Illustrator CS6 - hard to toggle layer lock/visibility

Just wondering if anyone else is finding it more difficult to toggle the layer lock/visibility in CS6 than in the earlier versions.
It seems that there's more padding around the lock/visibility icon, and you have to be really precise to click it... increasing the row size doesn't really make any difference, as the "padding" is still there. Wheres in the earlier versions clicking anywhere within the toggle box would enable/disable it.

Yes I've seen this. But it's not related to precision here. It's a matter of double-clicks. The toggles don't respond well when you click more than once in the same location. You may find if you click... click somewhere else... then click the original location again it works better. This seems to be true for not only the Layers Panel, but also the Appearance Panel.
I have filed this as a bug. Hopefully it gets looked into soon.

Layer/OCG Visibility based on Combo Box Selection

Hello,
I'm VERY new to javascript, so please bear with me. I have a combo box with multiple selections. For some selections, I would like a separate OCG layer to appear, and with other selections that same layer to disappear.
For example:
ComboBox1: A, B, C
Layer 1 default: hidden
A - toggle layer 1: hidden
B - toggle layer 2: hidden
C - toggle layer 3: visible
I have seen the javascripting involved turning layers on/off with buttons, but I'm having some difficultly with the combo box.

The code would be much the same as with buttons. Use the Validate event of the combo box to get the selected value (event.value) and show/hide the appropriate OCGs. Illustrator CS6 locks up frequently

I am a cartographer using an Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM. My system has a 1TB hard drive (not SSD).and an NVIDIA GEOFORCE 745M.
When I twirl-down a layer, or try something very simple such as selecting a feature either in the layers panel or on the artboard, Illustrator CS6 temporarily locks up and shows the spinning wheel. This occurs even after changing several settings to include: layers panel options (no thumbnails), unchecking 'Overprint Previw,' and even using 'Outline' view.
The problem becomes much worse when knockouts are enabled.
Anyone have any ideas on how to improve Ai CS6 performance? Or do I need CC2014? Thanks.

I have spent the last two or three days trying to do what you suggested. I uninstalled Adobe 6 from Windows. Some files that CS6 placed on my system during installation remained, including fonts and .dll files.
I had to abandon the Cleaner Tool you suggested because in one screen it allowed me to specify removing CS6 only, but on the following screen it only gave on option to remove ALL Adobe programs. I could not do that because I didn't have the serial number handy for CS3 in case I want to reinstall it at some point.
I tried to get technical help with the Cleaner Tool problem but no definitive help was available, so I reinstalled CS6 again without having the benefit of the Cleaner Tool. I tried to get the serial number for CS3 so I could use the Cleaner Tool but spent 2 wasted hours in chat. Even though I had a customer number, order number, order date, place of purchase, the email address used AND 16 digits of the serial number, in two hours the agent couldn't give me the serial number. After two hours I had nothing but instructions to wait another 20 minutes for a case number.
Illustrator CS6 is still trying to open some backups as Text and otherNone of the problems have been fixed. I have tried to open/use the .ai files in CS6 installed on another system and am getting the same result, so I don't think the software was damaged by the cleaner. The hard drive cleaner is well-known and I've run it many times without any problem to previous versions of Illustrator or any other programs.
When I ordered, the sale rep promised good technical support and gave me an 800 number, but after I paid the $2000, I learned that the 800 number she gave me doesn't support CS6 and hangs up on me. Adobe doesn't call it a current product even though they just sold it to me about 3 weeks ago.
Would appreciate any help you experts can offer. If I can't solve this, the last backup I can use was from June and I will have lost HUNDREDS of hours of work and assets that I cannot replace.

If you didn't have the opportunity to deactivate the installations then you should contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations for all the serial numbers involved.

Please follow these steps:
Open the “Task Manager” when the Adobe Illustrator CC crash window is displayed.
In the Task Manager window right-click on the name/string “Adobe Illustrator CC” and select the option “Create Dump File” in the context menu
It will display a dialog which says that it will create a file “Illustrato.dmp” in your “Temp” folder. Click on OK to create this. Wait for the action to get this completed.
Once the above file gets completed you can have this file by typing “%temp%” in your “Run” window (press “window button + r” on the keyboard). On clicking the enter key the TEMP folder can be opened.
Look there for the file name “Illustrator.dmp” and share it with us a dropbox link on [email protected]

Toggle layer visibility

Hello,
I need one keyboard shortcut that toggles visibility of one of layers.
I paint and need to toggle on and off one layer below (layer with a reference picture, not one i paint on). with a shortcut painting process will be not break as with case click at icon.
tried to make toggle layer visibility with actions unfortunately with no success.
it is possibility to toggle active layer visibility by add shortcut in keyboard shortcuts preferences but here it going not about active layer.
I have no experience with scripting.

