Illustrator files dissapear after saving files

hi
we are all working on a network, mac computers all running mavericks. It started to happen few days ago that .ai files dissapear after editing and saving.
any solution?
Thanks!

gonzalom,
It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

After I keep the AI file open, making some modifications which I don't want to save, so I close the file and click "Don't Save".
Even though I clicked that, the file's modification time is changing.
(The modifications I made are not there, so it's not really saving but why the date is changing then?)
Please find the cause of it! Thank you!

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

  • Illustrator files containing graphs corrupt and will not open after saving

I have created a series of graphs in illustrator and after saving when I try to reopen them, I get the following error message:
Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand. Offending operator: 1#INF
This happens whatever format the file is saved in.
    I am using CC.
Any ideas why and how to prevent it happening in the future?

    vnqaa,
If you are saving elsewhere than your own harddisk, that may be the cause. Otherwise, something else has obviously corrupted the files, possibly related to graphs.
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way.
Here is a website where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,

  • Illustrator CS6 is not saving files properly.

I'm having issues with Illustrator CS6 (16.0.0) saving my files properly.  Let me give you some background here.
I work for a company that manufactures fishing lures.  I have to create the product cards that these products are to be packaged.  I use Illustrator CS6 to create my cards and I save a master file that includes the original text.  From there, I save the file as an Illustrator CS3 file since most printers I dealt with don't have anything versions higher than CS3.  I take these cards and convert the text to an object so that no one has to deal with fonts or mismatched font errors.  After this, I create a PDF of that same file so that my contacts at the print shop can see the card files and keep a reference for themselves.  On several occasions now, I've gotten emails from my clients saying that they need the necessary fonts to print these cards.  I check my files that should now be all objects and its back to being font text again.  I double check these files beore sending them but if I should have to close out these files and work on another project, then come back to files I've working on.  The objects are now back to fonts again.  All the while, I'm saving my progress.  I've been bitten too many times on this in the past, so I'm a saving freak.
I'm using an iMac (2011) 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 16 gig of RAM, 2 gig AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics, several hard drives (most being network drives) including the 1TB HD that came with the computer, MacOS 10.8 (Mountian Lion) - the same occurs with any flavor of MacOS 10.7 (Lion) too.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Wayne,
You have used Type>Create Outlines, with no live Type left behind (after saving the original artwork, of course), no?
What if you Save As PDF, thus embedding the font(s), and they take it from there?

  • Adobe bridge crashes when saving illustrator files

    Hi there,
We are developing custom connector using Adobe Drive SDK for our DAM system, the integration with CS was working fine, we recently updated Adobe Drive to 4.2, and we are encountering bridge crashes when saving illustrator file. It didn't happen with older version(4.0.2) of Adobe Drive, not sure why. I pin point the part that causing the issue: in our custom connector, we have READ_XMP_METADATA capability which we need to display the thumbnails and previews, and in the ftp sample connector, this capablity is not included originally, so the issue does not happen, but if I add this capabilty, the crash issue happens as well. If we exclude this capablity from our connector, this crash issue doesn't happen.
We noticed this only happens when saving illustrator file, not photoshop or indesign, and it seems that only in illustrator, when save, and the bridge has the current file folder showing, we are seeing there are twice folder refreshes, and usually it will crash after the second time. In photoshop and indesign, we don't see folder refreshes. If switch to other folder, the crash won't happen. We tested on both windows and Mac, on Mac, this seems happen less often. Another thing we noticed is in debug mode, or we have many debug logging turned on, the crash happens less often, if it is deployed with no debug logging, the crash happens almost everytime. So we are guessing it might be some synchronization problem.
Could you please advice what's the cause of this issue?
    Thanks,
    Katherine

    Has it ever worked?
What kind of files are they and where do you save them?
Is a printer connected, set up and turned ON?
Have you already tried resetting the preferences?
Generally it's not a good idea to just save old files, because then some artwork may be automatically flattened. Illustrator will save the file to the old version file-format and if you used new features in-between, those cannot stay live in the old version file format.

  • Old Illustrator file, revised to new, saved to pdf, reverting back to old Illustrator file

After making a new Illustrator file from an old one, then saving it as a pdf, the new Illustrator file reverts back to old one. I have been using the pdf to make the Illustrator file again (luckily I've saved it as editable) but I don't always want to add this extra procedure. Does anyone have this issue or any clues on how this happens and how to fix the problem?

when you made your changes and then saved as, you saved your changes to a new file. your original file closes without saving and the open file in illustrator is the new one (in your case the PDF).
evertime you save as you are making a new file without affecting the old file.
you should first save your changes and then save as. but after the save as, the opened file will no longer be the original file.
if you do a Save As Copy. then you will be saving a new file which will be closed and your original file will remain open.

  • SAVING AN ILLUSTRATOR FILE AS A TIFF IN PHOTOSHOP

I´m designing  a billboard on illustrator and its  very big, the printing company is asking me to send the file as a TIFF. I did the design on a scale 1-10 because the real size of the billboard is 15mts X 6mts, now I have to convert the artwork into a 7.5mts X 3mts with a 300 resolution and save it as a Tiff. How do I do this in photoshop and how do I save it as a Tiff? what is the aprox. final file size as a Tiff. And one last question, what format should I use to save the file from illustrator. After saving the file do I have to open it or place it.
    Thanks, I really need HELP!!!

