Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)

  • Illustrator CS3 will not open! Please help!!

I've been using illustrator CS3 all day (no problems since I installed upon purchase over a year ago) and this afternoon illustrator crashed. i tried to open it again and nothing. it brings me to the illustrator screen saying "initializing" and then nothing. the icon stops bouncing and my hard drive races like it's about to explode. i've done every fix that's out there (including the version cue update fix), ran Tech Tool Pro, repaired my permissions in the disc utility, made sure everything is up to date, cleared all caches and still nothing. i've deleted over 5 gigs of stuff from my hard drive to make more space for Illustrator and am now running with 30 gigs free. still nothing. illustrator starts up in the dock, the CS3 screen comes up, gets to "initializing" and then the icon stops bouncing in the dock and the hard drive races. i'm at my wits end. can anyone help?

Weird the EXACT same thing has just happened to me. Funny I did almost the exact same things you did before looking up in this forum. Have uninstalled and then Reinstalled. My Photoshop works but also discovered my Indesign doesn't work. I never installed the Version Cue thing because I had problems with that in CS2. Other things seem to be running really slow, I use a great spam program called spam sieve that has also been crashing. My Leopard boot disc won't read for some reason so am going to try to reinstall system files tomorrow once I can borrow a friends disc. Did you ever get it back working? what did you do.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes when changing locations during save or place. Mac, Yosemite

After updating to Yosemite and fixing the initial problem of not being able to open Illustrator (installing older Java). Illustrator now crashes every time I try to select a location to save a file. If I save without changing the file location it's not an issue. It also crashes when I want to PLACE a file and I try to navigate to the location.
MacBook Pro (2012), OSX 10.10.2 (Yosemite).
Adobe Illustrator CS3 (Yeah, I know).
Changing fonts doesn't seem to be a problem. Large files are OK. It's only when navigating to a location using a drop down menu in the SAVE AS or PLACE dialog box.
Any ideas of what might be wrong?

New information: I switched to the adobe dialog format and it fixed my issue. I'm leaving this here in case anyone else runs into this. However, I wouldn't mind finding out why it won't work the the OS dialog.

  • Illustrator CS3 hangs when opening document

    Hey
Since this morning, on one of our Intel iMacs, Illustrator just won't open any documents. The program load screen shows up, completes and gives you the dialogue box about opening recent files or new files etc. But when you try and open anything you simply get the colour "wheel of death" and you have to Force Quit Illustrator.
I have tried deleting preferences, reinstalling, and running programs like Onyx to clean disks etc, but nothing seems to work. We have also taken the files over to other Macs where they open perfectly fine. It's really just on this one iMac.
Any ideas would be very very helpful.
    Thanks

Very strange. I'm looking into it now. It was just a DVD with some of our old backup files. The designer was trying to look at previous work files. It caused the crash on his iMac and on a Macbook Pro that we have extra. I also put the disk into my G5 PPC and I wasn't having any problems, until I tried to open a specific Illustrator file on the disk itself. Must just be a corrupt file of some sorts. But as soon as I remove the disk again, everything runs smoooothly :-)

  • Illustrator CS3 can't open eps files

I can't seem open any eps files. It won't open in Photoshop either. Both of them I get this message: "Parser module cannot parse the file."
Am I missing a vital component to install in CS3?

Some research solved my issue. Need to create a registry entry for Illustrator CS3 (v13) in the eps file extension section of the windows 7 registry.
    1. Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.eps\OpenWit hProgids
    2. Create a new "binary value" key called "Adobe.Illustrator.13" (leave the value blank).
That's it. CS3 is now a valid choice for eps files. Hope this helps anyone who has the same issue.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes on "Open" command

The only thing different between today and last night is the Adobe Updater tried and failed to download the 13.0.1 update. I had not used Illustrator today before the update tried to run, but failed with the installer message: The update cannot be applied to this product.
Had to use Illustrator CS3 this afternoon and it crashed every time I tried the Open command. It did this from both the start up screen, by going through the menu and by using the command-open keyboard short cut.
I have tried the command-option-shift start program to rebuild the prefs but that does not correct the situation.

Ended up deleting everything using the program in the Utilities folder reinstalling. Not sure I'll use any Illustrator updaters again.

