Illustrator CS5 Maximum Artboard Size?

Hi! I'm on Illustrator CC but need to supply a signage file in Illustrator CS5. Does anyone know the maxiumum artboard size for Illustrator CS5?
Thanks!

  • Maximum Artboard Size (Not Canvas Size)

    Hi,
    I read that maximum canvas size is 227in but Illustrator CC on both mac and windows and several different computer does not allow me to exceed 120in x 120 in. I can change my artboard size manually (shift+o) and drag the corners to 227inches but the number on the right upper corner is stuck on 120 inches. So what is the maximum size that I can work in Illustrator? If it is 227in why can't I make an Artboard bigger than 120 inches? And to avoid more confusion what is the canvas and what is the art board?
    Thank you

    mus,
    When things become seriously weird, as in your case, it may be worth trying the list (you have been through 1) and 2) already, and I would suggest your skipping 3) and 5), which leaves 4) and 6).
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • What is the maximum Artboard size of CS4?

    We currently use CS3 in our Art Dept at the sign company I work for. Sometimes designing/layout for some projects can be a pain when they go beyond the max artboard size constraint in CS3. This is especially true in my dept which does all the large format digital printing. I find myself having to switch back and forth between some of my sign software, which has almost limitless area for design and layout. Not that we can't work in scales but life would be so much easier if we could do things in full scale. Now to the point, does CS4 have larger artboard size than CS3?

    Larry, I don't think you know what is meant by "working in scales" or otherwise you would not have made such an odd comment. I don't really feel like defining it here, but suffice to say that many things do not scale linearly in a program like AI that is not designed for anything other than 1:1 layout. Many effects don't scale, for example, even if you check the box. Then there is problem of having to remember to do a mathematical action on every line weight, width, height, font size, font leading, font spacing and so on. Fonts do not always scale linearly either; often the text flow changes. You only have a to miss one math step to have a ruined output. The printer has to take the extra step, too, on the production side. With a program that allows working in scale you just draw at full size and all of that is taken care of automatically.

  • Illustrator - Maximum allowed size of variable library xml file loaded from variables palette?

    Hi-
    One question I can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere – any idea on what the maximum size xml file one can use when making data driven graphics in Illustrator?
    I can successfully batch when I load a single variable library with about 100 datasets at one time but anything much larger than that in the same xml format gives me a “the incoming variable library is invalid” error. Elsewhere on this discussion forum I have seen answers say there is no limit to the size of the XML file. (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/647934). But my experience with Illustrator CS5 says otherwise.
    I have thousands I need to create. Any help would be most appreciated.
    1. If there is a maximum size either in file size, number of datasets, or number of variables/values, please share what the limit is.
    2. I still need to create thousands of the final document I am creating - if the limit is close to 100 and I need to create many thousands - any suggestions on either scripting or other methods to get this done?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    yey!! now we know 1,000 is not the limit. Tested wiht 2 variables, 1122 data sets.

  • Illustrator Artboard Size Restrictions

    I have a project where I need to need a huge artboard bigger than the default size illustrator gives you.
    We are designing huge custom maps for a client and also use some illustrator map plugins which we use to do some extra stuff, but we can only work within the artboard.
    Is there any way round this, to increase the artboard size?  This is going to cause us a huge problem if we cant.
    It is not a typical project where I can export into everything into photoshop and scale or print to scale as its a map and we need to do all the work within illustrator to size,
    Please advise
    Thanks in advance

    I really need to have an unlimited artboard.  I have made it the maximum size, but really need to have it about 6 times the size.
    I cant understand why illustrator would restrict you too 227 inches.  Its a massive issue for us on this big project we are working on.
    Is there any plans to increase the artboard past this or ways round this?  I have seen lots of others request this feature and other vector sofware I have seen have unlimited artboard sizes

  • Problem with page size using Illustrator CS5

    I am using Adobe Illustrator CS5. I have created a multi-layered document that is 8.5 x 11 inches. In looking at the document on the screen, it looks like the proper size, and if I were to print it out, it looks correct. However, when I export it as a TIF file, the size of the document has changed to be much wider than 8.5 inches. What is the problem?

    This is a bit off topic, but if you are sending this to a commercial printer, a PDF would be better. If you need to send a tiff for some reason, don't forget to include the bleed.

