Illustrator CS3 won't retain/keep type style settings when pasting within same or different document

I'm working with Windows XP PentiumR 4 CPU 2.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM in Illustrator CS3. When pasting copy within same file (or pasting into new files) Illustrator won't consistently retain/keep the font's type style settings. Why?
Thank you!

Hi Sheri,
Are you facing this problem with any particular type of font?
I have tried copy paste with different font styles and it is retaining the style correctly.
Are you using XP SP2 or SP3?
Thanks

  • Illustrator CS3 won't open EPS.

    I have had a problem recently of large EPS files not opening in CS3 on my new work PC.
    The following error comes up when I try and open the file:
    "Can't open the Illustration. Could not complete the requested operation."
    When I click Okay, I'm greeted with either a completely blank page, or a page where some elements are missing - usually embedded images, which are presumably what's causing the problem.
    Before you ask, I've tried the following:
    Placing the unlinked EPS into a new document - no love.
    Placing the EPS in InDesign and exporting - I just get a blank, grey image and a file that won't open.
    Opening the EPS in Acrobat - again, no love.
    If I PLACE the file in a new document as a LINK, I get a preview image - it's when I try to embed it that it fails.
    Now, I'm not after a way to fix my file, because I know it's corrupted and probably can't be saved. What I would like to know is why it keeps happening and how can I stop it?
    I've noticed that it happens mainly when I place large image files into a document. I've also noticed, after some testing to try and find a fix, that if I save as an AI file, it opens fine, large images and all.
    This kinda doesn't help me, as I need to save EPS files so that the files can be opened in other applications. Unfortunately, not everybody has Illustrator.
    My computer is BRAND NEW and it can't simply be a memory issue because I have 8gb of RAM. Full specs are listed below.
    I would appreciate an answer to this as it is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially given it never used to happen on my OLD work PC, with the exact same version of Illustrator.
    PC Specs
    Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHZ
    8GB RAM
    64 bit OS
    Adobe Illustator CS3 (v.13)

    Sure it can. AI CS3 is a 32bit app and only uses 2.something GB of memory. Only CS6 is natively 64bit and can use more memory.
    You're right, Mylenium. It seems to be a compatibility issue.
    I changed Illustrator's compatibility under Properties to an earlier version of Windows, in this case Windows Vista, and it now works fine. Or at least for the moment.
    If any more problems arise I'll post them here, but the problems I listed in my previous post are no longer occuring.
    Thanks for your help.

    after installing OS X Yosemite software upgrade my Adobe Illustrator CS3 will not open with the ability to use the tools, only as a Read only file. I was told to install JavaForOSX2014-001 but that has not helped.

    Yes I am having the same exact issue.  CS6 works fine except for InDesign.  I have used the Java Legacy Updater with no help to the scenario.  Just bounces up/down and then gives me this nice little error message, which I get repeatedly:

  • PS cs3 and Illustrator cs3 won't shut down

    I have these apps intalled on two other win 7 x64 computers with
    out any problem but on this win 7 x64 system both ps cs3 and illustrator cs3  hang up when I try to close them. It is a little intermittent on illustrator and at least once it has closed properly but most of the time it takes about 2-5 mins to shut down or it won't shut down at all.
    Photoshop is worse and always either takes 3-5 mins if it does shut down but in most cases it will not shut down and I have to force quit the application. Any suggestions please.

    Security settings for the Adobe licensing service or something liek that, possibly Version Cue! Run as admin to diagnose, then manually configure the services...

  • Illustrator CS3 won't save ai files

    I have Illustrator CS3 on Windows Vista Home on Dell Inspiron 530/530s
    I have had this software for quite a while, but just recently it has stopped allowing me to save as an ai file. I can save in any other format just fine.
    I have searched the web on this and tried every fix I saw, none of which worked. The most recent file is tiny, no fonts, 2 color! I was able to take it into Corel and save it as an ai and open it in Illustrator, but it would not resave in illustrator.
    I have tried saving to desktop, checked print spooling was on auto (it was) etc. etc. I did buy 2 new HP printers recently. One is a laser P1515n, and the other a ink jet Photosmart C4680. Beyond that, nothing has changed.
    This is a huge issue for me, and is causing down time trying to find an answer while being unproductive. HELP!?!~

    That did not help

  • Illustrator CS3 Won't Work "Fatal Error - Missing Component", HELP!

