Illustrator CS3 disappears on New or Open a file, Win XP
I'm having this problem on a couple of our machines. Illustrator will start just fine but as soon as you go to open an existing file or create a new file, it closes without any error message. If a different user logs into the same machine, Illustrator will work just fine.
I've tried to delete the Illustrator profile without any luck. My only work arounds are to wipe the machine or the user's entire profile and start from scratch.
The machines are Dell laptops running Windows XP sp2 and it is Illustrator CS3 with updates.
Thanks for any assistance.
Hi - Thank you for the suggestion, I did fix them but still have the issue. I think it may be font related... the name of the computer gets jumbled, has strange characters in it or just goes blank right before the program crashes. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!!

Illustrator CS3 freezes when saving or opening ANY files
Yesterday while running Illustrator (13.0.0), Photoshop and AfterEffects (CS3 for all), Illustrator suddenly started hanging (spinning beachball) when I tried to save a small file. Subsequently noticed it would no longer open files, or save any other files - always spinning the beachball when opening or saving. Force-quitting says "Illustrator not responding".
I trashed Illustrator prefs - same problem.
I re-booted - same problem.
Updated to 13.0.1 - same problem.
No problem saving/opening files in other apps.
Also tried running a previous install of Illustrator CS2, and now THAT has the same save/open beachball spinning problem, too! I've gotta get this running.
Don't know what to try next, short of a complete re-install.
Been running all CS3 apps trouble-free for 4.5 months, nothing new installed, no new fonts.
Any suggestions?
Mac OS 10.4.1, Dual 2.7 PPC G5, 4.5 GB RAMDonna - Fortunately I did get Illustrator saving and opening again, unfortunately I'm not exactly sure what solved the problem. I went through the routine of dumping prefs a few times, restarting, etc., but also added a string of expletives along the way, and eventually the thing just started to work again.
I think the solution had to do with the expletives, but I can't remember the exact order in which I screamed them.
Wish I could be of more help. -
I am trying to install Illustrator CS3 onto my new MBAir.
I am trying to install Illustrator CS3 onto my new MBAir. I have the CDROM for CS3 and want to download onto the Air. Tried copying the files via TimeMachine share but didn't work. Do I need to buy an external USB to download or is there another option?
Adobe applications typically place files in all sorts of locations, so trying to install Illustrator from a TM backup or copying from another system is very difficult since you probably can't get all the files. You'll need either an external CD/DVD drive or another computer with a drive you can access, either for Remote Disk:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287
or if it's a Mac to make a disk image of the Illustrator installer CD which you can then copy to the MBA and run.

Illustrator CS3 shuts down whenever I open a previously saved document
this is strange, but if I am working on something in Illustrator CS3 using Vista, and I try and double click a document I was working on previously to open in illustrator, it completely closes out the program unless I go to file - open, is there apatch out there for this? I am using a new laptop with Vista -
Hi Thom,
If you prefer Word (not Pages) to open all TextEdit documents, do this.
In Finder, click once on a TextEdit document and go to Menu > File > Get Info (command i). In the Info window, look for Open With. You may have to click on the right-pointing triangle to reveal the options. From the Pop-up menu, choose Word. If you do not see Word in the list, choose Other. That will take you to your Applications Folder where you can choose the application to open that text document.
Back in the Info window, click on Change All... That will set that app as the preferred app for all textEdit documents. Please reply if you have trouble.
Regards,

Illustrator crashes when I try to open a file that I created previously
I need to open a file that I created on this computer (with this version of Illustrator), however the file will not open without crashing Illustrator. Unfortunately, I am financially unable to upgrade to a higher version of Illustrator for a few more months. I have copied the entire report below. Let me know if you have any suggestions:
thank you so much!

