Illustrator file so big it slows down everything

So i made a 30 page e-book in illustrator, the project file is 81MB but whenever i open it, it takes 20 minutes for it to start actually being able to work with, and slows down my computer and i cant do anything.. does anyone know how to fix this??

Put some pages in another document.
But then you'll need Acrobat to put the PDF together.

  • Contacts slowing down everything

I am using a macbook pro with Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DD. Processor  2 GHz Intel Core i7 I just upgraded to mountain Lion and now contacts is slow and slows down everything. I am trying to merge duplicats and it keeps spinning and spinning. What's going on?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Xorg-server-1.2.0-2 high load, slows down everything

    I've just updated xorg-server.
After xorg started, the system is very slow... as if everything works in slowmotion. The load of X (as seen in top) is very high and slows down everything.
I've had this problem with all the beta and RC versions of xorg-server-1.2.0 that I've compiled myself. The version I'm using now from the repositories (1.2.0-2) has the same problem.
This problem happens with kernel 2.6.19-ck and 2.6.20-ck, I haven't tried other kernel versions.
Turning off EXA (that means using XAA) and/or turning off composite in xorg.conf makes X quicker (the load is also lower), but still slower than normal (with EXA, composite and xorg-server-1.1.1).
My problem is probably the same as described in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29661
    My system:
    AMD Sempron;
    Ati Radeon 9500 using the open-source driver;
    glibc-2.5 compiled myself;
    kernel-2.6.20-ck1 compiled myself;
    kde*-3.5.6 compiled myself;
xorg-server-1.2.0-2 and all the libx*, xf86*, libdrm, libgl-dri and mesa are the newest versions from the repositories.

Alright, downgrading wasn't the solution I was looking for, so I took the path to darkness and installed the most recent proprietary ATI drivers (8.34.8). Because the laptop has some ACPI issues I have to apply two patches which in turn require a custom kernel. Needless to say the Arch fglrx driver packages don't work with this kernel. So, here's what i did:
    1) fetched the proprietary drivers from ati.com
    2) run them, looked in awe at the error message
    3) went here: http://cvs.archlinux.org/cgi-bin/viewcv … root=Extra and fetched the fglrx-kernel-2.6.20 patch.
    4)
    cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/2.6.x
    make clean
    rm -r .tmp_versions
    cd ..
    patch < /path/to/fglrx-kernel-2.6.20
    ./make.sh
    cd ..
    ./make_install.sh
    modinfo fglrx
    modprobe fglrx
    lsmod | grep fglrx
    5) Use aticonfig --initial to adapt /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    6) Restart X
I hope suspend is still working...

  • Large Photoshop file has caused system slow down.

I have Dual 2.0Ghz G5 which has worked very well since I got it last Spring. Just recently however I've had some slow downs. There are a number of things that I've noticed such as more frequent spinning beachball and font redraw issues.
These issued started since I was working one a massive Photoshop file. I was doing work on a Trade Show booth which eventually resulted in a 10Gb Photoshop file! I realized I probably should have taken steps to reduce the size of the file but that's neither here nor there. Despite the size of the file I was still quite impressed with the performance of my machine. That said, I've found the general performance of the machine since working on this file to be diminished.
I've done all of the typical maintenace items such as repairing disk and permissions via Disk Utility, clearing caches and running Maintenance scripts using Cache Out X, MacJanitor and Tiger Cache Cleaner, but still the performance of my machine has taken a hit.
It's only since this has happened that I've started launching Activity Monitor to try and determine if there is something obvious going on which is hogging resources or not. This for me has raised questions of what is "Normal" for some common tasks. Presently kernal_task is using under 5% of my CPU with 50 threads running which seems like a reasonable number. But it is also using almost 110Mb of RAM and 1.35Gb of Virtual Memory. Both of those numbers seem quite high to me, but I admit that I never looked at them before so I have no gage as to whether these numbers can be considered normal or not.
By all measures the machine still performs pretty good, but as I use this machine every day I know that it's not the same as it was prior to working on that large file. Is there something else related to Photoshop, temporary files, application caches or anything like that, that I should take a look at?
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Dual 2.0Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Troy,
First I would try using a separate HD for the scratch disk.As PS tries to read and write,it has to compete with the OS as it tries to hit its swop files. If Version Cue is on, turn it off.Get rid of any virus checking apps.Check your Ram.If you haven't allowed Tiger to run its cron scripts on a regular basis, and only do periodic maintenance, I would take the time to do an Archive and Install, or even wipe the HD,zero it and install tiger again. This I realize is a drastic measure, time
consuming, and a pain. But if your whole system is slowing down?? Or if you get a new drive set it up to be your primary drive first and test your system on it before moving any of your PS files over from the old HD.Use the old HD as scratch disk
Have you included the use of other utilies to check your HD? Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro.No Norton utilities allowed.Hope this helps as there are a lot of places to look for the problem.

