Illustrator CS5 - Black lines along all paths

I'm fairly new to Illustrator, so this may well be something incredibly easy and obvious, but it's been driving me nuts for the last hour. My google searches have been completely fruitless as well.
My problem is that on one of my files (A simple logo I've been working on), all of the paths have a black line along them. It's not the stroke settings, which was the only thing I could think of that it could be, several of the paths have strokes on them, and the proper stroke shows up, but with a black line over the top of it. The lines show up in any exported files, or when the AI files are opened in photoshop, but the black lines don't show up when I isolate the paths.
If anybody can help me with this it would be very much appreciated (and save me tearing my hair out)

My guess is that there are more than one stroke applied to the path. Open up the Appearance panel and click on the path, do you see an additional stroke applied to the path? If so, click on that stroke in the Appearance panel, and click the trash can icon at the bottom of the panel.

  • Black lines not all showing up the same color when exported as any type file

    Hi everyone,
I could really use some help as this is driving me crazy! Whenever I upload my Illustrator file with my logo online or export my logo as any type of file, certain black lines are lighter than others. I checked in Illustrator by clicking the lines that were showing up different shades when exported and all have the same #000000.
Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately my file is set up like a hot mess. Everything is in the same layer and I should have definitely done multiple ones. This is only the second logo I've designed and I'm learning as I go. Basically I did an image trace of the drawing and then went back and manually fixed lines. Instead of having only a few to select I have many all in the same layer as my color.
I noticed my vector logo works fine when exported. It's the files where I am resizing it that are coming up in the different colors.

  • How, in Illustrator CS5, can I select all objects with three points (or nodes)?

I am quite new to Illustrator, but it seems this should be simple.  (It is trivial in CorelDraw X4:  After selecting an object with three nodes, I go to Edit > Find and Replace > Find Objects > Find objects that match the currently selected object, and navigate through the remaining menus.)
In Illustrator CS5, the options under Select > Same do not seem to include selecting all objects with the same number of nodes as the currently selected object.
Double-clicking on the Magic Wand Tool also fails to provide such an option.
    Thank you for any help.
P.S.  Also useful would be knowing how to add other criteria to this search, e.g. how to select all objects with three points *and* the current fill color.

There is a script that can select "less than x points"

  • Best way to animate a line with a dot leading along a path

I need to animate a line along a path with a circle in front of it. Basically an 'i' path with the tail extending. Similar to the shape in this image http://www.ravishankar.me/images/intro/skelta-connect2.png
    Ive tried:
Using and animating a shape tween, its very time consuming and would only really work without the dot
Using a mask doesnt seem to work either as its not a basic line
And making it a symbol on a path in a motion tween also doesnt follow the line to how i need it
    Any suggestions please!?

You could do a frame by frame animation.  The easiest way to do it is to work the animation backwards along the timeline, removing a piece of the line (and moving the dot) in each frame and then reversing the frames when you are done.

  • Hi, my Macbook Pro just shut down for no reason. Before, there were black lines all over the screen. Then it shut down and it started to make beeps (3). What can I do?!

I was using my computer just as usual, I was on Microsoft Words and doing lectures on the Internet. Then, out of nowhere, the screen froze and black lines appeared all over the screen and the computer shut down. The screen was all black, but I think it was still open because my laptop was doing sounds, three beeps. When it beeps, the little light that shows you when your laptop is open is bright, so the beeps and the light are synchronized. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, help me!!!

There is a hardware problem. Possibly bad RAM. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • My illustrator cs5 eyedropper tool will not pick up any color! help!

I have been scrolling through this forum and google, and have not found an answer.
My Illustrator CS5 has been working all day, and I went away from it momentarily to pack some boxes for moving and the eye dropper tool started picking up colors that didn't exist in the placed image i'm grabbing from.
(clearly not black within that circle...)
I "found" a solution on this site where you go into your eyedropper options and make sure your appearance boxes are checked, and they weren't so I did that, and now the eyedropper tool won't pick up any color at all.
I have a project deadlines that require this program, and i've tried just about everything but re-installing.
    Anybody have ANY solutions?
Here are the way my settings are now:
P.s. I'm not crazy tech saavy, so go explanation crazy if you'd like.

It's not live traced just vectored with the pencil tool!
I was trying to grab the individual pixel color from a jpeg, cmyk image to apply to the shapes drawn with the pencil tool.
I'm not sure what the problem was with the tool/program, but it seems to have fixed itself!
However, I appreciate your response anyways!

