Illustrator File icon problems

Okay, I think I really messed things up on my computer. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit and I recently got through uninstalling my CS4 version of the Adobe Design Premium. Unfortunately, doing this changed my file associations and messed up the icons for file types. First my .ai files had no icon and didn't open with Illustrator CS5.1. Then I got that fixed, but .EPS had no icon. Having it open with Illustrator gave it the default .ai icon and not the .eps icon like it was before. Even the file type description is gone, having been replaced by the generic "Adobe Illustrator Artwork 15.1". SVG and SVGZ files also have the same problem.
I've tried modifying the registry in hopes to get the correct icon back but nothing works. I already treid reinstalling the program, too. What do I do from here?

Okay, so the default program thing fixed EPS but the file types program didn't quite fix SVG. Changing anything about SVG changes all .AI files as well, so that means there is still no distinction. It's as if the two formats are somehow one.
I don't know if I changed anything for the worse but there isn't normally a "Adobe.Illustrator.SVG" key in the registry so if I make the .svg files not open in Illustrator, it shows up as expected. It's just that anytime it's associated with Illustrator, it defaults to the regular .ai icon instead of using its custom icon like it's supposed to for other files.

  • My Illustrator file icons don't match what the actual file image is. How can I fix this?

I'm using Illustrator 5.0 with MAC OS 10.8.4 and the Illustrator file icons are different thatn the actual file image. It's using the same image for 5 different files. THey all started out the same, but I edited them and then did a save as, but the file icon image didn't update. How can I fix this? I tried resaving the files and copying the files, but it didn't work.
    Thanks
    Michelle

Are you on CS5 or the very old AI5, which a few vinyl cut shops may have?
Do a save as , and enable PDF Compatible. That usually helps if the icons are blank, but may help you.
If that don't help do a command I on the file, select the icon, and hit the delete key to see if anything happens.

  • Illustrator File Icon missing in Vista Business? !

    Hello,
Under WinXP, the AI file type would display an orange flower icon for Illustrator files. Under Windows Vista Ultimate, the AI file icon is only a white page...
Any idea why? Can this be changed?
    Thanks,
    Luke

After months with the same problem, I just found a way that worked for me. I hope it is useful for other people having the same headache.
    1. I downloaded this program: http://defaultprogramseditor.com/ (it doesn't need to be installed, and I checked it before I clicked on it, at Virus Total (http://www.virustotal.com/).
    2. The problem I found in my case, is that both .eps and .ai were just "Illustrator Files". So I deleted both file types with "Default Programs Editor", like this:
         a. Click "File Type Settings".
         b. Click "Delete an extension".
         c. In "Search", type "ai", select it and delete it.
         d. Do the same with the "eps" extension and close the Programs Editor.
    3. Open Illustrator, and the guy will cry that the Windows Registry need to be repaired; say yes (if you want, you can create a new -blank- .ai and/or a new -blank- .eps, and save them both anywhere, only to see later how they will -finally- look to the way they should usually look. ;-))
    4. Open the program "Default Programs Editor" again and follow these steps to change to the beautiful, impossible, secrets, wonderful icons you should see instead that horrible white sheet:
         a. Click "File Type Settings".
         b. Click "Icon".
         c. In "Search", type "ai", select it and click "Next".
         d. If some s**t about AIRegtool comes, just ignore it, say OK or whatever lets you to click "Browse" in order to look for the right icon inside the Illustrator (.exe) file.
It might be different in your case, but in mine (Windows Vista Home Premium, CS4) the route was: C/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS4/Support Files/Contents/Windows/Illustrator.exe and click "Open".
         e. Now -finally- you can find the most wanted icons in the world. Choose the right icon (of course you will know which one it is, since you're really missing it), click "Ok", and click "Save Icon" (or you can open the menu and choose "Save to Registry" -what I did- or "Save to .reg file".
         f. Repeat the same for the rest of the icons/file types that you were missing.
P.S.: Excuse me if my English is not perfect. ;-)) Feel free to copy and post this in other forums, I know there have been thousands of people looking for a solution to this thing.
Greetings! and enjoy your icons again!! -finally.

  • Illustrator File Icons are White?? Windows 7

I seem to have lost my icons for Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2 files. The files show as a standard white "page" icon, instead of the program icon. Since I often have multiple Adobe file formats in one folder, it makes it difficult to distinguish which ones are Illustrator vs. InDesign. Oddly enough, Photoshop files and GoLive site files show their icons for files.
I read elsewhere online that this could be caused by a cleaning utility program such as CCleaner when "{GUID} folders are deleted from C:\Windows\Installer." However, I can't find the answer as to how to FIX it.
I have tried using Windows>Default Programs>Associate a file type or protocol with a program to check that Illustrator and InDesign are set as defaults to open the files. I found that the programs were set to shortcuts within the Adobe folder. I fixed that by deleting the shortcut and putting the actual program link as the source to open the program. (Actual program .exe file was located within Adobe Illustrator> Support Files>Contents>Windows.)
Also, I have the Adobe CS2 Suite installed under Program Files (x86).
Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Update: I used  the program Default Program Editor suggested in this thread. It easily fixed my blank Illustrator icons, but my will not fix my InDesign icons, which still show as blank white pages. Well, I'm halfway there, at least.

