Illustrator Files Heavy/Big?

I was on the net this morning researching for a certain trick on Adobe Illustrator CS4. Then came across a few comments regarding Illustrator designers as being slow due to application features. I was disappointed. I have been on FHMX , et al for years. But the marvels in Illustrator are awesome.
For starters, most of us designers finding comfort within the same box of things we were taught in college than continuing education with research. As such we develop a psychological condition that finds Illustrator not worth it. Remember FHMX was discontinued a few years ago. technology will be based on compartibility with Illustrator. How are we gona cope.
There are lots of things that can be twicked in Adobe Illustrator to improve speed and performance of the application. Most basic will be identifying transparencies (they have a habit of increasing file size).
The come to preferences pull the slider under the units and Display preferencies up or down.
On Layers, turn off layers containing PSDs or Tiff if they aren't being touched.
Work in the Pixel Preview Mode and only turn the overprint preview when one wants to investigate underdraws and knockouts
And perhaps, open Photoshop, reduce the PSDs in your file and save as a copy in a different folder. re-link the image with a smaller image (this is proof/ preparatory stage after all). Only relink the high res image when printing out a proof or generating a pdf. Remember also to capitalise/invoking the PGF features in the application by saving a PDF compartible document.
Re-link high-res images only when printing proof or on Final Artwork
Doing step and repeats? Re-link to high-res, work in "Outline Mode" step generate PS or whatever FINAL out-put FF(File Forma) you use.
The final file could be heavy yes, but its worth it because you have linked high-res PSDs, if compensated for dot-gain but in any case this document will be backed-up to save disk space after generating your len files.
Trust me this optimises performance considerably during the proof stages.
Hope this makes sense.
Bye for now

  • Illustrator File Too Big

I am trying to design handbags in illustrator. We have made patterns out of fabric jpegs to use as fills, and have our graphics embeded in the file. Our files are so huge we are having problems printing and saving the files. Any solutions? Will just having the raster images linked and not embedded help us enough with file size? Is Illustrator even made to do this sort of thing? Attached is a file example.

Turning off PDF Compatibility and using linked images is definitely your best bet. You might also consider creating a smaller, seamlessly tiling pattern of your textures instead of larger texture images, and then creating a pattern swatch out of them. The process does require embedding the image, though, so unless there was a huge difference in physical size between the original texture image and the smaller tile image, it might not be worth it.

  • Illustrator file so big it slows down everything

So i made a 30 page e-book in illustrator, the project file is 81MB but whenever i open it, it takes 20 minutes for it to start actually being able to work with, and slows down my computer and i cant do anything.. does anyone know how to fix this??

Put some pages in another document.
But then you'll need Acrobat to put the PDF together.

  • Illustrator files CC too big 25-30 min to save

Illustrator files on CC are taking 25-30 min to save and when opening them takes the same amount of time. on Mac. Often when opening the file the rainbow wheel comes on. The files for some reason are about 2GB. How do I fix this as it is becoming a hassle having to waste my class time waiting for the file to open, and then having illustrator shut down and not respond because the file is too big

  • Unable to print some illustrator-files

    Hi,
    •The problem:
I have some illustrator-files I can't print. I already tried a lot of different things to make it print (more info below).
The files I have problems with all use patterns (non-standard pattern-swatches). 1 group of files use a jpg-pattern, another group vector patterns.
The ones with the vector-pattern won't print at all (print spools to printer, printer rips the file (I checked it on the printer) after that nothing happens anymore, it does't get in the joblist). The files with the jpg-pattern prints only 1 of 4 pages after more than an hour of processing. All files are multipage files. Filesizes are between 20MB and 80MB. It's only a minority of files with problems.
    •Illustrator version:
    I'm using CS5, some colleagues use CS4/CS3.
    •What I've tried, all unsuccessful:
    ai:
    -Flattening the layers.
    -Deselected “Create PDF Compatible File”.
    -Used the“delete unused palette items”-action.
-I'm unable to select “Print as Bitmap” while printing under advanced (it appears grey).
    pdf:
-Saving as PDF (helped with a few files)
         Tried different settings:
         -Deselecting “Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities”
         -Different pdf-standard (PDF/X-...)
-Different compression-settings: average downsampling to 600ppi/300ppi/150ppi/..., compression: zip, also tried jpeg.
-Tried printing the pdf-files with Adobe Acrobat Pro and Apple Preview.
-Used advanced>PDF Optimizer in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
    •Printer-info:
    Both netwerk-printers, both Konica Minolta.
    Use Fiery Image Controllers.
    One's a bizhub C450, the other one's a bizhub  C360.
Used another, more professional printer (bizhub Pro C6500) too for one of the vector-pattern files, with no result.
    Most recent drivers are installed.
•Works, but not  a good solution for everyone:
Exporting to jpg, with “use artboards” selected, max. quality.
This works, for CS4 and CS5 this works more or less fine, but in my understanding CS3 can't work with multiple artboards, so that's a real hassle (copy/paste to single pages then export every pages...) So I'm hoping for a normal, more elegant company-wide solution. It's a minority of the files, but still enough to be a serious problem.
Thank in advance for the help!