  • Thin horizontal black line at BOTTOM of page when scan on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus

I owned an HP Officejet Pro 8500 and scanning was perfect.  I recently purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.
When I scan from the HP 8600 auto document feeder, I get a thin (several pixel wide) black line along the bottom edge of the resulting scan.  This line will sometimes be slighly crooked or only appear across half the page, in which case it tends to get thicker toward the edge of the page).  I believe this line is an artifact from scanning the very bottom edge of the oroginal document.  I think it is showing where the bottom edge of the page was when scanned.  If the document is a little skewed, then the black line at the bottom will be a little crooked, probably following the edge of the page.  This problem is consistent, and repeatable.  It happens in both "Scan To E-mail" mode and "Scan To Network Folder" mode.
When I scan from the flat bed, I get a very narrow black line along the very top edge of the resulting scan, but the bottom appears fine (although I've not tested this extensively).
These thin black lines did not occur when scanning from the HP 8500.
I am wondering if there is a setting to adjust this, or if it is a firmware difference between printers that needs debugging.
    This question was solved.

I find it interesting that the issue happens across both printers.  This is what leads me to believe this is something with the software/connection with the PC.  One thing I will note is that you mentioned above using Adobe Reader 10.1.6.  The latest version of Adobe Reader is 11.0.02.  I would advise removing your current version of Adobe Reader and install the latest version.
I am not sure if this will fix the issue as you mentioned the line comes across in jpeg and other scanning styles.  Do you possibly have another PC you could try setting up a connection with quickly and attempting a scan?  This would be another way to ensure if the issue is coming from the printer or a connection/software issue.
I would like to make sure the issue is coming from the scanners on these printers before returning the printers as I would hate for you to get another model printer and the issue remain with this printer as well.  However, I will note that the Laserjet Pro 200 is a nice series printer from my experience.  I have used the Laserjet Pro 200 black and white only edition, the MFP, and the TopShot edition where I am located.

  • Illustrator CS5 Error on Windows 7 64 bit, Uninstalled Illustrator CS5, Tried Re-Installing Illustrator CS5 on same pc new error

    Hi,
I have been using the Adobe Creative Suite CS5 for a few years and haven't had a problem.
Recently, illustrator just would not open would get to initializing illustrator.exe and stay there. I tried uninstalling illustrator in the hopes it would fix it with a reinstall.
I got the download file and when I tried to open in to reinstall, I get this error "The file archive part of Adobe Illustrator CS5 is missing. You need all parts in the same folder in order to extract Adobe Illustrator CS5. Please download all parts." I then tried to download the whole Creative Suite and same error message occurred. I am not sure what to do or if I should just uninstall the whole creative suite and start fresh (would rather not because I don't want to lose my preferences and presets).
    I am on Windows 7 64bit.
If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

Uninstalls do not affect user-defined prefs and other custom files, but of course it may be a good idea to back everything up. A reinstall may be the only way to fix this. The error occurs because something else has introduced a flaky entry in the installer database and it goes looking for some file from a source that no longer is available. run the cleaner tool and reinstall everything after you have secured your prefs.

  • Illustrator CS5 15.0.2 crash when Save for Web and Devices (Mac)

    Hi baffled with this.
When Saving for Web and Devices in Illustrator CS5 (15.0.2), the application now freezes and has to be force quit.
HOWEVER if I delete the Users/~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_GB folder all works well until I quit the application, then the freeze will happen again. I had this happen before so under the advice of Adobe I created a new user and all was fine for that user so I transferred everything across... a laborious task.
So my question now is why now?... what has triggered this AGAIN?...
    Hope you can help... anyone.
    Running:
    Mac OS X 10.6.6
    Mac Pro tower.
    Note:
    have uninstalled, reinstalled, updated 15.0.1 - 15.0.2
    have deleted all font caches
have deleted everything... that could be related...
HOWEVER have narrowed it down to the 'Adobe Illustrator Prefs' file in the Users/~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_GB folder
Please too note this is not the folder permissions issue, am aware of that and have thoroughly checked all permissions, ran disk utility and disk warrior.
    thanks

If you use cocktail I suggest you get rid of it it can cause serious problems if you select the wrong settings, instead download ONYXwhich is free and will not harm your system or corrupt anything by deleting something you actually need.
I hit the wrong setting using cocktail and it locked me out of all of the hard drives installed or connected to my Mac it is very dangerous. And I cannot imagine a reason for a setting that would protect your hard drives from yourself to the point of not recognizing your own password.
I know it cost money and has advanced settings but having the ability to kill your system is crazy.
Also to repair your permissions use the disk utility or ONYX as the permissions can become changed when installing software or if cocktail changes it locking you out of folders etc.

