Illustrator CS4 to PDF, text characters lost?!

This sounds weird to me even as i type it. but i have converted a cs4 illustrator doc to a pdf and it is missing a character in one of the words. Lost during conversion??
is this some sort of fluke??
Heather

ok, i see i may be using the wrong language. the font is Minion Pro, and i did "save as" a pdf from illy CS4 and i just find it odd that this one h is missing.
it is from the outlined file which i find odd as well. this hasnt happened b4 which is why it worries me.
Embedding fonts? is this something i have to do when saving the pdf? i feel really dumb right now b-cuz this has never happened.
oh, and i attached the file, if you look in the first column of text fourth line down it reads 'ealthcare' instead of 'healthcare' which it reads in the .ai doc.
thank you everyone who is trying to help me! i really appreciate it!!!!

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

  • InDesign CS4 to PDF - Missing characters

I created a brochure (2-sided with lots of copy) using InDesign CS4; I exported it to PDF [Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)].
When opened in Acrobat 9 Professional on my computer, the file contents were perfect. The file was sent as an email attachment to prepress. When the printer opened it using Acrobat 7.0 Professional (don't know if it was on PC or Mac; they have both), there were missing characters.
The word "officer" occurred eight times in the document. In two of those occurrences, the characters "ffi" were missing. The remaining 926 words conveyed without a problem.
    Any insights will be appreciated.
    Frank

Embedding the entire font shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. InDesign embeds all the glyphs that are used. If the font is embedded at all, Acrobat only uses the embedded font.
Furthermore, Acrobat (including Acrobat 7) uses the local fonts option if and only if the font being accessed is not at all embedded and that particular font is on the user's system.
What is very suspect here is that the ffi ligature appears correctly in only 2 out of 8 occurrences in the word officer and that you see no problems on your system using Acrobat 9 Pro.
Here is what I would look for:
    (1) Ascertain that the font is really embedded at all. Use CTRL-D and look to see whether the font is either embedded or subset embedded. If neither, that is the source of the problem. You could also run a preflight profile to ascertain that all fonts are properly embedded.
    (2) You might want to find out what your printer is
really doing with your file. Is he opening a page or two in Illustrator, something can can cause very strange PDF corruptions? Are there any steps that he is performing before opening it in Acrobat such as processing it in some prehistoric workflow system that has more errors than an early Mets game?
    (3) Find out whether your printer at least has Acrobat 7 updated with all the updates issued by Adobe. They were a whole carload of them. I think about 12 such updates in the 24 months that Acrobat 7 was current. You might also want to suggest that at this point, Acrobat 7 is a fairly old version for any printer that wants to stay up to date in terms of PDF print publishing workflow.

  • Illustrator file contains pdf text rather than graphic

When I open an illustrator file I created about a year ago I now get a file that is filled with text saying:
This is an Adobe® Illustrator® File that was
    saved without PDF Content.
To Place or open this file in other
applications, it should be re-saved from
Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF
Compatible File" option turned on. This
option is in the Illustrator Native Format
Options dialog box, which appears when
saving an Adobe Illustrator file using the
    Save As command.
When I follow the instructions it literally saves the warning text that is shown, and there is no graphics.
When I try to "place" the file into a new illustrator file the preview shows my graphic, but when it is place it is just the repeating message.
Has anyone seen this or know a work around to get my graphic back

Looks like the file is corrupt.
Either you didn't save it with PDF compatibility or both parts of the file got corrupted.
When following the instructions did you save it under a different name or did you overwrite the existing file?
If you overwrote it, then your file is most probably gone forever. If you still have the original file you could try and recover it using third party tools. See a list of tools inthis post by Jacob Bugge: Re: How to recover an Illustrator CS2 file that crashed, with Illustrator CS5.5 ?

  • Illustrator CS4 crashing on text size

    doc.textFrames.getByName("FUERZA1").textRange.characterAttributes.size=15;
    redraw();
info: there is only one opened doc and actived.. so documents[0]..
and below my tree of layers
Curiously, when i execute in the ExTK console:
    doc.textFrames.getByName("FUERZA1").textRange.characterAttributes.size=15;
text size well changed, but when i execute the script (by play with ExTK or Illustrator) illustrator crashing
If anyone have an idea for why, please advise me

Seems to be a bug. Workaround : split the command into parts

    d.characterAttributes.size=15;

  • PDF Text Characters

File exported from crsytal reports to PDF.  Text good in crystal, but every letter "f" is followed by the letter "i". Example, word "of" displayed as "ofi" in PDF.  Word "forward" displayed as "fiorward" in PDF.

It sounds to me as if the font(s) used has/have not been embedded properly.

