Illustrator CS6 - Live paint makes paint strokes thinner

Im fairly new with illustrator, when i try and use live paint by selecting the brush strokes then going object > live paint > make, it makes my strokes really thin and it is really annoying, is there any way of avoiding this?

This issue can be probably solved by expand the object before convert it into a live paint object.
From the illustrator guide:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/illustrator/cs/using/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cbc5f-6507a .html
if you try to convert an object that uses brushes or effects, the complex visual appearance is lost in the conversion to Live Paint. However, you can retain much of the appearance by first converting the objects to regular paths and then converting the resulting paths to Live Paint.

  • Illustrator CS6 - Live Paint Groups

How do I fill a face in a Live Paint Group with a pattern on a colored background?

I've already tried that and I can't make it work.  I can drag the swatch onto the artboard and apply a gray fill, no problem.  But when I drag or Alt-drag it back into the swatches panel the gray background is not preserved in the new or replacement swatch.
Double-clicking the pattern swatch and trying to edit it that way by adding a second fill via the appearance window doesn't work either.
Question: why, when I drag a pattern swatch onto the artboard, does the fill and stroke in the tools panel show no fill and a question mark respectively; whereas double-clicking the swatch shows the pattern as the fill and the stroke color as black?

  • Why is Illustrator's 'Live Paint' ruining my lines?? please help.

I am new to illustrator but i have managed to get around the basics of creating and coloring illustrations. The other day i created a nice image fine without any problems. But today, when i highlight my image and go to Object>Live Paint (so that i am able to use the live paint bucket tool and color the image). it just screws up the lines and makes it look weird.

    After Live Paint: http://s21.postimg.org/ywg20q9x3/safuqq.png
    Why is this happening?

You used thw width tool to create the lines?
Live paint won't work with anything else than plain strokes (or no strokes at all)
    What you can do:
    - expand the varibale width strokes
    - make a copy of the artwork (so you can keep the live variable strokes) and then live paint the copy

  • Illustrator CS6 Live Trace negative image

    Hello,
We have recently updated our office Adobe Creative Suite, and are now using Illustrator CS6 to clean-up hand drawn sketches.  When we run any sort of trace on a simple, black and white line drawing, the trace results in a negative image:  the white background turns black, and the outline of the sketch is white.  We have tried checking the "ignore white" box and several other settings changes.  Does anyone know how to fix this, or prevent it from happening?  Initially, for our first few times using the new suite this didn't happen:

Wow, that looks strange. Could you post one of the original sketches files?

  • Live Paint doesn't work on Complicated Objects?

I have never really figured out how to properly build an illustrator file in a way that it will fill properly so my only other option (that I know of) is to use Live Paint.  Unfortinately Live paint also wrecks all my line weights.  It also makes the object noneditable later down the road.  I found this out the hard way for a logo project at college and spent over 30 hours on it just trying to fiddle with the illustrator program, looking up tutorials that never seemed to work for me and nonstop frustration.
This time Live paint doesn't work at all. (I'm trying to paint in a more complicated object than a simple logo).  First off my object has gaps in it, and even when I click "Gap options" it doesn't appear to do anything and there are still gaps.  So I try to fill them in myself but this wrecks my line weights.  And finally Live paint appears to work but only on certain objects such as the eyes, the nose, annd the ears, yet it refuses to fill in the entire body of the animal I'm trying to colour in.  I drew this animal in illustrator with the pen tool and applied line weights with the line weight tool.  Yes there are numerous gaps in the image.
I have another project due really soon on a more complicated illustrator file and I can't even figure out how to colour it in properly!  Please help!  This is what it looks like as of now:
    http://aprilsilverwolf.deviantart.com/art/Dhole-Lineart-414792208
Only imagine it not in a pdf but an illustrator file because yes I have the original and yes it's vector.
Also I use Adobe illustrator CS6

I looked at your drawing and have a few suggestions:
As you have no doubt learned, Live Paint strokes cannot contain stroke profiles or other effects at the individual stroke level. There are 2 solutions:
    1. Set the stroke on the Live Paint object to a very small width, then add a stroke attribute to the LP object using the Appearance Panel. There, you can assign a global stroke that will effect any paths on the LP object that have any stroke applied.
    2. Assign no strokes to the LP Object. Instead, duplicate the LP object, release Live Paint and assign stroke attributes to the duplicated lines. I have found this provides better control of stroke attributes, making them independent of the Live Paint Object.
I agree, the "Gap Options" feature does not always work well. That's another reason I prefer to handle the lines and fills separately, so I can manually fill any gaps by extending the lines using the pencil or pen tool.

