Illustrator CS5 Color Picker Issue

When selecting particularly bright colors in the color picker with CMYK, when i try to select the color, one box comes up with the color and a yellow triangle error sign and another comes with a much duller shade, and no matter what I do the duller shade is what it will give me. I keep searching for solutions to this problem and everywhere it says that the color is not availiable in CMYK and it's just choosing the closest color, but the thing is, i can make the vibrant color with the color panel and it'll show up fine. It's just the color picker.

It's not a problem. You can make a lot of colors with the Color Picker which is showing which will not be translated into CMYK just as the warning says. Look at the Help files or Google "Color Gamut" to see what is available.

Fill color picker issue

When I double click on the fill color in the tool bar the color picker window opens. Unfortunately it is opening to a color that is not the color of my fill such as this orange here instead of the green. I am wondering if I have some sort of color theme option turned on somewhere? I have opened artwork created by someone else. We are both using Illustrator CC. This particular issue shows up in Illustrator CS5 also. Issue: in the links pallet a weird gray gradient keeps replicating. I cannot identify it in the artwork. It is an embedded image. I cannot get rid of it and it keeps reproducing. WHAT is it and why can't I delete it?

Hello, yes it is reproducing over and over. I look in the original artwork and there are 28. I did not save over the original art but “save as”. Worked on the new file for a while and now there are 47!. I copied all the content to a new blank, all colors removed, file and there they were. If I click on them can’t relink, won’t show a bounding box, no frame in wire-frame, no stray points. they are ghosts. Here is an image, to give a better visual of how they look in links panel. Photoshop CS5 Color picker problem

Hey!
Suddeny my Photoshop CS5 Color picker has gone wrong. It wouldn't let me change Foreground or Background colors and goes back to gray all the time. I have not changed any settings, but last time I used it was yesterday and all worked ok.
I have restarted my PC sereveral times, that shouldn't be a problem!!

Illustrator CC - Color Picker for BLACK always shows 60C:90M:0Y:0K

In Illustrator CC, the color picker in the tool bar when showing 100% Black Text always comes up as 60% Cyan, 90% Magenta and nothing else. The little box on the tool bar will be black. The text will be black. But if I double click on the little box and get the Color Picker Window to appear, it has 60% Cyan and 90% Magenta filled in. If I change it to 100% Black and nothing else, hit enter, it will show as black but if I open the picker again, it will still be 60C 90M.
It only does this with 100% Black. If I have any other color it shows accurately as it should.
When Color separated the file is comes out right with the 100% as I want it. So really, its not a problem thats ruining the file its more of a preview thing and I am just curious as to why its doing it.
Illustrator CC 18.0.0 2014 Release.
Mac OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks.

I wonder whether it is a (hitherto unnoticed) bug, in which case a ug report would be called for,

or a corruption of preferences or something similar, in which case the list (maybe especially 4) or 6)) would be called for.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Illustrator CC Color Picker not working

On selecting a new color in the color picker, the object does not update to the new color until you choose OK. Anyone else with this bug?

The usual Color Picker bug is that there is a two colour bar to the right of the rainbow bar.
The following may still help, hopefully.
It seems that the issue is caused by a corrupt folder called en_US or similar (depending on language) within the Adobe Illustrator 18 Settings folder, see post #7 by Jules in this thread,

so the solution should be to move or rename that folder (or the whole Adobe Illustrator 18 Settings folder).
You can find the folder in Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed.

Hud color picker issue?

cs5 recently installed on mac at workplace. I don't seem to be able to switch form the wheel in preferences. Have chose strip, but still have wheel on restart of app. What I would like more is to be able to turn it off, I find it really annoying.I know if I turn off the gpu stuff it goes away, but the zoom thing is nice. Any answer?

The HUD Color Picker is not the same as the Eyedropper tool sampling ring. I assumed you were talking about the sampling ring and wanted to turn it off. If you are talking about the HUD color picker not changing from Hue Wheel to Hue Strip, sorry for my misunderstanding. I'm not sure what might be the underlying issue for that case.

