Illustrator default RGB black is gray

Group, I just got CS4 and I am working in RGB and when I hit D to set default colors the black is not black... It is a dark grey.  Basically the same if you take something that is black in a CMYK document and paste it into an RGB document.  The black becomes gray.  Can't figure out what color setting to change to set blacks as "Rich Black."  Under Edit - Preferences - Appearance of black, it is set to Rich Black.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure the OP is aware of what the "D" key does - hence his question.
The question refers to figuring out how to make the black that goes into the stroke swatch when you press "D" RGB 0,0,0 rather than RGB 35,31,32.
The answer is to change the colour inside the Black swatch. If you look at your Swatches palette, you will see that the fourth swatch in is Black. By default, Illustrator ships with this Black being equivalent to CMYK 0,0,0,100, which makes sense if you're working in CMYK a lot.
If you find yourself doing web work and you wish to change the default Black to RGB 0,0,0 just edit this swatch colour.
To do this on a one-off basis (you have to repeat this for each document), then just double-click the swatch in the Swatches palette and edit the colour. It's not a Global colour swatch by default, so this will NOT change any existing items in your document that have been filled with that colour. However, if you press "D" now on your keyboard, your default stroke will get set to RGB 0,0,0 black.
If you're doing this often, you'll want to set this up as your default colour going forward - every time you open a new document. To do this, you need to edit the default document profile. This process is outlined in Adobe KB article documented here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400732.html
But for convenience, I'm reposting the information (note these are an AI CS3 instructions, so be sure to check for your version):
To create a custom New Document Profile
To create a custom document profile in Illustrator CS3:
Open the New Document Profile file you want to customize in the New Document Profiles folder located in the below directories.
Windows: Documents and Settings\(User)\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings.
Mac OS: Users\(User)\Library\Application Support\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3
Delete any existing swatches, graphic styles, brushes, or symbols you dont want to retain.
Do any of the following:
Create any colors, patterns, and gradients you want, and save them as swatches. You can also import swatches using the Swatch Libraries command and then move the swatches you want in the Document Profile file into the default Swatches panel.
Save any graph designs that you want available in your files using the Graph Design dialog box.
Create any graphic styles you want and save them to the Graphic Styles panel.
Create any brushes you want and save them to the Brushes panel.
Create any symbols you want and save them to the Symbols panel.
Select the options you want as default settings from the following: View preferences (from the View menu), ruler origins, page origins, print settings (in the Print dialog box, File > Print), and actions.
Save the Document Profile file and restart Illustrator.

  • Illustrator Gradients Turning Black

Over the course of the day, 3 of us working in Illustrator found we were having the same problem at the same time. We are working on 3 separate computers, and it seems to happen no matter who created the file or who is trying to open it (we are on a network and frequently pass files back and forth).
We just upgraded to CS4. On a lot of the stuff we are working on, we are filling shapes and compound shapes with gradients. These are fresh, just-created files. When we close and save the file, and then open it again, those gradients will turn solid black (or gray if the was opacity was brought down) no matter what colors they were before...as if the gradient was never there. Our senior designer saved a file and opened it a second later, and things with gradients had turned black. ...So the files are perfect and print-ready when saved... and the thumbnails look correct in bridge... but when Illustrator opens it again, the fills where the gradients were are black. It doesn't seem to happen to simple filled retangles. Could there be something wrong with how our compound shapes are constructed that is causing the problem? What things should I try in order to troubleshoot this problem as quickly as possible?
    Thanks!!!!

I have several issues with Illustrator including gradients, but mine is slightly different.
I have prepared 24 attorney bios for a law firm using Illustrator CS4. They each have a blue gradated bar at the top. Each and every time I open these documents to make edits, I get a message about missing links and I have to replace them one by one, then when I click on the text to edit I get an error message and the text reflows. Additionally, the gradient in the pdfs I create (using the print quality default) are printing differently on my client's Xerox.
Although I originally created some of these documents in CS3, they now only open in CS4-possibly due to the fact that I had the trial version of CS4 on my iMac, They are all in CMYK using the same color space (sheetfed uncoated).  I made edits to 8 of the Illustrator files, saved them all using the same settings and sent them to my client. She said in 4 of the bios, the gradient is printing purple. I tried changing the settings, recreating them in CS3 and putting them into PS and saving as PDFs. But now they are all printing purple. And, no, she doesn't need to change a color cartridge on her Xerox.
I even sent both an approved pdf and the one she said prints purple to a prepress technician and he said the files are identical. I am ready to jump out the window, which is a dumb idea seeing how I live in a ground level apartment.  Anybody out there that can prevent me from going crazy??