  • Pages (Mavericks) File Icons Problem

My mother-in-law brought this problem to my attention.
The icons of all the Pages files (both "created" files as well as templates are shown as seen in the attachment - the icon has a block of "distorted" color below it.
Not sure if this was a side effect of the Mavericks upgrade or what.
Any ideas how to fix these icons?

I haven't observed this, has anyone else?
Usual a hashed graphic is a sign of either graphics card problems, or a failed render routine.

  • .py file icons problem

anyone know how i can set an icon for all .py and .pyc files like in lubuntu and fedora 15? i used lxde for those and they have proper icons for the files, but i cant figure out how to do it in arch.

seems with the recent upgrade i lost my icons that i had set for this. took awhile to set all the symbolic links too. also i can no longer double click to open the files in scite or idle even though it appears the mimetypes are set correctly
actually when i set the elementary theme it still doesnt work anymore as the links point to a plain text file it look slike. i am unsure what happened to cause this issue though.

  • How to revert to the default file icon for Illustrator CS4

    Hey everyone,
It has been a few months now and I've searched most forums on how to fix this issue, but sadly, It seems the problem isn't that common. I'm using a Windows 7 machine and have installed the Adobe Master CS4 suite.
The problem is that I can't seem to revert the illustrator file icon (how .ai files appear in the explorer) back to its original image. The image below shows you what the .ai files look like in my computer. I was hoping if there's someone who could help rectify this issue.
    Much thanks!
    Var
p.s. I've tried the default file association tool, and have also tried switching back and forth between .ai's default program, but I still get this ugly file icon.

This is what an Illie file icon normally looks like.
    I'm using CS3 on a Mac.
If I understand you right you want to be able to see a thumbnail og the file's content.
As long as you have saved your file with pdf compatability you will be able to see such a thumbnail in the Finder when you have your Finder window set as Columns and click on the file's icon. You will also see a thumbnail if you use Bridge.
However saving Illie files with pdf compatability increases their weight enormously, so I usually don't unless there's a special reason for doing so.

  • Illustrator desktop icons change after trying Inkscape?

A couple of days ago, just out of curiosity, I tried out Inkscape. Of course, I was unimpressed, trashed it, and removed XQuartz.
Afterwards, I found that all of my Illustrator desktop icons had changed to odd square generic document icons with the "To place or open this file in other applications..." text in the preview. Doing a "save as copy" from the file didn't change this. Creating a new Illustrator file and saving created a normal preview, but it was still displayed in that same kind of square icon.
Otherwise, Illustrator works fine, no problems I can see -- it's just that the desktop icons for Illustrator files aren't standard Illustrator file icons anymore. A minor nitpicky annoyance, granted, but I'd be interested in knowing how I can fix this.
I'm running Illustrator CS6 on a late 2013 MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5.
    Thanks in advance,

Just tried it a moment ago after seeing your reply. Didn't seem to work. In fact, as I recall, that was the first thing I did the other night.
The files were still opening into Illustrator OK, but not displaying standard .ai document icons, so associations weren't really the problem, from the looks of it. Seems as if something else somewhere has jerked around the icons for .ai documents.

  • Icon (ie: Illustrator files) content no longer viewable in Finder.

Icon content no longer viewable in Finder. - Anyone have this issue with CS4 and Leopard?
For example: Illustrator file not viewable in finder in Leopard. Interestingly, I seem to remember that when scrolling through Illustrator files in the finder with Tiger, Panther, etc, if you have the preview window active, at least with .AI files, you'd get a preview of the graphics and not the default AI (or EPS) icon. Now I don't get any preview. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure if this is an Adobe or Apple issue, but I'm really finding too many quirks and conflicts between CS4 and Leopard that weren't issues in older versions of either companies previous software (say, CS3 or CS2 and Tiger).

...though it’s shameful that the old adage “if it ain’t broke (using the finder to preview file contents) wasn’t followed by Adobe and/or Apple. Thanks for this!
    No kidding...
FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T FIND THE QUICK LOOK FOLDER **
It’s in your main computer system LIBRARY. You can’t search for it successfully, but I found it there.
You can also add a folder to your User Library called Quick Look (I named mine Quicklook and it worked as advertised.) I added it there just in case something went awry. You can have the same folders that is in the System Library in your User Library. I do this so I wouldn't mess with the System. If it works without a problem, and want it system-wide, I move the items from the User Library to the System Library.

  • Illustrator files with PDF icons

Silly little problem. Running 10.4.11 on a G5 iMac, Illustrator CS2. Often when I save or resave an Illustrator file, the file's icon is PDF rather than Illustrator. I then have to Get Info on another Illustrator file, copy the icon, Get Info on the other file and paste the icon to restore it.
Any reason why this annoyance is happening and how to avoid it?
    Thanks.

