Illustrator CS4 - 20+ second lag when tabbing back

Hi, all -
New-built machine, quad-core, 6 gig RAM, EAH5870 GPU, 2 Samsung (to be replaced) monitors and 2 1T drives, Windows 7; CS4 Master Suite.
The problem is tabbing or clicking back to Illustrator from any program, though most notably from PS, the program just hangs for a bit before resuming. This lag can be upward of 30 seconds sometimes, though normally around 20ish.  The files I've been working on have ave been very small, nothing that should be taxing at all.
Working on the same files at work on a much lesser-spec machine produces nothing similar.  I've been through the normal troubleshooting path: Drivers, calibration, performance settings, etc. and have found nothing that to remedy this.
Anyone have any idea why this would be?
Thanks for any help resolving this.

Check your energy saving and performance settings and the system swap file config. Sounds like it is hibernating memory pages too much. You may also require a specific update/ patch that is not installed automatically by Windows Update...

  • Illustrator CS4 crops my artwork when exporting to png

Illustrator CS4 crops my artwork when exporting to png (it always crops on the right side). It doesn't happen everytime but often enough to be annoying. Sometimes centering my artwork in the artboard solves the problem but not always. Do you have any idea why it's happening, and what I can do to avoid that problem?
    (See the attached png)

@Jacob & Mylenium: I don't have any stroked path in my artwork. I've tried to add a no fill/no stroke rectangle (same size as my artwork and then a bit bigger) but it didn't work.
Your advices gave me an idea though: I've added a filled rectangle slightly bigger than my artwork, centered it and dropped its opacity to 0%, it worked.
I'm glad I know that trick now, because even when my artwork wasn't badly cropped, it was touching the edges of the picture (png). Then I had to open it in Photoshop and increase the canvas size in order to leave some transparent space between the artwork and the edges of the picture. Now I can do that in Illustrator
Thanks a lot for your help !

  • Trouble getting Illustrator CS4 to run, and when it does: no workspaces

At work (University of St Andrews) I have Adobe CS4 Web Premium and everything installs and runs okay apart from Illustrator CS4.
I've tried to install it on two different PCs, both Dell Precision workstations. One had Windows XP Professional 32-bit, the new one has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I get exactly the same behaviour on both. I've even tried to install it on Windows 7's XP Mode and I get the same error messages!
    INSTALLATION #1
When I installed it I got an error saying "Done, with errors". Details showed:
    Error
    Adobe Illustrator CS4 LangPack (en_GB)
    Error:
    Error 2
When I then tried to run the application it just wouldn't start, it would throw up an error message. It simply would not start.
    INSTALLATION #2
So I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and got the same error.
    COPY FILES - NO WORKSPACES
I then read this advice on a forum:
"Do you have a working install of Ai CS4 on another computer anywhere?
    If so, go into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator\Support\Required
and copy the Resources file to the same location on the computer that
encounters the error. I was having the same problem, but luckily I had a
working install on another OS, so I just compared the files between the
two installations and found the missing ones."
So I copied over these files from a working copy elsewhere in the department and this time the application ran but I now have no WorkSpace settings and cannot save any either.
    INSTALLATION #3
I then uninstalled again and tried to reinstall. This time on the installer I was given a number of language options. Rather than English (International) I selected English (US) and lo! and behold! the installer ran without errors and the application opened ok and this time I had WorkSpaces... the only problem was that it would only run in trial mode because it wouldn't accept my serial number, which I'm guessing is for English (International) only.
    INSTALLATION #4
Uninstall, again. Reinstall, again, this time in English (International).
Now the application opens but again I have no WorkSpaces, and cannot save any workspaces.
What can I do? Any idea how can I get a fully working version of Illustrator CS4 on my PC that includes workspaces?
    Thank you
    Gareth