  • Black Looks Gray?

I am needed to make black brush strokes but the black looks gray and the default black seems to be gray. I have tried all I could think but can't figure out how to fix it! Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Rachel

    Rachel,
Is it a 100% K in a CMYK document? If so, you may need to use a rich black, possibly/prefereably based upon the CMY colour combination used, and avoiding overdoing it; the maximum total ink coverage depends on the paper of intended use.
If it is an RGB document, you may ensure that it is R/G/B = 0/0/0.

  • Exported PDF converts black to gray

    Hello,
I am trying to export an InDesign CS3 document as a PDF, but all my blacks turn gray when previewed in Acrobat. I opened the PDF in Photoshop to sample the gray to make sure it wasn't a preview problem, but it is gray in Photoshop as well. I have tried using various PDF presets and various blacks (default black, CMYK build black, and Pantone black) with no positive results.
    Any ideas would be welcome!
    Thank you!

    Hi all,
Back again (had to step out to lunch--I was starving!) And boy, it sure is hot & muggy here in Dallas!
Hey Rob, to answer your question, I've compiled the details below:
    1) I've opened/printed the PDF in Acrobat Pro 8.1.3, printed to both Ricoh 2510 and Epson SP3800, and got beautiful results.
    2) I've opened/printed the PDF in Reader 9.1.1, printed to both Ricoh 2510 and Epson SP3800, same great results.
    3) My setup is: MacPro; OSX 10.5.6; Adobe CS3 (all updates for all apps); the two printers outlined above.
As a control, I also printed the InDesign file, but of course that printed great as expected. What's more, on all the PDF prints, I examined them under a loupe, and for the Ricoh output, there is absolutely no sign of screening or dot, and the rules for the musical bars, notes, etc., are superbly rendered black rules. The inkjet output under a loupe shows solid blacks and again no sign of "lightening".
Interestingly enough, even at using different settings in the print dialogue of both Reader and Acrobat, I couldn't even reproduce the 'poor quality' output described. I guess that's a good thing, though, eh? That would lead me to think that whoever downloads the PDFs will have a good chance of getting good results, too. I used the default print settings in both Reader and Acrobat, and of course the correct print driver for the respective devices. I just hit the "Print" button without making any changes.
I'm stumped now, since I can't see the results you guys are seeing, and MY results seem to be the ideal expected output. Hmmm... I'm wondering if it could be an application/driver update issue on Jeffrey's end?
Keep posting if you find out what could be your issue, and hope my experiments help shed some light on the issue!
    Cheers!
    Mikey

  • Illustrator Default PDF, if open in Acro Pro, drag and drop other .ai files, will they also....

Hi! I'm trying to archive (for myself and others for easy access) about 50 fairly complex .ai files in a single Illustrator Default PDF and maintain editability and preserve layer and grouping integrity for every separate file, and, i'm probably going to have to do this hundreds of times (at least!) in the future. Once i save the initial first pdf file through Illustrator (wish didn't even have to do this, but seems no way to do in Bridge), then open the resulting pdf w Acrobat Pro, can i then just select an entire folder's worth of ai files in Bridge, drag and drop them into the pages panel and still have the dragged and dropped files also preserve all their AI info and layer/ group integrity? An if not, thinking if not based on 20 similar experiments, what's a fast way to do this. Doing this manually each time: opening each file in AI then saving as AI pdf, then combining and arranging them all after the fact, would be, well, fairly effed in terms of time, carpal tunnel, arthritis etc. Experimented w Bridge PDF Output batching (terrible rasterized lo-res results, but great for its intended purpose) and just dragging and dropping into Acrobat (lose complicated layer names and info, all flattened to single layer). Any help most appreciated, and as i do not have regular access to das interwebs  (i live on a boat) would appreciate and heed gentle admonishment if i've misposted or broached any community etiquette here. I've researched this as well as i can but can't find anything efficient/ elegant not involving InDesign, and even then the details are skimpy. Thank You! Getting mentally exhausted and not a little loopy. Keep in mind had to teach myself both Illustrator, Acrobat etc with access to the very limited offline help menus (the boat), so a complex answer involving learning InDesign would be learning curve can't even imagine with everything else struggling to do. But if you're willing to babystep diagram it out for me or can find me a link that does i will not only be eternally grateful but will do my durndest to master it and pass it on....Thanks Again! lil mc szpf
PS If it helps I'm running the diligent dogged dusty beloved workhorse CS4 Design Premium on 27" monitor 2010 Mac (OS X 10.6.8), and took advantage of rare housesitting net access to install all most recent updates of everything, i'm barely competent w AI, PS, BR and been tackling Acrobat for past couple of months now....

