Illustrator files from China & output issues

I just need to bounce this off of someone - we received several files (40 in fact) from China for Wal Mart -
My Rip would not accept the pdf files created from these Illustrator files.
They were created in Ilustrator CS4 in China and opened in Illustrator CS4 (here in the US) and saved as a PDF per my specs
The input would fail just at the point that color information was being gleaned from the file -
We sent these files to Screen and they ripped them and sent them back to me (they used a newer workflow) - these files went through fine -
Today I asked our client to send one of the original files and all linked images (they were embedded in the ai files I had received originally so I couldn't dig in and get any onfo)
When looking at the images (photoshop eps files that opened in mac preview with a double click - however, when opened in Photoshop there were guidelines drawn so I feel it began as a photoshop file) used in the file, they all had Japan Color 2001 Coated color profiles -
Now my question is this - is it at all possible for that to have hindered the ripping of these pdfs?
PDF's that would not rip were opened in Pitstop and flattened, "preflighted" and repaired all errors in an attempt to get them to go over - final preflight in acrobat 9 & pitstop indicated there were no problems -
any ideas? Is there a software incompatibility going on here?

I know that this thread is pretty old but as the OP I wanted to provide an update.
We finally discovered what the problem was - however, we still don't know exactly why unless it is because our workflow is so old.
I ended up splitting the file in question into several files by color. Fortunately many of the colors were overprinting each other so trapping was not an issue.
All colors went through just fine except ONE.
I opened that file back up in Illustrator and simply changed the swatch color to a different spot and guess what - it went through just fine.
I assume that there was something about the original swatch that Trueflow gagged on.
Coincidentally, my old boss called me that same week with a problem he had getting an Illustrator file to process in his Harlequin rip - turns out that the issue was similar - a pattern swatch in the file was preventing the file from ripping.
I know it's a little late - but should anyone come across a similar issue the swatches may be the problem, particularly if your rip is an older one - as you know, we don't all have the luxury of having the latest and greatest equipment to work with, particularly with the economy being what it has been.

  • Placing an Illustrator file from a newer version into an older version of InDesign

    Is posible to place an Illustrator file from a recent version (like Illustrator CS6) into an older version of InDesign (like InDesign CS5)?. I don't have the software right now to test it so I want to be sure.

    Should be fine.

  • Problem opening Illustrator files from Bridge

    I recently installed cs5.5 and can no longer open my Illustrator files from within Bridge.  When I double click on the file in Bridge, it switches to Illustrator and the hour glass appears for about 5-10 seconds before switching back to the selector tool, but the file never opens???  The only way I can open Illustrator files now, is to do the File>Open command within Illustrator.
    I'm hesitant to reinstall CS5.5 because it took so long the first time.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks
    Paul

    It only seems to affect ai files.  I am able to open psd files from Bridge.
    I just discovered that I am also unable to "place" ai files in InDesign.  The same thing happens - I go to File>Place, find the ai file, double click the ai file, the hour glass appears for a brief moment then disappears, but the file doesn't get placed.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Anomalies in CS5 when using edit original on Illustrator files from within InDesign

    Using the Edit Original function to open up a placed Illustrator file from an InDesign layout, we are seeing some strange things. If the image is placed on page at 100%, after editing via Edit Original it comes back in at a different size. Sometimes it is a silly size (99.999999999% or 100.000000002%), other times 2 or 3% smaller. Is anyone else seeing this - and, if so, is there a fix?

    We are also experiencing this with .psd .ai .eps .jpg files etc. etc. etc.
    Example:
    An image is placed in a box in InDesign, then resized and positioned. In a later stage the image needs editing, so the image is selected and we click on Edit Original. The image opens in either PS or ILL, we alter it (not sizewise, just color). Then we save it and the link in InDesign updates.
    BUT
    The position and the scale of the image most often CHANGES.
    CS5 is soo full of bugs, it is not even funny anymore. We are slowly moving our studio back to CS3.

  • Generate XML file from Billing Output

    Hello,
    We have a business requirement to generate XML file from billing output and the same needs to send to external system for document printing.  In this regard, could you please guide the steps to configure or share the document on how the system to be configured to support the XML file generation from billing document.
    Anticipating a positive reply
    Thanks in advance

    another  option is to configure an outbound IDOC and set the port for this IDOC to generate an XML file.
    here again there will be IDOC control record in the first section of the IDOC XML generated.'

  • Rebuild source files from Webhelp output?

