Illustrator cs4 preferences file corrupt message

I use Illustrator cs4 for windows and after I restart my computer when I open Illustrator cs4 a box pops open telling me that the preferences file is corrupt and it is using the default settings. This only happens when I restart my computer. If I don't restart my computer I can open and close the program over and over with no problem. Could there be some program conflicting with Illustrator?

I did a clean install before installing CS4 and the AI prefs issue
still occurred. CS4 is basically the only thing I have installed and
this happens. It's very weird.
This happens to me on two separate machines.
I've ran the file compare utility and you look at the differences in
the text and neither of them really make sense to me. How does it even
know the preferences are corrupt?
This is a very frustrating situation as I can never enjoy the Recent
Files List, and that every now and then when I want to change up my
preferences I have to go through a process of unlocking (read:
disabling Read Only) and backing up the file, opening AI changing
prefs, etc, and relocking. The only way to keep from getting the
corrupt prefs is to mark the prefs file as Read Only, but it totally
disables recent file lists and gives the hassle I just described.
What's odd is that the "working" prefs file can get corrupted when I
try to change preferences. I'll back it up first to be careful, then
unlock the one in AI, open AI, change a pref, close it and lock it,
and next thing I know it's corrupt again. So then I'll try putting the
backed up locked prefs file that was working and it will be corrupt
too. That may not make sense as I've described you, but I assure you I
understand it completely. Something is definitely wonky!
It's funny because I see a lot of suggestions to some people's issues
that say "you might have corrupt prefs, try moving the folder/deleting
it". Our issue IS the corrupt prefs!

Try installing from the Offline Installer. It may be a temporary folder permissions error, so this may fix it. Here is a link to try to download from:

  • Illustrator CS4 .pdf files - two issues

Issue 1: In Bridge I cannot open an .ai or .pdf file in Illustrator by clicking a thumbnail. Is 'drag and drop' into Illustator from Bridge the sole method? (apart from not using Bridge).
Issue 2: After exporting an .ai file to .pdf (Acrobat Pro CS4) a 'File Association' alert is shown. In previous versions of Illustrator the newly created .pdf file would open up in Acrobat for review/email forwarding etc when the 'preview in Acrobat' was selected... I am confused about the correct settings in the File Associations Panel in Bridge (Edit/Preferences/File Handling) under Illustrator it shows Illustrator and in the drop down InDesign and two other programmes I do not use. If someone can advise me how to add Acrobat to that drop-down I would be most grateful.

Don't think it could be corrupt preferences. I've tried trashing the prefs as well as reinstalling CS4.
I've noticed that it has something to do with an object that has a stroke. If I create a new box without a stroke then then my initial measurements are correct. However if I add a stroke my measures change according to the stroke weight. I've looked for ways to turn this off, but can not seem to find anything. I think this problem has something to do with the over all appearance of things.
Which lead me to another issues I'm having.... What happened to the "Filter" menu? When I try to round corners on a rectangle it applies the round corners as an effect "appearance". I have to expand the appearance in order to the corners to actually be rounded. Why did this change? I want to change the actual object the first time I create it and not take extra steps. This can waste a lot of time. I think this same issue is what is going on with the stroke weight. I don't want my object size to increase when I increase my stroke weight. If I did want this, I would create outlines. Can this be turned off? If not, I will have to continue using CS3 until Adobe fixes this problem.

  • Illustrator CS4 mac file won't open on a PC

    Hi,
I'm trying to open a .AI file made on Illustrator CS4 for Mac on a PC at home and it won't open. Do the two versions talk to each other or I'm just losing my time? On my PC I have CS4 as well.
I've tryied saving an EPS for CS4 and CS3 and it won't work either.
    Can anybody help?
    thanks

    Ok, guys, sorry.
I had to wait to get the lines of the crash. To be more specific, then:
    Mac: Illustrator CS4. Using a Mac OS X 10.4.11
PC: Illustrator CS4. Using Windows Vista Ultimate.
About transferring the file, I tried sending it by e-mail form Entourage (with "Encode for any computer, Apple Double") and also saving it on a pen drive. Saved the file as a CS4 .AI
About opening the file, I tried to open it by clicking on the file and dragging it on the opened Illustrator window.
Error (The same for other files):
Cant'open the illustration. The illustration contains an incomplete or garbled object description.

