Illustrator: Expanding Blend Mysteriously Changes Shape

Hi all!
My name is Alexis I have a blending problem (hiiii Alexis...).
Okay, seriously, I've used the blend tool to make a series of lines between two other lines; I need to expand everything so that the whole thing becomes a fill-only object (no strokes):
- I expand it (Object > Expand; Object box checked, Fill box checked, Stroke box checked) and the object becomes strokes-only (no fill at all)
- I expand it again (Object > Expand; Object box greyed out, Fill box checked, Stroke box checked) and the object becomes fill-only (yay!) except the shape of the lines has changed (boo!). Unchecking the stroke box and leaving only the Fill box checked seems to have no effect, the object remains stroke-only).
What's going on here?
I've made a diagram to explain my problem a little better in case I haven't been clear enough: http://tinypic.com/r/6pqbyc/5
Please and thank you!
A

This is a shot in the dark, I admit, but;
After you expand the first time, while the shapes are only strokes, what happens if you try Object > Path > Add Anchor Points before expanding the second time?
It really shouldn't make any difference, but I've seen cases where it does.

  • Dvi to video adapter changes shape

When I plug my DVI to Video adapter into my macbook pro, all of the displays change shape, and no matter what resolution I choose, it won't go back to it's true size.   When I try a DVI to vga adapter, it works fine.

Try starting the Mac in Safe mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Hopefully that will result in a usable screen. If it does, go into Displays Preferences and change the resolution to what it was when you had things working properly before. Then restart normally and the resolution selection made under Safe mode should persist through the normal restart.

  • Why the mouse pointer in Logic Pro does not change shape during work in OSX 10.9.1?

I've a MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch Late 2013 and I'm using two external displays. One connected to to the HDMI port (display 1) the other to thunderbolt (display 2). The MacBook display is closed. I’m working with Logic Pro 9.1.8 (32bit) with OSX 10.9.1
Why the mouse pointer in Logic Pro does not change shape during work???
It was already difficult with OSX 10.9 but now after upgrading to 10.9.1 it's game over!
At least before I could select which display use Logic Pro to have all the shape functions of the pointer. Not in both displays, so to be forced to edit in ONLY ONE of the two displays using this workaround: (right click on Logic icon in Dock: Option --> Desktop on Display 1). Now or I select “Option --> All Desktops” or does not work. However, by selecting all displays you say goodbye to Mission Control. This can’t be a solution!!!
The amazing thing is that Nuendo has no problem while Logic Pro, Apple's native software, it can't!
With Nuendo it’s indifferent in which display you are working, the shape of the mouse pointer changes shape depending on the requirement in both displays.
    This thing drives me crazy!
    Solutions?
Here some ideas in other foums:
    http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=86264
But this aren't really solutions but workarounds. Use Logic in all desktops makes Mission Control useless!!

I installed all over again by formatting as suggested by the genes of pro application support. Each plug-in, each virtual instrument, a job that lasted 3 days. And as suggested for each new plug-in I proceeded to check the proper functioning of Logic Pro and did each time a back up with Time Machine.
    The Result:
Logic works as it should ONLY on the primary monitor and ONLY on the first desktop.
    BUT
Reason and Nuendo dont' have this issue !!
I believe that Apple developers are thinking only to mobile phones and things like messages or face time.
    And that's not all!
After a few weeks, perhaps by installing a version of Adobe Acrobat, I say maybe because I'm not sure, logic has stopped working properly. Again problems with the mouse pointer.
Luckily I had a back up! But now I'm terrified to install new programs. Thanks Apple!

  • How do I make a user shaped vignette move and change shape in Color

I  want to isolate an irregular shaped area on screen by creating a vignette linked to a shape. The trouble is as the shape I want to isolate moves across the screen it changes size, orientation and shape. I know I can use keyframes when I'm using a round or square vignette but how can I track/keyframe a user defined shape?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Actually, I've sort of answered my own question. I've found out that having created a shape in the geometry room and attached it to a secondary correction tab, you can make the shape change shape, position and size. What you must do is to stay in the geometry room with the shape selected and then create key frames. At each keyframe you can alter the position of the points defining the shape. You can't however morph between different defined shapes.
    Hope that makes sense!

  • History Panel Option to ignore Layer Blend Mode Changes

Using shift+plus and minus keys to see various layer blend modes eats up my History. Not quite sure why it even records... you can't use the History Brush to "blend" previous blend modes. And it is not difficult to go back to a previous blend mode. I'd like to see a History Option to ignore Layer Blend Mode Changes, like you have for Layer Visibility Changes.

OK. Changes in the Blending Dialog don't record in History until committed. Thanks!
But I don't see a way to quickly go through the various Blend Modes like you can with Shift+ plus/minus keys. I really like that keyboard method to rapidly view and compare various Blend Modes.

