Illustrator CS3 crashes on "Open" command

The only thing different between today and last night is the Adobe Updater tried and failed to download the 13.0.1 update. I had not used Illustrator today before the update tried to run, but failed with the installer message: The update cannot be applied to this product.
Had to use Illustrator CS3 this afternoon and it crashed every time I tried the Open command. It did this from both the start up screen, by going through the menu and by using the command-open keyboard short cut.
I have tried the command-option-shift start program to rebuild the prefs but that does not correct the situation.

Ended up deleting everything using the program in the Utilities folder reinstalling. Not sure I'll use any Illustrator updaters again.

  • Illustrator CS3 CRASHES on Place command

What a piece of, well, you know what.
It now crashes on using the "Place" command. Please do not steer me HERE: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb402521, as this does nothing. Trashing prefs does nothing, as well.
I'd just love to hear from the bright boys in the Adobe programming nuthouse, and hear their pathetic excuse for why Adobe is justified in selling everyone very expensive betaware.
And if anyone has a real fix, don't be shy to share.
    Regards-

Well I had also been using Illustrator CS3 for sometime and now I am on CS5. But I didn't see this issue. I have WinXP and Mac 10.5. Has place command never worked for you or it stopped working after certain operation? If you know specifics, why don't you try contacting Adobe and report the issue at:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
BTW, if you share specifics with forum members, they may also try reproducing issue and solve it.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes in "Open file" dialog when making a copy of a file

    Hi!
I have a user, who has quite a weird problem. We use the Design Standard CS3 package, since we can't afford to upgrade all 20 users to CS5 right now.
The problem occurs in Illustrator, when she goes to the "Open File" dialog. She often makes copies of files in there (ctrl+c, ctrl+v), so she has a backup of the file she's currently working on. Why she won't use Explorer to do that, I can't say.. she said something about it being easier this way.
The problem is, that often when she presses ctrl+v Illustrator crashes without warning. Usually when Illustrator crashes there's a warning about not enough memory, an error report or stuff like that, but none of that happens. It's fully patched (13.0.2), and there's no problem with the Print Spooler or the default printer.
I'm unable to replicate it on my computer, unfortunately, so I'm turning to you. Have any of you ever heard about this, seen it somewhere - and do you know what causes it?
    Best regards,
    Thomas

Sorry, forgot to add that she's running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, 32-bit on a HP Z400 Workstation.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashing when opening file

Whenever I open any AI file the file instantly closes before I can do anything to it.
It started when I was working on a project and tried to save it and it said "an unknown error has occured" and I'm pretty sure its because I had the Zune software open and Zune and AI don't get along
So I lost all of my work, but now I can't even open what I already had done because it crashes
I heard that fonts can cause this issue, I worked on my project on a Mac with different fonts then transfered it over to my PC and of course it couldn't find them so it just replaced them with a font that my PC knew
    could this relate to anything?
What can I do so that AI will be able to open my files? thank you!

    Jet,
Have you tried creating a new document and placing the troublesome file in it (ticking Paste Remembers Layers in the Layers flyout options)?
Otherwise, you may try to Move the folder or look at the Other options

  • Solved the Illustrator CS3 Crash Error upon saving file on my OS.

I was unable to save any Illustrator file. Upon saving a file Illustrator CS3 crashed and an error message would pop up and windows error reporting service would be launched to report the error and close Illustrator.exe.
Until i found out that i had the "Print Spooler Service" set to manual. I always start this service manually when need to print things. So, when i started this service and did a print from MS Word, and latter on thought to give Adobe Illustrator another try, i created an illustration and click on save and WOW it saved my file without any crashes.
To test this worked fully, i opened an older version .ai file and did some changes and used the save and save as command, both worked.
    I am relieved now.

This one is for all of you who couldn't get the above to work:
I have Windows XP and CS3 Illustrator.
This same problem happened to me in Photoshop. To fix it, I stopped Version Cue from grabbing the "Save As" window before I could save. Here's how:
    In Photoshop:
Edit > Preferences > File Handling...
In the last box, uncheck "Enable Version Cue." Problem solved. (I believe this may be turned on during Adobe update, but I am unsure. What I do know is the problem stems entirely from Version Cue.)
The fix for Illustrator is a bit more complex. The same thing happened to me in Illustrator (and it used to save just fine without any changes on my part) but Version Cue was already unchecked. That is why I wound up on this thread.
    1) In Illustrator:
Edit > Preferences > File Handling & Clipboard
    2) Uncheck "Enable Version Cue" (if it is already unchecked, this is okay, that is how mine was)
    3) Go into Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer)
Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator CS3 > Support Files > Contents > Windows
    4) In this folder is a sub folder called "Version Cue." Rename "Version Cue" to something else like "OLD Version Cue".
    5) You can now save files in Illustrator (may require relaunch of Illustrator).
    ***NOTE***
From one of the above posts I found that to keep from having to kill Illustrator every time it freezes on save (pre-fix) hold down "Alt+F4" to close the invisible "Save as" window that is locking things up.
If the above does not work, try some of the other things I did which I do not believe made a difference, but just in case:
    1) Choose a valid, online printer
    2) Close other programs
    3) Restart your computer
    4) Trash the old Illustrator preferences (Documents and Settings > (your login) > Application Data > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings)
    5) When Illustrator freezes, hit "alt" then after hit "enter" then select "Move" from the drop down menu at the top left. Drag a whole bunch without lifting the left click button. Restart Illustrator. Repeat.

