Illustrator CS5 closes the Actions palette

When I click 'File > New', my Actions palette suddenly vanishes from the workspace. If I re-enable it, it appears in the correct position.
Sometimes (usually), it is already missing when I start the program.
I have tried the following but none have cured the problem:
- Re-saving workspace with original name, and with new name
- Enabling and disabling Button view in Actions palette
- Docking the palette to others, and undocking it
- Moving it to various screen positions
- Rebooting the PC
- Spending >1 hour trying to searching for an existing solution using the world's most ineptly-designed support website ...

I also started having this problem yesterday too. I tried everything from deleting all my fonts except the standard ones, deleting preferences and re-installing but nothing seemed to work.
I fixed it though by doing the following:
1. Going here and downloading the "amtlib.dll.rar" file.
2. Extracting it to a folder on my HD.
3. Navigating to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5\Support Files\Contents\Windows".
4. Copying (or cutting) and then pasting the "amtlib.dll" to the above folder overwriting the file that's there (you can back it up before hand if needed).
I could then startup Illustrator CS5 without any problems. So there seems to be a problem with the "amtlib.dll" file, I don't know whether certain fonts can corrupt it or not but this fixed it for me.

I'm in need of a piece of JavaScript code that will delete all the Action Sets in the Actions Palette. I've scripted the logic to load the appropriate Action Set once needed but I don't want to end up with duplicates at the end of processing the batch.

Illustrator CS5 Not the Default for EPS and other Vector Formats

Hey everyone, the issue I'm haveing is not just with Illustrator, but sense I couldnt find a general CS5 forum, and Illustrator was the last CS5 application i noticed this for I'm hoping to find some answers here.
So on to the issue....
I have noticed that on other computers (Macs for sure) that Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc... are set as the default handlers of certain file types that are associated with each application, and as such, give each filetype there own little icons reflecting such.
However on my system (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) this does not seem to be the case. I can go in and set them as default manually, which I have done for the filetypes I use most frequently, but I do not get to enjoy the nice icons that made for each filetype, i just get a bland, default icon that is the same for every filetype.
Is there a way to fix this issue?

Yes, I think i mentioned it before that I knew I could set the default app through Explorer (right clicking, going to "open with" etc..) but this doesn't let you use any of the custom icons that come with the adobe applications, it sets it as the default icon associated witht he particular application. I'll take a look in the properties when I get home but, but I think you may be referring to the "open with" dialogue.
Most applications like Firefox, iTunes etc.. have a button in there preferences menu to "set as default" for all file types they can open, however I don't see such an option in any Adobe applications except for bridge, and that doesn't seem to do anything.

I believe in the properties pane for one of those files it will display the default app for opening such files and you can change it there as well and make it apply to all similar files.

Illustrator crashes everytime the Swatch palette is used

So my PC Illustrator CS3 version crashes everytime when a color is picked from the Swatch Palette. Any idea?

BTW have you installed any fonts recently or software or update any software?

Adobe Illustrator cs5 closes as soon as it is opened HELP

it seems like I tried it all...
I have tried to re-install the software, I have deleted the preferences, I have tried to download an amtilb.dll file but it still does the same thing as soon as I open illustrator it closes itself straight away.

Have you tried uninstalling, running the cleaner tool (Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6), and then reinstalling?

Illustrator CS5 closes right after it opens

After many, many months of being a reliable companion, one of our Illustrator CS5 installations has suddenly started closing itself immediately after opening. We've deleted preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, deleted all but the system fonts, created a new user -- all to no avail.
At this point, we know the following:
It's not a font issue (all but system fonts have been deleted).
It's not a preferences issue (software was uninstalled and all remaining folders were deleted).
It's not a plug-ins issue (software makes it to the workspace before closing).
The splash screen says "Tryout Version," even though it's the regular software.
We have a similar problem with InDesign CS5, but the rest of the suite works perfectly.
The weirdness is happening on a Dell XPS 420 quad core, running Windows 7 64-bit. Everything else on the box is stable and reliable, and has been so for some time. The video card is an older nVidia, with the latest version of driver software.
Since this PC is our heavy production box, we're crippled without the software. We've run through just about everything in the knowledgebase and forums, so any fresh insights into what's going on are extremely welcome.

HELP! How do I get my *.ai files editable again in Illustrator CS5? The tab says "(RGB/Preview)"

I've used Illustrator on and off since about 1988 [I'm a casual user, not a power user], and this is the first time I've ever seen this. I worked on the file all night, saved it repeatedly, closed it and opened it several times. Now, about 10 minutes later, when I open it, it's as if the file is a single image - totally uneditable. I've obviously tried clicking everything I can find... nothing helps.
I've opened some other files I worked on last week, and they still edit fine [how long will it be before they succomb to this sleeping sickness, too?] Their tabs say "CMYK/Preview", while the paralyzed file says "RGB/Preview" [You'd think it would be trivial to change back and forth, wouldn't you? BONG - it's not. After maybe 150 tries of every button around, no luck]. The STROKE and FILL menus contain no color choices, only one object [the entire picture] exists and can be selected, etc.
Basically, for the first time in 25 years, I am totally dead in the water in Illustrator, with a screaming deadline, no clue how to fix this, tried everything for hours, looked at dozens of utterly useless forums, and have no real desire to spend another 16 hours recreating these pictures from scratch. [Plus, how would I know these files would not become zombies, too?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Want actions from CS2 action palette in CS5

Hello, I had Photoshop CS2 on my old laptop and created some actions for improving photographs. That computer died but I managed to save the hard drive. On my new laptop I have Photoshop CS5 and I'm desperate to be able to use my old actions. I have the action palette.psp file from my CS2 files - is there a way I can 'put that into' my CS5 folders so I can access the actions? Grateful for any help!

