Illustrator CS5 - Save for Web

Hi,
In Illustrator CS4 when I create a graphic on my artboard and choose Save for Web, the 'export area' is trimmed to fit the artwork exactly.
After upgrading to CS5, this no longer happens and I have to adjust the size of the artboard manually before using Save for Web.
Is there a preference somewhere that changes this behaviour or is this new & expected?
cheers,
kevin

Hi Jacob,
Yes this is still possible - but still an extra couple of steps vs just hitting Command+Option+Shift+S
I can't find a specific preference for this in CS4 - yet I'm still able to Save for Web and get trimmed art (I just reconfirmed).
Interesting & annoying...
It just occurred to me that I could create a custom keyboard shortcut -  so I assigned Command+Option+Shift+1 to Object->Artboards->Fit To Selected Art
So now 2 key combos give me the same result.
cheers

  • Saving Sliced files in Illustrator CS6 like it was in CS5 "Save for web and devices" gone?

    Hello,
I used to save all my slices in CS5 and it would give me the option to save for web and devices, then when I was in there it would let me choose the option at the bottom Other... then I could go in and save it as a html and images and then it would automatically make div's for me when I brought it in to dreamweaver.  Where did this option go in CS6?  Can someone help I am on a big deadline, and I lost all my work transfering it back into cs5 to try it there like I used to.  Attached is a .png to show what I mean.
    Thank you,
    DariusB
These options are not here in CS6 and I cant find it.  I would really appreciate the help.
    Thanks again.

    Hi,
There have been some other changes too - here is the link to the article that describes the changes: http://blogs.adobe.com/ivandavid/illustrator_cs6_save_for_web/.

  • CS5 save for web bug with slices 1 png, the rest gif

Do me good forum, this is my first post from 112 degree AZ.
I'm trying to "save for web" slices in illustrator cs5. I optimize the images to transparent .png in the sidebar in the save for web dialog box. Then I click save. And I do the "user slices" option in the NEXT dialog (hello complicated process, but it makes sense to me). 5 slices should be output. 5 are. But only one is a png. The rest are gif files. And not transparent.
That makes me to throw an anvil through the floor of the USS(R) Adobe.
But rather than going through such extreme measures, I'd figure I'd post first.
I guess in the time I researched and wrote this post, I could have saved each individual slice with the proper optimization settings, but what fun would that be? And maybe I'm just plain missing somthing and someone will say, hey "footheadleg" your a total moron. The checkbox to save ALL the slices for your desired setting is at blah blah blah.
Do it. Shame me. And then, my problem will be fixed at last. MUwhwhwhwahahahaa.
FREE GIFT: cmd+shift+d changes illustrators white artboard to transparent pixels. I learned that becasue I thought maybe I had a white layer showing on accident. I didn't. That's because I'm perfect. Perfectly human.

Footheadleg, you have so much to learn, and so little time. Let me teach you my ways. Though while on Illustrator's main canvas it may seem that you can change settings of each slice, you can't. I know, there are little icons top left of each image, one looks like an email symbol, and it would seem you could just email the slice to a friend.
Pretty soon you'll be able to "Like" the slice on Facebook. Or post it to your del.i.cious account. Or tweet it. Or 17,000 other VERY VALUABLE shares. But Footheadleg, these symbols mean nothing to you, except that they are slices.
HOWEVER, when in "save for web" mode, you can in fact change the settings of each slice. Here's what you do. Press k. (slice tool selector thingie) then hop over to the sidebar and click on the settings you want. Do this for EACH slice. I know, it would seem easier if there was a checkbox that said "apply to all slices," but why make things easy?
Plus, Illustrator is a rad program, so don't knock it, unless you can design something better. And you can't. So get over yourself and enjoy the pain
    Yours truly,
    Yourself.