  • Printing from InDesign - black lines

    Good afternoon all,
I've started using InDesign CS6 at work to produce advertising catalogues. I've hit a bit of a wall when I print it and would like a bit of help to try and solve my issue(s).
I have a booklet set up to print 4 pages of A4 on to double-sided A3. I printed my latest proof from InDesign this morning (just to A4)and it looked OK. I then tested it using the glossy paper we have just got today and this is when I noticed some thin black lines on the A3 print.
To help give an idea of what I'm working with, it is a catalogue/brochure with 6 or 7 product images per page, each with a price point graphic (a circle with the price in a text frame within). The price point overlaps the product image by varying degrees.
I've just checked again and the thin black lines are all on the left-hand edge of objects - both product images and price point images. I acquired the images from the DLibrary and the price point graphics came from a previous designer.
The black lines do not appear on every product image, neither do they appear on every price point. They are not all the same size (height) as the frame that they are on, if that makes sense. For instance, I have an image of a pack of coffee, and the black line starts at the top of the left-hand side and finishes about halfway down. The price point for the coffee has a black line all the way down the left-hand edge.
I have printed the catalogue to A4, it was 100% fine. I print to A3 and these lines appear. I know I could export to pdf and print from there, but that then leaves the centre spread with a white stripe down the middle and I don't have the tools or the knowledge to get rid of the borders that appear in Adobe Reader.
I've looked in the settings and can't find anything that looks like it will help. Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks for the tip Mikey - however the same thing happens with the thin black lines when I print on 'normal' A3 paper too. On normal A4 paper it's fine, no lines, but when I print to A3 I get the lines - on both kinds of paper.
I've attached a couple of (awful-looking) scans to help illustrate my point.

  • Illustrator CS5 Mac - slow opening EPS from SMB share

    Hi folks,
Have a customer that is having an issue with opening EPS files in Adobe Illustrator CS5 15.0.2 (all updates applied) on a Core i5 iMac (8 GB RAM) under Mac OS X 10.6.6.
It will take minutes to open up a larger size EPS file (98 MB in one test case extensively). I can copy this same file to the local disk in a matter of a second or two, and the file opens in 5-6 seconds, as opposed to several minutes. Looking at Activity Monitor, I don't see significant CPU utilization but network througput pegs at 4.2 MBit. I've confirmed the switch and the iMac are both seeing 1000Mbit, full duplex.
Interestingly enough, if I take said .EPS file and save it as an .AI file, and copy that up to the server (couple seconds, file size drops to 68 MB), I am able to open the file off the server in seconds. It's only when it's EPS format is there a problem. Of course, the customer's output device RIP will not accept anything other than .EPS, so changing workflows and file formats isn't an option.
I duplicated this performance issue on multiple machines on their network, so it's not just an issue with one computer, but all of them. I am not privy to the details of the server, have an email in to ask.
I know that Adobe generally does not recommend working directly off a file server; however I'd venture to say that most 3+ person design/production groups do exactly that. If .AI works correctly, can't see why .EPS wouldn't...
    --Robert

    Replying to my own post...
It was Suitcase Fusion 3 and its Illustrator CS5 auto-activation plugin. Disabled the plugin, performance delays go away.

  • SVG connector lines missing when opened in Illustrator CS5

It has taken a while to jiggle SVG files saved in Inkscape and get them to open in Illustrator CS5. The files are basically a flow chart with some text and connecting lines between the rectangular boxes.
Now we are getting  text and rectangular boxes to show when the SVG file is opened in Illustrator.  However, the paths (or connector lines) that show the flow between boxes are not shown.
The file we are opening has about 10 layers and initially, it looked like just a blank document.  We had to click the top layer in the layer group "on", to see all the layers.  I guess the default is having the top layer "off".
When opened in a browser, the  connector lines are showing up fine (although the arrow heads are turned sideways).
Suggestions for getting connector lines to show up in Illustrator?
    Thanks!

I suppose Inkscapes equivalent of AI's Expand function would be advisable. I'd have to revisit inkscape one of these days, but I believe they are using styles to descripe the conenctors, not genuine objects, hence nothing shows up in programs that don't understand the Inkscape lingo...

