?

    Dear forum.
I have an AI-template file where I insert some very large PNG files into it, modifies the template a bit and then I print the the resulting document in PS-format. The PNG files may be as large as 100 MB (24-bits, approx. 100 mil. pixels in total). It appears that while a Vista-based machine has no problem loading one or even two copies of these huge files into memory, a WinXP-based machine can't even load a single file into memory. Instead, I a dialog box with the message: "Could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand this file". Is it really a faulty plug-in or is it just CS2's way of saying "not enough memory" in a quirky way?
All in all, I would like to hear whether someone has the same experience with Vista, ie. it seems to be better at memory management or better at allocating memory for Illustrator CS2, enabling it to load large PNG files.
The specifications of the WinXP-based machine:
    Pentium 4 2.6 GHz
    3 GB RAM
Virtual memory 4095 MB in a physically separate drive from the OS disk
All Visual Effects are turned off
Has Illustrator CS2, Adobe Acrobat 7 and Distiller installed (and a few auxilliary programs)
The specifications of the Vista-based machine:
    Dell OptiPlex 740SF
    AMD x2 5000 (2.6 GHHz)
    2 GB RAM (667 MHz, 2 x 1 GB)
    250 GB SATA disk
    Windows Vista
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Standard + Adobe Creative Suite 3
    Thanks!

    Hi, everyone
I got a new t440p 20ANA00UHH (8GB RAM, win8 64bits) about one week ago. It works really well, but its memory usage  confused me. In Task Manager, the "Performance" option shows memory is 68% (5.4G in use), but "Users" option shows memory usage 66% (1019.5M in use). Is that normal ? I just opened some websites and word files.

  • Illustrator CS2 Save Issues - Random Hexadecimal Naming

    Hello folks,
I have a weird one for you. I have a user running Illustrator CS2 on a Windows XP SP3 system and has recently developed strange issues when saving changes to existing AI documents of which he is the creator and owner.
When the user makes a change to the existing file that he has opened, if he goes to file and save, it creates a file with 7 hexadecimal characters followed by a tilde. If the document is then closed, the old file name is lost and the file only exists as the new Hex named file. If he makes another change, without closing the file, and hits Save again, it retains the original file name.
I have yet to uninstall and reinstall, because I wanted to see if there is a setting that has been thrown out of whack.
    Please advise.
    Thank You,
    Jesse W.

If you have not yet updated to 12.0.1, do so.
Are you saving to a network-accessed file server, and, if so, were any changes made to the system recently? In any event, it's best not to work directly on files across a network.
Finally, always try trashing prefs before resorting to an all-out uninstall/reinstall. (See FAQ #2.)

  • Illustrator CS2 issues on intel

After installing Creative Suite 2 I cannot get Illustrator CS2 to run on my iMac.
It goes through the motions with the splash screen etc, but it is not creating any of the palettes or a new document window - it just hangs there awaiting a friendly force quit.
I've tried repairing permissions, holding down option whilst starting the app etc, but still no joy. Any tips?

I suggest only running cs2 in xp with bootcamp.
It is more stable and 100 times faster.
What gets me is that for years apple was known as a designers machine. Now without a UB of cs2 they don't run the most important design apps well at all in osx.
I really hope adobe gives in and decides to release a patch of cs2 for mac users. But according to them, that won't happen.
What kills me is that many of my favorite design apps are from macromedia.
And apps like freehand will never see a mac UB because they were snapped up by adobe. So I have to run FH in xp to use it at speed. Guess I am going to have to learn those xp "command keys". Wish mr. jobs would use some of that disney money and just buy adobe.

  • Can't get Illustrator CS2 for Mac to start up/open

    Hello Everyone,
My Illustrator Cs2 for Mac was working great, but now it won't open start-up.
It begins to open when the window for the software startup opens, it begins to initialize, it begins to load fonts, but then it gets 'hung up' when it says "12.0.1 Initializing...Created by the Adobe Illustrator Team". In my dock it says that the "application is not responding" and it never resolves to completely load the software.
I enclose a screenshot to show you what I'm on about.
I have Mac OS X.4.11, a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, IGB of memory and 15 GB of hard disk space. Every other software on the laptop works well and I have no other problems.
Is anyone familiar with this or does anyone know what I should do?
    Thanks
    martin

Have you updated to Acrobat 8.2?
    Try this: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468.html
I was having the same issues and this fixed it.

  • Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 not starting - here is how it was solved.