  • Illustrator CS4 error: Object label badly formatted?

has anyone received an error in illustrator CS4: Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficulties. Object label badly formatted? I am ON a mac and cannot open files after this error, help?

We now understand the problem, and are testing a solution. Here's my current understanding of all the elements of this issue.
CAUSE: The problem occurs in an interaction between Illustrator CS4, Suitcase Fusion 2 v13.2, and having an Illustrator document with one or more text boxes, containing text, which is *completely* off the artboard—not even the bounding box is touching the artboard. *Additionally*, there must also be at least one text box, with text in it, which is *on* the artboard (even so much as having the bounding box partly on the artboard is sufficient, again). When these conditions are met, saving the document *may* (but does not always) cause the problem.
PROBLEM: Attempting to open an affected document in Illustrator CS4 fails, with an "object label badly formatted" error. The problem can occur with older illustrator documents opened in CS4, as well as native CS4 documents.
UNAFFECTED: Despite any speculation in this thread, this problem does not affect Photoshop, nor has it occurred with any version of Extensis Suitcase older than Suitcase Fusion 2 v13.2, which shipped about eight days ago.
SOLUTION: The problem should be resolved by a 13.2.1 dot release. Although things could be delayed if we find something unexpected in testing, we currently expect to have the fix available this week, probably tomorrow (Thursday).
DOCUMENT RECOVERY: Extensis can fix any Illustrator CS4 document which exhibits this problem. For now, contact Extensis tech support if you need help with recovering any such Illustrator document. Be prepared to send tech support the affected Illustrator file(s). You can use the online contact form at http://www.extensis.com/en/support/contact_prod_support.jsp, or call tech support at 1-503-274-7030.
Special thanks to the users whose suffering and detailed reports helped us figure this out!

  • Why does PDF substitute characters when placed in Illustrator CS4?

When trying to place a PDF (x1a) Table into my illustrator file, it substitutes different characters. My hyphens and Quotation marks become latin and cyrillic substitutes. Even when I've outlined all fonts within the table before exporting to PDF x1a. When I open the PDF in Acrobat Pro or Photoshop it shows correctly. Only Illustrator shows it incorrectly. When I direct select the elements within the PDF in illustrator, it selects the outlines of the incorrect character. ???
My solution was to export from Indesign as an eps and it places just fine. I originally wanted to copy and paste the table (either outlined or not) from Indesign into Illustrator, as I'm sure usually totally works, but time and time again it wouldnt work. That was why I was going the place PDF route.
If anyone has come across this before, I'd love to know how/why this is happening, and how to fix... Thanks in advance.

    MMM, good ideas thank you!
When I open in Acrobat its fine. When I open as PDF in Illustrator its
    corrupt.
When I place in a new ai file, as a link, its fine. When I place in new
    file, embedded, its corrupt.
However, when I open as a PDF in Illustrator or place it as an embedded PDF
into Illustrator, it includes all the layers, I can select the separate
corrupt layers and delete them. So it turns out I can get rid of them with
    this process.
It seems perhaps its an indesign thing, and a Indesign Tables thing. When I
outline the Table and its contents, it creates another layer of outlined
text on top of the live text. If I try and delete the non-outlined text, it
deletes the Table lines?? So if I leave it as is, I believe its the live
text underneath that is substituting for some reason?

  • Random character appears when outlining text in Illustrator CS4 !!!

    Hi All,
Firstly, any help would be greatly appreciated.
My problem is shown below, I have an artwork containing live text produced in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac. On outlining the file for forwarding to prepress, a random "D" appears at the end of one of the sentences. I have been unable to find any reason for this. The "D" is not visible when the document is viewed in Outline Mode, it is not visible when hidden characters are shown, it cannot be selected using the text cursor, it appears regardless of what typeface is used, and there are no effects or transparencies applied to the text. Obviously this is of great concern, we produce artwork using live fonts, and on approval outline the files and forward them to a prepress bureau, the result of random characters appearing on printed material could prove very costly.
If the Illustrator document is saved as a CS2 compatible file from CS4, opened in CS2 and outlined this does not occur.
    Thanks,

Same thing here, but in CS3. Files came from a client, but appear to have been created and saved in CS3 also. I couldn't fix it with CS5.
In our case, it's a phantom W that sits on its own line before another W. No hard return, no soft return, no spaces, nothing shows with invisibles on. You can select it (using the shift and arrow keys) and format it, and the changes show up when you outline it. Select it and type a different character, and it winds up on the next line next to the "real" W, as it should. Double-clicking the word selects the phantom letter as well.
Type is area type, and it's rotated 180° (packaging). Original fonts were Trajan Pro and UniversLTStd.
    Anyone?