  • Illustrator CS5 - Cannot make custom size when "printing" a PostScript file

    Hi all,
    I've recently picked up Illustrator CS5, and while this year's model sure is lovely, I'm having an issue when I save a file (or print) as a PostScript file. My aim is to convert the file to a PDF using Distiller and in the Print dialogue box, the PPD field in past versions says something along the lines of Adobe PDF 8.0. In CS5, I do not have the option to select that from the PPD drop down menu (Nor can I find the file to add to the list). Additionally, I can't make a 'custom sized pdf,' only preset paper sizes. I've had to resort to opening my files in CS3 to convert them to PostScript files. I forsee this becoming a problem once I start diving into some of Illustrator CS5's new features.
    I get the feeling the program didn't install with an Adobe PDF plug-in and I can't seem to find a substitute online that isn't from 1999 (!). Is there a way to get that plug-in file that my copy of CS3 is using into my CS5?
    I'm on a Mac by the way, version 10.6.

    I feel your frustration!
    I ran all updates and it did nothing because I was still on an older version of Acrobat. Once I installed Acrobat 9, restarted illustrator, I had all of the PDF options avaliable to me found in the link that fuzzydisco design provided me:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html
    Having Acrobat 9 seemed to be the essential missing component to me. If you do have Acrobat 9 already, and its not working, then thats a problem I don't know how to fix unfortunately!

  • Duplicate artboard with items in bleed area Illustrator CS5

    I have an Illustrator CS5 file for business cards imposed 6 up, with double trims marks in bleed area only (not on artboard).
    When artboard is duplicated, anything in the bleed area only doesn't duplicate too. InDesign can do it. Is there a way in Illustrator?

    I think I need to clarify what I'm after.
    I have extra crop marks (not bleed marks) because the cards are imposed 6 up.
    So I need the extra crop marks plus the automatic corner crop marks.
    These are placed on the bleed area only, so they will be cut off when printing is finished.
    When the artboard is duplicated, anything on the bleed area only (ie the extra crop marks) are not duplicated too.
    InDesign duplicates pages and bleed items no problem. Even Freehand can do it.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS5 File sizes are huge!

    Try this:
    open a new Illustrator document
    create a simple box, black stroke, white fill
    save the file
    you're looking at something like 1 Mb for these 4 anchor points and the fill and stroke definition!
    now, back in Illustrator, downsave to Illustrator 3 format
    file size is in around 6Kb - much better!
    Okay, I know we can disable ICC profile embedding, PDF compatibility etc, but none of that even comes remotely close to the "correct" file size of < 10Kb.
    C'mon Adobe, what are you putting in that CS5 file that's so darned important? This isn't a complex illustration with gradient masks, 3D transforms and thousands of points.
    I get it, everyone has terrabyte drives and high-speed internet. Is that an excuse to make really inefficient file formats?

    hmmmm......
    As Monika pointed out... deleting the defualt library items will make files sizes drastically smaller.
    I'd guess that version 3, since it lacked the ability to work in preview mode, didn't save file previews with the file either... that could easily account for 50kb.

  • Illustrator CC: how do I save my svg with artboard size?

    It looks right when I open it in Illustrator, but in finder is still letter size.

    In the SVG options untick the responsive option.

  • Any way to get Illustrator CS5 to display full screen mode like Photoshop?

    Is there any way to get Illustrator's screen modes to behave like Photoshop's screen modes?
    One of the things I like most about Photoshop is the way it toggles from standard screen mode to "full screen with menu bar" to just "full screen".
    For example, in Photoshop's standard mode, the window is no bigger than the size of the canvas. Why can't Illustrator do that?
    And, is there anyway to get Illustrator CS5 to display the full screen mode where the background outside the artboard or canvas is black instead of white. Working in Illustrator for long hours, it would much easier on my eyes if the surrounding background could be black like in Photoshop.
    Thanks very much in advance for any help,
    - Nick

    At the bottom of the Tool bar is a toggle button (F) which will change the Screen Mode.

  • Why does CS6 no longer export images out at their boundary/artboard size? Am I missing something?

    I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS6, and suddenly clients have been remarking that the file sizes are wrong or there's "a ton of white space around the logo." I checked it out, and sure enough, it appears that whenever I export a file, it does not crop it to the image boundary like it used to, even if I had manually adjusted the artboard to fit closely around it. After a bit of trial and error, I discovered that I have to click "Use Artboards" on the Export dialog each time. The super annoying part is that it doesn't STAY checked, AND it adds a number to the end of the file name. So I often forget to check it (not used to the extra step in workflow), and if I make a modification to the file, I can't just export over the previous version. It requires me to export it, go find it in finder, and manually delete the extra number off the file name. Ugh! The extra steps are adding way too much time when I'm saving out many files. I'm about ready to go back to my previous version just from this alone.
    Help! Am I totally missing something? Is there an easier way to do this? It seems like the addition of this feature would only cause extra problems...