For this to work as written there can only be one layer in the document named 'Ref' otherwise it will toggle the top most layer with that name.

Illustrator CS6 locks up when I choose File - New...

I have Illustrator CS6 on a Mac OSX 10.7.4. Every time I choose File - New... or press 'cmd n' it locks up and I get the dreaded spinning ball cursor. Any way to fix this?
Opening a file by double clicking on an ai file in finder is fine.

You did a Get Info on that folder and the Read/Write access is set to allow everyone access? Did you also check the parent folder (en_US) for the same access? Try going back up the line and allowing everyone access to the files and apply the same to all the enclosed files like this

Really need to be able to save back to the older versions, in order to output vector files on an older plotter. Running an older application of Mac sign from Softeam, can't get in touch with them. Total pain to upgrade, been dumbing down for too many years.

Widget for toggling layer visibility

It would be very useful to have widget for creating a button which toggles on/off visibility of some Muse layer(s) on the page.
Possible application: show/hide some notes/help on the page etc.

Mouse problems with Illustrator CS6 and Mountain Lion

The mouse in Illustrator selects and deselects as it moves over buttons and cells:
1. In Graph data the cells the mouse passes over go dark grey if not already selected, then deselect if they are selected. This makes it very difficult to use the data cells.
2. In Layers window, where I may have 100s of layers, I want to hide one layer or more which are not necessarily adjacent to each other. Illustrator hides all of the layers it passes. It is very difficult to click and unclick the show/hide button (and also the lock button). Ditto with show or unlock toggle layer. I had to start up in Lion in which Illustrator does not have this problem in order to get a job finished in time.
Seems there needs to be a fix for Illustrator to work properly in Mountain Lion.
Has anyone found such a fix?

No I don't have Right-Zoom (don't know what it is), but I have the same problem with Apple's Track Pad, which I don't use much and I only use the inbuilt software.
I use Kensington Slim Blade and before that LogiTech's marble mouse and both need their software to work properly.
All of them work fine in Lion and earlier. Could it be that Adobe has overlooked some new aspect that’s in Mountain Lion which, in my case, needs to be fixed for Illustrator?

Outline Tool-Illustrator CS6

Whenever I apply the Outline Tool (CTL+Y) while tracing over an image in Illustrator CS6, the image over which I am tracing with the Blob Tool is not visible. Turning off the Outline Tool brings it back. What am I turning off to prevent viewing the layer below that I am tracing over. (I've tried applying reduced opacity without any success)

Double click on the thumbnail of the layer with your raster image in it and select "template" in the dialogue box.
Then make a new layer to do your tracing in.

I take it you have all layers visible at the same time. The rendering was just an (obviously irrelevant) example of what might eat time (if you make a layer visible, things like complicated blends and live effects (Drop Shadows or whatever) may take a bit of time to appear).
With that ruled out, some description of the artwork may (still) be useful.

How do I disable Illustrator (CS6) from recognising TIFF paths inside placed TIFF files?

Hi all,
I have recently output a job to print that was supplied .AI with a simple .TIFF image placed on an artboard at its desired crop.
After referring to the original TIFF file I have realised whilst inside illustrator my image suddenly has a clipping mask attached to it, and a lot of it is missing. (however in outline, illustrator only see's a single TIFF bounding box)
Looking more closely at the TIFF in Photoshop, i've found it has x3 paths inside it!)
Illustrator is picking these up and masking my photo. Is there a default function or process that can stop this from happening in the future, so it ignores any paths within the file?
It's concerning how many jobs may be ruined because of this auto feature.

haha, it's not an easy one to describe.
So when checking the TIFF initially, it is a flat locked image: (image below)
when placed into Illustrator CS2 and outputting a PDF, I get this correct result: (image below)
When placed into illustrator CS6 and output to PDF I get this incorrect result: (image below)

When looking more closely in photoshop at my TIFF, it has this inside of it: (image below)
However, in illustrator there is nothing I can release anywhere as it still treats it as a flat image: (image below)