im glad that somebody is atleast trying. perhaps i need to be more clear.
i will step by step describe the issue in detail.
    1) i open an email that contains an attachment .dxf or .pdf
    2) i click on the attachment shown in the email and aprompt comes up asking if i want to open or save the attachment.
    3) i select save. (by default it saves to a downloads folder. but i have also chosen to use other folders (when i did that it wouldnt save them)
    4) i highlight the downloads arrow on the right top side of my browser and click it
    5) it pulls down a list of the files that i USED to be able to click and drag onto my destop, or anyplace i chose
    6) used to be when i clicked and held the left mouse button down on top of a file of my choosing it would highlight and as i began to drag, a ghost image would appear of the file i was dragging. showing a (/) symbol next to it showing i couldnt drop the file within the browser and a + simbol showing that i could drop the file when the file was hovering over a place where i could drop the file such as my desktop or other folder. now, when i click and hold on the file.... I DONT get anything. when i drag. nothing follows. while i am "dragging" in the area that is my browser, i get the pointy finger icon. as soon as i enter an area where i could have dropped the file as before, i get my standard cursor arrow.
its really as if the drag and drop feature just dosent work IN FIREFOX.
i can drag and drop files all day long everyplace else.

  • How to print a downloaded color document in black or gray scale

I have Adobe Reader 9; Windows Vista Home Premium; HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless printer.  I have downloaded a document that is pre-set to print in color.  I want to print it in black or gray scale.  I click on the printer icon for the printing pop up.  When I click on the Properties bar to make the request for black or gray scale, nothing happens.  What steps can I take to convert the pre-set color download to be printed in black or gray scale?  Thanks!

I have only had the experience when I have downloaded a link from within an email to my Hotmail account when the download has already been set up in color.  To date, I have not had that problem with Word.       There are specifically two situations regarding two different monthly emailed newsletters.  This is through Internet Explorer 8; Windows Vista Home Premium.  (I will not use Internet Explorer 9.  It causes blocks for routine procedures, especially involving my Hotmail account--such as not being able initially to download a normal attachment or, if downloaded, not being able to print a normal download attachment.)     However, after I sent out my request for help, I switched to Mozilla Firefox and was able to print the "color" download in black right away because the Preferences bar responded as it should.  (Through Internet Explorer 8, regarding this particular link/download/attachment, the printing pop up had a Properties bar.  However, I am aware that, in some other pop up formats, there are both a Properties bar and a Preferences bar to choose from.)       I have Mozilla Firefox as a backup because, sometimes, I have to resort to it to download email attachments (whether black or color) coming from the east coast when they will not download through Internet Explorer 8.  (I am near the geographic center of the US.)     Thank you for your interest in my concern.  I will gladly accept any advice regarding being able to print an email attachment/link color download in black when using Internet Explorer 8!  Does it depend on how the link attachment is set up or what the link attachment is??

  • Selecting and copying only the black and gray of picture

    Hi everyone,
Looking for some help. I am a Paramedic Instructor and want to clean up some heart rhythms to make them more neat and presentable for use during class. Below is the sort of image I would be working with.
What I would like to do is remove only the black and gray lines (when they print out of the EKG machine some lines have some gray in them) and place them on a neater cleaner background as below
(The image above I found on a website where the creator has 100's of EKGs that this has been done with, but have been unable to get him to tell me how it was done)
Im hoping someone will be able to figure out how this can be done and lend me some help. Also let me know if another Adobe product would be more useful in this situation.
**I have CS6 Master Collection so you know what programs I have available to use**
    Warm regards,
    Bryan
    Flight Paramedic/Instructor, Maryland

    Hi Bryan,
You can probably remove most of the red lines using some method in Photoshop, like Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer (set to Monochrome) or Black & White Adjustment Layer adjusting the Red slider. Then you may have to use Levels (or Dodge Tool) to make the remaining red lines (now light gray) turn white.
Once you have a  BW EKG trace with no red, you can put it on a layer above a clean graph and set its Blend Mode to Multiply.

