Illustrator EPS behavior

In an Illustrator file, an object (such as a path, image or an effect) exceeds the defined document size...
The file (saved as Illustrator EPS) is imported into a page layout program...
Should the document size (defined in Illustrator) 'crop' the file or does the object that exits be visible and affect the file's bounding box in the page layout program?
I hope this description is clear.

As I understand it, the EPSF specification does not provide for definition of document page size.
An EPS saved out of Illustrator should not "crop" content to any defined document size.
To your concern regarding page layout applications, a simple test will answer your question. Create a quick AI document with one rectangle inside and one outside the artboard and save as EPS. You'll see that Quark, InDesign, and Pagemaker ignore the artboard bounds (document size).
A clipping mask applied in Illustrator is another matter entirely.

  • The difference between photoshop eps and illustrator eps

Before installing snow leopard, Quark Xpress could distinguish between photoshop eps and illustrator eps files when a file needed to be modified. Now all it does is open files in only one item of software (depending on which you have told it to open files in). It's very inconvenient
    Anyone got any ideas?

It sounds like you may have assigned EPS files to open in a particular app. That causes anything ending in .eps to open in that app, and the OS ignores the rest of the UTI (Uniform Type Identifiers) data.
About the only way to fix it is to clear the LaunchServices database. Close all running applications. Open the Terminal and copy/paste the following line and press Enter:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Close the Terminal and immediately restart. The OS will build a new database based on the installed applications. EPS files created by a particular application should now open in that app.

  • Preview in Illustrator EPS

I cannot get a preview in Illustrator eps but I can get one in Illustrator.ai. How come? Thanks.

    >I typically click on the saved file ( in list view ) and see a thumbnail of the file in Illustrator.
Are you sure you don't mean column view?
What current version; what OS version? Have you been able to do this in several prior versions of Ai and prior OS versions?
I am on 10.4.11 and AICS3, but can't remember it ever working as you describe back to Illustrator 5 and the corresponding Mac OS. Is there a preference I need to set? Can others please confirm or comment on this.
It seems that this is the very issue of the original post and Scott's #1 response. Note that Scott has some credentials with Ai. My earlier comments on Scott's response to Ron's post was in essence that it should work as described by John in #10, and that Scott's explanation for it not working that way seemed to me inadequate. IOW I think Scott can and should have given a better explanation.
Can other users please report wether the Ai eps preview works for you as described in #s 10 & 12, or wether you simply get an Ai Icon in the File > Open dialog from any version of Illustrator.
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Placing Illustrator EPS Problem

I am trying to import an 6.875 x 10.5 inch document created in Illustrator CS6, saved as an eps, into Indesign CS6. Here is the problem:
The file is lettering for a comic book, so the lettering is randomly occuring on the page. It doesn't spread to the borders of the
of the 6.875 x 10.5 inch page. When I go to place it into Indesign, it comes in cropped to the dimensions of where the actual
lettering fitted on the illustrator page. (for example, if I just had once caption box with text in the middle of the page that was
1x5 inches, the imported eps document will come in as a 1x5 inch eps file.)  The problem here is that I can't center it properly
without having to adjust each imported eps and line it up with the page. This is rather diffucult because it has to line up precisely.
I remember this being a problem in CS4 also, but I came to a solution and can't remember what it was.
So my question is, How do I get Indesign to recognize the Illustrator eps as a 6.875 x 10.5 inch document that I can just center
using the align tools? Not sure if it is something in illustrator I need to do.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

One other thing. I used to be able to drag the file from "finder" on my mac, directly onto the ID document. It would then automatically place it there. Now when I do, there is the small preview box that comes up. I then have to double click to get the file to come in. Then it just crops it to the "artwork only", not the actually entire crop area. To top it off, once I get the file in, regardless of how, I can't use the align tools to get the file centered. This is really making my workflow counter productive. To have to "cnt + d" instead of just dragging and dropping the files and then using align tools to get everything centered is going to make putting a 200 page book a very long process. I have to be missing something here. I can't believe that these simple things would be removed from ID in the latest version.  Basically my work flow is this. Create an ID document and then drag and drop the "tiff" files of the art on one layer. Then doing to the same with the lettered eps files. The reason I don't just use the illustrator file is because when I save an Illustrator file that I simply add lettering on top of the artwork, it makes a 15mb piece of tiff artwork with the illustrator lettering into a 30mb file (if not larger). So I have to remove the art and then save it as an artless file, with just the lettering. I'd be more than happy to hear if anybody has a better way to do this. Illustrator is bloating my files. Once I separate the art and the lettering only files, I am working with the 15mb art and then 350kb eps file of the artwork, instead of working with a 30 plus mb Illustrator file. That starts to seriously make the file size of a 200 page book go up. Thanks

  • OSX 10.6 does not differentiate between PS or illustrator .eps files

Have other people encountered this problem?
I have found that snow leopard does not differentiate between photoshop and illustrator .eps files in order to double click and open them.
Does anyone know how to correct this?