  • Why can't Illustrator's line segment tool make a stroke of .5 pt?

Why can't Illustrator's line segment tool make a stroke of .5 pt? When I create a line at either 90° or 180° I cannot make the stroke thinner than 1 pt., even if I create the line first and then try to change its stroke. When I create a line at any other angle I can make the line thickness whatever I want by changing its stroke thickness. What I want is to make line segments that are .25 or .5 pts, but the minimum Illustrator will do is 1 pt even if I select the line or rectangle and try to change it to .5 or .25 pt. This same problem exists with the rectangle tool when I create a rectangle oriented at either at 90° or 180°, but if I rotate that same rectangle to anything other than 90° or 180° I will then have the ability to change the thickness to less than 1 pt. Any ideas what's going on?

Well, this is good information, but it does not quite get me there. I get as far as {user}:Library:Application Support:Adobe:
but there is no Adobe Illustrator folder. Suggestions?
I want to suggest they add Hyphenation to that list. I never hyphenate anything, and I can't count the number of times I have had to uncheck the hyph box in InDesign and Illustrator. Can you point me to the appropriate suggestion box? Thx D

  • Big problem, Live Paint Bucket changing strokes

Hi all, so in the first picture you can see the finished line work. When I fill the face with a color in Live Paint, it changes the strokes and makes them appear jagged in varying widths, it's especially obvious on the eyes, ears, and hair - it looks like it is applying Pathfinder>Divide. I have the stroke set to nothing when I apply the fill, please help!

    how about this?
    1. duplicate the lineart and put it underneath the layer and lock the original
    2. convert the lineart into an outline stroke by going to Effect>Outline Stroke then Object>Expand Appearance
    3. Open Pathfinder Pallete and then select all and Unite/Add it.
    4. change everything to no stroke and no fill
    5. select all then convert it to live paint
    6. deselect the converted path and start using live paint bucket.
    7. after that expand it and ungroup so you can move the fill path. also you'll notice that it will remove all path you have been converted.
    reply if it works,

  • Illustrator crashes when moving objects in live paint group

    A little help here...
Illustrator CC keeps crashing whenever I try to move a path or an object in a live paint group. I've tried it on other computers, but they seem to work fine. It seemed to only affect my laptop, so I'm not sure what happened. Restarting and updating it doesn't seem to solve the problem.
Here are the technical specifications for my Macbook Pro:
    Mid-2009 Macbook Pro 15"
2.8 GHz model w/ SD card slot
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    Has Mavericks
    4 GB of RAM
Please help!!! My project is due the next week!
    Thanks,
    Michelle

I think I know the solution to the problem (for me anyway)!
I have been plagued by this CC problem for months with Illustrator, In Design and Photoshop. I even bought a new machine because of the stress it caused me, and not to mention the lost work hours!!!! But since buying the new machine and having it happen again, and again and again, I have ruled out all font, software, plugin conflicts - because there is nothing on my machine that was on the old one. All of my old files are on an external hard drive and I have had Illustrator CC crash several times with the hard drive ejected.  This is what leads me to think (in my case at least) that the machine/files/plugins are not the problem. Here's what has worked for me, and where I think my problem stems from:
CC membership allows you to run the Adobe applications on 2 machines, in most people's cases that's home and office. I have two machines; one for work with one set of preferences that my CC account was made with, and another machine at home that is shared and has an entirely different set of preferences.
When an Illustrator file is left open on my work machine (the machine that the CC account was created on) with a long period of inactivity (e.g. over a weekend) Illustrator CC on my home machine crashes constantly (as soon as I try to move an object it crashes). As soon as Illustrator CC is closed down on my work machine, Illustrator CC on my home machine is then fine! And then both machines will the run Illustrator CC again simultaneously until the work machine is left for another long period of inactivity (a couple of days). Then, when it is, my home machine crashes again.
I also noticed that each time Illustrator CC asked me to send a crash report from my home machine to Adobe it would pull the email from the preferences on my home machine, not the email that the CC account was made with (which is the email on my work machine). It could be that leaving Illustrator CC/any of the CC apps open and inactive for a couple of days causes some kind of 'time out' period on the account.
This could explain why Illustrator CC would work again on my home machine (briefly) when trashing the account preferences.
So to re-cap I have solved my seemingly inexplicable problem by making sure that Illustrator CC is not left open for long periods of inactivity (2 days seems to be the threshold) on one machine, if the account is being shared across two machines.
Please let me know if this A. makes sense and B. helps anyone.