CS5 Color Picker HUD

I have PS CS5 (version 12.0.4x32). The Color PIcker HUD doesn't seem to work (shift-alt-right click). The Enable OpenGL Drawing box is greyed out and there's a note that PS "Standard" not supported. What's going on? Do I have aversion of PS that doesn't support the Color HUD? How do I find out if I have PS "Standard" How can I fix this?

At your suggestion, I went to Help > System Info, and here's everything that I found. Note that OpenGL Drawing is now enabled (it was greyed out before but not anymore, I don't know why), but when I click "Advanced Settings" I find that Mode is set to "Basic" and it's greyed out (i.e. I can't change it). The HUD color picker still does not work. BTW, I'm very appreciative of the help and attention you're giving to this. Thanks.

Photoshop CS3: Color Picker Issue

Hello All,
I am having a bit of an issue with my Color Picker.
As you know, when you open up the Color Picker, it has the large square with the assortment of colors on the left and the details of the color on the right.
As of today, Photoshop won't let me use my cursor to click and select a color from within that large square. Nor can I scroll up and down the rainbow color strip on the side.
Is there a way to get those features back?

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

Color Picker Issues

I just got a new system here at work and noticed that when I select a color and bring up my color picker the color shown in it is far off from the color selected and I can not figure out why. In Photoshop, my color picker matches fine. Does anyone have any idea what the cause is?

CS5 Color Picker HUD Problem

Shift-Alt-Right Click-Drag doesn't bring up the Color Picker HUD. Someone suggested making sure "Enabale OpenGL Drawing" box is checked, but tis greyed out (says that Photoshop Standard" not supported). Is this the problem? What is Photoshop "Standard" and how do I find out if I have it?

Photoshop CS5 can be licensed as Extended or Standard; in Standard several features are deactivated, but I don’t think the HUD Color Picker is one of those.
Check out Photoshop > About Photoshop to see if you have Photoshop Extended.

What is your GPU?
If it is not on this list it may be too »old« to provide OpenGL.

Photoshop CS5 Color Picker and Gradient Maps

I painted a black & white image and put a gradiant map adjustment layer on top to test some colors for the final image.
I set the color picker to "current layer" to keep painting on the black & white Background Layer to get the levels right without actually using color.
But as soon as I open the gradiant map again, the colorpicker picks ONLY the colors from the gradiant map adjustment layer.
Even if I switch off or DELETE the gradiant map, the color picker keeps picking the colors from the gradiant map, that is without ANY color in the whole document.
This seems to be a bug. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

Thanx for checking. Resetting the preferences seemed to have done the trick. But after I opened the Gradiant Map, it happened again. Fiddling with my settings i finally found the clue. This strange behaviour only happenens, when the Panelwindow of "adjustments" is minimized and docked. As long as the window is fully opened and visible, everything is ok.
Strange though, but glad i found a workaround.

Develop module color picker issue...

I've noticed that in Version 3.3 that when I try to use the color picker it doesn't show the numbers (color representations) when moving the picker over an image.

This is a confirmed bug in 3.3 and has been reported.

How can I set Illustrator CS5 color settings using Javascript?

I can set Photoshop color settings with the app.colorsettings ('File') in javascript, but I cannot locate an object in Illustrator that would perform the same task. I can only find readonly objects for illustrator. I would like to have illustrator read a script file to set the color setting
upon startup.

Hi imagecollection, that was kind of true in 2010, color mode was possible to be changed via Actions and vbs or as

with CS6 or newer it is more straight forward since js can play actions, and even easier using executeMenuCommand...however I'm not sure if the OP needs to change color mode or if he wants to load color profiles.

Illustrator CS5-duplicate/pan issue

I just started having the problem where holding down my option key to duplicate doesn't work and holding down the space bar doesn't bring up the hand. I was hoping that my recent update to 15.0.2 would have solved the problem but it didn't. I'm suspecting I hit a key command that is causing this issue. I just wish I could remember what I did. If anyone can help me with this problem it would very appreciated.

The only software that I do have, from those you mentioned, is Firefox. After reading some of the other discussions on this issue I decided that it would be easier to reinstall Illustrator. That seemed to have resolved the modifier key problem, even with the current update to Illustrator. But I'm curious to know about what in Firefox affects Illustrators modifier keys to go bad. Is it something that happens often or just randomly?