    Today I deleted an unwanted *.css file from my RH9 project with the result that 300 images files were suddenly deleted. Subsequently, I reimported the source Word files to create a new image folder. The result of this, even though I cleared the selection boxes on the "Do you want to over-write" prompt, was that RH9 proceded to overwrite the topics anyway. So I have now lost 20 reformatted topics.
    Why these things happened is not my main concern right now, though clearly it indicates that RH has some serious issues in file handling. (It has happened before).
    Before RH9 deleted and over-wrote all my topic files, I generated webhelp output, and I want to know if I can recreate those topics to my project somehow using the latest Webhelp output files.

    Hi Michael
    I think what you are seeing is typical behavior when you have a linked Word document. And therein lies a bit of an issue. Certainly RoboHelp allows you to link a Word document, but Word and HTML are a bit like mixing oil and water. Word creates things you intend to print. HTML is intended for screen display. Mixing the two results in a bit of a kludge.
    So first, let's try and understand how RoboHelp deals with Word this way. When you link a Word document, you will get a real honest to goodness file folder that is named identically to the document. In the RoboHelp project manager, the icon doesn't look like a folder. It looks like a Word logo with some arrows superimposed that will indicate the status.
    Inside this folder should be your topics that were created based on the Word document.
    I know you said you didn't want the CSS, but the process of bringing Word in will *ALWAYS* create a .CSS file. You may as well learn to simply accept it. The thing is, you don't have to use it. Just ignore it is there. You are free to associate a single CSS of your choice with your files either before or during the generation/compilation process.
    The folder with the name matching the document and ending in _files is normally created when you convert Word to HTML. That's normally where Word will store and reference any images that were found in the document. That's a common Microsoft Word behavior. If you wish to confirm this, just close everything and open Word only. Create a document with some images then choose to save the Word document as HTML and look at what you end up with.
    It's surprising to me that simply deleting a .CSS would blow any images away. Perhaps your Word document was created in a manner where the images are somehow referenced using CSS?
    Cheers... Rick

  • Recovered illustrator file from a hard drive will not open

    Hi,
    I just recovered  some illustrator CS2/CS3 files that were accidently deleted from a hard  drive using Recuva version 1.39.509.  The files were detected as being  in excellent shape and they are recognized as illustrator files in  windows.  But I can not open them!
    Please help!  These are months of work that could be lost!
    Dear Jacob - I dont know why the previous discussion disappeared.  I have tried all your suggestions, including following the instructions for recovering illustrator files... None of them worked!  I am at a loss!  Again, every single one of the recoverd illustrator files can not be read, are supposedly 100% healthy from the softwared used to recover them, but they do not open!  Other files such as word adn images were recovered successfully - I dont understand what is missing here!

    TG,
    As you can see on the pages mentioned in post #3, you can open the AI files as text files, and then you can see and compare the lines of code building each file.
    The first part of each file is the wrapping defining the structure, folllowed by the part defining the artwork. Some of the artwork part may be corrupted, but more likely the structure part at the beginning is (it may be as little part snipped off at the very start).
    So you can copy (at least some of) the part of code defining the artwork from the corrupted file and insert into the sound file after the initial part.
    You may compare the two files and try to work out which part to move and where, using the file parts shown on those Adobe pages as guides.
    I hope this was not too woolly.

  • Export illustrator file from Flash Professional CS6

    Can a background/scene created in Flash profession be exported to illustrator file with extension Ai without illustrator?

    Thanks for trying to help. Some how I managed to do it-but I did it some kind of meatball way. I kept clicking into the image until everything was selected...then I grouped it all and exported as fxg because I do not have the eps option. Somehow it worked, But I have 20 of these to do and this is def not the right way to do it. Hope someone else can wise me up. Thank-you for your help.
    You did not have to group it you could have exported the image or the selection only or the movie in the FXG format (Flash Exchange Graphic) and what is wrong with doing it a newer and better way. FXG is supported in Flash Catalyst as is Illustrator and Photoshop FXG can be exported from Illustrator so you use the file in Flash more readily and though Photoshop does not support FXG that might change.
    I am leased they finally came up with a rational method of exporting to and from Illustrator and Flash.
    Eps was never the right way since Flash is not a postscript application.
    You found the right way and format you just went about it in an unusual and unneccessary way.
    Next time if you want all the art choose image instead of selection if you only need some elements of the art select them export choosing selection only that art will be exported no need to group.
    if you want the whole movie then again choose the whole movie of course that will be a motion type format not FXG.
    Anyway you sort of did it the right way.

    Here is a list of caveats from Adobe concerning Flash & Illustrator vector art.

