Illustrator CS5 Using a stripe swatch

In CS5, how do I fill a mitered border (a rectangle with 45 degree angles at each end) on a quilt with a stripe swatch and have all 4 borders match? When I fill from the swatch, the stripe is jumbled - the lines are not in the same order as in the swatch.

The black stripes are, in fact, in the same order. Two things you are not understanding about Pattern Swatches which are causing the issue:
First, Pattern Swatches fill paths by tiling (stepping and repeating). What you are reading as a change in the order of the black stripes is actually the ending of one tile of the Pattern and the beginning of the adjacent tile.
Second, the tiling of Pattern Swatches does not start at the edges of the path it fills; it actually starts at the page origin, is masked, and is merely "revealed" by the path to which it is applied as a fill (which is why they so rapidly increase file size).
However, you can transform (rotate, move) a Pattern Fill independently from the path that it fills. So...
First, you do not need to define two different Pattern Swatches like the two small images to the right of the quilt. Just define one.
Assume you define the Pattern like the small image with the vertical stripes.
Apply it to the fill of the left verticle side of the quilt. It may--just by dumb luck--align correctly with the left edge of the trapezoid path; but in all likelihood it will not. So...
Press and hold the tilde key (~). Tap the left/right arrow keys to nudge the pattern left/right inside the path until it aligns properly.
Repeat the two previous steps for the right side of the quilt.
Apply the same Pattern Swatch to the fill of the top of the quilt. It will, of course, have the black stripes running vertically, because that's the way the Pattern Swatch is stored.
DoubleClick the Rotate tool. In the checkboxes of the resulting Rotate dialog, turn off Objects and turn on Patterns. Enter 90 for the rotation angle. Click OK. The black stripes now run horizontally as you want, but in all likelihood the stripes do not align correctly with the vertical sides at the mitred corners.
Press and hold the tilde key (~). Tap the up/down arrow keys to nudge the pattern up/down inside the path until it aligns properly.
Repeat the previous three steps for the bottom edge of the quilt, except rotate the fill -90 (or 270) degrees this time.

You should be able to input any size you want into both fields. If not reinstall acrobat or manually assign a correct PPD. System Preferences >>Print & Fax >> Adobe PDF >> Options >> Driver

Anyone know this error message: Adobe Illustrator CS5 15.0.1 Update Installation failed. Error Co

Very new and very green to illustrator.
Have used only once or twice since i bought it.
Unfortunately when i need to use it now - it crashes
upon starting up.
I received the following error message:

Installation failed. Error Code: U44M2P7
Haven't a clue what to do!
Any help and direction would be most appreciated.

Updates can fail due to any number of system issue. They are more prone to failing if you alter the application in any way. On the Macintosh, popular applications such as Monoligual will remove application package contents and therefore cause updates to fail.
The easiest solution is to uninstall Illustrator CS5 using the uninstaller and then reinstall Illustrator CS5, then immediatlly run the 15.0.1 update.

You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

Color and Swatches palette behaviour in Illustrator CS5

I only use the Swatches palette, but when I click the Tools palette color chips to select between stroke and fill, Illustrator brings up the Color palette by default; I have to go back and re-open the swatches palette - quite tedious.
Is there any way to change this behaviour?
I haven't been able to find anything useful in the Help or via Google - probably because I can't describe the issue in a few words!

Do you still have the original installer dvd's? If so run Apple Hardware Test. Also since you recently added more memory also run Rember (a GUI layer on top or memtest). I wouldn't trust TechTool for reliable memory tests.
The only software I've added (on Monday and the problem started Monday) was a Seagate Diagnostic program to test some external USB Seagate GoFlex archive drives-- these are not always connected or mounted to the Mac Pro. When I started experiencing problems-- and it crashed or hung several times on Monday-- I trashed the Seagate Diagnostic program.
Hmm, coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.
If the Seagate Diagnostic program was the one I found here you probably did not remove all of it. Specifically the kext's it installs.

If they are there move them to the trash (proably need your admin password to allow it) and reboot.
If the Seagate Diagnostic program is not the one I found. The do the following in terminal and post the results:

If you do not own a license for CS5 there is not much you can do to get it thru Adobe. They only sell current versions of their software (CS6 or Creative Cloud). You would need to find a third party vendor and take your chances with them.