  • GE70-0ND Screen flashing black and gray

    Hey,
I bought a MSI GE70-0ND laptop almost 1 year ago. I have not had any problems with it until now.
I run Windows 8 on it.
Today when I logged in on my laptop the screen just immediately went black. Now it is flashing black and gray. When I move the mouse you can see the cursor moving on the screen. The special buttons such as fan boost works.
I tried connecting my laptop to another screen with a HDMI cable. The other screen showed the same flashing screen..
My laptop forced me to upgrade and install something yesterday. I think it was a windows update but I to be honest, don't know. I suspect that that update is causing this..
Any help will be appreciated. If you want additional information that I failed to provide above, let me know!
    Thanks,

What happens if you do a CTRL+ALT+DELETE? Can you see the screen just fine?
Taking a video and posting it to youtube might also be very helpful, as this is the first time I've ever heard of this issue.
    Hi, thanks for answering.
The problem fixed itself after a while. I have no idea about why it did.
    CTRL+ALT+DEL did absolutely nothing.

  • Strange black and gray lines and lockup as soon as MBP powers on

I was surfing the web, and opened a particular tab when the 26" Samsung display that I use with my MBP yellowed and just weirded out in general. All of the colors funked out, and all kinds of plaid patterns appeared. Then I had a kernel panic. I disconnected everything from the notebook (FireWire hard drives, audio interfaces, USB drives, USB mouse, etc.) and restarted it.
Now, black and gray horizontally-staggered lines are all that show up on the screen. It happens immediately after the screen lights up. I've zapped the pram, tried to reset the video ram in open firmware mode, reset the SMU, tried to boot from CD, but nothing gets rid of these weird lines. Also, the computer doesn't appear to be doing anything (i.e. if I let it sit, it's still unresponsive several minutes later). If I hold down "Option" when I turn on the MBP, press the "right arrow" key and then hit "enter," the screen turns black and stays black, but caps lock starts responding (neither the internal nor external screen displays anything but black - in fact, the external display doesn't even pick up a signal).
Is this a problem with my motherboard/video card? I have finals coming up and can't really part with this - I hope I don't have to mail it off or take it to an Apple Store (the nearest is nearly 2 hours away). Any help or advice is welcome!

Thank you very much for that article! I'll be sure to print it out and bring it along to the Apple Store on Sunday. The problem occurs whether an external display is connected or not. I think it is a video card problem given that the screen immediately goes screwy; it doesn't wait until after the notebook posts or anything.

  • How convert a color PDF File to black & white (gray scale...no color)

How convert a color PDF File to black & white (gray scale...no color)??? creative cloud cs6... Acrobat etc

Hi, just wanted to add my 2¢
I've been in publishing over 25 years and live in Acrobat for making my final files. Currently with a newspaper.
    This is what we do:
    • Tool Panes > Print Production Window
    • Select CONVERT COLORS
    • Midway down under OUTPUT INTENT, check Convert Colors to Output Intent
    • In the associated drop down menu, I choose (because I'm printing on newsprint) DOT GAIN 20% – If you're working on better stock, choose a lower dot gain percentage.
    • Click OK – this will convert the file
    • Save
Note: this affects the file you're working with. Make sure that you use this method on a COPY if you want to retain the original color version.
I think if you compare my method to the Preflight method, you'll see a tighter contrast and better blacks. I've always felt the Preflight method left continuous tones a little muddy.
Now if there was only a way to add that to ACTIONS...!

  • Pdf creation - can it be set up so the background doesn't print, and text defaults to black?

Hi, I am creating a portfolio with a black background and white text. I am anticipating that most of the time it will just be viewed on screen, but in-case it gets printed, I want to know if there is a way that you can change the print view so that the background is not printable, and any text defaults to black. I have noticed when printing web pages this often happens, but not sure if it's possible through InDesign.
    Any replies gratefully appreciated.
    Karen

Here is a way that this can be done: Convert the background into a button, this will allow you to set the background to be visible in PDF, but doesn't print. Note: with the button selected, you can access the visibility options from the flyout menu of the button panel. Copy the frame containing the reverse text and convert it to a button and apply the same visibility (visible in PDF, but doesn't print). Paste text in same position, make it black and send it to back (or create a layer behind everything and place text here). The black text does not have to be a button. When you export, make sure to have interactive elements selected. In PDF, background and reverse type will be viewable, but allowing the black text to print.