You will need to copy your file to the "Shared" folder in the old user folder so you'll have access to it in the new user account. -
Illustrator CS shuts down when I open a file
I've had Illustrator (CS 11.0.0) on my desktop machine for a while but not used it much. I am now intending to switch all my work from Creature House Expression3 to Illustrator (can't face upgrading to the MS product) and loaded Illustrator on my laptop so I can work away from home.
It loaded OK but if I try to open an existing Illustrator file or start a new project the application shuts down immediately. There's no fuss, and no messages, it just shuts down.
I just uninstalled and reinstalled Illustrator but the problem is still there. It runs OK on my desktop PC.
My laptop is a new high spec Dell XPS with not much on it so there's no question of lack of room or power. It's running windows XP.
Advice to get me working on the laptop would be greatly appreciated.Hi Jacob
Thanks for persevering. I found it and I've experimented with creating a subfolder and moving the folder there, and moving the whole thing to the desktop. Still the same problem, Illustrator shuts down if I attempt to open a file. I tried rebooting too.
Eventually I removed Illustrator (using a wizard) then searched for illustrator files and deleted a few more things I found lying around. I removed the Illustrator tutorial stuff I had on there too. there was one font file that I couldn't delete though - it said I didn'thave authorisation - strange. Then I reinstalled Illustrator and tried again (and skipped when it said it had problems with this file as it was in use) - same problem.
There is a difference between the contents of the settings file on my laptop and on my desktop - I don't know if this is a useful diagnostic or not. On the laptop I have one folder: Plugins (with nothing in it) and two files: AI Color Settings, and AIMenuFaceCache.
On the desktop (where Illustrator works) I have the folder Plugins (again empty) and files: AI Color Settings, AIAppResources, AIMenuFaceCache, AIprefs, PDF Presets, Plug-in Cache.ARTZ, Print Presets, Transparencey Flattener Presets.
I just searched for aiprefs on the laptop (on the C drive using hidden files - it isn't there).
I'm stuck again now :-) Does this mean anything to you? -
Photoshop CS3 doesn't respond when opening a file (jpg or .psd)
I have been using CS3 since it first came out with no trouble at all. I am running OS 10.4.11. Then a couple days ago, when I would open a file, such as a jpg, the color wheel just spins and spins. When I check the finder, it says that Photoshop is not responding, so I Force Quit, restart computer, etc.
After reading the forums, here is what I have done so far, with no luck:
Made sure that I have the most current version of Photoshop CS3.
Relaunched the program - resetting the preferences.
Set the default printer to "PDF."
Moved and renamed the Plug-Ins folder.
I have also uninstalled the program and then reinstalled it. That fixed things for a day or so, but now I am back where I started. I have not made any changes to my computer. I have not downloaded anything new. The only thing I can figure, is that the first time it happened, I was opening a jpg of an image off a CD from a photographer. I had already opened several images from this CD with no problem. I thought that maybe that particular image was corrupt, but once I reinstalled, I was able to open that image with no problem.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer to me!Also, out of curiosity, I wanted to see if it would open a new file created in Photoshop (since it launches fine and will open a new document). I tried this and got the spinning color wheel, but the file did save with a preview, but when I tried to open that file --- spinning wheel again.
Then, I thought I would see if I could place a jpg in that new file. It did that fine, but when I tried to save the .psd file, I got the spinning color wheel again.
Thanks! -
New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign
I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
Thanks in anticipation.Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
Just pondering the best way forward.
I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
Thanks -
I have a new machine running XP Pro 64. Intel i7 processor, 12 gb ram.
I am trying to place a fairly small Photoshop image (with layers) into Illustrator CS3. I have done this countless times with XP 32 bit os.
But now, I cannot place even a small Photoshop image into Illustrator... I keep getting the error "Not enough memory to place the file."
I tried the suggestion of 'right-clicking' the Illy launch icon and going to properties/compatibility and then selecting "Run this program in compatibility mode for..." and then I check marked Windows XP.
Someone else said this worked in Vista 64.....but it DID NOT work for XP 64.....dang it.
Any suggestions???
ThanksOn Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 04:37:08PM -0600, Todd-sta uttered:
Well..... I just tried the same function on my 64 bit Leopard operating system on my MacBook Pro just for kicks. Worked flawlessly!!
So, why won't it work on XP 64 bit? Is this a case of 'the mac os is just better?"
Talk about flame bait -- You trying to start the platform wars again? ;-D
Can anyone tell me if they can place a Photoshop image from WINDOWS 7 64 bit OS into Illustrator without issue? We're talking 'PLACE' .... not paste.
Don't know about Windoze 7; but that operation works in Vista x64. XP x64 is
quite flaky at times. It was never finished IMHO.
Sure would like to know. I'd upgrade if it made the difference.