  • [CS5][Save for Web][Anti-aliasing] Fine lines in exported PSD with adjustment layers

    Hello,
You can reproduce the bug this way:
    - link a PSD with a adjustment (Levels, Brightness/Contrast) layer in your AI file
    - Save for Web, with AA for Art (not text) selected
In the exported image there will be artefacts, white lines usually.
Flattening the PSD or deleting the adjustment layers will solve the problem and anti-aliasing will be applied correctly.
I used CMYK/RGB settings, FOGRA39/Adobe RGB 1998 for all the files involved.

    Hi,
I am experiencing this same problem of pixelated gifs when I use the "save for web" dialog from Illustrator, but this solution has not worked for me. I have tried the trick of using type-optimized anti-aliasing, but it doesn't change the output at all. I've done this from within the "Image size" tab as well as through Effect>Rasterize>Options)Anti-aliasing: Type Optimized. My image is a logo made entirely from text, although for some of it I used "outline path", so I'm not sure if it still qualifies as text...I'm a newbie at this stuff, so the technical details are still quite opaque to me.
Does anyone know of a solution to this that does not require me to add Photoshop to my workflow?
    I'm using Illustrator in CS5, version 15.0.2.
    Thanks in advance
    Jonathan

  • How do I USE the slices I generate in Illustrator from "Save for Web"?

I am having trouble understanding slices. I want to save a raster graphic from Illustrator that takes advantage of "slices" to put hyperlinks to certain labels. I am working on a map with about 20 links to a website describing recreation sites shown on the map.
I am able to do this by bringing my map as a graphic into InDesign, and setting up links to text or picture boxes there. I can export an interactive PDF of the map, and the PDF has live links.
but the client's web host can't post the PDF with active links. (client would have to link from a static image to a copy of the PDF on a separate website). We may do this as an interim measure.
So I'd like to go back and figure out how to use slices in Illustrator to do the same thing. I've seen web pages that have a series of sliced-up graphics; I wouldn't wish that on anyone but it's the solution I want to get to.
Illustrator tutorials and help describe how to set up slices, how to type in links in the "slice options" dialogue box (in objects/slices... pulldown menu). And describe how to "save for web" to generate JPEGs or GIFs of the individual slices.
My available options in AI CC 2014 (I checked in CS6 too) are to save the slices as images. (Helpful articles which say to save as HTML and Images...aren't helpful if I don't have that option).
I get a folder called images, that contains about 74 sliced JPEGs of various sizes and shapes. I don't see, nor see an option where I can ask to make...a file that pulls all these together into a single image, with clickable links. There's no HTML file (or way to create one that I can see).
What am I missing? What application would I use to toss this folder's contents together. Or how would I create the HTML or envelope file within Illustrator?
I have entered URLs for links in three or four different places but haven't found a way to export them in such a way that they are actually useful.
    Thanks for your help.
    Ben PEase

Thanks, I am a print guy, mostly. I've almost figured out CSS for my did-it-myself website, so buttons, actions, slices, etc. are new angles for me.  I am hip to the general concept that Adobe likes certain applications to do certain things. It was certainly easier to set up links from InDesign.
In what application would you suggest I DO foolishly create my interactions (raster graphic with multiple links? Does it work any better in Photoshop?  The client's web host does the web design (some sort of template thing)  so I don't believe I have the option of drawing hot-spots like is (was?) possible in Dreamweaver.
(That may be a question for the web host).
One of the problems with "discontinuing this functionality" is there are about half a dozen how-to guides online that suggest it is still possible to kluge a solution in AI (sometimes in older versions) and it's hard to tell well-executed funtionality from abandoned functionality since Adobe hides instructions in multiple, random dialogue boxes, and left so many of the pieces strewn about the current versions of AI.... How would we really know?  But I am not all that surprised they did.