    Thanks for your reply Mike!
I think you're on to something. The pattern could indeed be to complex for our printers, so rasterizing will be our only option in that case.
The controller for the C6500's specs are:
    Intel Core2 Duo E6400 • 2MBL2Cache • 2.13 GHz Clock Speed • 1GBDDRSDRAM
    • 1,066 MHz Front Side Bus • 160 GB Hard Disk • DVD/CD-RW
    Image of the pattern:
When I said jpeg-pattern, I meant a jpeg I embedded and use as a pattern. So embedded the image (placed, deselected link option), dragged it into my swatch library, and used that pattern. I'll try a psd instead and see if it helps.
Just out of curiosity, as what is an image embedded in illustrator? I noticed before that illustrator embeds them as something else heavier then a jpeg, but couldn't wrap my head around it, is there any way to make embedded images lighter (compress them or something).
    Thx for your help!

  • Trouble saving a pdf from In Design with Illustrator files linked.

I have trouble saving a pdf from In Design. Most of the files i've linked are Illustrator files with size up to 70mb.
I am getting out of memory message   The In Design file isn't that big - about 9mb.
    HELP!!!!!!

It did not help to close and reopen it.
Not sure what you mean with exporting in chunks but if you mean exporting page for page , so it didn't work either.
I think that i'll try to reduce the size of Illustrator files , but I 'm not sure what will be the optimum size for that In Design won't crush again.
Or maybe i should make the presentation in illustrator instead? It take some time to save pdf from illustrator when the original file is about 90mb, but still it works.

  • Corrupted Illustrator files

Recently our IT department copied files from one drive to another on our server. A lot of our files are now corrupted. We are using Windows XP and Adobe CS3. The error I am getting is "Acrobat PRF File Format is having difficulties. Expected a dict object." That is the error I get when trying to open it in Illustrator.
    I have tried the following.
Changing the number in the pref file from 0 to 1 and then holding ctrl/alt/shift when error pops up trick.
Tried placing the file in every program I could think of.
    Tried Distiller.
    Won't open in text editor.
Tried changing from .ai to .eps and .pdf
Normally redrawing isn't that big of a deal except we have a lot of files that got corrupted and that is too much to redraw. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks.

    ms,
Apart from the future precaution of your trying to avoid its happening again by saving to your harddisk rather than externally, as Monika is referring to as a quite likely source of file corruption,
you may try this Recovery Toolbox for free,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
and licence it (for a year) if it proves to work.
There are ways of trying to recover files yourself, but they are rather difficult and hard to bring to succeed.

  • What is the best way to create illustrator files for frames created in an InDesign layout?

Is there a quick way to do that or do i need to note the size of each frame in InDesgin and then input that into the dialog in illustrator. It seems like a waste of time. Is there a better way?
I am new to InDesgin. What I'd like is a way to automatically generate blank illustrator files  to fill in the graphic frames in my layout.
    Thanks,
    John

I have no existing Illustrator files for the project. I'm tring to use InDesign to create a rapid protoype. I may be working backward from what is expected.
If I could generate blanks that are the correct size that would be an easy way to get started on them, but copying the sizes to the new document dialog box in Illustrator is not a big deal either.
I figured that if i could create an Illustrator blank from InDesign that would get me started in illustrator quickly and also place the new file in the frame.

  • Why is my CS6 Adobe Illustrator file so large?

I duplicated one of my previously created CS6 Adobe Illustrator files (28 MB) with photos that have clipping masks. Why is my new AI file now 148 MB in size, when all of my newly linked jpeg graphics total only 9 MB? If I save it as a regular pdf it's 148MB, but if I save this same file with the smallest size pdf format, it reduces it down to only 242 KB. No files are embedded either in my newly created AI file. My business associate working on other Illustrator files experiences this same phenomenon sporadically at times too. It has us both baffled.

But why isn't the pdf embedding the jpegs, and use the file size of the jpegs? Are you telling me that the pdf editing compatibility function is actually converting the jpeg information into a uncompressed format? That's crazy, because all the similar Illustrator files that came before this one, used the same method and similar jpegs in size, and AI file size was negligible (700k to 2 MB size) on those previous files even though pdf compatibility was checked when saving in .ai format.
What's more, I tried resaving that ai file without pdf compatibility and file size is just as large as before. It made no difference. I also resaved those jpegs in Photoshop with the save for Web option. It still didn't make a difference. However, if I save those as pdfs using the smallest file size rather than [Illustrator default] and editing capatibility it make a big difference-down into the KB size range.