    Hi Carey,
Thanks for your post. I have followed your instructions and here are my replies:
Are you having any issues with your other Adobe products, or is it just Illustrator?
If just Illustrator, did you previously install the product separately (i.e. as a trial, or as a pre-release/beta)?
I am having problems only with Illustrator CS4. I have not installed the product separately, either as a trial or a pre-release or beta.
In fact, I installed Adobe CS4 Web Premium on a clean, newly installed, straight-from-the-Dell-factory Dell Precision T7400. It was the first application I installed, and Illustrator wasn't working straight after the installation.
I've not had any problems with other Adobe applications. The only time the serial number became an issue was when I tried to reinstall Illustrator CS4 using "English (US)" as an option, simply out of curiosity as this hadn't been an option with the original installation of the whole suite.
    I followed the instructions:
    Deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4.
Updated permissions for Public Documents (although when I reached step 12: "Click Apply and click Permissions tab." there was no Permissions tab).
Reinstalled Illustrator CS4 from the setup.exe file. You said uncheck everything else, however the following applications would not allow me to untick them:
    Adobe Bridge CS4
    Adobe Extension Manager CS4
    Supporting Components:
              Adobe CMaps CS4
              Adobe CSI CS4
              Adobe CSI CS4 x64
Adobe Color EU Recommended Settings CS4
Adobe Color JA Extra Settings CS4
Adobe Color NA Extra Settings CS4
              Adobe Default Language CS4
              Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit CS4
              Adobe Fonts All CS4
              Adobe Adobe Linguistics CS4
              Adobe Output Module
              Adobe PDF Library Files CS4
              Adobe Search for Help
              Adobe Service Manager Extension
              Adobe Type Support CS4
              Adobe Update Manager CS4
              Adobe WinSoft Linguistics PLugin x64
              Adobe XMP Panels CS4

              AdobeColorCommonSetRGB
              Connect
              PDF Settings CS4
              Photoshop Camera Raw _x64
              kuler
The installer ran, and I got exactly the same error as before:
    Error
    Adobe Illustrator CS4 LangPack (en_GB)
    Error:
    Error 2
Now when I try to run Illustrator CS4 I get a dialog box saying:
    Error
The localized resource files for this application could not be loaded. Please reinstall or repair the application and try again.
This is the ninth time I've tried to reinstall it.
I'll try to send you a direct message with the serial number and take it from there.
    Thanks

  • Illustrator CS4 [cant] error message when opening

    Hi all,
I've just installed Illustrator CS4 twice and still get this error. i'm running it on a Dell 745 with Windows XP SP3.
When I open Illustrator I get the following error message
"adobe illustrator cs4 operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [cant]"
tried to google it but can't see anyone else having the same problem.
    any ideas?
    Cheers

Well, it hangs on Updating font menu, according to the splash screen. Ergo, the most likely reason is, that you have a "bad" font on your system. Remove it and AI should launch. And before you ask: Yes, remove all fonts that are not system fonts. You can add them back step by step later to find out which one exactly caused the problem.

  • Illustrator CS4 and CS3 freeze when saving a PDF as an AI file

I'm trying to pull apart a couple of PDFs into layers to import them into After Effects. I do this all the time and it's a pretty standard thing which I haven't had any trouble with before, but for the last couple of days whenever I try to save the PDF as an AI file, the damn thing freezes - I get the washing machine of death (I'm on Vista), the program goes greyed out and I have to restart it, losing all the changes. I've tried the following, none of which seem to make any difference:
    - Saving to a different drive (C as opposed to an external USB drive)
    - Trying to open the PDFs in CS3 rather than CS4
    - Trying a couple of different PDFs
I can't reinstall Illustrator as I'm not at the office until the new year and don't have the disks. The PDFs are small (300k or so) and so it shouldn't be their size making the machine hang, surely? I've attached a sample. Specs are - dual core Dell M6300 laptop, 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, Quadro 1600 graphics.
Any ideas would be very gratefully received....

Sorry I haven't replied in a few days (I'm at my parents' house for Christmas, so not the ideal place to sort out Illustrator problems )
This is REALLY weird. I was wondering whether Illustrator would be able to save PDFs (which are after all basically the same thing as AI files for this purpose) to get around the problem that way. I tried: it saved the thing fine. Next I tried saving what I'd just saved as a PDF, as an AI file. It saved it in a flash without any problems. (This is with the trashed prefs file - I haven't tried reinstating it, yet.) I've just loaded up a 14Mb AI file, and saved it again without trouble.
There's only one thing I can think of that has been changed since the last time I tried this, when Illustrator wasn't working. This is something which was definitely affecting Word 2007: I've deleted a couple of network printers that were on nonexistent IP addresses. (Word wouldn't load anything, even the most basic of docs - it just froze; washing machine of death, grey screen, etc.) The default printer is thus now a Canon USB thing, which isn't plugged in either, but which Windows seems happy to carry on without. Word seemed unable to continue with the network printers installed, as presumably it was trying to contact them and failing. Could Illustrator have been falling into the same trap??
Anyway, whatever the problem, it seems to be working OK now. Thanks both and hope you have a merry Christmas and New Year period.
    Best

  • Illustrator CS6 Rasterizes Drop Shadows When Saving Back to CS

I am working with Illustrator CS6 and when I save a file to an earlier version - CS3 or CS - that has a drop shadow effect, the effect gets rasterized. Drop shadows are not new to this latest version of Illustrator so shouldn't they still be editable when saving to a version above CS?
    Thank you.