  • Image Pattern Recognition (slightly changing shapes)

Hello all, I wrote a program for my work which calculates zonal windshear through a series of images (over time) showing storms traveling. The user clicks center points of the storm he/she is tracking and it uses deltas of time/distance (with longitude/latitude) to calculate the wind speed. My boss would like this to be automated using some kind of autocorrelation technique where a storm is chosen once and the program finds it in successive images. Now, the problem is here that the storms change shape slightly, but overall are still recognizable so pixel by pixel searching does not seem to be an option (tried with a matching tolerance of less than 60%, everything went terribly). I looked into the JAI but could not find anything to help with my problem. One thing that gives me hope, is that these storms travel zonally only, so I only need to scan across horizontally in the image (saturn images at 5 microns). So, can anyone guide me into something to research? I would greatly appreciate any advice and by the way these images are all grayscale.

Hmm.. I'm a bit confused.  I thought that when you convert a
selection to a path, the new path follows the exact location of the
selection. (Therefore conversion from the selection bounds to the path
    should be pixel exact)
Nope. Wand some part of a photograph and zoom in to %1600. Then make the selection a workpath with various tolerance levels. At 0.5 you get a very good approximation, but converting between bitmap graphics and vector graphics will never be pixel perfect.
What I don't know how to do (if it's even possible) is program
Photoshop using scripts to alter each and every pixel on the path using
an algorithm similar to what you described.
You can use the Path APIs in PS to describe as many points on a path as you need.
BTW, when you ".. skip it and check the next point on the path" what
path are we talking about (we just rejected a test point on the current
path because it was out of alignment).  The new path hasn't even been
defined yet.  Even if you used the next point on a tangent to the
previous two points as the new path, what's to say that that tangent
will meet up with the correct portion of the path?
A better way of looking at the this is that you traverse the path. If the next point is way out of whack, delete it and check the next point. If the border defects aren't too large, you eventually find a point that is near enough that you can discard/delete the intermediate points, though you do end up with a small flat part on the circle.
NetGeek888, has an interesting idea (see my commet to his post)
If you are going to have a user tweaking the selection, I'd take the bounds of the initial wand selection, as he suggests, create a circle in those bounds, and let the user adjust the circle's size and location.
You probably need to start coding some of these ideas up and see what's reasonable for your workflow.

  • My bookmarks mysteriously change folder names and positions in the tree

Sometimes when I go to add a folder, it gets repeated in different places, or overwrites an existing bookmark folder and mysteriously changes its location. It is very frustrating to try and categorize bookmarks when there is some gremlin or evil elf that confuses things. Category folders get renamed yet have totally unrelated links within it. Why can't bookmarks work like with some semblance of dependability like Windows Explorer does? What the hell is going on with bookmarks?!??

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Email suffix mysteriously changed to .mac?

New to Mac. Using Entrourage as mail program from MS Office 2004. Currently trying out .mac service. When sending emails or sending replies, many emails are rejected becuase the suffix is mysteriously changed to .mac when in fact the intended recipient does not have a .mac address. Why is this happening and what can be done to correct the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, after further review, I see that I had entered invalid 'aliases' and apparently apple 'assigned' a .mac extension to the invalid nicknames.
Specifically, I addressed an email to 'time, david'....two nicknames that weren't valid (because they are case-sensitive). I sent the email from Bellsouth. So when a bcc came to my .mac account, I see that the addresses were then [email protected] and [email protected], both invalid.
My question has been answered. Thank you.

  • VECTORS USED WITH IN SYMBOLS CHANGE SHAPE WHY?

I am Designing some shoe boxes at work and applying simple brand logo's to them. I've created a 3-D drawing
of it and then made each side of the shoe box and turned them into a symbol so I can map art them in the 3D
effect mode but I have noticed as soon as I make each side as a symbol the vectors slighty change shape i.e letters
become thicker or thinner but not in a perspective way! How can I prevent this from happening?

Have you converted the text to outlines? Could either be something with a stroke being to thin and showing up when deformed or, if based on dynamic text, some re-rendering of the type going on when it better shouldn't...

  • Wallpaper flashes and windows expand whenever iTunes changes track.

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone else is facing this and has a solution: basically my wallpaper image flashes and any windows I have minimized to the Dock expand whenever iTunes changes tracks. It's not a huge problem, but it can be a bit of a pain (there, it just happened again, I had to minize stuff in order to get back to this window). Any thoughts? Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks!
P.S.: I listed the topic under Lion because it never happened before I upgraded to it.

Give this a try guys. Found it while searching:
Close iTunes, open Terminal and write these two lines
    defaults delete com.apple.dock itunes-notifications
    defaults delete com.apple.dock notification-always-show-image;killall Dock
Seems to have fixed it for me!

  • Just updated to Mavericks. Cursor changes shape strangely. Any idea why?

