Illustrator CS3 opens but unresponsive

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum, so apologies in advance for any stupidity.
I am using Illustrator CS3 on OS X Yosemite (v10.10.1). Since upgrading the OS, I had some issues opening the program. So I tried clicking on the most recent file I saved in Illustrator (which I had worked on about a week before upgrading to Yosemite). The file loads and Illustrator opens, however when I try to click on anything, nothing happens. It's like my screen froze. On my dock, Illustrator appears to be loaded, but the application doesn't appear on the Mac toolbar (it says Finder in the upper righthand corner).
I would say this had to do with the Yosemite upgrade, but Photoshop and InDesign appear to be working fine. Anyone else have this issue? Would prefer the hassle of re-installing.
Thanks!

LMT -- try this:
1. Open System Preferences > Java
2. Wait for the Java Control Panel to load
3. Open Adobe Illustrator (while keeping the Java Control Panel window open)
Worked for me after many moons of attempting to open AI CS3 (while my other CS apps were opening just fine).
I got this info from: http://roaringapps.com/app/adobe-illustrator-cs3 down in the Comments area, as relayed by Gary Y.

  • Photoshop CS3 opens but immediately freezes every time- Windows

I'm attempting to use CS3 on a Dell laptop- 64 bit- Windows 7.
When first installed it worked fine, then suddenly it was non-functional.  It will open, but ANY request at all will cause it to freeze.  I have to close it through Task Manager.  I get no error messages, and when I went in to view the event viewer there is nothing there under Applications.
I've changed the default printer to a non-network but haven't done much else as I don't have administrative priviledges on this (work) computer and our IT guy is uninterested in helping me figure out the problem.  We tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that did nothing.
    Any help appreciated!

Run Sysinternals System Monitor and watch registry and file access as well as the various DLL hookups. Use filtering set to Photoshop.exe and Error or Failure operation to find the culprit amongst those hundreds of thousands operations. I'm sure your IT guy can help you with that if he's halfway smart...

  • Illustrator CS3 opening the same file twice

Hoping someone has an answer for this because I'm stumped.
Just set up CS3 on a new iMac for one of my users, imported her Illustrator files from her hold PC (also running cs3).
When she opens a file its opening the same file twice. When she modifies one, its all being mirrored on the other. When she saves, she has to save both "files" although they're really only 1 file.
    Any ideas?

You can open multiple windows looking at the same file. It comes in handy when you're zoomed in, working on some detail and want to see the big picture...
Open a new one by going to the window menu and selecting "new window" This will open a new window with "filename:2" in the title bar.
To get rid of additional windows, just close them. You'll have to save the file to get it to remember that the other windows are closed.

  • Illustrator CS4 opens but won't create a new document

    Hi,
I've got an Illustrator CS4 problem. I can launch Illustrator CS4 and it launches quite happily. However, when i create a new document nothing happens. When I open a document nothing happens. I'm a local admin on my PC. It's running Windows XP SP3. I've re-installed Illustrator to see if that fixed the problem but it didn't. I have Photosop CS4 on and it opens documents etc without a problem.
    Cheers
    Steven

If you cannot create new docs, it doesn't see its templates, most likely. For whatever reason they are either really not there or simpyl blocked by the operating system due to permission issues. At least one of them must exist or else the dialog won't open up. Check the program directory (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Support Files\Required\New Document Profiles) and your user home directory. Other than that it could of course always be more generic graphics card problems...

  • Illustrator CS3

Hi I have a user at my company, Illustrator cs3 opens fine, but if file new or file open and select a file is done, the app completely crashes and closes down, have tried uninstalling then re-installing + installing the updates from adobe site and still no joy
    Regards
    Alec

An issue with the default printer could also cause this issue.
If the printer is a network or unavailable printer, try to add a local printer as the default printer. If you have Acrobat installed as well, use the Adobe PDF printer.

