Illustrator CS4 can´t sometimes use some fonts

Hello I have a strange issue with illustrator CS4 under Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Design Premium, which is driving me really crazy. If I am trying to write some text using for example Titilium Font, Olijo or some other ttf and otf fonts, I can see them in font selection, but whe I change to them Illustrator automaticaly switch to Myriad Pro. Few minutes ago I have sucesfully written a text with Olijo font then I restarted computer and Illustrator refused to use the font next time. I do not know what is causing it because other programs Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash can use them font without any problems. This issue is happening randomly with random fonts only in Illustrator. It also happened once with Myriad Pro font Family. Anyone knows how can I solve this?
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and my custom fonts (bought and downloaded) are in the folder C:\Fonts, system fonts are in the folder C:\Windows\Fonts. For font managing I am using Bitstream Font Navigator.

    Hi drewacg,
I'm sorry that you ran into trouble with this.  Are you the administrative contact on your Creative Cloud team subscription?  The admin user doesn't receive the same set of services as a full seat, so you will have a Typekit Trial plan instead of the Portfolio plan.
You have the option of upgrading to the Portfolio level, though. If you would like to do that:
    1) sign in at https://typekit.com/login with your Adobe ID and password
    2) visit typekit.com/plans, and select the "upgrade" option underneath Portfolio
Your Typekit plan upgrade will be billed separately from your Creative Cloud payments. The Portfolio plan is $49.99/year.
I hope that this helps!  If you have any questions, please feel free to send your Adobe ID information to [email protected] and we can look into it further for you. Best,

Why can't I use Vietnamese fonts with Adobe Elements 10

    Hi Barbara,
I get symbols a box with an X in it or a asterisk  * and yes they are in my font folder, so I went in to Microsoft Word typed a word in, copy it and then bought up Photo Elements and the picture I wanted an pasted the words in, it works.

  • Can't find text in distilled file, using some fonts

The products I have are Mac OS 10.6.8, Acrobat X and 9, and Word 2011 and Apple Pages for Mac; Acrobat 9 and Word 2007 for Windows XP.
There are numerous ways to create PDFs on both platforms, whether through save as or creating a PostScript file and distilling it. The problem is that with docs I have using Calibri, Cambria, and Candara, if I distill a PostScript file made from Mac Word or Pages, neither Acrobat nor Apple Preview can find text in the resulting PDF, whether the file distilled with Mac or Windows Distiller. (Meaning a "find" for a string comes up as not found.)  All other combinations are okay, even writing a PS file in Windows Word and distilling with Mac Distiller.
I mention the fonts specifically because most of the time I use OTF faces, which always work. I even tried using the Windows TTF versions in the Mac operating system -- same failure.
And even if I force these fonts to be embedded in the Distiller job options, still no joy. If I take so much as a comma and set it to an OTF, I can find the comma. Also, Acrobat *can* find Arial text in a Visio flowchart placed in the Word doc. I don't know how the author placed it there, but it's probably copy from Visio, paste into Word.
The reason why I care about this is because the distilled PFDs are just a tiny bit better looking on the screen than other options, such as "Save as PDF" from the Mac OS Print dialogue. The only other one that looks as good is the Create PDF button in Windows Word, but I would rather not have to use Windows just to get a better-looking PDF.
    So to summarize:
Mac app > write PS file > Mac Distiller = fail
Mac app > write PS file > Win Distiller  = fail
Win app > write PS file > Mac Distiller  = okay
Win app > write PS file > Win Distiller  = okay
Mac app > save as PDF directly > okay
This might not be a problem with Distiller per se; it could be the Mac OS engine that creates the PS files. You see, I had heard that Apple used their own internally developed engine for the options to save PDF files directly, but was using Adobe code when one used the option to write a PostScript file, so that's why I'm so surprised and disappointed it fails.

Hmmm. In what way are Distilled PDFs "a tiny bit better looking on screen" than those made by OS X?
You are viewing both in the same app and platform?
And you're referring to font display?
What settings are you using in Distiller which you think might have some bearing on this?

OS X's native graphics drawing environment, Quartz, is essentially a "Display PDF", so creating a PDF file is a very simple procedure.
Writing PostScript for printing uses Apple's own cgpdftops CUPS filter. I doubt there is any "Adobe code" as such, and I dispute the implication that "Apple code == bad; Adobe code == good", which you seem to suggest.
The specifications for PDF and PostScript are clearly documented, and it should be easy for anyone to follow them.
However, the fact remains that when Apple converts these MS fonts to PS, something goes wrong. It may be a bug in Apple's code; or it may be that Apple it strictly interpreting font data which MS is playing fast and loose with. Windows' own PS export would no doubt be designed to work with the looser implementation in MS's fonts. This is just hypothetical of course, though is in keeping with tradition.
What you could do is use a decent text editor like TextWrangler (free from BareBones software) to compare the PostScript code from Windows and OS X.
You could also look a the Properties tab in Acrobat of the PDFs, and compare the font encoding.
You could also test running out PostScript from any other app on OS X that you have using those fonts.
However, I think it is unlikely that you will see resolution unless MS releases a new version of their fonts, or some new version of OS X makes an amendment to fix the bug or cater for the MS issue. Perhaps Lion will do this; perhaps it won't.
Are you using the versions of these fonts that came with Office 2011 for Mac? What happens if you use the Windows versions of the fonts on OS X?