    Hello Chris,
Thanks so much for clarifying about OSX 10.6 opening .eps files in illustrator or photoshop.
I was wondering if you knew out how
to create a droplet that opens multiple PDFs and saves as .gifs.
    When I
try to do it, all of the .gifs end up having the same name as the file
that I created the script with, and a "-1" at the end.
    Actually
there are two droplets that I want to create (to be able to
    drop multiple pdf files):
    Portrait/Square
    script:
Final thumbnail file to be 51 pixels wide by (x?) pixels
    tall
Final thumbnail file should be 72 dpi,
    Final
thumbnail file should be flattened(no transparency in white areas),
Final thumbnail file should have a 1 pixel wide Grey border to all
    sides
Final thumbnail file should be saved as a GIF file, RGB
    Landscape script:
Final thumbnail file to be 65 pixels wide by (x?)
    pixels tall
Final thumbnail file should be 72 dpi,
    Final
thumbnail file should be flattened(no transparency in  white areas),
Final thumbnail file should have a 1 pixel wide Grey border to all
    sides
Final thumbnail file should be saved as a GIF file, RGB
      Thanks,
    Matthew

Subject: OSX 10.6 does not differentiate between PS or illustrator .eps files
Given EPS files are "really" Illustrator files (Photoshop not being a
vector application), you probably want to make Illustrator the default.
    No.
EPS files can be produced and read by many applications.
And most EPS files cannot be read by Illustrator.
Frequently EPS files in particular need to be edited in the application which created them (Freehand vs. AI vs. Quark gradients anyone?).

  • Mail keeps crashing when attaching illustrator .eps files

Whenever I receive or try to attach an Illustrator .eps file, mail crashes. The .eps file is fine, and can be read by CS and CS2 software.
Whenever Mail tries to read the attachment, it seems it can't cope and quits.
Bit of a bummer when I'm a designers and that's what I need to send to clients.
The only way I get around it is by zipping or stuffing it as a stuffit file.
How can I reload Mail or cure the problem?
    All ideas welcome

Look at the console logs for any errors that occur at the same time Mail crashes. What do the errors say?

  • Why the Finder doesn't make diefference between CS3 illustrator .eps and CS3 Photoshop .eps when I double click on a file?

The finder used to make difference between Illustrator ans Photoshop .eps files except sometomes when these files came from a Windows PC, but now it doesn't work anymore and all .eps files are considereds as Photoshop .eps files.
How can I revert to original default settings?
    Thanks. :-)

Prior to Snow Leopard, Mac OS actually remembered what app created a file, and used that app when you double-clicked a file.  Now, Snow Leopard goes entirely by the suffix, modified by any particular settings you have made for that file in Get Info.
If you want to recreate the old behavior, there is a third-party package called LaunchCodes that claims to do this.

  • Is there a way to keep your original Illustrator EPS file open after saving it as a PDF?

After I create artwork in Illustrator, and save it as an EPS, I have to then save it as a PDF so I can email it to the customer for proofing/approval. The pain in the behind part is that once I save this EPS as a PDF, I have to close the PDF then reopen the original EPS to continue working on it/view it, whatever. I know in InDesign, once you save your EPS file as a PDF file, the original EPS file remains open. Is there a setting in Illustrator that will work the same way? And if not....Why not?!

Now can you to anything about bad drivers, inconsiderate people, telemarketing phone calls, bad hair days, etc.
HA I wish, let me know when you find a resolution to those problems.

  • Dropshadows with white box from logo created illustrator EPS, HELP?

Does anyone know the best way to keep a dropshadow we created in illustrator for a logo? we have tried a photoshop transparent file, the element created in illustrator (in this case an oval with a blur) and everytime we place in InDesign, we get a white box, frustrating!!!!