You can save your IA file as a tiff directly from IA using File>Export.

  • Can you edit text after saving your file as pdf

I have recently created a letterhead in Illustrator.
Is there a way to change a person name and title after saving it as a pdf file? I heard something about creating a form in Acrobat professsional.
I need to print out a letterhead with different peoples name and title. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Can you edit the text in Acrobat Reader?
Yes, if you use Acrobat Pro to save the PDF as a Reader-enabled form.
    1. Create your letterhead in Illustrator (or whatever). Leave design space for, but do not create text objects that you want to be editable.
    2. Save as PDF.
    3. Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro. Use Acrobat's Form tools to add text fields whereever you want the end users to be able to key text.
    4. Select the Enable Reader Usage Rights command in Acrobat to make the form fields edtiable in Reader. Save the file.
Recipients of the PDF can now open it in Reader, edit the content of the fields, and save the file with their edits.

  • Sizing PSDS for After Effects / Preparing Illustrator files for After Effects

    3 questions
For the longest time I have been told when importing PSDs to
After effects, in order to keep circles circles (proper ratios) I had
to make a 720 540 PSD file and then crunch it down to 720 486. Then import the file to a D1 NTSC 720 486 after effects comp and everything works fine. And it does and always has
I have now been told otherwise. People claim they view in DV NTSC view
in Photoshop at 720 486 and then just import to a 720 486 DV1 After
Effects comp and everything is fine.
That view mode in Photoshop is for viewing purposes only though so this
confuses me. Sure you can sit there and stretch your picture to look
right in that mode but that doesn't make sense. Going 540 to 486 is
    quicker.
But one weird thing I noticed is if you save your PSD with the NTSC
view mode turned on it will automatically import to After Effects with
DV NTSC comp settings. Otherwise it will import into a Square Pixels
    comp.
So to simplify my questions are the following.
    1. Is there a way to avoid creating a 720 540 PSD and then crunching
down to 486? And somehow keep circles circles and photographs not
    stretched.
    2. Why does the DV viewing mode in Photoshop effect the importing into
After Effects if it's just for preview purposes?
That said I like that viewing mode in Photoshop because when I do my
720 540 to 720 486 crunch I can see that everything will look fine.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. I've been fine doing what I'm doing but for the last couple years I have been told there's a quicker way and haven't found anyone who knows.
And my final question #3 is
How do you import an illustrattor file into After Effectcs with
layers? I know how to bring sa photoshop file in with layers but everytime I import an illustrator file in , it comes in flat as one layer.
Thanks very much to those who can help.
    J.

    >Is there a way to avoid creating a 720 540 PSD and then crunching
    >down to 486? And somehow keep circles circles and photographs not
    >stretched.
Not really and then "crunching down" is very much a matter of point of view. The real question is: Can you accept the variations e.g. in antialiasing introduced by creating your work with non-square pixels in Photoshop. Apparently doing so will affect horizontal sampling more than vertical and as there is a difference in how AE and PS deal with these matters, the result would be different. It also extends to the matter of how practical it would be to work with such files if you need to move them to applications that don't provide PAR correction...
    >Why does the DV viewing mode in Photoshop effect the importing into
    >After Effects if it's just for preview purposes?
It doesn't. The people told you only half the facts. Photoshop's PAR correction is just for viewing purposes, that's true, but it does not mean that PS itself would be unable to deal with non-square pixels. Whenever you create a files based on such presets, PS will correctly embed that information for saving, hence programs like AE that are able to extract that information, will use it to correctly interpret items.
    >How do you import an illustrattor file into After Effectcs with
    >layers?
You can't. In the strict sense Illustrator has no layers, only objects and groups and since they can be infinitely combined in the funniest ways, it's a hell of a thing to read them right. Maybe in CS5 after all these years... (or even later).

  • How do I edit an illustrator file saved as a jpeg?

I have an assignment I'm working on, in my color theory class. I saved the file for web, but I didn't save the illustrator file as a copy to edit. Is there a way i can edit the original image, and reopen the layers?

So you exported the file from the Save for Web dialog and then closed the AI file without saving? If that was the workflow, then there is nothing you can do except recreate the file.

when saving my illustrator file to a pdf it doesnt show all the artwork ie boxes are hidden in the pdf or only showing part of them. Even some text is hidden. I have flattened the artwork so everything is in one layer. How can I fix this?

    Hi John
I have indicated on the attached jpeg where the problem is, basically a line of text is missing at the top and part of the feeding diagram is missing. I created the artwork in different layer and then flattened. All text has been converted to outlines, however the areas being affected have no transparency, I have used solid fills or no fills. I get the same result when I export the file as a jpeg. Hope you can help.

  • Can't open PSD files after saving them

I haven't ever had this issue before and now have had it twice in the last week or so. I scrap all the time and now after saving the file as a PSE, when I go to reopen from inside Photoshop Elements 7, it's telling me it can't be opened because it's not the right type of file. Any suggestions. I am using Vista but of course have been using the same computer with no problem up until now.

I figured it out myself. Both files I could not reopen were named for teachers. So they were Mrs. so & so. The period in the file name was causing it not to be saved correctly I suppose. When I restarted the Layout again and saved it, I saved it without the period and then no problem at all. Just wanted to let those reading know...