  • Illustrator CS3 Trial

I was trying to download an CS 3 Trial version to see if and
how it'll open my Freehand MX Files. I thought this process was a
complete disgrace! I tried and tried and I still haven't a trial
version. The Process to register takes ages and just when u click
on download nothing happens. Has anybody got a working trial from
the Adobe site? Is there an alternative to Illustrator?
I doubt it since Corel has stopped doing Mac Software. Is
Quark Inc. doing anything to keep the market open and consumer
friendly? Probably not cause they sell the most expensive Program.
Why is it that people have to buy Software which is overpriced and
obsolete after 3 or 4 years?

    disgrace! I tried and
Illustrator CS3 opens FH files surprisingly well. Some
effects and gradients are omitted but my test files had for example
all the text elements as they were in the original.

  • MAC Adobe Illustrator CS3 cannot be installed because it conflicts with Adobe Illustrator CS3

    Model Name:iMac / Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo / Memory:4 GB
When I installed Illustrator CS3 at the first time, I didn't complete it and closed it. While I installed it again, it said "Adobe Illustrator CS3 cannot be installed because it conflicts with Adobe Illustrator CS3". I was be stopped on this step, so I deleted the Illustrator CS3 from Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers without clicking it to uninstall. And I deleted other Illustrator CS3 files. After that, I tried to reinstall Illustrator CS3 again, but it kept to say "Adobe Illustrator CS3 cannot be installed because it conflicts with Adobe Illustrator CS3".
I cannot find any Illustrator in my MAC. What is wrong? How can I install Illustrator again? Should I format the computer and install all the applications again?

On the Adobe site probably under support do a search for Adobe CS 3 Clean Up Script.
Before running the script read the instructions al the instructions first, do not assume you understand from reading the first sentence. There are some files that are not so obvious that are necessary for activation and they are probably still around but they can only be removed by the script.
Next time you will have to read the instructions.
The only other ways around this is the do an archival reinstall of your system or if that does not work a complete reinstall of your system. Running the script is the easier and better way to do this but you must read the instructions completely first.

  • Illustrator CS3 instalation fails, request me the CD

I'm trying to install the trial of Ai CS3, but when i install it, start but stop and request me the Adobe Illustrator CS3 CD, but i don't know why.

I don't want to install Rosetta if I don't have to.
But you will? Not sure what else you are looking for. This is an inherent limitation in all CS3 installers and apps - they require Rosetta, if only for the tiniest bit. unless you plan on upgrading your AI, that's the way it will have to be.

  • Font substitution in Illustrator CS3.

Illustrator CS3 opens a very complicated file and substitutes one of the fonts (after I click OK).
The substited font works very well (spacing, readability, etc.).
How do I find out what font is being used by Ilustrator?
Once I know what font is being used I can then permanantly make the font substitution myself (which I know how to do).
    Thanks.

    Done. Much Appreciated.
Great to have an informative and helpful forum.

  • Opening illustrator cs3 file in Fireworks changes color, but not code

I created a vector graphic in Illustrator CS3, with RGB. I
then opened the file in Fireworks and everything looks fine because
it's still vector. But the color is not right. It's close, but much
lighter. The RGB values are exactly the same.
    Anyone have this problem before?
    thanks,
    Justin

Fireworks does not use color profiles, so the colors you see
in Fireworks will be what the majority of Web site visitors will
see (skipping, for the moment, the huge problem of monitor
variation). Only Safari displays images using the color profiles.
I recently read a moderately controversial blog post on
setting/disabling profiles in Photoshop (comments disabled at 200),
but many people appreciated the article here:
    Best
Practice Color Setup for Web Designers
So, while your experience is with Illustrator, it's probably
the same underlying cause. Illustrator is showing you the colors
with an ICC profile, even though they're in RGB. When you open the
image in Fireworks, you see the colors without a profile.
This is one reason I like using Fireworks. I have a better
feeling about what my visitors are going to see (again, setting
aside the huge problem of monitor variation).

  • How to open an Arabic PDF in Illustrator CS3 ME without outlining the font?