  • Creating an illustrator file from an indesign file

    Is there any way of exporting or turning an indesign file into an illustrator file. Not by exporting as a PDF or an EPS and then opening that in illustrator. I mean that in one step (through a third party plug-in in indesign maybe) an indesign file can become an actual illustrator file, headers and file icon looks like an illustrator file etc?
    Thanks, Tim

    I'll try and clarify as best I can. My hands are a bit tied with confidentiality rules at my company. I guess the best way to put this is we have an automated workflow using indesign server. We want to supply some of our products as actual illustrator files but all our assets are indesign files.

  • Illustrator files from Bridge creates Clipping mask.

    I would like to use Bridge as a library for my Illustrator files. Only when I pressed shift key when dragging a illustrator file into my (illustrator) document, he translate my Artboard into a clipping mask. Does anyone have a solution?
    I'm working in Adobe Illustrator CS5. Thnk you.

    @ Kurt & Monika, thank you for your help. Indeed, I see more advantages in the use of Bridge mainly because I have my files used in Illustrator and Photoshop.
    Action button is an option, same as the "Edit Clipping Path" button at the top of the control bar. Open a file is also an option.
    I was just wondering if I overlooked an option for better storage of my files. Thnk for youre time.

  • Problem in reading an Image file from a Output Stream.

    I am having problem reading a JPEG file. Actually i am sending JPEG file using UDP from the client. I am using this code to convert to a byte array to transmit the file:
    DataInputStream inStream = new DataInputStream(new FileInputStream("src/Bgamex.jpg"));
    String str1 = inStream.toString();
    byte[] bindata = new byte[65500];
    bindata = str1.getBytes();
    On the server side, I am using these lines to convert the bytes to a file again but it seems to be that its not working. Its making file but with a bigger size & like garbage in it, showing nothing:
    byte[] buf = new byte[65500];
    // receive request
    DatagramPacket packet = new DatagramPacket(buf, buf.length);
    socket.receive(packet);
    buf = packet.getData();
    java.io.OutputStream fos = new java.io.FileOutputStream("Bga.jpg");
    fos.write(buf);
    Could somebody lemme know the problem in converting the file.
    Thanx.

    I propose you to perform this simple test to see by yourself:     final String BIN_FILENAME = "somebytes.bin";
        byte[] bin = {5, 4, 3, 2, 1};
        FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(BIN_FILENAME);
        out.write(bin);

        out.close();
        byte[] bindata;
        DataInputStream in1 = new DataInputStream(new FileInputStream(BIN_FILENAME));
        String str = in1.toString();
        in1.close();
        bindata = str.getBytes();
        System.out.print("Bytes read with in1>");
        for (int i=0; i<bindata.length; i++) System.out.print(bindata);
    System.out.println();
    FileInputStream in2 = new FileInputStream(BIN_FILENAME);
    bindata = new byte[65505];
    int bread = in2.read(bindata, 0, in2.available());

    Hi Rahul,
    Is it possible for you to get the latest file by comparing the CreationTime of these files other than comparing the file names? If so, you can try the code in Reza’s blog:
    http://www.rad.pasfu.com/index.php?/archives/30-Find-Last-Created-File-in-Special-Directory-SSIS.html
    Alternatively, maybe you can try a free third party SFTP Task available on the CodePlex:

  • INDESIGN GLITCH: Creating an XML file from Indesign Layout - Issue "Using more than one line of GREP" & "Map Styles to Tags"

    I currently create XML from InDesign CC by Mapping Style to Tags.
    - The Paragraph Styles are manually apply to text. These styles include multiple lines of GREP to automatically apply character styles.
    - I map some of the paragraph and character styles to prebuilt tags that have the same name "Map Styles to Tags".
    I have found through trouble-shooting that InDesign is unable to "Map Styles to Tags" for more than one line of GREP. I therefore have to chose which line of GREP to automatically tag and which lines to manually tag.
    Please can anyone help, I need to automatically map tags to at least two character styles in one paragraph via GREP.
    Thanks,

    OK. The best I can suggest is running a Find/Change like this:
    Which will actually apply the character style to the italics (and I would do the bold as well just to make certain). Then run the Map Styles to Tags again, using the Apply by Name. Which will tag the italics.
    I don't know why ID can map to the bold and not the italic character style. It either should do them both (as in this instance) or none at all as the character styles are not actually applied by the grep, just the styling from the character styles.

    Yes, a PDF exported by any application (as opposed to one saved in Illustrator with 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities' selected) is likely to have transparency stitching and clipping masks in its makeup. No version-matching will change that.
    Which leads me to a quote a line posted frequently here in the Illustrator forum: "Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor."
