Illustrator CS2 quits at startup

I'm using Illustrator CS2 for Mac, v10.4.
I believe the problem may be with the fonts that need to be activated for Illustrator to open, b/c it quits as the program is starting up as it's cycling thru the fonts in the activation window. It stalls for a few seconds and quits after Apple Gothic comes up, but I don't think that font is a problem. It may be another font that I may have inadvertently deactivated in my font utility recently (but can't remember which would cause this).
I've reinstalled Illustrator, repaired permissions, and removed the .plist preference, but it still won't start.
Help would be greatly appreciated!
Thansk, johndziner

Fixed it myself after noticing a similar message thread on the forum.
I deleted the Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings folder and the com.illustrator.plist from the User/Library/Preferences folder. Put them on the desktop first then restarted Illustrator. Worked fine. Then trashed the old settings and .plist file---Illustrator will generate new ones at startup.

  • Illustrator CS2 Quits on Startup

When I go to launch Illustrator it gets just past the initialization and then quits. I have tried reinstalling but no luck.  Adobe no longer supports CS2...anyone have any ideas to try?
This just started happening about a week ago, when I started my computer it said my date/time were wrong, it was set to 1969, so I fixed the date/time but now Illustrator won't open...not sure if the incidents are related or not.

When your clock resets, it usually means that your motherboard battery is dead.  Not a big deal, $2-$10 fix.  How old is your computer?
As far as Illustrator goes, have you tried deleting your preferences?  It's possible something got confused when you went back in time there...
Mac: hold Shift + Command + Option + Control as you start up Illustrator.
Windows: hold Shift + Control + Alt

Well we are at 10.4.11 right now and 10.4.6 if I recall correctly was a nasty version. I'm running CS2 on 10.4.11 with no constant crashing. You always have the one off goofy crash every once in a while.

  • Help Center in CS2 quits on startup

I had to reinstall Illustrator CS2 (v12.1) today and found that after installing, my CS2 Help Center did not work. The window appears, then quits suddenly. I tried moving the Prefs and .plist for it to the desktop, but it did not help. It also does not work when launched from other CS2 apps.
Using Mac v10.4. Font utility is Font Explorer.

It has been so long that I can't remember now. I think help center in CS2 was replaced at some point. Reinstalling may have put the old one back. If it makes you feel any better Mine does not work either on my main machine.

My CS2 hasn't quit and is running fine on 10.6.7.
I don't know the reason for the crashing, but If it's worked so far, I would be looking for an explanation elsewhere than that I've been lucky until now. Suddenly becoming "unlucky" doesn't seem especially precise.
Andrewrob: Just a guess, but you might try running this command in Terminal (in Utilities) to rebuild the dyld shared cache. Copy/paste, don't type.
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
If you've never run sudo, you will get a warning, then be asked for your password, which you won't see on the screen as you type. Hit enter. Wait until the $ sign prompt returns, type "exit" and quit Terminal.
    Restart.

  • Illustrator CS2 quits when starting up

When starting up Illustrator it just quits on me.
    I already tried to
    - reinstall Illustrator CS
    - restarted my MacBook (Intel) 10.5.4
    - dragged the illustrator file onto the Illustrator icon
    Any ideas?

    Hello
I phone to the adobe helpdesk in Belgium Europe
They said it was a mistake in an update
and they give me a solution for my problem,
"Replace the corresponding files present in the “ /Library/
    Application Support/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/” folder with the
    one attached to this document.
Download the attached Mac.dmg file to a machine where the issue is seen.
Double Click the Mac.dmg file to mount it.
Copy Mac folder from mounted image. Paste it to /Library/
    ApplicationSupport/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/.
A message appears to confirm to replace the existing 'Mac' folder.
    Replace the 'Mac' folder.
Launch Illustrator or InDesign CS or CS 2."
I hope this is helpfull to you
    Greetings and thanks

  • I need help - My illustrator CS2 just quit working.  Can anyone help?

I went to open a file yesterday and illustrator just freezes on me.  won't open.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled but no luck.  My photo shop is working fine but Indesign now asks for serial number and then tells me it is not valid. Panic here as Adobe states they will not support/help me even if I pay.  They say illustrator CS2 is to old.  It does what I need for my business and must have it up and running again.  Short of buying the update - does anyone out there know of something I can try to resolve this?  HELP ME PLEASE????  Karen

You are a life saver!!!!  It worked!  Thank You  so much - Why couldn't
Adobe just sent this to me in the first place.  It would have made my life
soooooo much easier.  Back in business again - just in time to get a rush
order handled for one of our customers.   THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

  • G5 iMac Illustrator CS2 Unexpected quit

So I just bought a brand new 20''iMac G5 along with the Adobe Creative Suite 2...i came home today, installed the programs, and began designing. I was working for about 45min.-1hr when Illustrator "unexpectedly quit" on me. I re started to program and sure enough when I went back to work it quit again. Does this have to do with my computer over heating or what?