    Hi,
I need to use Illustrator CS3 ME (Middle East) in order to edit some pages of an Arabic PDF file.
Now, the problem is that as soon as I open the page in Illustrator, all of the Arabic text gets outlined. The English text doesn't get outlined.
I need to edit the text, so this is a big problem.
I don't have the original source files (InDesign).
Also, it is too much editing to be doing in Acrobat.
Is there some sort of solution for this?
    Thanks,
    Ola

    Hi,
The font is Arial, which fully supports Arabic, as far as I know.
How do I enable glyph protection in the prefs?
How do I set the glyph substituion in the type palette? I am sorry for the
ignorance, but I usually work with InDesign, and quite rarely with
Ilustrator. This is a special case for me...
The formatting is very ordinary. Nothing special.
I really hope there is some solution for this....
    Ola
    2010/6/4 Mylenium <[email protected]>
What fonts does it use? Is glyph protection enabled in teh prefs? What are
the settings for glyph substitution in the type palette? Does it have any
specific formatting? If it gets outlined, it was probably mangled in ways
that prevent using the life font or the relevant font is missing
    alltogether...

  • Fix found: Illustrator CS3 (PC) crashes when opening file or starting new file

    Issue:
-Running Windows XP, tried installing CS3 Web premium on a new machine.
-All programs worked well except Illustrator; when opening a file or creating a new one, illustrator would crash and give a message of "Microsoft has experienced an error" blah blah "Send error report?"
-when trying to "open with.." by right clicking on a file, it would crash as well but give the message "The file xxxxxx.pdf is not a valid Win 32 application." Blah blah. Same thing with .ai files, etc.
    Attempts to fix:
    -re-installed CS3
    -updated Illustrator to 13.0.1
    -switched users
    -cleaned up fonts
    Fix that worked:
-uninstalled pre-loaded version of Acrobat that came with PC.  I had a suspicion that the newer version of Acrobat on the new PC (9.5 or similar) might conflict with Illustrator, as the version of Acrobat to come with CS3 was 8 (I believe). This seemed to fix the problem.
    Cheers,
    Mike

lol issue still remains... if an admin sees this please remove entire post
    Thanks

  • Illustrator CS3 wont open

    Hi folks,
Ive recently started having problems trying to open Illy CS3...Im getting the window saying 'The application Illustrator has unexpectedly quit' when I try and open it.
From reading these forums I have done various things that people have said to do, ie:
    1) Send the crash report
    2) Check font book for any corrupt fonts
    3) Deleted fonts I never use.... now I have 288 fonts, is that still too many?
    4) Ive created a new user but still no luck
    5) Ive restarted the machine a few times
    6) Ive went to user/library/preferences and deleted the illustrator cs3 folder
and none of these have worked.
    Im using a 24" Imac...2.93 GHz...Intel core 2 duo...4GB memory...and ive still loads of space on disc.
    Any help is great.
    Thanks

I have to ask you a couple of things first,
Did you quit Illustrator before you trash the Illustrator Settings folder?
Did at the same time trash the com.adobe.illustrator.plist file also in your user's preferences? You can try trashing both but you must first quite Illustrator.
Did you try to disable all your fonts except for the systems fonts?
When you created a new user did you load your fonts under that new users? I think you loaded your fonts, you should not have if you did!
Did you delete the font data base files the AdobeFnt.lst files?
I do not think you did that at all.
I think you have a corrupt font or your scratch disk is pretty full.

  • Illustrator CS3 will not open! Please help!!

I've been using illustrator CS3 all day (no problems since I installed upon purchase over a year ago) and this afternoon illustrator crashed. i tried to open it again and nothing. it brings me to the illustrator screen saying "initializing" and then nothing. the icon stops bouncing and my hard drive races like it's about to explode. i've done every fix that's out there (including the version cue update fix), ran Tech Tool Pro, repaired my permissions in the disc utility, made sure everything is up to date, cleared all caches and still nothing. i've deleted over 5 gigs of stuff from my hard drive to make more space for Illustrator and am now running with 30 gigs free. still nothing. illustrator starts up in the dock, the CS3 screen comes up, gets to "initializing" and then the icon stops bouncing in the dock and the hard drive races. i'm at my wits end. can anyone help?

Weird the EXACT same thing has just happened to me. Funny I did almost the exact same things you did before looking up in this forum. Have uninstalled and then Reinstalled. My Photoshop works but also discovered my Indesign doesn't work. I never installed the Version Cue thing because I had problems with that in CS2. Other things seem to be running really slow, I use a great spam program called spam sieve that has also been crashing. My Leopard boot disc won't read for some reason so am going to try to reinstall system files tomorrow once I can borrow a friends disc. Did you ever get it back working? what did you do.

  • Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

    Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
    Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
    Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
    Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
    This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)