  • Illustrator CS3 "Unknown Error" while trying to save (Win Vista)

When ever I try to save my Illustrator file on my home computer, a Vista machine, I get an error that says "Unknown Error." When I save from school on XP computers I don't have this problem. However. While this is inconvenient it isn't the core problem, from school I was able to successfully save to a PDF however when I took my project to get printed, the PDF file came up blank both on screen and on paper, while the Illustrator CS2 and CS3 version were visible on screen they did not materialize on paper.
Can anyone help me work through these issues?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Well it says Windows compatable right on the CS3 Master Collection box. Perhaps I'm making a mistake by calling it Illustrator 3, under file name the full title is "Adode Illustrator CS3"
Here's a screen cap if you'd like to see for yourself.

Now that thats out of the way, any idea what is causing this?

  • My mac has gotten super slow.  Internet - slow, opening applications - slow, everything is slow.  1985 slow.  I am about to treat my mac like a PC and throw it out the window slow.

My mac is slowing down daily.  I have check the memory.  Seems find.  I have freed up hard disk space.  I have checked for viruses and trojan horses, there are none.  I have updated anything I can update.  Any tricks, key strokes, magic potions, anything to get my speed back.  Waiting in the modern computer world in driving me crazy.

Well part of the problem may the amount of RAM you have, while Lion will run on 2GB of RAM it won't run very quickly. If you can upgrade the RAM on your iMac beyond 2GB then I would strongly recommend it. You can easily tell if your system is starved for RAM by running Activity Monitor (Application's - Utilities - Activity Monitor). When you notice the next slow down check AM to look for two things, first do you see any processes taking a large %CPU, if so that is one issue. Next in AM click the System Memory tab check to see how much FREE RAM it has. As a general rule of thumb your system should have 500MB of FREE RAM at all times to run well. This will look similar to:
If you see less than 500MB of FREE RAM then that is your issue.
Also, OS X tends to run best of the HD has 10-15% of the total HD space available. If your HD is almost full that will really slow down performance. To check open Finder, select your HD on the Sidebar and type Command I (I as in Ivan) and look to see the capacity of the HD and the amount of available space.

  • Illustrator CS3 won't open EPS.

I have had a problem recently of large EPS files not opening in CS3 on my new work PC.
The following error comes up when I try and open the file:
"Can't open the Illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."
When I click Okay, I'm greeted with either a completely blank page, or a page where some elements are missing - usually embedded images, which are presumably what's causing the problem.
Before you ask, I've tried the following:
Placing the unlinked EPS into a new document - no love.
Placing the EPS in InDesign and exporting - I just get a blank, grey image and a file that won't open.
Opening the EPS in Acrobat - again, no love.
If I PLACE the file in a new document as a LINK, I get a preview image - it's when I try to embed it that it fails.
Now, I'm not after a way to fix my file, because I know it's corrupted and probably can't be saved. What I would like to know is why it keeps happening and how can I stop it?
I've noticed that it happens mainly when I place large image files into a document. I've also noticed, after some testing to try and find a fix, that if I save as an AI file, it opens fine, large images and all.
This kinda doesn't help me, as I need to save EPS files so that the files can be opened in other applications. Unfortunately, not everybody has Illustrator.
My computer is BRAND NEW and it can't simply be a memory issue because I have 8gb of RAM. Full specs are listed below.
I would appreciate an answer to this as it is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially given it never used to happen on my OLD work PC, with the exact same version of Illustrator.
    PC Specs
    Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHZ
    8GB RAM
    64 bit OS
    Adobe Illustator CS3 (v.13)

Sure it can. AI CS3 is a 32bit app and only uses 2.something GB of memory. Only CS6 is natively 64bit and can use more memory.
You're right, Mylenium. It seems to be a compatibility issue.
I changed Illustrator's compatibility under Properties to an earlier version of Windows, in this case Windows Vista, and it now works fine. Or at least for the moment.
If any more problems arise I'll post them here, but the problems I listed in my previous post are no longer occuring.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes in "Open file" dialog when making a copy of a file

    Hi!
I have a user, who has quite a weird problem. We use the Design Standard CS3 package, since we can't afford to upgrade all 20 users to CS5 right now.
The problem occurs in Illustrator, when she goes to the "Open File" dialog. She often makes copies of files in there (ctrl+c, ctrl+v), so she has a backup of the file she's currently working on. Why she won't use Explorer to do that, I can't say.. she said something about it being easier this way.
The problem is, that often when she presses ctrl+v Illustrator crashes without warning. Usually when Illustrator crashes there's a warning about not enough memory, an error report or stuff like that, but none of that happens. It's fully patched (13.0.2), and there's no problem with the Print Spooler or the default printer.
I'm unable to replicate it on my computer, unfortunately, so I'm turning to you. Have any of you ever heard about this, seen it somewhere - and do you know what causes it?
    Best regards,
    Thomas

Sorry, forgot to add that she's running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, 32-bit on a HP Z400 Workstation.