Take a look at this note from Adobe:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=333449
Not that it is any comfort, but an awful lot of people are having problems with Illustrator on their Intel Macs, running Illustrator in Rosetta. Pray for an early release of CS 3! Oh, and you don't have a G5, that was the processor used before the Intel processor.

  • Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 not starting - here is how it was solved.

This document is merely a compilation of information found at the sources named at the bottom of this document.
Basically running older Adobe CS2 Software on a MacBook Pro 10.6.x Snow Leopard - probably like many of you that either can't afford the upgrade to CS3, CS4 or CS5, or maybe don't see the need to do so.  It's running good but it is slow since it is using Rosetta, but it does work - well, used to work.
Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, etc. were all running fine after the upgrade to Snow Leopard (under 10.6, 10.6.1 and 10.6.2).  Then the update to 10.6.3 was installed.  At the same time a bunch of other updates - including the Acrobat 8.2 update - were installed.  Not really sure what did it, but all of a sudden Illustrator CS2 stopped responding at the start up screen - no longer started up and InDesign CS2 popped the registration/licensing screen.  When trying to enter license info on first key press the application quit entirely.
So maybe the 10.6.3 update was the culprit.  Never even thought that it could be the Acrobat 8.2/8.2.1 updates.  Then I found this thread here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/613287?tstart=0 (good reading)
Which ultimately pointed me the the instructions here:
    >start quote from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468.html
Replace the corresponding files present in the “ /Library/Application Support/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/” folder with the one attached to this document.
Download the attached Mac.dmg (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/534/cpsid_53468/attachments/Mac.dmg) file to a machine where the issue is seen.
    Close all Adobe applications
Double Click the Mac.dmg file to mount it.
Copy Mac folder from mounted image. Paste it to /Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/.
A message appears to confirm to replace the existing 'Mac' folder. Replace the 'Mac' folder.
Launch Illustrator or InDesign CS or CS 2.
The Mac folder attached to this KB document already has the correct permissions set, so it should not be necessary to complete the steps below. However there may be cases where the permissions for the Mac folder get overwritten. In such a case, the original issue can reoccur. To solve this issue, complete the steps below:
Follow Solution 1 and make sure that all Adobe applications are closed.
Right or Control click and select 'Get Info' on the Mac folder  in “ /Library/Application Support/Adobe/TypeSpt/Unicode/Mappings/”, which you have copied from the .dmg file attached to this document.
Verify that under 'Sharing and Permissions' all users listed have no write access
If a change is required, click the padlock symbol and provide your Administrator credentials
Select the user which has Write access and change it to 'Read Only'.
Ensure the user 'Everyone' is set to 'No Access.
To check if the issue has been solved, launch Acrobat 8.2 and then Illustrator or InDesign CS or CS 2.
    < end quote
Even after following the instructions still "no love" from Illustrator CS2 or InDesign CS2.  InDesign did no longer show the registration screen, but it didn't continue launching, and Illustrator progressed further along in the start up sequence but also never finished launching.
Then I found another article on the adobe site.  I am just quoting the part performed  and which ultimately did the trick.
    >start quote from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/326/326388.html
Steps 1 and 2 are not relevant so no need to do them
    3. At the Finder, choose File > Find.
    4. TypeAdobeFnt10.lst (Illustrator CS2), select the system drive, and then press Return.
    5. Delete all AdobeFnt10.lst files found.
    6. Restart the computer.
    7. Restart Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new Adobefnt10.lst or AdobeFnt07.lst file.
    < end quote
So, this solved the problems at least for the time being.  Hope this helps someone else a bit.