  • Photoshop cs5 + Save For Web appends file names

    Hey everyone :
Anyone know of a fix or a preference i can set? Hopefully, the response isn't "Can't do that anymore".
    Example file name/structure:
    Filename_partof-filename.version-01.00.psd
    Issue (save for web):
    CS3 - Filename_partof-filename.version-01.00.jpg
    CS5 - Filename_partof-filename.jpg
Using a period as part of the file name was never a problem before CS5/5.5. Having to re-type half the file name in the SaveForWeb dialog is aggreviating/annoying to say the least. I know I can use hypens and underscores, etc but after using photoshop since v3 and using periods as part of my naming convention for 15 years, ...like I said, it's just an annoyance.
    Anyone come across this? Suggestions?
    Thanks tons,
    Greg

    Adobe Photoshop Version: 12.0.4 (12.0.4x20110407 [20110407.r.1265 2011/04/07:02:00:00 cutoff; r branch]) x64
...yep, everything up to date (more or less).
This isn't a recent CS5 issue but a CS5 issue from the day it was released...I just got aggreviated enough today with it to come here and see if I could find an answer. It's definitely a SaveForWeb issue and not SaveAs.
Here's a similar post from back in March 2011...http://forums.adobe.com/message/3509172#3509172
    Just to be clear...
    - Open new/old PS file
    - Save with name.name.v.01.psd
    - Quit PS
    - Re-open file
    - SaveForWeb
...if you're able to save it out with the file name in tact, I have no idea how.
I've tried 4 different CS5 Photoshops and they all truncate the name after the first period.

  • Illustrator CS2 "Save for Web" not functioning properly.

    Illustrator CS2, OS X 10.4.11.
I am creating graphics for the Web with Illustrator CS2. When I go to Save for Web, the Save for Web window opens properly but the original graphics and type (even though the type is converted to outlines), become pixelated therefore my Web images are pixelated.
Attached is an example of a jpeg saved at maximum 100 quality.
I am not umderstanding why my originals become pixelated when doing Save for Web. It used to work until yesterday.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Can anyone help?
Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

    Mom,
I figured there's nothing wrong with my native file as a co-worker did the same and Save for Web worked. So why is it that when I do Save for Web, the native file pixelates when previewing the "original"?
That's what I can't figure out. One minute it worked fine, the next... bang!
That, and gprobst also being save correctly, imply that there is something wrong with your preferences.
No time to wait for the server. Here is an extract of the most important part:
    THE CURE:
Up to Illustrator 10, almost all the preference settings were included in the  aiprefs file, and almost all issues with corrupted settings could be solved by  deleting or moving it; in some rare cases, moving or deleting the folder holding  the settings was required.
From Illustrator CS on, the preference settings have been spread over a  number of files/subfolders so in many cases deleting the aiprefs file is not  enough: the easy solution is to move the whole folder rather than trying to  figure out which file(s) may be corrupted; just deleting the folder without  moving it first has proved fruitless in some cases.
Therefore, the cure all consists of the following steps:
    1. Close Illustrator.
    2. Make a Windows search including hidden files and  folders and including subfolders for the  folder holding the preference files; the name of the folder depends on the  Illustrator version, and the position of the folder depends on the OS version.  There is one folder for each version and for each user so it is important to  find the relevant one.
Up to version 10, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator  [X],
From version CS on, the name of the folder is Adobe  Illustrator [X] Settings.
[X] is the version number; as standalone versions, CS (Creative Suite) is  called 11, CS2 is called 12, and CS3 is called 13, but the version numbers with  CS are used in the folder name.
    3. Either:
    a) Create a subfolder and move all the contents into it; or
    b) Move  the whole folder to the Desktop.
With both you may recover the contents of the folder by moving it back if the  issue is not solved and get your preference settings back.
    a) requires creation of the subfolder, but it makes recovery easier,  especially if you create a shortcut to the preference settings folder, and you  can skip the search if/when corruption occurs again.
You may delete the folder/contents subsequently.
    4. If you have Windows Vista, restart Windows. If not, continue  to 5 without delay.
    5. Restart Illustrator, and see whether the issue is  solved.