    HELP!
    I have installed adobe illustrator CS3 and when i try to open it it comes up "Fatal Error - Missing Component" underneath stating: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS3/Client/3.0.0/VersionCue.framework. Is there anything i can do? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Looks like a permission problem where the folder or directory containing the framework my be not be avaiiable.
    I would go to Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers and run the Illustrator CS3 Uninstaller.
    Trash the preferences if they have not been removed and check the Application Support an Cache folders to certain there are no remnants of CS3 on system.
    Then reinstall. Do not install version cue with this new install.

  • Illustrator CS3 Won't Allow Text Fill Color Changes

    Hi All,
    I have a copy of Illustrator CS3 and this weekend I was working on a new logo design. For some reason, Illustrator would not accept changes to the text fill color. It was stuck on black. I am stuck after searching for solutions online and working with the Appearance panel.
    Has anyone else had this happen? Is there a fix?
    Thanks,
    Ansel

    Try changing the fill using the Appearance panel. With the Appearance panel you can stack fills and strokes, which often results in the text fill (available when text is highlighted) hidden behind a higher object.level fill.
    Tet filled while highlighted…
    Fill added using the Appearance panel. Note the fill is above the Characters line…
    Text selected, showing the Character level fill is still blue…

  • How do I keep my text formating when pasting from other InDesign files?

    I'm trying to post charts from one InDesign file to another.  The chart I'm trying to paste has hand-made fractions in them. The font is superscript and baseline shifted. When I paste it into a new document, the text loses all that formatting. It seems like a preferance thing, but I can't find it.

    Even if Placing an .indd file retains the formatting, it's a non-starter. The reason I needed to paste the formatted text in the first place was to create a variation of the ad for a different purpose, so I need to be able to edit the text - something you can't do with a placed file.
    For instance, I created an ad for an exhibit that includes the date of the reception and the address of the museum, etc. Then I want to create a poster for the wall of the exhibit, so I create a new document with different specs. Placing the ad copy would serve no use since I have to edit the copy (removing the address and reception date) and then readjust the emphasis of each line slightly.
    Then I created another new file (RGB, tall and skinny) for the email invite. So I needed to copy the ad copy  and again put emphasis in different places.
    I hope you can see that there is a real need to be able to copy and paste manually formatted text from one document to another while retaining the special formatting. In these kinds of jobs there is no need to create a new style for each line of text since each line is tweaked and tweaked to death.
    This copy & paste behavior is not intuitive and is obviously causing problems for users for no  reason whatsoever except that "Adobe knows best". Why can't Adobe trust that I knew what I was going when I applied the formatting in the first place?
    Considering how easy it it to remove formatting and revert to the original style, I would say the nod should be given to retaining formatting upon pasting. Both Word and Quark do this, so it's not anything unusual. Or give us the choice with a Paste Special dialog. But saying this behavior is "as designed" or suggesting you need to place a file or PDF, is not the solution.

  • Indesign CC 2014 - Dictionary keeps changing to USA when pasting

    When pasting from 1 Indesign document to another, even though all Indesign preferences, styles used, text boxes that I'm pasting to and from and all text - is UK English, as soon as I paste, it changes to USA.  Default is UK (when I create a new text box as well).

    If the copied text and the destination insertion point had styles with the same names but different language definitions that could happen. Because the language is applied to characters and styles it can be hard to get every character in the same language when you are cutting and pasting.
    I use this AppleScript on both the source and destination documents when there's an unwanted language mix causing problems:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CC 2014"
        set pstyles to all paragraph styles of active document
        repeat with i from 1 to number of items in pstyles
            try
                set applied language of item i of pstyles to "English: UK"
            end try
        end repeat
        set cstyles to all character styles of active document
        repeat with i from 1 to number of items in cstyles
            try
                set applied language of item i of cstyles to "English: UK"
            end try
        end repeat
        set applied language of every paragraph of every story of active document to "English: UK"
    end tell

  • Hi, got myself into a pickle Adobe Illustrator CS3 won't print

    it seems that when I go to print Ai simple keeps spinning until I get a message that Ai quit then the source page comes up and Ai shuts down.
    I successfully uninstalled Version CS3. Wanted to also take out Bridge CS3 but didn't... pulled it out to the desk top then replaced it back in applications. Which did nothing for Ai.
    Since I work primarily Ai and Photoshop (both CS3) I'm stuck. I did locate my startup disc's and I know how to open it "safe mode" I would like to re-install Ai CS3 ...(photoshop is working ok)  don't know if I first have to disable or uninstall Ai? and, I'm not sure if this is the right way to go.. Any help is greatly appreciated - awaiting your brilliance  Barb  (oh and I'm a girl - old but a girl)  haha

    Hi Barb,
    Try a simple Safe Boot first off...
    Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
    If that doesn't change anything...
    Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

    I just bought a new MacBook pro. I connected the internal hard drive from my old mac to get the programs onto the new but I am having problems with Illustrator opening (CS3). It acts like it opens but the tools never pop up nor does the menu at the top. Suggestions?