Illustrator CS2 stopped working for me on Snow Leopard as well. What it all boiled down to was not to update to 12.0.1. Not sure which release of Snow Leopard I was on when I figured that out but I keep up-to-date, am now at 10.6.6 and CS2 still works fine. I keep getting prompted to update to 12.0.1 from time to time but just cancel it.
I'm fairly sure I was at 12.0.1 already when I moved from Leopard to Snow Leopard and it was that, not a Snow Leopard update, that "broke" CS2 12.0.1. If I remember correctly, if you now try to apply the update, it won't go through with it anyway.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS2

I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard over two months ago & have found Leopard to be
trouble-free. I have used Photoshop & Illustrator CS2 frequently during this period without any hitches..... until about 4 days ago. Now I find that Illustrator will not open, it just runs to the end of the initialization process then just quits. Over and over. I have run repair permissions but still the same. I have re-installed Illustrator but still the same. I read in some other forum that this could be caused by the introduction of new fonts. I did a add few new fonts to the font-book a couple of weeks ago, but even with these disabled I still have the same problem. I sort of reject the font issue as all my other CS2 components (InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop) all open & function correctly with the entire font-book enabled.
Fortunately I have Tiger backed up on an external HD. If I run Illustrator in Tiger then everything works just fine, but it is a pain to switch to Tiger every time I want to use Illustrator.
Any ideas on this problem would be most welcome.

I have seen one other response tonight and we al seem to have the same problem. Here was the respose I gave to Matt, the other guy having problems.
I have just developed the same problem in just the last day or two. I believe it is the most recent update for Illustrator CS2. I have reinstalled once and did the update, only to have the same problem. My next step is to reinstall again but to not install the update. I have run for several weeks with no problem until I did the update. As with you all my other apps run fine except Illustrator. Let me know if you find out anything else. Tomorrow I reinstall again to see if that is a fix.
Also, if you press shift, ctrl, option, and apple key and then open Illustrator it clears the preferences and lets you open Illustrator to run just fine. The plug ins seem to be the problem in the update.

  • Illustrator CS2 Doesn't Start For User on Windows 2000

I've recently installed Adobe Illustrator CS2 on a Windows 2000 system. When I start the product when logged in as the Administrator, it starts fine. However, when I start the product logged in as a user, it goes thru the startup process, displays all of the various tool windows, and then before it gets to the first time window, it just closes. No error messages, nothing in the Windows system or application log, it just closes the same windows it just opened and then exits.
I've tried setting the permissions on the folders listed in the Windows Rights KB entry, with no effect. I've tried installing a postscript printer, setting full rights on it, and using it as the default for the user.
Does anyone know what file right, user priviledge, or other feature might be causing the problem? Thanks.

I wasn't aware that it required Power User rights. This is somewhat of a high security environment, and that can be difficult.
Do you, by chance, know what features of Power User rights are needed? I can perhaps grant those to this user, and make it work.
Do you think it is having a problem accessing portions of the registry, or files in certain folders, or something else?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Illustrator CS2 Run time error

i encountered error ..."Illustrator cs2\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe . This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. "
i know this issue is not new but i have tried solutions found in this forum here but to no avail. For you information, I am using Window XP SP3 , Dual Core 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM
    Tried solutions:
    1) Delete AIPref in c:\Documents & Settings\<User name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings ----> I just found this with local Admin login.Other user's login do not have this
folder (our pc running on domain)
( Suppose the path given in the solutions is in c:\Documents & Settings\<User name>\App Data\Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings but mine is different )
    2) Uninstall completely with all related folders cleared with RevoUninstaller and Reinstall back
    3) Download adobe illustrator cs2 patches update and run but to no avail.
    4) Thorough scan with AV and AntiMalware with zero detections found.
    5) Using different login name, it works. I do not know why. (But that particular user having problem opening it on the same pc)
Previously, it was working fine until recently. For your information, no windows update were performed before this problem happened.
    Please advice

As Wade said, try and trash the prefs first (C:\Users\Byron\AppData\Roaming\Adobe). If that doesn't help, check your system event viewer (Start Menu --> Programs --> Management) and find out, what component actrually throws an error. It's quite possible that there is some DLL missing or of the wrong version. Also make sure to run AI with administrative priviliges or at least turn off UAC. CS2 was long before Vista, so it will not be able to handle some of its intricacies correctly. You may also wish to run the program in compatibility mode. Might make things better.

My problem is when i open lllustrator after load finish the file thn will come out Error: "Could not complete the requested operation", i dunno y?
Have someone same problem with me anot? got any stion to solved it?

    Nick,
The first thing to try is to
    a) Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+Shift during startup,
or (if a) does not work)
    b) Move the folder
    a) is easy but irreversible, b) is more thorough and reversible, so if you like your settings and do not want to destroy them in vain, use b).