  • CS5 Save for Web and Devices problem

I recently installed CS5 and now I cannot save for Web and Devices.  A pop up error window appears saying "A write permissions error has occurred".  Any suggestions to make it possible to save for Web and Devices would be appreciated.
Also, when I exit Photoshop CS5, yet another pop up window appears and reads, "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges.  Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders'.  Again, any suggestions as to what this message is about and how to make PS close as it did with CS4 would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    E

    Try this first:
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Macintosh HD > Repair Disk Permissions
Also make sure your not saving to a removable hard drive that is NTFS. If you can drag files into the drive its the right type of drive to use and there shouldn't be a problem.
Apart from that all i can say is to restart your Mac and make sure all the adobe updaters are up to date
    Hope that helps

  • CS5 ''Save For Web & Devices'' Help

    Hello
This is my 1st post on this forum, Hope its in the proper place
When i'm finished processing images on CS5 i click on ''Save For Web & Devices'' to save it & also to remove the EXIF image info, As of late though it has not been removing the info from the image when i click save. Anyone had any issues with this before, Any help on this issue would be great
    Thank you

EXIF is a file format used by digital cameras to store metadata associated with an image.
This metadata can be any of several things:
    date/time
    f-stop
    shutter speed
    camera make/model
    lens make/model
    GPS location
Some photo libraries (such as Flikr) will display the EXIF data alongside the photo.

  • PS CS5 Save for Web and Devices reports "The operation could not be completed"  ?

I teach in a lab of 27 computers, 110 students and part of the curriculum is teaching students to "Save for Web and Devices" this year for some strange reason none of my students can access "Save for Web and Devices"  they get the error message "The operation could not be completed-A write permissions error has occured."
It has stumped our district top network support guru.
We are running PS CS5 12.0.4
He tried this posted fix but it did not work
    http://involution.com/2010/06/13/adobe-photoshop-cs5-write-perimissions-error-on-snow-leop ard/
It worked once last Friday but today it failed, I'm getting very nervous about being able to prepare my students for the ACA exam without this function.
In a discussion forum they suggested "zipping and deleting" the save for web preferences, I tried that.  Shut down Photoshop reopened it and that did not work.
I am at a loss.  Seems like a bug.
    Any ideas.
We are using iMacs running  Mac OS X  10.5.8

The error message may not simply address the location to where the students will save a single file. The error likely applies to the temporary location where the various optimized versions might be automatically saved as you preview the image as JPG/PNG/GIF. I would wager that you would not see this error when you are logged into one of the students' computers as an admin.

  • How to fit photoshop CS5 'Save for web' window to Macbook Air 11"

I have tried Photoshop CS5 on Macbook Air 11", however I realized that the 'Save for web' window which I always use is too big to fit into the 11" screen (The buttons kind of cut off at the bottom of the window). Anyone got any suggestion or solution for this? Thanks in advanced.

Thanks Gene. Yes, I wanted to be able to easily access my Dropbox folder from the Save for Web window. I originally had wanted to be able to add the Dropbox icon on the left where the other icons are for Network, Libraries, Recent Items, and Computer are located. However, it may not be possible to do so. However, the link that you gave me allowed me to create a new Library that linked to my Dropbox folder so it's doing the exact same thing that I had wanted I'm just having to click on Libraries first. I can live with that    Thanks for the help!
Nancy, it's okay. I've done it a million times too and I probably could have asked the question in a better way.  Thanks for the response!

  • Deleted default Photoshop CS5 Save for Web settings, but they return after a restart

How do I permanently delete the default Save for Web settings that come with Photoshop CS5? (Default Settings.iros, Background Image.iros, etc)
In CS4 you deleted them once, and they were gone. In CS5, if you delete them, they are recreated when you restart PS. Same goes for any Optimized Settings (GIF 32 Dithered.irs, JPEG Low.irs, etc), they simply can't be permanently removed, and I'm left scrolling through a long menu of things I'll never use.
I have no use for XHTML.iros, GIF 32 Dithered.irs, or any of these settings, just like I have no use for most of the stock presets in PS, why can't I customize these presets like I can customize everything else?