  • Why do big imports slow down?

    Hi folks
So I have recently had to reimport my entire music collection off of an external, a couple of times.
I have noticed that the importing process seems to slow down at points, with some individual tracks taking aaaages to import.  I can't tell if the import process itself is just generally slowing down for some reason related to memory or something (I am importing ~300GB in one hit), or if it has something to do with particular file formats, or perhaps even tagging.
I don't understand enough of iTunes' inner workings to figure this out myself so I would very much appreciate some insight into this matter from someone who does.
    Thanks!

First of all, thank you for your contribution. You are right to say that I have no need in changing the AI Config every time that the loop runs. But as this is supposed to be a soft-scope, I need to be able to update the parameters associated with AI Start while the loop is running (e.g. trigger level).
I have tried to move the AI Config subVI out of both loops but the error as a result is: "No transfer in progress for the specified source."
I also need a sampling rate of exactly 96kHz. I realize that the laptop clock cannot attain this value. Do you know how I could get exactly 96kHz.

  • Illustrator Files Heavy/Big?

I was on the net this morning researching for a certain trick on Adobe Illustrator CS4. Then came across a few comments regarding Illustrator designers as being slow due to application features. I was disappointed. I have been on FHMX , et al for years. But the marvels in Illustrator are awesome.
For starters, most of us designers finding comfort within the same box of things we were taught in college than continuing education with research. As such we develop a psychological condition that finds Illustrator not worth it. Remember FHMX was discontinued a few years ago. technology will be based on compartibility with Illustrator. How are we gona cope.
There are lots of things that can be twicked in Adobe Illustrator to improve speed and performance of the application. Most basic will be identifying transparencies (they have a habit of increasing file size).
The come to preferences pull the slider under the units and Display preferencies up or down.
On Layers, turn off layers containing PSDs or Tiff if they aren't being touched.
Work in the Pixel Preview Mode and only turn the overprint preview when one wants to investigate underdraws and knockouts
And perhaps, open Photoshop, reduce the PSDs in your file and save as a copy in a different folder. re-link the image with a smaller image (this is proof/ preparatory stage after all). Only relink the high res image when printing out a proof or generating a pdf. Remember also to capitalise/invoking the PGF features in the application by saving a PDF compartible document.
Re-link high-res images only when printing proof or on Final Artwork
Doing step and repeats? Re-link to high-res, work in "Outline Mode" step generate PS or whatever FINAL out-put FF(File Forma) you use.
The final file could be heavy yes, but its worth it because you have linked high-res PSDs, if compensated for dot-gain but in any case this document will be backed-up to save disk space after generating your len files.
Trust me this optimises performance considerably during the proof stages.
    Hope this makes sense.
    Bye for now