  • Please help! - Illustrator CC - editing path messes up entire live paint drawing

Example of problem in this image:
    http://ccteardrop.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/dana-solomon-adobe-cc-problem.png
Basically, whenever I have a finished illustration, I go back and make a few tweaks to different paths. In previous versions of illustrator, this had never been a problem. If anything it would cause a small error I could quickly repair. In Illustrator CC, however, whenever I make a small change with the direct selection tool, it basically disrupts my entire live paint drawing. Any help would be great! Thanks so much!!!

Hi Mylenium, Thanks for responding. I was just reading this forum in an attempt to answer my own question:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5762116
Changing gap detection to "small gaps" helps slightly but the problem is still new in CC and has not been present in previous versions. Wondering if it is some kind of bug as the other forum suggests, or if there is some new setting/preference I'm missing or configuring incorrectly in CC.

  • Live paint seems to make lines thicker

I'm new to illustrator, and I'm having some issues with the live trace and live paint tools.
When I use live trace, my image looks exactly as it should. However, when I change the image to a live paint group and then begin to change some of the colors, the lines seems to get thicker.
Why does the image look okay after being traced, but changes once made into a live paint group?

    5) Click on one of the black lines in the image and change color to Pantone Black C
You haven't described at all what settings you used for the autotrace, or what kind of objects you have after expanding it. Are the black objects filled, stroked, or both?
Also, the LivePaint tool can apply Fills and/or Strokes, depending on how you set its options. Based on your description, you may be applying black strokes to the autotraced black-filled paths. That would, of course, result in "thickening" what you are calling the black lines.

  • Live Paint Bucket tool Missing in Illustrator CS5

The Live Paint Bucket tool does not appear in the tools palette in Illustrator CS5. I have looked at other threads which suggest removing the preferences file 'Adobe Illustrator CS5 settings'. I did this and it had no effect. There is no blank space in the palette where the button should be, it is just completely absent, like it was never installed (either that or its hidden somewhere- I'm quite new to Illustrator). However, I can still create a 'live paint group' using 'Objects-live paint-make' in the drop down menu at the top of the screen. it is just the button that is absent, so I can't colour the object. I'm not sure if it the button was ever there as I only installed the software a couple of weeks ago. I only needed it now. I have not yet tried re-installing Illustrator. This is really a last resort. I'm using Windows Vista if that helps.
    Any help is much appreciated.

The the Shape Builder TLive Paint Bucket tool lives together with the Shape Builder Tool and the Live Paint Selection Tool in one toolgroup. To reach either of them without using a shortcut simply press the tool shown and hold and you will see the other tools and can choose them. That's the method with all tools that have a small black arrow in the bottom righthand corner of its toolbutton., more tools hide in the same group.

  • Live Paint erases one of my strokes

I've built two different colored strokes around some text (inner layer is green, outer layer is red). When I convert this to the Live Paint Mode by clicking the letters with my Live Paint bucket, a warning comes up telling me certain things might be lost. I press okay, and the red outer layer of the text dissapears. I want that layer to stay though! I've attached pictures of this process. I'm new to this and would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you! -Sebastian

    Thank you Scott!
I think I understood what you are saying... but I found a different way of doing it. I now have two strokes going on on top of each other- One is just WIDER than the other. I've attached a picture displaying the effect I was looking for. This is where I'm at now... but my final step is to change the black color of some of the letters on the inside... For example: as you can see, i've highlighted a portion of the "M" that I want to change from black to white using the Live Color bucket. My only problem is that it is telling me that is already white... ???? Could I maybe export this as an image and change its colors that way? Is there another method to change those black letters on the inside to white?