    I did a quick test of this, and my CS6 Ai does indeed export to the exact size of the artboard, even if there are elements outside this boundary. Imo, this is an improvement over earlier versions: if you had some art hanging over the artboard edge in CS5, the export size would be larger than the artboard, to include even hidden paths. But CS6 is an improvement in this regard. Yes, it would be nice if your choice of "use artboard" was remembered or a choice in the prefs, but this is a small inconvenience, imo. Regarding the addition of -01, etc. to each successive export, why not just send the latest export to your client? You can delete the earlier versions later.
    Another plus: if you run in 64-bit, CS5 is slow on opening each file, which is thankfully not so with CS6.

  • Multiple page PDF in Illustrator CS5

    I have two pages in Illustrator and I want to create a 2 page PDF file. In CS3 there was a multiple page PDF  selection I could make in the save dialogue box of my Illustrator file. That feature is not there in Illustrator CS5. Is it possible to do this??
    Thanks in advance

    I might need a bit more info, I don't use "art boards" I use an art board and
    create multi pages within that one artboard. So, I would create several art boards then save as a pdf?
    Seems more complicated then simply clicking an option. I will try it though,
    Thank you.
    sarah
    Not really...just think of it as Page=Artboard. So,
    I. If you're creating a new file to save as a multi-page PDF, in the new file dialogue choose the number of Artboards to equal the number of pages. If unsure at the outset, just choose a sufficient number... you can always add or delete later. Give the Artboard/s the size of the page you want... eg A4, A5, or custom, etc., etc. Create the matter of each page on that number artboard.
    II. If you're working with an existing file, then you already have the pages created on your single artboard. So:
    1. Just resize the artboard to the output size
    2. Move all matter of page one to that
    3 Create new artboards (2, 3, 4, etc) and just move all mater corresponding to the already created pages 2, 3, 4, etc. to the respective artboards...

  • Script for making an object the artboard size.

    I am looking for some help on trying to make an object the exact size of the artboard.  This is something I do on a daily basis for several different reasons and it would be very helpful if this can happen automatically for whatever size the artboard may be.  As I understand it the only way is with a script but I have no experience with making illustrator scripts, im definately no programmer.  I have set up quickkeys in the past to copy from the artboard inputs when you are on the artboard tool but these round to the nearest .01 and this is not accurate enough for what I am working with.  Also if I do this with multiple pages open illustrator is very slow to respond to the artboard tool.  If anyone has any idea where to start or has seen other such scripts I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.
    Below is a script that I saw on here that I believe may contain what I need but now knowing programming I have no idea where to start on editing.  All I need is the part where an object is placed on the artboard that is the exact same size as the artboard.  If anyone can advise on editing I would greatly apprecaite it.
    #target illustrator
    function main() {
         if (app.documents.length == 0) {
              alert('Open a document before running this script');
              return; // Stop script here no doc open…
         } else {

                        tcCol.colorType = ColorModel.SPOT;
                        var tc = new SpotColor();
                        tc.spot = tcCol;
                        padBox.fillColor = tc;
                        padBox.move(docRef, ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND);
                        artboards[0].artboardRect = (padBox.visibleBounds);

         newCMYK.black = k;

    Thanks to CarlosCanto for the original script, it was very a very helpful starting point to optimize one of our workflows. We customized it a bit to maintain the aspect ratio (just takes the greater of the width / height and scales proportionally to the artboard size), and also center up the object in the middle of the artboard once scaling is complete. I hope it is helpful to someone:

    //  script.description = resizes selected object to fit exactly to Active Artboard Bounds;
    //  script.required = select ONE object before running; CS4 & CS5 Only.
    //  script.parent = carlos canto // 01/25/12;
    //  script.elegant = false;
    var idoc = app.activeDocument;
    selec = idoc.selection;
    if (selec.length==1)
            // get document bounds
            var docw = idoc.width;
            var doch = idoc.height;
            var activeAB = idoc.artboards[idoc.artboards.getActiveArtboardIndex()]; // get active AB

  • Illustrator CS5 Changing dot lpi and angle dialog box not opening

    Hello! I am having trouble with Illustrator CS5 changing the dot lpi and angle. I have my problem typed out below the image. Please help if you can! Thank you!

    You could also save yourself a lot of work by creating an ink template .ait with all of the angle/frequency values preset.
    1) Simply create a new document, size the artboard to your typical size and create a series of color chips (squares) each colored with one of your typical inks. It looks like you're doing t-shirt seps so you probably have about 20 or so inks you use all the time.
    2) Go into the print settings and set all of their angle and frequency values and click done.
    3) Choose File->Save As Template (you can delete the color chips if you want at this point, the swatches will remain)
    Now whenever you start a new document, choose File -> New From Template
    Any new artwork you create can be colored with the existing swatches and you'll find the angle / frequency settings are already set.
    Any forum posts links send to my twitter @ask_illustrator will be answered at the forum and via twitter.