  • Why am I unable to use some fonts in Pages '09 since upgrading to Pages 5?

I upgraded to the new Pages and regretted it immediately because it doesn't have a lot of features I am used to and which I need. (The marketing blurb only mentioned what it could do, and omitted to mention how many functions had been removed, otherwise I wouldn't have upgraded.) As a result I decided I wouldn't use Pages 5 until it (hopefully) catches up with the functionality of the older version.
However, the upgrade appears to have done something to corrupt some of my fonts in Pages '09. This means that files I created in Pages '09 cannot now be printed because I get 'gobbledegook' instead of the font I chose (Academy Engraved for one).
I can set a new document in Pages 5 in Academy Engraved but if I then export it into Pages '09 it reverts to gobbledegook. I cannot simply replicate my old Pages '09 files in Pages 5 because the functionality I need isn't there. So I have a lot of files in Pages '09 that I can't print, and I am very frustrated.
I have validated the Academy Engraved font in Font Book and it was fine. Can anyone suggest anything else I can try please?
    Many thanks.

Thank you for that, but I'm afraid I muddied the waters by mentioning that alert. I am aware of Gatekeeper, but the point was it was a Pages document not an app so I shouldn't have got that message at all. If anything, I should have got the "You need a newer version of Pages" message. However, I'll live with that one for the time being.
It's the font problem that I'm really concerned with. If I open a new document in Pages '09 I can no longer use Academy Engraved font, it just looks like gobbledegook. Neither can I read Academy Engraved font in any of my old Pages '09 documents. However, Academy Engraved font works fine in Pages 5. So by upgrading needlessly to Pages 5 I can no longer use Academy Engraved in Pages '09. That's my main problem.

  • Illustrator CS4 window broken when using expose

it happens when i do the following
Create or open an .ai file, than create or open another .ai file and hit expose.  Everything is fine. Than i click on the tab for the first .ai file, hit expose
and illustrator is broken into pieces. When i click on the tab for the second .ai hit expose and everything is fine. This is happening not only in illustrator but also in Photoshop and other adobe cs4 apps.
So when you have multiple files open in illustrator and working with the file in the first tab, illustrator is broken everytime i use expose.
i attach also a screen shot so you can see how it looks like.

It's an issue with Apple's code for Expose and Spaces... applications have nothing to do with those features and aren't even aware they exist. You need to bring this up with Apple if it bothers you that much.

  • Solved my Illustrator CS4 (Can not save file) issue (same as with Illustrator CS3)

Using Illustrator CS4, if the OS default printer is turned off, Illustrator will crash when saving the file to a name/format other than what it was opened as. I tested this and it's true, the bug exists in Illustrator CS4 (and was referenced in a ticket in this knowledge base on the CS3 product).
You'd think ADOBE would figure out how to DOCUMENT this feature!!
Set your default printer to ADOBE.PDF and all will be fine!

You do have to have a default printer how you were able to run Illustrator is a mystery unless they change this behavior in CS 3 which I was not aware of but perhaps it is something I forgot.
But I for one am glad you discovered the cause and cure and that you posted it, I don't have the problem but thank you.

  • Can my imac use some pc conventions?

i switched to mac a year ago.  i use a pc at work.  i have trouble going back and forth between the 2 machines.  i would like some mac features to look/act like the pc so that i can use some of my habitual movements without "stuttering".
for example:  i would like to move the red, yellow and green (close, minimize and maximize) buttons in the upper left corner to the upper right corner where they are in the pc.  i would like to have both a delete key and a backspace key.  is there any "act like a pc" helper?  no, i don't want my mac to be a pc, only to give me an effortless translation.
    thank you

A Mac can read PC formatted volumes. What happened, exactly, when you plugged in the USB drive?
Perhaps the photos were not exported in a format the Mac can read. Use whatever program the PC uses to read photographs and export them as jpeg or other format.

  • Why can't i use special fonts in preloader

    hi,
im having trouble with embedding a specific font in my
    preloader.
flash only lets me use device fonts (arial, courier etc.), if
i try to embed the characters, it wont show anything at all in the
    loader.
    1) html
    2) source
    fla
    thanks for any replies guys!