This document is merely a compilation of information found at the sources named at the bottom of this document.
Basically running older Adobe CS2 Software on a MacBook Pro 10.6.x Snow Leopard - probably like many of you that either can't afford the upgrade to CS3, CS4 or CS5, or maybe don't see the need to do so.  It's running good but it is slow since it is using Rosetta, but it does work - well, used to work.
Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, etc. were all running fine after the upgrade to Snow Leopard (under 10.6, 10.6.1 and 10.6.2).  Then the update to 10.6.3 was installed.  At the same time a bunch of other updates - including the Acrobat 8.2 update - were installed.  Not really sure what did it, but all of a sudden Illustrator CS2 stopped responding at the start up screen - no longer started up and InDesign CS2 popped the registration/licensing screen.  When trying to enter license info on first key press the application quit entirely.
So maybe the 10.6.3 update was the culprit.  Never even thought that it could be the Acrobat 8.2/8.2.1 updates.  Then I found this thread here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/613287?tstart=0 (good reading)
Which ultimately pointed me the the instructions here:
    >start quote from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468.html
Replace the corresponding files present in the “ /Library/Application Support/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/” folder with the one attached to this document.
Download the attached Mac.dmg (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468/attachments/Mac.dmg) file to a machine where the issue is seen.
    Close all Adobe applications
Double Click the Mac.dmg file to mount it.
Copy Mac folder from mounted image. Paste it to /Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/.
A message appears to confirm to replace the existing 'Mac' folder. Replace the 'Mac' folder.
Launch Illustrator or InDesign CS or CS 2.
The Mac folder attached to this KB document already has the correct permissions set, so it should not be necessary to complete the steps below. However there may be cases where the permissions for the Mac folder get overwritten. In such a case, the original issue can reoccur. To solve this issue, complete the steps below:
Follow Solution 1 and make sure that all Adobe applications are closed.
Right or Control click and select 'Get Info' on the Mac folder  in “ /Library/Application Support/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/”, which you have copied from the .dmg file attached to this document.
Verify that under 'Sharing and Permissions' all users listed have no write access
If a change is required, click the padlock symbol and provide your Administrator credentials
Select the user which has Write access and change it to 'Read Only'.
Ensure the user 'Everyone' is set to 'No Access.
To check if the issue has been solved, launch Acrobat 8.2 and then Illustrator or InDesign CS or CS 2.
    < end quote
Even after following the instructions still "no love" from Illustrator CS2 or InDesign CS2.  InDesign did no longer show the registration screen, but it didn't continue launching, and Illustrator progressed further along in the start up sequence but also never finished launching.
Then I found another article on the adobe site.  I am just quoting the part performed  and which ultimately did the trick.
    >start quote from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/326/326388.html
Steps 1 and 2 are not relevant so no need to do them
    3. At the Finder, choose File > Find.
    4. TypeAdobeFnt10.lst (Illustrator CS2), select the system drive, and then press Return.
    5. Delete all AdobeFnt10.lst files found.
    6. Restart the computer.
    7. Restart Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new Adobefnt10.lst or AdobeFnt07.lst file.
    < end quote
So, this solved the problems at least for the time being.  Hope this helps someone else a bit.

Illustrator CS2 stopped working for me on Snow Leopard as well. What it all boiled down to was not to update to 12.0.1. Not sure which release of Snow Leopard I was on when I figured that out but I keep up-to-date, am now at 10.6.6 and CS2 still works fine. I keep getting prompted to update to 12.0.1 from time to time but just cancel it.
I'm fairly sure I was at 12.0.1 already when I moved from Leopard to Snow Leopard and it was that, not a Snow Leopard update, that "broke" CS2 12.0.1. If I remember correctly, if you now try to apply the update, it won't go through with it anyway.

    Memory Fragmentation Problem or Bug
This situation means that a process has consumed a large amount of processor memory and then released most or all of it, leaving fragments of memory still allocated either by this process, or by other processes that allocated memory during the problem. If the same event occurs several times, the memory may fragment into very small blocks, to the point where all processes requiring a larger block of memory cannot get the amount of memory that they need. This may affect router operation to the extent that you cannot connect to the router and get a prompt if the memory is badly fragmented.
This problem is characterized by a low value in the "Largest" column (under 20,000 bytes) of the show memory command, but a sufficient value in the "Freed" column (1MB or more), or some other wide disparity between the two columns. This may happen when the router gets very low on memory, since there is no defragmentation routine in the IOS.
If you suspect memory fragmentation, shut down some interfaces. This may free the fragmented blocks. If this works, the memory is behaving normally, and all you have to do is add more memory. If shutting down interfaces doesn't help, it may be a bug. The best course of action is to contact your Cisco support representative with the information you have collected.