What you could try is to go to the preferences folder...

Rename the actions file, and put the cs2 file in its place, start Photoshop then save the action sets out. Close Photoshop. Remove the CS2 file and rename the actions file back again, start Photoshop and load the actions sets you have just saved.
I don't have CS5 on a Mac but it looks as if the documentation could be wrong as it shows "Actions panel.psp" for the actions file?
Should this be "Action Palette.psp"
Edit: - yes the documentation is incorrect.

Illustrator CS4 Action Palette bug

Does anyone know if the action palette bug has been addressed? I saw a thread from Nov 2008 that confirmed I am not an isolated incident. I can't get all the steps in my action to save when I reopen Illustrator. Particularly "show all layers". I am working in 10.4.11, and I don't see any Illustrator updates available to me at this time. Thanks!

That's funny it doesn't happen here and don' get this wrong but it seems odd that you have been working with CS 4 all this time and never brought this issue up before.
Of course you could be on windows and it could be a platform specific issue though it seems odd that all this time has passed and it is the first we are hearing about it.

Color and Swatches palette behaviour in Illustrator CS5

I only use the Swatches palette, but when I click the Tools palette color chips to select between stroke and fill, Illustrator brings up the Color palette by default; I have to go back and re-open the swatches palette - quite tedious.
Is there any way to change this behaviour?
I haven't been able to find anything useful in the Help or via Google - probably because I can't describe the issue in a few words!

Actions palette question

Hi all! This might seem petty, but I'm curious. When I run an action in Illustrator CS4, the action palette item "shows itself." i.e., normally, I have all my actions so that only the name of the action appears (the arrow to the left is pointing to the right). But when I run the action, the arrow points down, revealing all the steps in the action. I have a lot of actions, so if I run them, it either takes up a lot of space on my desktop or I continuously have to scroll up and down to find the action I'm looking for because they are all showing all their steps.
Is there a way to stop it from showing all the steps? I don't want to see the steps when I run the actions.

Yes, the action "showing itself" behavior is very annoying, and I'm pretty sure that it has been requested that it be fixed.
Another way to get around this is to assign F-Keys to your actions. You have up to 48 combinations available: F1 thru F12; alone, with command key, with shift key, and with both. (F13, F14, and F15 don't work)
If you have the entire Action SET closed, you can use the F-Keys to run the actions without the palette "exploding" open on you.
By the way, you can also close all the revealed actions in a set at once if you hold down the option key while closing the set. You may have to do it twice.

The issue I've recently come across has to do with saving files as a pdf with Illustrator CS5 and the file type and creator. In the code below, if the code is changed to save as pdf (no options), the type and creator end up being question marks. I changed it to save with options and backed the pdf version to Acrobat 5, then the type and creator were correct.

How do i save the actions that I install?

I recently upgraded from cs3 to cs5. I had to reinstall my 3rd party actions into cs5. They will not save into the actions palette. Everytime I restart cs5 I have to reinstall the actions and this gets tiresome. NEVER had this problem with cs3. Anyone know what to do?

They should stay there once loaded. Are you exiting Photoshop gracefully after loading them?

Illustrator CS5 crashes on programmatically closing document.

Hi,
I have developed a plugin in which I need to close an active document on click of a button. On clicking my plugin menu item a dialog opens with "Ok" and "Cancel" button. On clicking "Ok" button, the plugin will first close the active document and then will close the dialog and clicking on "Cancel" button will close the dialog.
My plugin works and closes the document and dialog but after few seconds or if I shift focus from Illustrator, the Illustrator crashes with the following message:
"Unhandled exception at 0Xbaadf00d in Illustrator.exe:0XC0000005:Access violation reading location 0Xbaadf00d".
I am using sAIDocList->Close() function to close the active document and EndModal function to close the dialog.
I am on windows Xp and using Illustrator Cs5 and Cs4.
Can someone please guide me on why the crash is occuring and how can I solve this crash??

your best bet may be to try and solve the problem without finding the problem.
uninstall illustrator cs5
run the cleaner (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html)
then reinstall illustrator cs5.

Very new and very green to illustrator.
Have used only once or twice since i bought it.
Unfortunately when i need to use it now - it crashes
upon starting up.
I received the following error message:

Haven't a clue what to do!

Updates can fail due to any number of system issue. They are more prone to failing if you alter the application in any way. On the Macintosh, popular applications such as Monoligual will remove application package contents and therefore cause updates to fail.
The easiest solution is to uninstall Illustrator CS5 using the uninstaller and then reinstall Illustrator CS5, then immediatlly run the 15.0.1 update.