Just use Rainer's Nudge contextual menu to force the Finder to update the icon: http://www.brockerhoff.net/nudge/index.html.
Note that the issue you're seeing is merely cosmetic: even though the document has a PDF icon, it's still set to open in Illustrator.
The reason this occurs is that when Illustrator saves your file, it doesn't overwrite your original immediately, since if you were to lose power and your computer were to shut down, a half-written file would surely be corrupt, resulting in complete data loss. Instead, Illustrator writes the data out to a new file that happens to be named "Acro########.tmp", and by default, a file like that has a PDF icon and will be opened in Acrobat. After Illustrator has written out that file, it then deletes your original .ai file and renames the temp file to be just like your original .ai file. Unfortunately, the Finder still wants to hang on to the old icon which it has likely cached in its memory. Using Nudge will force it to re-examine the file and show the correct icon.
    Hope this helps....

  • Problem with linked illustrator file in InDesign Adobe CC 2014

At my job we link our illustrator files in the indesign files. We use arrow in illustrator to show the points between measurements. Once we view the file in indesign under the high quality print view option the page bugs out and the illustration covers the page with white and shows fragments of what is actually on the illustrator file.

Let me continue this thread – I have the same problem. Just cant get it to work....
Attached are the vp interface and how it looks in AE. I have back, left, rigth, ground and top walls, just like in every turorial I´ve watched, but for me it doesnt work.

  • Problem when I click the "browse to file" icon in the property inspector

Please somebody help me. I am having a problem with Dreamweaver. When ever I click on the "browse to file" icon in the property inspector, it opens up a full size window on top of the Dreamweaver screen that can't be resize. This problem just started. I have shut down my entire system and restarted it and I am still having the problem. Can someone please help me. Thank-you

When irregular things begin to happen in DW, it's usually caused by a corrupted cache file.  Below you'll find details on how to delete it.

  • Illustrator cc does save file icon

Small issue, but when saving a file, it will not save the file icon to show the file type (in this case a illustrator file).

    I attached an example.
As you can see, the illustrator icon is missing. CS6 illustrator icons show up just fine. Create PDF editable file box is unchecked.

  • Relink Illustrator files problem

I've never seen anything like this:
I have a project created in CS4 (unknown exact version) outside my company and I need to continue work on the project.  Project and assets shipped over on a firewire drive.  Almost 400GB of stuff, so just to verify before I start copying to my system I open the project (in CS4) directly from drive and quickly check things out.  Everything seems okay.  Copy drive contents.  Next day I open the project in CS5 on my system.  CS5 informs me my footage is missing so I relink one file and AE finds everything else.  However, almost all (but not every) Illustrator file is relinked as the 'wrong size'.  That's the best I can describe it.  Masking done on the ai files is completely wrong, animations don't work because of this, etc.  I though, okay I'll try opening in CS4.  Same deal.  So I spun up the firewire drive and opened the project from there to make sure I wasn't crazy.  Everything is fine.  ?  So I'm crazy.
My next thought was that the import settings I last used to import ai files as a composition must be hosing things up.  But I get no choice when relinking, so I imported one layered file from another project as a comp using retain layer sizes then relinking (didn't fix) and then imported as comp using document size (didn't fix). I tried relinking to the files directly off the firewire drive and that didn't work in either CS4 or CS5.
What's the MOST puzzling to me is that if I open the original CS4 project off of the firewire drive and relink any one .ai file to THE SAME files on my system's drive (in the same directory structure, etc.) the problem appears.  If I open the original project off the firewire drive in CS5, the project is fine too but I same probelm with relinking to .ai files on my system.  So for now I'm working off of the firewire drive.  Not ideal for sure but I'm getting by.
I would entertain any thoughts anyone wants to offer up.  Maybe I've missed something obvious, but I've done similar projects plenty of times and not seen any issues like this.
    More details:
    Mac 10.6.4   2 x 2.8GHz Quad
    6GB RAM
    CS4 9.0.2.42
    CS5 10.0.1.19
Client's Firewire drive: LaCie 1TB external
System storage location: Fibre channel shared RAID
Project has ProRes 422 HQ 1920 x 1080 29.97 QT footage and Illustrator files as assets
Don't know how or what version of .ai files were created in
Illustrator files have been masked/animated so when I relink files on my system as above, the masks are all wrong vs. the ai file dimensions
Every Illustrator file I've opened is a single layer document (there are hundreds, not tried EVERY one, but every one in project is single layer, not comp
Importing as Composition with retain layer sizes OR document size makes no difference in this issue

Thanks so much for the swift reply.  I was afraid of something like that- it is obvious the bounding box is being reset, I didn't know the proper terms.  I'm a Illustrator idiot for the most part.
I have not tried to do a collect (that's not how it was sent to me- it was just a straight copy of their project/folders) but will try that and report back.
At least I'm able to work off the drive okay.