  • Can't import Adobe Illustrator CS4 .ai files

I recently upgraded to Adobe Illustrator CS4. When I attempt to paste an .ai file into iWeb I see only a black rectangle. This was not the case with CS3 AI. It seems that I must now first convert the AI CS4 file into a .pdf or .eps before importing to iWeb. Also, QuickLook does not display either CS3 or CS4 versions of AI.
    Have others encountered these behaviors?

Are you referring to a Photoshop file with an alpha layer? iWeb and iPhoto do not support those. Nor does several other Apple applications like Preview, Quicklook, etc. Send a feature request to Apple via:

  • Illustrator CS4 big files

    Hello,
I've encountered issues with illustrator cs4 when creating banners or posters of 1mx2m, especially when exporting to jpg it says not enough memory.
There are a number of problems with blurs even on small file sizes such as A4 documents.
I never had these problems with CS3.
    System specs
    Mac Pro Eight-Core 2.8
    Snow Leopard
    12gig of Ram
    360gb main drive
    1Tb secondary drive
Now I don't think its my system and another thing I've noticed when using activity monitor to see how much of the system is used, it's virtually nothing, very low, 0.8%, etc, thats the cpu, physical memory is hardly none, vm isn't much either with many other apps open, it hardly uses any of my system, so where is Illustrator taking it's power from, as its not using much from my system?
    Thanks

  • Deleting Illustrator CS3 Preference File for PC

Can't seem to find the Preference file so that I can delete it on my hard drive. Tool tips doesn't show up when I hover over the tools and it's checked to show in the preference box. Also the CS3 graphic above the tool box doesn't show up.
I did a search on my comp and nothing came up and saw this
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c061edf/1
Still can't find that elusive aiprefs file folder. Any help?

An easy way on most Vista systems is to hit the start button, and in the Start Search field just above the button put in "AppData" without the quotes.
In the column above, you should see an AppData folder listed. Open that, And in side are three folders. Go into the Roaming folder and you will see an Adobe folder. Inside that will be the Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings folder.

  • Illustrator CS4 - frequently generates corrupt EPS files that will not parse

I have used many versions of Illustrator prior to and including the CS lines.  I am currently running CS4 and this is the first time I have experienced this issue.  Approximately half of my EPS formatted illustrator files will not parse.  I use Quark Xpress 7 for my layout (never liked any of the Indesign programs).  If I try to generate a PDF with my CS4 generated EPS files placed at least 60% of the time the placed file will corrupt the PDF export resulting in no PDF being generated.
Further to this PDF export issue, if I attempt to parse the same EPS file into Photoshop, Photoshop will give me the error message "Could not complete your request because Photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript" and it will abort the attempt to open the file.
Anyone else having Illustrator EPS file issues?
Background info (if needed) Dual 2.0 Ghz, PowerMac G5, 8 gb RAM, running Tiger 10.4.11
I have attached a sample Illustrator file that will not Parse.  It will open in Illustrator but not parse into Photoshop or if placed in Quark will not parse and allow for a PDF to be exported.

Thanks for taking the time to write Steve.
I understand that I can drag and drop between programs.  Ultimately, when attempting to parse an EPS in photoshop I am merely doing it to confirm that the EPS is indeed corrupt.
As mentioned previously, I predominately use Quark Xpress for my page layout program and until I installed CS4 I have had zero complications with using EPS files.  Now I quite commonly can not export PDFs due to corrupt EPS files.
My question to the public is I am alone in this glitch or do others experience the same issue.  My first thoughts are that CS4 has a glitch and I should be expecting an update in the near future.  But, if I am the only person suffering from this issue than maybe I should be looking at my own software.