  • LATEST APPLICATION SUPPORT ON MACBOOK DRASTICALLY SLOWS DOWN EVERYTHING

I'm having a major problem ever since the latest Application Support update from last week on my MacBook-not intel-the last MacBook model that was made. I was up to 4.8 and everything went fast as always and as soon as i tried to restart computer i had a problem. It would'nt respond correctly and it sort of stalled and i had to shut it down and when it restarted it took FOREVER to come up that i thought it crashed but it was just taking FOREVER. Now all programs are running very slow and i hear clicking in my macbook like it's trying to do something. I do know of another with this problem and IT IS A PROBLEM.
If you can't trust APPLE, who can you?
    Any ideas please

I would except for the fact that it doesn't have anything to do with the router. If I connect another Windows machine in place of the Macbook the network is fine. The second I connect the Macbook is when the lag kicks in. Its almost as if something is running in the background killing out the internet. I have seen this before with the Mail program and of course was the first thing I closed but still no changes.

  • Illustrator File Too Big

I am trying to design handbags in illustrator. We have made patterns out of fabric jpegs to use as fills, and have our graphics embeded in the file. Our files are so huge we are having problems printing and saving the files. Any solutions? Will just having the raster images linked and not embedded help us enough with file size? Is Illustrator even made to do this sort of thing? Attached is a file example.

Turning off PDF Compatibility and using linked images is definitely your best bet. You might also consider creating a smaller, seamlessly tiling pattern of your textures instead of larger texture images, and then creating a pattern swatch out of them. The process does require embedding the image, though, so unless there was a huge difference in physical size between the original texture image and the smaller tile image, it might not be worth it.

  • I looked on my C:\ for plugin-container.exe and deleted the file as it kept slowing down my computor, however now when I load firefox it crashes, how can I re-install this plugin to disable it properly?

My computor had been overly slow which was not normal when looking at processes running in task manager I found plugin-container.exe to be using alot of memory. I looked online and found that this was an update of firefox which was not essential, I then looked on my C:\ drive for the application and deleted it hoping this would solve the problem as I could not find it when looking at my firefox plugins. However now when I open firefox it quickly crashes, how can I reinstall this? Do I need to reinstall firefox completely or is there a more simple solution? I have done the firefox plugin check and it can find no problems.

Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.
If you want to disable plugin-container, see the section on "Disabling crash protection" at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins

  • Every time I start up FireFox I get an "Unresponsive Script" message, is there any way to fix this as it's slowing down everything

    Here's the message I get:
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
    Script: file:///Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/components/nsBrowserContentHandler.js:291"
I've tried deleting firefox and re-downloading and installing it but it's no help.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Elements 12.1 Organizer slow and locks up.  Slows down my entire iMac.

I have an iMac running OS X 10.9.2 and have downloaded the update of Elements 12.1 and also shut off all of the media analysis functions and organizer runs so slow it is ridiculous.  It takes 10 minutes to move one file from one folder to another.  It also slows down everything on my iMac to a crawl.  Hard drive sounds like it is running continuously and the the spinning rainbow of death when doing very basic functions.  I've had to go back to an old Bridge software until this can be fixed.  I would return the whole thing since 12 doesn't seem to add much to my old version 8 in functionality and there are a lot of poorly place UI issues in expert mode.  I'd like to use the software, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any ideas?

    Hi,
Please try repairing and optimize your catalog.
You can do this by: File > Manage Catalogs. Here you can both the options.

  • 4.0 upgrade made my computer slow down and stall. Is there a way to speed it up or do I have to uninstall it?

The upgrade to 4.0.1 slowed down everything considerably on my computer like: start up, going to another page, searching, and even logging off can take up to 10 minutes to shut down. I also have an even worse problem with the pages hanging.

Apple does not and never has supported downgrading to an earlier version of iOS.
    Hope this helps

  • Published motion template slows down FCPX

Hi, I have published a simple snow effect made in Motion 5 to FCPX. Every time I try to add the effect to a clip in FCPX, it slows down everything and I get the beach ball spinning. If I switch off the effect everything goes back to normal. What is the deal? Ant suggestions?
One more thing, I have an Imac 10.6.8 early 2010 2.8 i7 8gb. FCPX uses all the ram available when rendering, etc. I thought that you need only 4gb as minimum req. Do I need more ram? I just use it for simple videos, I'm not a pro, but at times it gets really annoying when the imac slows down.
    Thanks,
    Andrea

It depends on what the Motion template is doing.  If it's doing a lot of work, which is very easy to make a Motion project do, it will grind things down.  The minimum specs of FCP X are for doing minimum work.  I'd never touch FCP X, and especially Motion 5 with anything less than 8GB RAM.  But more important is the graphics card you're running.  What card are you running?