  • New MacBook pro...Illustrator (CS3) won't open

I just bought a new MacBook pro. I connected the internal hard drive from my old mac to get the programs onto the new but I am having problems with Illustrator opening (CS3). It acts like it opens but the tools never pop up nor does the menu at the top. Suggestions?

  • Illustrator CS3 crashing when opening file

Whenever I open any AI file the file instantly closes before I can do anything to it.
It started when I was working on a project and tried to save it and it said "an unknown error has occured" and I'm pretty sure its because I had the Zune software open and Zune and AI don't get along
So I lost all of my work, but now I can't even open what I already had done because it crashes
I heard that fonts can cause this issue, I worked on my project on a Mac with different fonts then transfered it over to my PC and of course it couldn't find them so it just replaced them with a font that my PC knew
    could this relate to anything?
What can I do so that AI will be able to open my files? thank you!

    Jet,
Have you tried creating a new document and placing the troublesome file in it (ticking Paste Remembers Layers in the Layers flyout options)?
Otherwise, you may try to Move the folder or look at the Other options

  • Save a copy - Illustrator CS3

I have been fumbling around to create a script that will create a pdf file from an Illustrator CS3 file. I have the References for both Applescript and Javascript and am comfortable with the Save pdf options in either scripting format. But I would like the script to save the pdf while leaving the current document in Illustrator CS3 native format open for editing.
    Much appreciation for any suggestions.
    Thank You

    Thank You Tom,
I was only coming up with solutions that felt clumsy. I settled on 2 similar applescript approaches.
One works on an open document:
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
set openDoc to file path of current document as alias
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
set theFile to (openDoc as text)
set theFileCopy to text 1 thru -3 of theFile
do shell script "cp -pr " & quoted form of POSIX path of theFile & " " & quoted form of POSIX path of theFileCopy & "pdf"
set theCopy to theFileCopy & "pdf"
    end tell
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
    activate
    open theCopy as alias
save the current document as pdf with options {class:PDF save options ¬
    , compatibility:Acrobat 5 ¬
    , preserve editability:false, view pdf:true}
    close current document saving no
    end tell
The other works on a selected file in the finder:
    tell application "Finder"
    copy selection to theSelected
set theFile to (theSelected as text)
set theFileCopy to text 1 thru -3 of theFile
do shell script "cp -pr " & quoted form of POSIX path of theFile & " " & quoted form of POSIX path of theFileCopy & "pdf"
set theCopy to theFileCopy & "pdf"
    end tell
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
    activate
    open theCopy as alias
save the current document as pdf with options {class:PDF save options ¬
    , compatibility:Acrobat 5 ¬
    , preserve editability:false, view pdf:true}
    close current document saving no
    end tell
Both seem to get the job done. But they just don't feel very slick.
Any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated.
    Thank You
    Nick

  • Beginner Illustrator CS3  Set Trim size and Live area

Our graphic designer is on vacation I need to submit this image to print as poster...I have the image but I need help how to set Trim size to 45" width and 67" height. Visual live area set to 43"wd x 64" ht DPI 150 at 100% saved into PDF. Please help how to do this in Illustrator CS3?
    Thank you very much!

    > Trim size to 45" width and 67" height.
File > Document setup. Make that the document size.
    > Visual live area set to 43"wd x 64" ht.
Just keep all important info (text, logo) within that area. 1 inch margins left and right, 1.5 inch margins top and bottom.
    > DPI 150
That's PPI, for Pixels Per Inch, not DPI. That's the minimum resolution for imported artwork, like scans or Photoshop files.
    > saved into PDF
File > Save A Copy. Choose ADobe PDF as the format and then Press Quality as the preset in the following window after you click Save. Unless the printer provided more specific requirements, which I doubt.