  • Reverse path direction in Illustrator CS5

I have started to use Illustrator CS5 for outline drawing this year. I purchased the license time ago, but I always preferred to use FreeHand for outline drawing (I design lettering and typefaces).
Now that FreeHand is unfortunately become a bit too obsolete for the new operating systems architectures, I have familiarized myself with Illustrator and was going decently, but I have been unable to find a solution to this problem yet:
Whenever I need to reverse the direction of a path (for various reasons), I can’t seem to find a way to do so, unless of course it’s a composed path (from two closed paths). I need to perform this operation. At work, I use InDesign CS6 and I have seen Adobe has introduced it in its palette, but I can’t find it in Illustrator CS5 or CS6.
Many thanks in advance to all those who could help me…

You can temporarily make the simple path into a Compound Path (same thing as a FreeHand Composite Path) and then the reverse direction buttons in the Attributes palette will work. But like most everything in Illustrator, it's needlessly cumbersome:
Select the single path (Object>Compound Path>Make).
Select a portion of it with the white pointer. (Deselect, then click a segment or an anchor; don't altClick it to select the whole path, because Illustrator doesn't know the difference between a path's being selected as an object, as opposed to merely having all its anchors selected.)
Click the Reverse Direction button in the Attributes palette.
Deselect. Then select the whole path (sigh).
    Object>Compound Path>Release.
    Ridiculous, isn't it?
The scripting object model provides for a path direction setting (polarity), but interface doesn't provide access to it on normal paths. This simple script will reverse the polarity of currently selected paths:
    //Begin Script
    for(i=0;i<activeDocument.selection.length;i++){
    if(selection[i].polarity==PolarityValues.POSITIVE){
      selection[i].polarity=PolarityValues.NEGATIVE;
    }else{
      selection[i].polarity=PolarityValues.POSITIVE;
    //EndScript
Of course, while drawing glyphs, you'll soon run into the lack of other FreeHand no-nonsense features, such as extend/retract individual handles. And there's nothing you can do about the lack of Connector Points which ensure tangency between straight and curved segments.
What font program are you using? FreeHand's progenitor, Fontographer, from which its path drawing interface was derived (and which pre-dated Illustrator), is now owned and sold by FontLab. I would (and do) use that.

  • ArcGIS 10.0 to Illustrator (CS5).... Edit, Save, Reopen, Clipping masks are all gone....

I am working from ArcGIS 10.0 to Illustrator CS5.
I make my map in ArcGIS. The layers are in four groups (VECTORS: top, middle, bottom + RASTER). I export the map from layout view to an .ai file. I open the .ai file in illustrator. Edit a couple things. Save the document. Seems simple enough... when I open it it should look just like it did when I just saved it two seconds ago, right?
    Nope.
After saving, closing, and reopening all my clipping masks are gone. They have disappeared/ automatically released. I have tried this same process on my personal computer (this issue is happening on a work computer) and I am not having an issue (GIS layers are in groups, I export, open, edit, save, close, reopen... still all clipped and the way I want it). I'm not sure if it is the settings on the work computer that are causing the clipping masks to automatically release on their own or what. When I look through the layers in my .ai file (post save, reopened file) the former clipping masks are now just 'paths.' but if I reclip them they mess up my layers and it seems like a tedious and unnecessary process (especially if the whole thing is working out correctly on my personal computer).
Does anyone have any idea why illustrator is automatically releasing my clipping masks upon saving?
Is it a GIS issue? Or an Illustrator issue? Are my settings wrong? Help!

The first thing you must do when opening an Arc AI file is to do a Save As and overwrite the original file with a new copy of the file in whatever the version of AI you have. If you just do a Save of the Arc file, it will revert to an AI3 file. Everything will be placed on a single layer.

  • Illustrator CS5 with Epson R1900 = aliasing lines

    Hi all,
I've been searching for answers as to why my Epson R1900 is printing with aliased lines when printing from Illustrator (CS5), without much luck. I've read in another forum that it is perhaps a driver issue but have not found confirmation from other sources. We haven't used the printer in a few months and this is the first time it is happening. I'm fairly knowledgable about color mangement and using the correct profiles and have tried various combinations with no luck.
I've downloaded and installed the latest Combo Update from Epson's website and have gone through the deletion and reinstall process about three times. The colors are accurate and the Print Utility works well (showing ink levels etc), but the quality of the line work is obviously aliased. The hitch is that if I convert the files to PDF, then print from Acrobat Reader, the line quality is perfect. I really don't want to (nor feel I should have to), convert my files to PDFs to print them (because of the workflow, it becomes a little harder to manage the color correctly and transparencies get tricky).
Can anyone please provide some insight and/or help with this?
    FYI:
    Color space: sRGB
Set to let Illustrator handle color.
Media Profile: Epson Ultra Prem Presenation Matte
Color result: Very acceptable (maybe 95% accurate)
Thanks for your time and help!
    Cheers,
    Michael

Can you manually tweak the ink and line bleed setting in the printer driver? Sounds like that just needs to be set a little higher for the printer to produce additional droplets for the antialiasing...