  • PSE 10 system slows down when adding files to catalog

I recently switched from PSE 3 to PSE10 and had issues converting the catalog.  I never did resolve those so I decided to start with creating a new catalog in PSE 10.  My first session of adding photos worked fine.  When I restarted the task the next day, I was asked in participating in making the product better by sharing information about my use with Adobe.  I agreed to participate and very quickly noticed that my computer slowed considerably when adding photos from my hard drive.  The process still worked but I experienced a dramatic increase in the time it took for photos to be added (e.g. the cursor spins for a couple of minutes while the task is working).  I went under my account preferences and opted out of the product participation program but the problem has persisted.  I rebooted the computer to see if that would help but it has not.  I have turned off all media analysis and both optimized and repaired my catalog and while this has provided some improvement, there are still instances where the system slows down.  Now it seems that every other folder's worth of pictures (does not matter how many photos) I add causes this delay.
I appreciate any help anyone can provide in determining why this slow down keeps occuring.
FYI, I am running a new Windows 7, 64-bit system with 8GB DDR-3-1066MHz, and 2 TB hard drive.

Have you also edited the Preferences (Performance) to increase the amount of RAM that PSE can use?
Do you have many background processes running?  Having a single HDD means that everything running on your computer has to wait in the queue for disk access.
How many photos are you importing?
What file types are the photos?
    How large are the photos?

  • How do I fix a Safari application that slows down and freezes everything?

Apple called last fall and said my particular Mac had a hard disk problem and they replaced it at the Apple store in late January 2013.  I backed up the information on an external harddrive and used Time Machine before to transfer all the information to the new drive. Everything worked well and I finally put on Mountain Lion at 10.8.4.  I also have Carbonite as a backup and it apparently was not enabled when I transferred the files until early May.  In early May I had not used my iMac for about a month and when I started it I found about 40 named file folders on the Desktop that were empty.  Some of those had named items in them but when I clicked on them they would dissappear.  The actual files did exist and were not effected when I dumped the apparent alias folders. Safari started and would be ok at first but if I went away for an hour it would slow down.  I took it in to the Genius Bar at Apple and they ran some tests and got rid of MacKeeper which they felt was causing the problem.  I got my Mac back home and it still started slow but worked well at first and then started going slow.  If I opened Word it would also start working at a slower speed.  I needed to force quit Safari and the Word progran in order to quit or restart the Mac.  I got an appointment for the next day and they ran all sorts of tests and the hard drive was working normally. They tried tweeking different areas and sent me home again.  When I started working again it did the same thing, I would start out fine and eventually slow down and needed to be force quit to get out of it. A message came up indicating my MasOSX startup disk had no more space available for applications memory.  I took it in a third time and the Genius went to the Activity Monitor and the Safari PID was 221 and %CPU 107, Threads 21 Real Mem 2.73 GB, Virtual Mem 22.00 Kind, Intel (64).  I had no idea what that meant. I went home again and it still ran slow and couldn't run the programs for any length of time before it ran slow and affected the other programs so they would only quit if I used Force quit.  I took it in for the forth time an they decided to keep it overnight. They ran ASD first to rule out memory.  They noticed during the appointment the computer was slow to perform normal tasks such as showing boot options, booting into user, bootingto external user.  If the ASD passed then they would perform erase and install and only restore users and application files from backup drive.  They did this on Wed and Thur. night and I took it home Friday night, June 14 and it still has the same problem. Typing this message right now means typing and waiting for the words to appear.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