  • OSX 10.4.9 and Illustrator CS2

Has anyone heard of the 10.4.9 update creating similar problems with the pathfinder tools in Illustrator CS2 as 10.4.8 did? I'd like to update but only if it's safe. Last time I had to revert to 10.4.7 and don't want to go through that again!
    Grrr!

Personally. I have run the 10.4.9 updater and had no issues with Illustrator CS2 (12.0.1) pathfinder. I offer no guarantees, but everything is working fine for me.
In saying that, I also had no issues with 10.4.8 update!

  • Epson D78 and Adobe Illustrator CS2

    Hi ALL,
I never ever hat any problems to print from Adobe Illustrator CS2 with my Epson Stylus D78.
But, since I updated the my printer with the LATEST DRIVER 6.1 for Epson D78/79 I can't print from Adobe Illustrator CS2.
ALL other application are NO trouble at all to print from.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

Run repair permissions 2 times before an after the installation.
In Adobe CS2 Epson is printing again as before I was so stuppid to install the latest driver for Epson.

  • Thumbnails of Adobe  Illustrator CS2 have disappeared

I noticed that all of the Adobe Illustrator CS2 thumbnails have turned into just generic icons. This is pretty useless if you have files to browse through and you want to see the thumbnails in Spotlight or Finder. I can see thumbnails in Adobe Bridge, but I prefer using Spotlight.
Photoshop files have their icons, as do all .jpg .tiff and others. Also old AI files that I haven't opened in AI CS2 have their thumbnails as well. But as soon as I open them in AI CS2, the thumbnails are gone forever!!
How can I have the thumbnails back?
What is going on? Is this is another example of "Made for Mac" that is NOT?
Adobe people seem to think that it's an OSX issue, so please OSX wizards don't tell me now that it's an Adobe issue.
Thanks a lot for any help,
    Artur

No Illustrator I have ever used, and this goes back to Illustrator 88, has put anything but a generic program icon on any file.
If you have old Illustrator files with icons on them then most likely you were using a third party software to do it and they will be lost as soon as you save it.
This is not something Illustrator has ever done. Try using Thumbnail Pro:

Only $10 and works pretty well.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS2

I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard over two months ago & have found Leopard to be
trouble-free. I have used Photoshop & Illustrator CS2 frequently during this period without any hitches..... until about 4 days ago. Now I find that Illustrator will not open, it just runs to the end of the initialization process then just quits. Over and over. I have run repair permissions but still the same. I have re-installed Illustrator but still the same. I read in some other forum that this could be caused by the introduction of new fonts. I did a add few new fonts to the font-book a couple of weeks ago, but even with these disabled I still have the same problem. I sort of reject the font issue as all my other CS2 components (InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop) all open & function correctly with the entire font-book enabled.
Fortunately I have Tiger backed up on an external HD. If I run Illustrator in Tiger then everything works just fine, but it is a pain to switch to Tiger every time I want to use Illustrator.
Any ideas on this problem would be most welcome.

I have seen one other response tonight and we al seem to have the same problem. Here was the respose I gave to Matt, the other guy having problems.
I have just developed the same problem in just the last day or two. I believe it is the most recent update for Illustrator CS2. I have reinstalled once and did the update, only to have the same problem. My next step is to reinstall again but to not install the update. I have run for several weeks with no problem until I did the update. As with you all my other apps run fine except Illustrator. Let me know if you find out anything else. Tomorrow I reinstall again to see if that is a fix.
Also, if you press shift, ctrl, option, and apple key and then open Illustrator it clears the preferences and lets you open Illustrator to run just fine. The plug ins seem to be the problem in the update.

  • Illustrator CS2 stopped launching

My OS is 32 bit Windows Vista. My CPU is a Core 2 Duo. Adobe Illustrator CS2 used to work on my computer, but now it won't launch. It also won't reinstall or uninstall.
I went to the Windows Control Panel for uninstalling programs. When I highlighted the listing for Illustrator, the "remove program" button did not appear.
I tried to replace Illustrator CS2 with the academic version of Illustrator 10. When I entered the correct registration code for Illustrator 10, I got an error message that stated the registration code I entered was incorrect. I compared the registration code on the Illustrator 10 packaging with the registration code I entered more than 10 times. There can be no doubt that I entered the correct registration code. This registration code worked in 2001.

    benh,
This multiple issue seems rather strange. The ultimate cure might be to go back in time to a more stable condition of your computer if that is possible, or to argh reinstall everything including the OS.
To get CS2 to run again, you may try to Move the folder (follow the link with that name).
    Or you may try to:
    1) RightClick the shortcut;
    2) Click Properties;
    3) Click Compatibility;
    4) Tick Run this program in Compatibility mode for, then select XP in the dropdown list;
    5) Try to start.