Actually Gaussian Blur was indeed updated in CS6 to be much faster. All drop shadows use Gaussian Blur, as do outer glows and inner glows. If you need live drop shadows and glows in CS5, then apply them in CS5.

  • Illustrator CS4 keeps quitting unexpectedly!!

    Hello geniuses!!
    We need your help!!
We're graphic designers and our Illustrator CS4 keeps quitting unexpectedly when:
    > We try to go to print from Illustrator
    > Working on files over approx. 600MB
(Also, it's taking about 5mins to open a 667MB Illustrator file!! I feel like it didn't take that long on my old eMac)
Ever since we got new computers last November 2012 this has been happening (as well as permissions problems). Our computers were bought second hand but were still in their boxes. We loaded our own CS4 and had a lot of problems initially getting CS4 to run properly on this operating system.
Computer 1 (we're working on the file on this computer):
    iMac 20 inch
    OSX 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion)
Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 3GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics:  ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB
    Software:  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
+ (we've got a '20-inch DVI (1680 x 1050)' screen hooked up to this one, acting as a moniter only)
Computer 2 (the other computer, networked):
    iMac 24 inch
    OSX 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion)

    Computer 1 is quitting unexpectedly often;
Computer 2 is also quitting but not as often.
    Help!!
Is there a phone number to ring for this kind of specific problem?? or do you think we'd just end up on hold for a million years.
Thx for any advice you can offer!

I would say RAM may be a big issue here. Mountain Lion is rather RAM hungry and to run Adobe CS requires even more grunt. I have my main Mac at 16GB Ram and the others on 8GB and CS$ (and CS^ - I just prefer 4) run extremely fast even with extremely large files.
    Hope this helps.

  • 1 second lag

anyone else experience a one second lag when opening up the text message screen? if i close down with in a text conversation, when it opens back up it lags on a white screen for about a second? not a big deal but kind of annoying and it didnt do it when i first bought the phone.

Happens a lot. Phone has a lag while typing also. (Including this message!) Fairly annoying if you ask me.

  • App crashing when going back to previous view

I've got my app. which has several views. in my 3rd view, i have a list of questions with yes/no answers the answers to which I'm saving to a plist. it was working all good. but then i added a first view with a table which has 4 options, clicking on either of these rows go to the same view but each of them change the value of the variable in my singleton class, which then decides which questions are added to the 3rd view. so this helps me to jus have one view but the variable controls the different questions. Now my problem is that if i change something in my 3rd view, for eg, i choose yes/no , then when i am going back to the main viw , my app crashes. I am not sure why this happens. How does it work anyway-the inherent back button on the navigation bar? im guessing it calls the viewdidload function for the first/second view when going back to them from the first view, i dont undrstand why it crashes, coz the viewdidloads of these views seem okay to me.
    thanks

write the piece of code causing the crash or paste the output on the console to get to know what actually cause your application to be crashed.

  • Broken Illustrator CS4 "Open With" File Association

I want to open an SVG file, using Illustrator CS4. (I have the Design Premium Suite.) I cannot get it to open from Windows Explorer in CS4. Double-clicking the file opens it in CS3. Here's what I do and what happens:
    1. Right-click on the SVG file in Windows Explorer.
    2. Choose "Open With." A menu of programs pops up. Illustrator CS4 is not in the list, but CS3 is.
    3. So I click on "Choose Program" to find CS4. The "Open With" window opens.
    4. "Adobe Illustrator CS4" is not in the "Recommended Programs" list, but it is in the "Other Programs" list. However, I note that its listing has a generic icon, instead of the "Ai" CS4 icon.
    5. I click on "Adobe Illustrator CS4" expecting the program to load. Instead, an error message pops up: "<filepath and filename.svg> is not a valid Win32 application."
    So I started over:
    1-4. Same as above.
    5. Click on "Browse" to find the Illustrator.exe program file directly. I did this twice:
         a. First with the "Adobe Illustrator CS4" shortcut at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Adobe Illustrator CS4.lnk". This takes me back to the "Open With" window, with the bad "Adobe Illustrator CS4" listing highlighted.
         b. Then with the actual program at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe". This takes me back to the "Open With" window with "Adobe Illustrator CS3" highlighted.
What can I do to fix this?
    Additional notes:
    1. I was able to use "Open With" to specify several browsers to open the SVG file. So the problem seems to relate specifically to the links to Illustrator CS4, rather than any overall "Open With" functionality.
    2. Right-clicking on an EPS file, and choosing "Open With," behaves exactly as right-clicking on an SVG file.
    3. Right-clicking an AI file show two instances of "Adobe Illustrator CS3"-- one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. Clicking on each entry opens the correct program for the icon, however.
How do I also fix this?
    Mike
Message was edited by: Mike Wickham