  • [JS - CS3]  Not able to add 'Superscript' style to a character within a string

    Hello fellow experts...
    I'm stuck with trying to change the style of a character from Normal to Superscript!
    b Situation:
    I have a string - 'myCourseTitle' - that has both CharacterStyles & ParagraphStyles applyed and could include the following character/Word:
    > '®' (Character)
    'OperateIT' (Word)
    b Requirements:
    I am wanting to add the style 'Superscript' to both the '®' characters and 'IT' from the words 'OperateIT', while keeping their initial CharacterStyles & ParagraphStyles!
    b My Starting Block:
    if (myCourseTitleField.editContents == ""){
    var myCourseTitle = "-no title has been defined-";
    }else{
    var myCourseTitle = myCourseTitleField.editContents;
    // The contents should now be checked for '®' characters and 'OperateIT'
    // And set to Superscript if found!
    if (myCourseTitle.indexOf("®") != 0){
    alert("Registered Trade Mark '®' found in Course Title at position:"+myCourseTitle.indexOf("®")+"\rThis will be set to 'Superscript' formatting", "WARNING '®' within Course Title",)
    I have tried many scripts, including the attached sample 'FindChangeByList.jsx' script - but to no avail!
    Can anyone help me - point me in the right direction to start looking?
    Thanks in advance
    Lee

    Hi Lee,
    In the example, you're trying to apply InDesign formatting to a JavaScript string (from an InDesign dialog box text field). That won't work, because the JavaScript string doesn't know anything about InDesign text objects.
    I'm assuming, however, that what you want is to change the formatting of the text on your page. To do that, you can use the findText method on the text, story, or document. Here's an example (the relevant part is the "mySnippet" function--the rest is just setting up an example):
    main();
    function main(){
    mySetup();
    mySnippet();
    function mySnippet(){
    //Clear find text preferences.
    app.findTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = "®";
    app.changeTextPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = app.documents.item(0).characterStyles.item("superscript");
    app.documents.item(0).changeText();
    //Reset find/change text preferences.
    app.findTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    //Reset find/change GREP preferences.
    app.findGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    //There's probably a way to do this in a single pass, but I'm short on time...
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "\\l(?<=)IT";
    app.changeGrepPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = app.documents.item(0).characterStyles.item("superscript");
    app.documents.item(0).changeGrep();
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "\\l";
    app.findGrepPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = app.documents.item(0).characterStyles.item("superscript");
    app.changeGrepPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = app.documents.item(0).characterStyles.item("[None]");
    app.changeGrepPreferences.position = Position.normal;
    app.documents.item(0).changeGrep();
    app.findGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    app.changeGrepPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing;
    //mySetup simply takes care of setting up the example document.
    function mySetup(){
    var myDocument = app.documents.add();
        var myPage = app.activeWindow.activePage;
    //Create a text frame on page 1.
    var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add();
    //Set the bounds of the text frame.
    myTextFrame.geometricBounds = myGetBounds(myDocument, myPage);
    //Fill the text frame with placeholder text.
    myTextFrame.contents = TextFrameContents.placeholderText;
    myTextFrame.insertionPoints.item(0).contents = "OperateIT®\r";
    myTextFrame.paragraphs.item(-1).insertionPoints.item(0).contents  = "OperateIT®\r";
    var myHeadingStyle = myDocument.paragraphStyles.add({name:"heading"});
    var mySuperscriptStyle = myDocument.characterStyles.add({name:"superscript", position:Position.superscript});
    function myGetBounds(myDocument, myPage){
    var myPageWidth = myDocument.documentPreferences.pageWidth;
    var myPageHeight = myDocument.documentPreferences.pageHeight
    if(myPage.side == PageSideOptions.leftHand){
      var myX2 = myPage.marginPreferences.left;
      var myX1 = myPage.marginPreferences.right;
    else{
      var myX1 = myPage.marginPreferences.left;
      var myX2 = myPage.marginPreferences.right;

    var myX2 = myPageWidth - myX2;

  • Illustrator CS5 won't stay open it shuts down when started?

    I have the CS5 creative suite and I bought it when it was first available. I have used it for several years with no major problems. In the past two days every time I start up my Illustrator program it goes through all the start up proceedures and as soon as it has come up it shuts the program down. I am on a MAC and I am experienced with the computer.

    Hi again,
    OK, I added a new user account and Illustrator opened just fine in the new account. Can you tell me why and what I will have to do in the original account to get Illustrator to work again?