  • User can't open a PDF created with Illustrator CS4

I'm creating a PDF in Illustrator CS4, and I save it on a server where the user can get it. User is not able to open the file, it says acces denied. When I email that same file to several users, they can open it without a problem. I have checked that there's no restrictions on accessibility on the folder or the file. I wonder if it has to do with windows user permissions...
Our IT guy couldn't find any problem ....

  • Illustrator CS4 not flattening for PDF 3rd time asking this question

Everytime I save my Illustrator file as an Pdf file so I can upload it to the company I use for printing site, the layers are all off center. My printing company has not changed anything in there system to have this problem happen. I actually saved the to Illustrator CS3 then saved it as a PDF, and it uploaded fine and it was correct. It seem that Illustrator CS4 is not flattening the file correctly. I never had this problem with CS3. I contacted the adobe they have no idea why this is happening, they said it hould not be happening. Has anyone had this problem and how did you solve it?

here is an example, when I upload this image to the printers I loose the white background and eveything on the bottom of the card is pushed up. The same thing happens with the brochure I have. I can't upload that because this site will not allow it.

  • Saving Illustrator CS4 file to PDF for printing. NO FORUMS CAN HELP

I have put threads on the PDF forum, they told me to put it on Illustrator forum and still know one has an answer, Tried to contact Adobe about this and just got a run around. Can anyone please help?
My problem results from when I save my file from Adobe Illustrator to a PDF for printing. After saving from Illustrator to a PDF and proofing it on screen all my gradients and other elements are where I need them to be on the page. But when I upload them to my printing company template all the gradients and so on are not even close to be in the right spot. How can I solve this problem, Is there a new setting in CS4 I need to know? Because I never had this problem with Illustrator CS3.

    Hi Reggie,
I'm far from an Illustrator expert, but let's see if we can gather som more information form you that might help me, or someone else, figure out what's going wrong. Can you post a screnn capture of the arwork in Illustrator so I can see what the gradients are and how they're positioned? Use the little camera Icon thing in the toolbar above the message editing space on the web page.
Next, tell us about the printer's template. What application is it made in? What version?
What version of Illustrator and what OS are you using to create your art?
Is it only the gradients that are in the wrong place? Maybe a screen shot of that would help too.

  • PDF displays differently from Illustrator CS4 to Acrobat 9.1.x - no idea why

My name is Chris Plessinger. I'm the local IT support for a company that produces promotional products.
Recently, the Art Department came to me with a problem.
They had a graphic that was sent to them by the customer in a PDF file.
The PDF, when opened in Acrobat 9.1, shows an image with another image imposed on the lower left hand corner.
When the PDF is opened in Illustrator CS4, the image is there, but the smaller image that was imposed on the lower left corner isn't there.
In Illustrator, when you press CTRL-Y, you can see the outline of where it would be, but it's clearly not there.
I'm don't know enough about the software to determine why it is showing up in one Adobe product and not displaying in another.
I am uploading the file in question to this post.
I would be very, very appreciative of any feedback on I can get on this issue. I'm not a graphic artist and can't answer the question being posed to me.
    Regards,
    Christopher

    Sweet.
But I have a new question now: how (exactly) did you accomplish this? How did you flatten it?
Thanks for the quick response. I appreciate your taking the time to help.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • PDF Forms + Illustrator CS4 (losing form functionality after saving in Illustrator CS4)

I have a form set up that I use to keep information about various projects. The form was created in Illustrator CS3 and Acrobat Pro 8. Previously, data could be entered on the form by another Acrobat user, then opened in Illustrator CS3 by the artist to add artwork to the document. While open in Illustrator, none of the information entered on the form would be visible (the form would appear blank), but after saving the document and opening it in again in Acrobat Pro, both the artwork from Illustrator would appear and the information in the form fields would still be present as well as editable.
Now I take the same form, I can fill out the data fields in Acrobat Pro 9, save, then add artwork in Illustrator CS4 and save it, all form data is lost and I'm not able to add anything to it in Acrobat Pro 9. (Illustrator seems to be breaking the form and wiping out any info that was previously entered onto the form).
Any ideas on how to get around this? I tried taking the original document and running it through the forms wizard to sort of re-make the form in Acrobat 9, but I still lose form functionality and information once I save it in Illustrator CS4.

    Actually found a SOLUTION!
I guess in Adobe infinite wisdom and my lack of formal training in adobe acrobat
i was unaware of the TouchUp Object Tool (Tools>Advanced Editing>TouchUp Object Tool) it allows you to delete images and Place new images (although doesn't allow placement of .ai or .eps, just compressed images)
Can also nudge and remove other objects.
    Hope this helps.