How do I create or export a logo in Illustrator CS5 with an alpha channel to use in Final Cut Pro 6?

To anyone who can help:
I have created a logo using Illustrator CS5 and need to import it into a video sequence in Final Cut Pro 6. The logo has a transparent background. It seems FCP 6 will import both native .ai files as well as .tiff files, but when I open them in FCP 6, the alpha channel (transparent background) is no longer there; there is just the logo over a white background. Is there a setting or step I am missing?

I have to insert AI images into Final Cut Pro and Motion quite frequently.
The most effective way I've found to get an AI image into Final Cut is to:
1. Select/copy all the objects in the AI doc.
2. Create a new file with a transparent background in Photoshop and paste.
3. Merge the layers and make sure the mode is RGB.
4. Save out as a .PNG or .PSD.
5. Drag the result into Final Cut (or Motion).
6. Resize and position the result to taste.
Attempting to export directly from AI to .PSD or .PNG is a wasted effort and the results may not even be recognized by Final Cut.
Yes, it requires Photoshop and it is a few extra steps...but it works like a charm.
Additionally, when creating a new file in Photoshop, you may want to initially set its size to match the aspect ratio of your video. For example, if you're making an HD video, you might set the size to 1280x720 and position the AI elements where they are supposed to be in frame. You can set the AI elements in accurately by cutting and pasting a frame from your video into Photoshop and positioning the AI elements in place on another layer above the video layer. Delete the video layer before saving out as a .PNG or .PSD and it will appear in Final Cut exactly where it should be.

Problem with page size using Illustrator CS5

I am using Adobe Illustrator CS5. I have created a multi-layered document that is 8.5 x 11 inches. In looking at the document on the screen, it looks like the proper size, and if I were to print it out, it looks correct. However, when I export it as a TIF file, the size of the document has changed to be much wider than 8.5 inches. What is the problem?

This is a bit off topic, but if you are sending this to a commercial printer, a PDF would be better. If you need to send a tiff for some reason, don't forget to include the bleed.

Illustrator CS5 won't open after using trial version of CC

I tried the CC version of Illustrator and once it expired, I am now unable to open any of my files from my previous CS5 version . Message

I can't turn on the Create PDF compatible file option. None of my files will open.

The Illustrator file format is not downwards compatible.
You would have needed to save the files to the CS5 version.

Problem using Illustrator CS5 and CC 2014 in same PC

I am developing some Illustrator scripts using VBScript, which should work on CS5, CS6 or CC 2014. When the scripts will be called, the user will pass, as command line argument, which Illustrator version they want to use. Accordingly I am instantiating the appropriate Illustrator scripting object by the following code:

This is working correctly in one system where CS5 and CC 2014 are both installed. However, in another similar system, where CS5 and CC 2014 are both installed, this is failing. There, always the CC 2014 version is being used, even when the user wants to use CS5. On inspection it is found that the issue is with registry entry of LocalServer32 subkey of the Illustrator.Application.CS5 automation object. There I see, the path of CC 2014 executable is stored, not that of CS5. The value is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 (32 Bit)\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe /automation. Hence, the statement CreateObject("Illustrator.Application.CS5") is actually starting the CC 2014 Illustrator version.
Does anyone know how this could have happened? Is this some installation behavior of CS5 or CC 2014, that can be controlled? In this machine CC 2014 was installed after CS5. Does CC 2014 change the registry settings of CS5, if it was installed? That seems very unlikely, as then how can one use both CS5 and CC 2014 in a system through scripts? It is possible that this is a one-off case where the registry entries have been "accidentally" changed. However, I would like to be sure.
I can re-install CS5 in this system where the issue is noted and probably the problem will go away. However, the scripts may be used in many different installations and I cannot possibly ask users to reinstall Illustrator everywhere. Moreover, this problem can occur sometimes in the future too.
Any suggestion regarding the cause and a possible full-proof solution will be highly appreciated.

With OS X, it automatically allocates RAM and it can't be allocated manually.
What model Mac do you have and what OS X version is it running. Your profile shows a PowerMac and OS 10.6.8. A PowerMac can't run OS 10.6.8. It's max OS is 10.5.x
How much RAM is installed in your Mac? You need to max out the RAM and close other open apps if you are having problems with Illustrator.