  • Illustrator files into InDesign and Editing

    Hello,
I designed some pages in Illustrator that were intended to be coded as a web site, and now the client wants to print them for a trade show.
He's adding content, and now it looks as though there will be 16 pages.
The thought of re-creating, editing and then flattening and saving as PDF 16 pages separately (though using a template), makes my head spin a little, so I'm thinking I should use InDesign so I can have one multi-page document instead.
I've searched and found differing opinions on the most efficient way to achieve this.
One suggestion was to drag and drop from Illustrator to InDesign, but then I lose the text editing capabilities, which I will need because my client keeps making text changes.
I'm a little overwhelmed, and some advice on how best to approach this would be VERY much appreciated! The files are basically just a couple of layered background colors, a photo with a title at 85% opacity and text.
    Thanks for any help!
    Jen

    The thought of re-creating,
    Why re-creating?
Me, I would keep Illustrator files in Illustrator. If you want to put them together to make one big PDF, maybe it would make sense to Place each one on a page in Indesign, but make the edits in Illustrator and update the links in Indesign.
I don't have Illustrator CS4 yet, but I read somewhere that it finally does multipage AI files. So if you have AI CS4 you could combine your files into one file (I think).

  • Updated Illustrator file is ignoring new Layers & content

I've been trying to create a new Flash Catalyst CS5 project based on on an Illustrator CS5 file that I have previously used for a Flash Catalyst project.  However, I've added new layers as well as new objects to existing layers.  On import (into a totally new project), Flash Catalyst is completely ignoring the new layers and objects, but it is updating the changes that have been made to the objects it knew about in the previous project with this Illustrator file...
Anyone come across this before?  Any suggestions for a workaround?  I've tried restarting Flash Catalyst, resaving the Illustrator file, creating a new unrelated Flash Catalyst file, but with no result.  I'll try a reboot and failing that, see if I can locate what passes for temporary files for Flash Catalyst... and get busy with the delete button.

I've finally come up with a solution - it seems that Flash Catalyst and Illustrator were doing something behind the scenes together.  I had to copy the new assets out into a new Illustrator file and then import from that!!!!  Pretty big bug.

  • Display illustrator files

I'm thinking of switching from entourage to mail, but the big drawback is that it doesn't seem to display the contents of an Adobe illustrator file (with PDF content). Is there a way of making this work as entourage does?

Thanks, that looks like it will do the job nicely. I was hoping that there would be a preference that I haven't found. Now I have to decide if I should pay $20.00 or carry on using Entourage until Apple adds the feature!

  • Content of illustrator file is different when opening in and old cs version.

    Hi all!
I have a very awful and urgent problem in my job right now, i design some advertisings that goes regularly from month to month, so some advertisings are just like the last month used but with some data changed.
    My problem:
I have an illustrator file (.ai) saved and created in CS3 with pdf compability, outlines, and files linked and included on the same cd,
but when opening the same .ai file in another machine but with CS2 (the client's PC).. it shows a very old version of the file with ALL linked files embebbed (and those are different that are on the cd!!)., in the CS3 file i saved and recorded on cd i replaced all things of course and re-save it. I don't know what is wrong, but when i open it in another machine (i.e. a Mac) it shows the correct version of advertising. But not with  the client's machine...
In my illustrator file, there is only text outlines and 2 psd. Each PSD have only 1 layer, 'cause they were flattened (thet are actually letters scanned).
So basically: My .ai file, created in CS3 in a Mac,  seems totally different and embebbed when opening in CS2 in a PC.
I hope someone can help me with this urgent matter Thanks a lot everyone!!

In regards to the illustrator file link not matching, there is nothing wrong with the .ai file., your problem is with the filenames on the linked images. Your linked images have the SAME EXACT FILENAME AS THE OLD ones connected to the clients machine. You need to break the link to the old bad files and re-establish them to your good files.
Use links palete Flyout menu >> link information to find the location of the images. Change the name of an enclosing folder, or some other method to break the link to old images. Relink to new images, by placing them next to the .ai file in the same folder, and  open the .ai file.

  • How do I edit an illustrator file saved as a jpeg?

I have an assignment I'm working on, in my color theory class. I saved the file for web, but I didn't save the illustrator file as a copy to edit. Is there a way i can edit the original image, and reopen the layers?

So you exported the file from the Save for Web dialog and then closed the AI file without saving? If that was the workflow, then there is nothing you can do except recreate the file.

  • Low resolution Illustrator file needs to be changed to high resolution?

I created a logo for a client in Illustrator that they were going to use on large format banners.  The file contained one Photoshop image that I  imported into my Illustrator file and changed into a vector object.  I also outlined all type.  The only other items on the logo were colors done in CMYK.  The client now says the overall image was done in 'low resolution' and needs to be in 'high resolution' but I'm confused about what part of the design she would be referring to (as, as far as I know) there are no pixels that would pertain to resolution - (unless the CMYK color builds translate into a problem?).
As she is a new designer for a client (my friend) I'd like to get some feedback before I just ask her what she's talking about and embarrasing her (or me).
    Any thoughts?  Thanks.

I'll note... after reviewing my file, the only other thing I noticed was under Document Setup, the Transparency preset was at 'Medium' instead of 'High' resolution, but here again, I thought this was a non-factor because as far as I know there is no 'transparency' (no jpegs, effects, etc.)... just the vector items that I noted.