Photoshop cs3 crashes when trying to open any file
When I purchased CS3 Web Premium it took several months of tooling around to get it to install on Vista HP. Photoshop cs3 worked fine for a few months after installation. It now refuses to open any files - just goes to an eternal spinning icon. When I try to shut it down, it just says not responding. I reinstalled once (takes hours) and it worked for an afternoon. Next morning back to not opening files.
Macine is dell xps M1210, 2Gb Ram, Core 2 T5600 processor, NVIDIA Go 7400 64Mb card.
Help.Problem (hopefully) solved!
file>open has always been available, but when i select a file and open it is when it hangs. Hitting esc then has no effect.
Tried the reset preferences - still no change.
A friend suggested delete all network printers and voila - it worked! Still keeping fingers and toes crossed every time I use pshop, a little annoying that I have to send files to another machine to print (fortunately I rarely need to print files), and input devices hard to use with everything crossed.
Thanks for suggestions Dave. -
Illustrator converts ligatures to outlines when opening InDesign files
Hello,
We have a workflow where designers create files in InDesign, save as PDFs, then we open them up in Illustrator to adjust some text.
With some files from InDesign, when we open them Illustrator reports "To preserve appearance, some text has been outlined." After that we can't easily manipulate the text there, we have to delete the outlines and re-enter the text.
This seems to happen when the words contain ligatures. Text fields which do not contain ligatures are preserved and work as we expect.
Is there something that would cause Illustrator to be unable to understand the ligatures coming from an InDesign-generated PDF? Or an option to tell Illustrator to preserve the text, even if it has to "break" the ligatures?
Thanks!
-----Scott.Thanks for the response Harron!
I don't have the version or font information in front of me, I will get that and post it as soon as I can.
Illustrator and InDesign are not on the same computer (or even the same organization for that matter), we are looking into whether the fonts are identical.
We can't easily change the workflow, the PDFs are coming from an outside company and we are using an Illustrator script to do some conversions. We are working with the files by hand in Illustrator to troubleshoot this problem, and when we have it working we will make the appropriate changes to our script.
Thanks again! I will get the other information posted shortly. -
Illustrator CS6 color mode default CMYK opening CS5 files as RGB
Hi.
Having a bit of trouble as Illustrator CS6 (that I've set to a default color mode of CMYK) is opening CS5 CMYK files as RGB color profile. I don't get a choice. And so it is messing with my color palettes when I convert back to a CMYK color profile.
Can anyone help? I can't find any answers when I search.
Any assistance appreciated. It's potentially going to kill a lot of time if I can't fix this.
ThanksHi Rachel,
You can not set a default color mode to make Illustrator open all files in a certain color mode. A file opens in the mode it was saved.
What makes you think that the CS5 files that open as RGB were CMYK and not RGB? -
Illustrator cs3 mac no more text in my file
Hello,
I made a file with some text and images. I save this job with a computer.
I open this job on an other computer, and some of my text are missing.
I work on both computer with suitcase fusion and the same polices.
I don't understand why i lose my text.
My illustrators is a multiple license, my updates are OK.
Can you help me ?
Thanks
Best regards.Try opening the file in Acrobat and see if you have all your text. or try creating a new empty document and place the file you now have into that one File . Place.
But tell us if the text is missing or is it white or no color or is it on different layers and are all the layers visible when you open them.
Give us some more information. -
Frequent Illustrator CS3 crashes on new Mac Pro
So I just got a new Mac Pro last week- I'm running OSX 10.5.2. I'm running into an issue where Illustrator is quitting on me a LOT. I had been running it on a dual 2.0 Ghz G5 for over a year
and it was super stable, I could probably count the number of times it quit out on one hand. now I literally have to save every 2 minutes or I lose work. It's definitely not normal.
I know this issue is super vague, but does anyone have any idea where to even start to try to address this?... It's starting to affect work!
Thanks!Dear Chris:
I suppose this isn't related but I'll use the opportunity to warn you: be careful. I probably solved my problem turning off the Auto-Activation and used the Illustrator normally for a week, although I had a couple of (surprising) problems with Photoshop, one crash of my system included (it's surprising because in the nine previous months, I've had a minimum amount of problems). But yesterday I couldn't start my computer at all and, as it turned out, my mainboard was dead. My guarantee protected me but if this had happened a couple of months later this would have been extremely painful. I will need to wait a week in order to receive a new mainboard. Anyway, I've been advised to renew my guarantee via Apple Care: about $300 to receive a two-year extension of the guarantee.

App windows disappear when new app opened
I don't use spaces. I am on a mac.
This seems to be something that only happens in 10.6
I'm working in (for example) Mail.
I need to check on something in (for example) a Word file.
I open Word.
Mail disappears.
It hasn't quit, BUT
I have to go to the dock and click on Mail to get the window to reopen.
This happens all day long with almost every app. It's annoying. How can I KEEP all windows open? But I'm NOT hitting the option key. Apparently this is a default setting for snow leopard. Is there a way to defeat it?

Question on the Solaris Translation Storage Buffer (TSB)
Hi all -- I'm new to Solaris and am trying to understand how kernel handles TLB misses. From reading the manuals, I gather that instruction and data TLB misses cause an interrupt to the OS. Thereafter, the miss handler uses the MMU Tag Register and T