First an update: I compared registry entries with the CS4 installation on my laptop. I saw that quite a few of the Adobe.Illustrator.<etc>  keys were
missing, and many of the ones that were there had CS3 paths listed instead of CS4. So I uninstalled Illustrator CS4 and reinstalled it. That fixed some
problems. I also, in Windows Explorer, used Tools> Folder Options> File Types to change Illustrator CS4 to the default program to open AI, EPS, and
SVG files. I chose "Advanced" and "Edit" in the File Type dialog and noticed that some of the entries for open were missing the "Open" action. So I fixed that.
I've got the AI, EPS, and SVG files where I can open them with the correct programs now, but there are still some weirdities using right-click and Open With:
    For AI files:
There are two instances of Adobe Illustrator CS3 listed. One has a CS3 icon. The other has the CS4 icon. The AI file opens with the program
associated with the icon. If I choose Open With, then "Other Programs, there is a listing for Adobe Illustrator CS4, but it has a generic window icon and does not work. I get the "<path><filename>.ai is not a valid Win32 application" error.
    For EPS files:
There are also two entries for Adobe Illustrator CS3, again one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. Again they both open the program that matches the icon. There is also an Adobe Illustrator CS4 listed, but it has the shortcut icon for CS4 (the one with the arrow). It opens CS4. If I choose
Other Programs, the non-working, generic icon Adobe Illustrator CS4 is also listed.
    For SVG files:
There are also two Adobe Illustrator CS3 listings, one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. There is also an Adobe Illustrator CS4 listed, but with the shortcut version of the icon. They all open the program associated with the icon shown. If I choose Other Programs, the listings and icons under "Recommended Programs" are correct for both CS3 and CS4, plus there is a CS4 listing with the generic icon.
Is there any way to fix this stuff without uninstalling/reinstalling the whole Design Premium suite? While the reinstall of Illustrator CS4 did fix
some things, it also broke some. It reinstalled a bunch of ancillary programs, like ExtendScript that I didn't tell it to reinstall. I ran Adobe
update and now ExtendScript and and Adobe Drives service update fail to update. I ran the update from Acrobat. Looking in Illustrator, the update
button is grayed out and completely unavailable.

  • Illustrator CS4 crash. FM Core?

My Illustrator CS4 unexpectedly quit and when I restarted it, a dialog box appeared reading "FM Core has been stopped. Please start it from the system preferences pane and then relaunch Adobe Illustrator CS4". I have no clue what this means and couldn't find it in the system preferences. So I'm stumped. Everytime I restart Ilustrator it gives me the dialog box. Can anyone tell me how to start the FMCore and where to actually find it?
    Thanks

Thanks Larry. I went to the Systems Preferences, but at the time, the
dialog box didn't  read that it would have anything to do with
Suitcase Fusion. After I went to Suitcase in the Preferences, I was
able to start up the FMCore again. Thanks so much! That sure made my
    day.

  • Repeated Delays when Alt-Tabbing Back to Premiere Pro CS4

I'm experiencing a lengthy delay every time I switch away from Premiere Pro CS4 to another app and then switch back. Every time I Alt-tab back I get the hourglass cursor for 35 sec. Then, it goes through a generating peak file phase for each of the clips in the project. This goes more quickly, maybe 5-15 sec. But it does this EVERY SINGLE TIME I return to PP from another app.
This is on a newly built Windows XP 64 system based on the brand new Core i7 940 with 12 GB of RAM and four 500 GB+ hard disks. I've set the two media caches to each be on different disks. The system disk is a third disk and the project is on the fourth disk. There's no way this system should be slow with this material. The project is a lynda.com beginner's tutorial; we're talking half a dozen 15-second sequences.
How can I stop PP from going through this lengthy delay each and every time I switch back to it?

  • Illustrator CS4 window broken when using expose

it happens when i do the following
Create or open an .ai file, than create or open another .ai file and hit expose.  Everything is fine. Than i click on the tab for the first .ai file, hit expose
and illustrator is broken into pieces. When i click on the tab for the second .ai hit expose and everything is fine. This is happening not only in illustrator but also in Photoshop and other adobe cs4 apps.
So when you have multiple files open in illustrator and working with the file in the first tab, illustrator is broken everytime i use expose.
i attach also a screen shot so you can see how it looks like.

It's an issue with Apple's code for Expose and Spaces... applications have nothing to do with those features and aren't even aware they exist. You need to bring this up with Apple if it bothers you that much.

Now when I play a movie that is in my library, the movie plays for aprx. 60 seconds and then reverts back to my Itunes library. Does it with all movies in the library, Most where downloaded from Itunes. Any ideas on a cure?

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