By vendor, do you mean the printer? or the client?
    If the client:
    1) Politely say No.
    2) Then explain to them patiently, like to a child how 2+2=4, that EPS is not a valid nor modern file format to use with InDesign and that you are the expert and are being paid for you expertise in such technical design matters.
    3) Otherwise, you take no responsiblity for the output and will have them sign off on that fact to cover your ***.
The client, in my experience, only wants a product that meets or exceeds their expectations. They don't have to know how you did it.
    If a printer:
    1) get him/her to explain why or how it must be EPS in a InDesign workflow. Then if not satisfied with their explanation...
    2) get another printer who is working in the 21st century.

  • Illustrator EPS Imported Into FrameMaker 8

At times I use Document Setup in Illustrator to set a particular size such as a 6" x 4". Then, I resize my object(s) to fit inside this new setup. I save the file as an EPS and import this file into Framemaker by reference. When I do the import, the file blows up in size dramatically and has a lot of extra white space around the image. Is there a way to keep the image constant when importing into Framemaker?

    Paul,
Have you checked that there aren't any spurious graphic elements (such
as empty strings) left behind outside of your new artboard area? Zoom
way out and do a ctrl+A to select all to see if something unexpected
    is getting picked up.
Otherwise, it should be working. I do the same procedure as you
    outlined when resizing in Illustrator.

  • Illustrator eps saving problem - this file is in use

I use Illustrator CS5.1 eps drawings in my Quark 9.3.1.1 files. I've recently been getting a new problem when altering these and saving them while the Q9 document containing the original illustration is open. Illustrator says it can't save as the file is in use by another application. It then makes a temp file. The only way around it seemes to be to save with a different name - deeply boring. Sometimes it just crashes. I'm on Lion 10.7.4.

Try closing quark, then see if you can save your .eps. Still dont work, close down all other apps. You have all the latest updats so trying to determine what has a hold on your file, if not an app then are you on a server?

  • Illustrator .eps issues.

I have two issues that I'm hoping for some help solving.
I am operating in the newest version of Illustrator and I'm having issues with my .eps files when they are sent to Roland Versaworks or opened in Flexon programs. My printer is telling me that when he opens my .eps art files in Flexon to print on a smaller machine, there is a "black box" covering the entire artwork like a mask. He is having to work extra to remove this mask before printing our customers order. He is telling me this isnt happening in Roland, but I want to make sure it doesn't happen in the future and if it does what I can do about it.
When I open my .eps files in Illustrator or Corel there is not black mask to speak of. It doesn't show in any of the layers.
Still, is there something I can do to prevent it from showing up in my printers programs? Is there a step I'm missing or a step I can incorporate to check the file and make sure its not there? Or is this a Flexon/Illustrator combatiblity issue for the manufacturers?
Roland Versaworks: my .eps art files sometimes open with bits of artwork missing, or the cutline missing. I have calibrated our cutline to Rolands and also Illustrators specifications but there are still instances when it doesnt come through. Any suggestions on what else I can do to avoid these issues? It slows down my companies production time to go back, re check, re apply cut lines(that are already there) and resave the file....
    Thankyou in advance!

At times yes, but this is showing up on basic stroke and fill artwork as well, with no dropshadows/transparency effects.

  • IndesignCS5 "edit original" button launches preview to open native Illustrator EPS

Help! I can't believe CS5 does this. Is there a fix besides using the 'Edit with" submenu?
    Thanks

Right click any EPS file and choose get info. From there you can choose the program you want to open files.
Beware the use of EPS. You can only have one program as the default choice and I've found that many people hanging onto to EPS are also using it from Photoshop.
While I'll use an EPS if it's client supplied logo, the moment I have to open the file to do anything with it, it gets resaved in modern format.
Rules of thumb: In Photoshop save as PSD unless the file contains text or vector data. In that case save as PDF (you can change the extension to PDP and the operating system will know to use Photoshop for editing)
From Illustrator: AI or PDF. Makes no difference really since placing AI files actually use the PDF portion of the file.

  • Need to manually convert an illustrator eps file

I have a logo file (eps) that was created in illustrator CS2... I need to open it using illustrator 10. I tried manually editing the header information of the file (changing creator version from 12 to 10, etc), but it still won't open the file.
What do I need to change in the file to get it to open? It's just a simple logo... one color, no fancy effects like transparency, brush styles, etc. (no effects at all, actually). I thought an eps is an eps is an eps... why is this not true? What's so special about the illustrator CS2 eps that makes it incompatible with illustrator 10?

It's always a good idea to supply platform and AI version info.
How are you "converting" the file? Are you choosing "Save As" and selecting PDF from the file format options? This will bring up additional save options. I would suggest "Illustrator Default" setting unless you have specific needs.