In your .fla, you have the dynamic text object in frame 1 of
    the first
layer. In the second frame, you have an blank keyframe and
    the
actionscript to control the dynamic text.
Move that keyframe with the actionscript to a new layer on
    frame 1, you
    should get much better results.

  • Illustrator CS4 can't open the illustration?

I tried to open an Illustrator CS4 file that was saved successfully a couple days ago and it popped up with this:
    http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj59/wutupjoey/untitled.jpg
    Please help!

    Joey,
It seems the file has been corrupted.
You may try creating a new document and placing the file in it (having ticked Paste remembers Layers in the Layers panel flyout) and see how much may be saved that way.
And/or you may start reading here and here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50031.html
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50032.html
You may be able to assess the amount of damage by the file size before and after.
Edit: What about backup? Rereading, I realized the answer.

  • Why can I not use Dina-font as a Xft font?(SOLVED)

If I use the following code with i.e. dzen2: -*-dina-medium-r-*-*-15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 everything works fine. The problem is that I want to use it in awesome's statusbar, but ASFAIK it only uses Xft fonts.
Dina fonts are stored in *.bdf.pcf.gz files and as I understand it these font types should be usable in Xft oriented apps. Or what?
    Any hints/help are appreciated.

IT works fine for me, this is what I have in my .Xdefaults:
    urxvt*font: xft:Dina:size=10
These are the font files I have on my system:
    $ ls -l /usr/share/fonts/local/Dina*
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 24K 2008-02-08 00:54 /usr/share/fonts/local/DinaBold10.pcf

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23K 2008-02-08 00:54 /usr/share/fonts/local/DinaItalic9.pcf

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23K 2008-02-08 00:54 /usr/share/fonts/local/DinaMedium9.pcf
Maye sure that you have correct font paths in your xorg.conf, and mayre fun mkfontdir/mkfontscale on the directory where you have installed the font.
EDIT: I don't use awesome anymore, but "Dina-10" worked just fine in awesomerc (if I remember correctly).

  • Can't seem to use some fonts in LIbrary AND System Folders

Hi. I installed some new PostScript fonts in my Library/Fonts folder, but neither Adobe InCopy nor MS Word show them in their Font menus. How can I get these fonts to show up (in this case, many versions of Franklin Gothic)?
I also note I have MANY fonts in my System/Fonts folder. My impression is some are usable in Word and some are not. Apple Help says nothing about this folder; I imagine I put them there when I got the new machine. Should I move them all or partially to the Library? If so, what the heck is this System/Fonts folder for?

Hi, and welcome (back) to Apple Discussions.
I believe the System/Fonts folder is the folder for fonts used by the system itself. If I am correct, you could create major problems by moving those fonts anywhere.
If you like, you can download DeLocalizer which will allow you to remove foreign fonts and languages you don't need. That will clear out some of those fonts in the System/Fonts folder.
This doesn't solve your problem with the new PostScript fonts not showing up in your applications, but it does explain your other question. Since I've never really used 10.2, I can't address the problem of the fonts being absent without leave. 10.3 has Font Book for adding fonts, which I believe did not exist in 10.2.

  • CS4 installed everything except Illustrator CS4, can someone help?

I purchased the Education Edition of CS4 Design Premium a couple of weeks ago and was able to install everything except Illustrator. I'm on an iMac, that's a little over a year old, running on OS X 10.5.8.
Here's the steps I took and what I encountered when I got everything else installed. I mounted the Installer that I downloaded from Adobe, double clicked on the Setup file, checked all, clicked Install. I got a number of Installation Error messages, but I just clicked Continue each time and it seemed to install everything properly!
    Everything except Illustrator.
Now when I relaunch the Installer, it shows me all the programs that are installed and the ones that are remaining, which are Illustrator and Version Cue. Since I don't need Version Cue, I check Illustrator and click Install and then it freezes on the Preparing to Install.
I used to have Illustrator CS2 working on my machine, but I deleted it prior to installing CS4. I've also deleted the old CS2 Plug-Ins Folder and Preferences file from my User Library, and still no luck.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the response. I did what you suggested and uninstalled everything, ran the clean script and tried again. Unfortunately, the same thing happened. When I received the errors, I just clicked continue each time and everything installed except Illustrator. When I clicked the More Information button, is says "Adobe Color EU Extra Settings CS4, Error:, Error 2" and Adobe Color JA Extra Settings CS4, Error:, Error 2."
I have a case opened with Adobe, but they are very backed up with tech support issues. Any other suggestions would be a big help, thanks!
P.S. Perhaps I should mention that I did have some "borrowed" CS2 versions of the software on my computer prior to finally purchasing CS4. I removed all supporting CS2 files that I could find by moving them to the trash and emptying. I hoping though that that's not the reason why this is happening!