I run a new MacBook Air, only a few months old. 13 inch model. I just updated to OS X Mavericks a few minutes ago and I notice my cursor keeps changing shape. For example, when I go to the App Store, the cursor, normally an arrow, will randomly turn into a pointer finger like when you hover over a clickable thing there, but even after I move away, it remains a finger. Then recently, I was going to my About This Mac option under the Apple in the top bar and it turned into the little vertical line like it would become on a text box and it remained that way until I moved to a different program. I guess this isn't more than a nuisance, but a nuisance it is and I wonder if anyone else has had such a problem.

Me too. Actually since Mountain Lion on a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13in. 8GB RAM, upgraded flash drive.
Arbitrary cursor behavior. Should be a hand or and arrow, but stays stuck as an i-bar. More than annoying. Makes me use Chrome when I don't want to. Now it is popping up in Mail.
    Any ideas?

  • Pathfinder - divide changes shape of figure

    Hi,
I'm trying to make a leaf. I'm following this tutorial:
How To Draw A Leaf in CS5 Illustrator - Beginner Tutorial - Using the Pen Tool and Gradients - YouTube
At about 2:40 in the video she tries to use the pen tool and pathfinder -> divide to make a line in the middle. When I do the same thing this happens:
As you can see the tip of the leaf doesn't look so good. This is the best result I've gotten after many attempts at this. It is literally impossible for me to use divide the way she does without distorting the shape of the leaf.
How exactly do I fix this issue?
    //ekmanch89

    ekmanch,
In the Window>Stroke palette, you may change to Round Cap (and Join, those match), or reduce the Miter Limit. The former looks better.

  • Beginner Illustrator issues dealing with dividing shape- frustrated?

Ok, so I'm trying to learn how to use Illustrator for specifically fashion.
I'm following this book to learn the basics and i'm going through each step.
I made this basic shaped dress, added a neckline with a dashed  line..then moved on to make a straight line at the waist. We are then  told to marquee over a piece of the dress and the path line we just made  for the waist..and then divide.
Once you divide, the fill box should have a question mark, it says.  After that we can ungroup and the top of the dress and bottom should  separate.
Well it doesn't and it's really irritating me. The pathline for the  waist blends in with the fill color of the dress so it turns from a  black thin line to blending in with the pink dress. [The book, at this  step, has the waist line still as black].
Then when i try to ungroup...ungroup option doesn't show. It just says  'group'. So basically when i try to move the dress in hopes that it  still divided, the dress moves and the only thing that remains is the  neckline that i mentioned previously.
=\ I don't understand why my pathline blends in with the fill color of  the dress. [even when i change the view to outline vs preview it doesn't  even show up. only the outline of the dress and the neckline. its as if  the pathline for the waist just erased]. I also don't understand why an  ungroup option doesn't appear. uggh.

    Now that is strange, Steve.
    A comparison:
I just tried with 5 target rectangles, some of them crossing one another, and an open cutting path crossing them. With Object>Path>Divide Objects Below I got 10/40 ungrouped rectangles as expected, without their messing with one another. With Pathfinder>Divide I got (in this case) 18/100 grouped rectangles, everything being cut to pieces.
Correspondingly, with a sixth cutting rectangle I got 15/60 ungrouped rectangles, and 29/144 grouped ones.
As it appears, if you only want the top object to cut anything, Pathfinder will make a mess.
    Two other comparisons:
A rectangle and an open path that cuts into it from one side: One 7 point path in both cases.
A rectangle and an open path that cuts through it: Two 4 point paths, ungrouped/grouped.
As mentionned earlier, in all cases, only the cutting path needs to be selected with Object>Path>Divide.
There may be some difference in behaviour, depending on her age/maturity.

  • How to change shape properties after having created one?

Photoshop CC 2014 -- latest update as of October 06, 2014
    Windows 7
How can I change a shapes properties after having created one.
I have created a simple ellipse.
When I drew the ellipse with the tool, I had the option for the fill color/style and stroke, etc.
After I have created said ellipse, I wish to change its properties.
I can use the Paint Bucket, gradient tool, etc for the fill, but is there way to get back to the original set of tools with which I created the ellipse in the first place?
If I use Edit > Stroke... it adds a new stroke around the existing shape.
If I use Edit > Fill... the entire layer is filled.
There must surely be a way to reenter the tool set to edit an existing shape. No?
    Thanks,

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for the helpful tips, advice, etc.
    I didn't explain myself very well--I apologize.
However, with your tips I figured it out:
When I create a rectangle or ellipse, I can later click on its layer and the Properties window appears with options to change their "Live Shape Properties."
However, not so with the Polygon and Shape tools. With them, the Properties window shows only the Masks, but the Toolbar still shows some basic properties I can change.
I was stymied by the above differences while working only on a Shape.
    I've attached two JPEG screenshots.
I didn't need to change the actual shape, just the fill/stroke, etc.
Later, I may wish to change the actual shape, but that appears to be done by simply creating something new.
    Thanks much!!