    BlowPurp wrote:

Yes, they are, how do I stop that?
I don't know that you can.
Ok, we have a way to save them, but not delete them, so what if I accidentally Save one I don't want? Or what if I Save one now, but later don't want it anymore. We're supposed to infer Adobe didn't intend us to ever Delete custom settings we Saved ourselves?!
I suppose there's an implication that you'll be given the defaults by Photoshop, but that anything you create yourself can be deleted by yourself.  I admit it's not a very clear interface.  For what it's worth, my own applications provide an explicit "Delete" capability, have defaults that don't manifest as actual files (and are always at the top of the list), and the app doesn't allow you to even try to delete the application-provided settings (Delete is grayed-out).  I thought the whole settings thing through and tried to make sure it was more clear than parts of the Photoshop interface:
    > Have you found some documentation from Adobe that states that you can effectively customize your installation by deleting these files?
    Yes, in the FAQ: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
Well, from what I can see that thread was written by someone other than an Adobe Employee, and it doesn't mention .iros files at all.
And what it seems to say is that you can reset your preferences to defaults (i.e., invoke auto-generation of a new prefs file) by deleting the old prefs file, which is what's happening for you.

  • CS5 Save for Web won't let me save to Windows volume

I have a Windows Server 2003 volume mounted through Services for Macintosh (AFP, not SMB, I'm pretty sure). Even though both the Mac and the Windows volume can independently handle filenames longer than 31 characters, because of SFM (I'm assuming) I have never been able to save directly out of any application to that Windows volume with a >31 char file name. This has never been a problem as I've kept my file names short.
Having just installed CS5, however, Save for Web isn't letting me save any file, no matter how short the name: "Names longer than 31 characters are not supported on the destination volume." I can Save For Web just fine to my desktop and Save As... to the Windows volume, but not Save for Web to the Windows volume.
The Save for Web is set to "Images Only" (not slices so it's only creating the one file).
    Any thoughts? Known issue?
    thanks.

That might be part of what is going on (and doesn't look a thing like our internal filenames or anything else I recognize).
Probably it's something internal to the save dialog (NavagationServicesSavePanel), and it assumes that filesystems will be able to handle long names.
Again, using SMB to connect to the server may remove part of the restrictions.
CS3/4 was based on Carbon, and used different APIs for much of the file work.
CS5 moved to Cocoa, and has a new set of file APIs to deal with.

  • CS5 save for web color change problem

    Hi Forum
I've just started using PS CS5 on a new iMac, and I'm having some problems with save for web colors.  If I save an image (for example a shape with a solid color) then add it to a site I'm making then test in Safari, then take a screenshot with Grab, then open again in Photoshop, test the screenshot color with the eyedropper, the color value is slightly different to the original Photoshop file.
Previously in CS3, I had the color settings RGB workspace set to Monitor RGB display, and view > proof setup > Monitor RGB.  Then when saving for web I made sure convert to sRGB was unchecked.  This always worked and would give me the exact same colors in the browser as Photoshop.
I have tried the same settings now is CS5, plus a few other variations (like using view >proof setup > internet standard RGB) but it is just not working.
Does anyone know the correct setup to save for web in CS5 and get the same original colors?
    I'm saving them as jpegs.
I hope someone can help with this.  Thanks in advance

I'm really confused about this now.  My display profile in OSX settings is set to iMac.  I have some specific questions:
    - What should my color settings be in Photoshop?
    - What should the proof setup be set to?
    - What color profile should my documents be set to?
    - What are the correct options to select when I save to web?
I just want to able to save a jpeg image for web, and get the exact same colors as my original Photoshop file.  Please help!

In "Save for Web & Devices", the buttons are cut off at the bottom :\ is there a way to fix this? Here's a screenshot.
click to view full size. As you can see, they're pretty hard to click, though not impossible...

You probably need to use a higher screen resolution.
    1024x768 or higher.
You could also try to resize the save for web dialog by using