  • InDesign cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents

ID cs3 crashes when opening CS2 documents, not when open dialog appears, but after I choose file and it "starts" opening it. (core duo, xp, clean install, all updates)
If i open ID by opening file, it crashes with standard windows dialog, if I open ID first, it does not crash, but rather behaves strangely, nothing is opening, if I move a mouse it turns to sand clock.
Same thing happens on all machines with ID cs3 in my office.
All other apps works fine. I did read every single forum about ID crashing and nothing helps. Files resaved in interchange format opens well. There must be something in the files that ID cs2 did and what id cs3 cannot open :( Any ideas?

    1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
    2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
    3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc.

but when it has been found, what can be done???
    any ideas?
    j

  • CS3 crashes whenever opening old docs where it can't find font

Illustrator CS3 crashes every time I try to open a document that has fonts in it that are no longer on my computer. I need to work on those files. What could be the solution?

You might try cleaning your font caches. Linotype's Font Explorer is free and will do that for you (as well as manage your fonts, if you choose to let it. I'm sure there are other apps that just clean font caches if that's what you prefer) Shut down all Adobe stuff and from the "tools" menu in FontExplorer, "clean application font caches" and "clean system font caches"

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes when file opened

However I try to open any illustrator file the app crashes. Has been running smoothly for ages. Have run through suggested things like removing prefs - and have reinstalled from disk but still the same problem... HELP
    (Running the latest OSX)

    I have the same problem,
Nini Tjäder, "Illustrator crashes when opening an .ai document" #1, 26 Nov 2008 2:18 pm
as do several other people in the office where I work. The supposed solution of trashing the Preferences folder does no good at all. There is something seriously wrong with AI CS3 on Mac and Adobe doesn't seem to know or care. Why is that?

  • Illustrator CS3 will not open! Please help!!

I've been using illustrator CS3 all day (no problems since I installed upon purchase over a year ago) and this afternoon illustrator crashed. i tried to open it again and nothing. it brings me to the illustrator screen saying "initializing" and then nothing. the icon stops bouncing and my hard drive races like it's about to explode. i've done every fix that's out there (including the version cue update fix), ran Tech Tool Pro, repaired my permissions in the disc utility, made sure everything is up to date, cleared all caches and still nothing. i've deleted over 5 gigs of stuff from my hard drive to make more space for Illustrator and am now running with 30 gigs free. still nothing. illustrator starts up in the dock, the CS3 screen comes up, gets to "initializing" and then the icon stops bouncing in the dock and the hard drive races. i'm at my wits end. can anyone help?

Weird the EXACT same thing has just happened to me. Funny I did almost the exact same things you did before looking up in this forum. Have uninstalled and then Reinstalled. My Photoshop works but also discovered my Indesign doesn't work. I never installed the Version Cue thing because I had problems with that in CS2. Other things seem to be running really slow, I use a great spam program called spam sieve that has also been crashing. My Leopard boot disc won't read for some reason so am going to try to reinstall system files tomorrow once I can borrow a friends disc. Did you ever get it back working? what did you do.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes when trying to place an item

I'm running CS3 on an iMac running OS 10.5.8.
Just recently (the past few days) my Illustrator has been crashing when I attempt to place a file. I've attempted to place a variety of files (.jpg, .eps, .PSD) and usually Illustrator would crash after selecting the file to be placed. Now it is crashing upon selecting 'Place' from the 'File' menu.
I attempted this fix (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402521.html) and it did not resolve the issue. I also checked to see if possible it was trying to open a directory that no longer exists when I choose 'Place' from the 'File' menu, but that also is not the issue.
Any input on what could be wrong? Thank you!

Thank you for that link! While none of the 'technical' suggestions worked (replacing files in the Version Cue folders in Library/Application Support) a lower-tech solution has seemed to work. Simple disable Version Cue in the preferences panel of Illustrator (I'm not using it anyway). So far so good! Who would have known such a low-tech solution would work!
Thanks again & I'll report if this seems to be a permanent solution or not. I just find it strange that Illustrator just started behaving this way when I don't believe Adobe Updater has updated my CS3 in over a month.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes on load.

    Hi,
I've been using my Adobe Creative Suite CS3 student edition for a while now both on an old mac and my new one. Everything was working fine until I updated when prompted. The update seemed to encounter a problem on Illustrator and after a while it skipped onto the rest of the updates. Now when I try to open Illustrator it crashes just after the 'Open Recent' and 'Create New' option box appears. I've tried running software update to see if I could get the update to load properly but it doesn't appear to be there.
Is there a way I can fix this?
    update
I downloaded a patch from Adobe Support that updated illustrator and allowed me to open it. However, when I start up the program, I lose my desktop settings and my background goes blue. I know this is a minor problem, but is there a way of fixing it?