  • How can I get my Illustrator cs4 original file settings?

My Illustrator cs 4 settings files have been corrupted by a virus and I need them so I can create a new document.  How can I get them? So far, I can't create a new document because of this problem.

Yes. You can change the Language you want installed using the Adobe Application Manager (AAM). You will need to uninstall the language you currently have before switching. Click on your name in the top left of AAM to access the Preferences menu which has the Language setting.

  • Illustrator 10.0 file corruption + upgrade question

Hi. I'm using Adobe Illustrator 10.0 and have since it came out. However, it's had a chronic corruption bug that results in files becoming uneditable- I cannot save, rename, move or delete them, which makes things a little frustrating. I have amassed quite the collection of frozen files, and many many 'save as copy' files. I am told the 'file is open in another application.' I *have* uninstalled/reinstalled Illustrator, used this copy of Illustrator on Windows XP, Vista and 7 and encountered the same bug in all three, restarted in safe mode and still been unable to edit the files, altered the folder properties from read-only to not-read-only and it's had zero effect. The only way I've found to get rid of the corrupted files is a wipe/reformat, which seems a bit extreme.
Also, as 10.0 is unlikely to work well with the next computer I get, is it still possible to upgrade to newer versions of Illustrator? I work a lot in locations that do not have internet access, so using the online subscription option for Illustrator is unfeasable for me and I'd prefer to purchase a full download/hard copy. I've read on other websites that I can upgrade to CS4, but as even CS4 is 'old' by today's standards I'd be interested to know if that's still possible or if I've missed my window of opportunity.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I'm asuming this file here--> https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=1870&fileID=1879 is the one you're refering to? I'll give it a try.
And am I understanding you correctly that 'no discount from 10' means no discount for any new Adobe products, not just cc? If so, I'll look for a second-hand copy of an earlier version. Are there any concerns I should be aware of in purchasing second-hand copies of Adobe products?

  • After Effects CS5.5 does not render any type of file, corrupted message.

    Hey guys,
About 2 days ago I was working on my file as usual (with no changes whatsoever to my software or hardware) and After Effects suddenly refuses to render my video and does not even go past one single frame, it will not render movies, image sequences, anything, it does not render period.
when I click on stop it gives me this message:
I have not changed any settings on my computer or After Effects and rendering this specific file worked fine before this random occurence a couple days ago, other files render work so something is wrong with this file specifically.
The project I am working on is a rotoscoping animation, I have used the Rotobrush on some MOV files, along with Particular Trapcode, and some effects such as Glow and Blur, nothing fancy.
Here's my technical info , hopefully it's enough detail:
    After Effects CS5.5
    Mac OSX 10.7.4
    Memory 16GB 1333 MHz DDr3
    3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5
    MOVIE FILES INFO:
    50fps
    1280x720
    h.264
    Linear PCM
    16-bit little-endian signed integer, 4800HZ (stereo LR)
File sizes range from 1.33Gb to 500mb (I can't compromise on quality as this is a big project)
Is there anything else you need to know? my deadline was yesterday and this is for a live show next week, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also audio's not a big deal as I'm not using it, here are some screenshots of my project settings.

At first the problem came back but then I disabled the 'media cache' option in Preferences as advised above, seems to work for now.
I keep having to turn this option on and off if I want it to render, there must be some way around this.

  • Everytime I download Firefox and then try to run it, I get a "file corrupted" message.

After downloading Firefox 6, I have tried to run Firefox 6 on three different computers and each time I get a message "file is corrupt". I tried it on different computers because I thought maybe there was a problem with the computer that I downloaded it on, but I get the same result. What am I doing wrong?

In the following, try the suggestions in 9, 10, and 11 in the following article first. If that does not work, look at the remainder of the suggestion in the following article.