    Hi,
I tried trashing the preferences from the illustrator cs settings folder, but got no luck.
I haven't downloaded anything from adobe support because I wasn't sure what would help me, because I'm running CS3 not CS5. What is a manual installer package and how do I find the right one?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes when changing locations during save or place. Mac, Yosemite

After updating to Yosemite and fixing the initial problem of not being able to open Illustrator (installing older Java). Illustrator now crashes every time I try to select a location to save a file. If I save without changing the file location it's not an issue. It also crashes when I want to PLACE a file and I try to navigate to the location.
MacBook Pro (2012), OSX 10.10.2 (Yosemite).
Adobe Illustrator CS3 (Yeah, I know).
Changing fonts doesn't seem to be a problem. Large files are OK. It's only when navigating to a location using a drop down menu in the SAVE AS or PLACE dialog box.
Any ideas of what might be wrong?

New information: I switched to the adobe dialog format and it fixed my issue. I'm leaving this here in case anyone else runs into this. However, I wouldn't mind finding out why it won't work the the OS dialog.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes after Yosemite upgrade

I have just upgraded to Yosemite on my 2010 Mac book pro.  Everything seems to be running ok, slightly slower but ok, the main issue I have is that Adobe Illustrator CS3 has stopped working.  The rest of the Adobe creative suite works fine - Photoshop, Indesign etc but not illustrator. When I first launched the app after the upgrade I was asked to install a Java upgrade which I did, I then re-launched Illustrator, and it tried to update, but a message came up stating - could not connect to internet...no internet connection, the initialising window opened and looked like it was going to work but it froze and I had to force quit.  Now it doesn't get passed the initialising window and just doesn't open.  I have cleaned the font cache and I have started my Mac in safe mode, illustrator works in this mode, but when I start up again as normal it still doesn't work there.  I have tried to find the preference file in users so I can delete it but I can't find this file and not really sure if this is what I need to do to get it working anyway!  I have reinstalled the Java update but this has not helped.  Sadly I don't have the installation discs so am unable to uninstall and then re-install the Adobe Suite.  If anyone can give me help I would be very grateful!  Just now I am very frustrated and wish I had never upgraded! Thanks in advance, and thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Found a solution and posted it here: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1610653?sr=stream
I also had problems with Adobe Illustrator CS3 and Yosemite. After the upgrade I installed Java for OS X 2014-001, as suggested by others. This seemed to work (sometimes) but when I opened Illustrator for the 2nd time it failed to open. Illustrator opened without crashing, but it did not show any menus, if I opened an .ai file the file did load and show on the screen, but I could not click on the window (unresponsive). Essentially this made Illustrator useless. I tried the following:
    Re-installation
Install Java for OS X 2014-001
    Cleaning font cache
    Checking permissions
Installing other versions of Java (both JRE and JDK)
Nothing seemed to help. Until finally 15 minutes ago I found the solution by accident:
    Open System Preferences > Java
Wait for the Java Control Panel to load
Open Adobe Illustrator (while keeping the Java Control Panel window open)
You can also make a launcher with AppleScript to automate the process:
    tell application "System Preferences"
        activate
set current pane to pane "Java"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
repeat until exists process "Java Control Panel"
            delay 1
        end repeat
        quit
    end tell
    delay 2
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
        activate
    end tell
tell application "System Preferences" to close every window
    do shell script "killall java"

  • Re: Illustrator CC crashes on opening

I have the same problem only on Windows 7. Ever since upgrading to CC my Adobe Illustrator crashes right after it opens everytime. This is a major set back, and I didn't read any clear solutions in the replys. Has anyone figured this out yet on a PC?

    Hi Cmarabate,
    Try the following steps:
    1) Disable the "Graphic Cards" driver using Device Manager and then launch AI CC. Once AI CC gets launched successfuly you may enable the driver of the display graphic card. If this works then note that if you delete the AI preferences by chance then you have to perform these steps again.
    2) Update the "Graphic Cards" driver and then launch AI.
Do let me know if this resolves the issue if not than:
Please share the crash dump file “Illustrator.dmp”. The steps to create the dump file are:
Open the “Task Manager” when the Adobe Illustrator CC crash window is displayed.
In the Task Manager window right-click on the name/string “Adobe Illustrator CC” and select the option “Create Dump File” in the context menu
It will display that this command will create a file “Illustrato.dmp” in your “Temp” folder. Click on OK to create this. Wait for the action to get this completed.
Once the above file gets completed you can have this file by typing “%temp%” in your “Run” window (press “window button + r” on the keyboard). On clicking the enter key the TEMP folder can be opened.
Look there for the file name “Illustrator.dmp” and share it with me [email protected] using dropbox.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Raghuveer
