Hi all, I q this is one of the most common problems of the program, you can not preview files in Windows Explorer, you always have to use Adobe Bridge (sadly, because its performance is very slow and heavy) one knows a better way to work without using Adobe Bridge?. Thanks in advance for the replies.

AI files are a proprietary format so it's impossible for Windows to interpret it. Same for third-party image viewers and such. It's simply technically inherent.

Illustrator File Previews are gone Since updating to CC 2014

I know that this has been a problem with previous versions of Illustrator as well, but I am still unsure if there is any fix that I can do on my end or not. I use to be able to preview all of my .ai files with Windows Explorer in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, but since the CC 2014 update I have no previews at all. I know that I can preview files in Bridge, but that really doesn't fit my needs. I do over 3,000 jobs a year dating back 10+ years so searching for previous jobs with no preview is now a pain.
Does anyone know of a fix, or do I have to wait forever for an Adobe update of some sort? Anyone else having this problem?

So I'm the only person this has affected?

Viewing thumbnails of Illustrator files in Vista Explorer

At work I run Adobe Illustrator CS on Windows XP pro. When I set Windows
Explorer to Thumbnail view I get a thumbnail view of illustrator files.
On my laptop I am running Illustrator CS3 on Windows Vista. I can't figure
out how to get thumbnail views of illustrator files in Windows Explorer on
this system. Is there a way?

As I recall, AI 11 (CS) was the last version to provide thumbnail views in Explorer. A nasty conflict with Explorer, however, made it necessary for Adobe to remove the feature.
If you find yourself facing oddball problems in AI 11, such as difficulty saving or deleting files, you would be told by tech support to delete or rename the file aiicon.dll. Unfortunately, that also nukes thumbnail views in Explorer.
The recommended procedure for previewing AI files is to use Adobe Bridge instead of Explorer.

Illustrator files aren't previewing properly in Bridge CS3

I have used bridge for ages and have never had this problem before. However I recently had to reinstall CS3 design suite and now illustrator files wont preview properly - they appear really small and instead of previewing just the art board (as it used to), it previews everything on the document including all the extraneous information I have on my specs layer that I don't need to see. I have looked through all the preference panels and can't find any way of changing this. Help would be gratefully appreciated!

Check your Acrobat Page Display settings in Preferences. They may be set different than the Windows computer. Look at the settings in the "Rendering" area.

Why is my open window not centring the file previews?

Whenever I try to open a file in Illustrator CS6 I have to scale the open window across both of my monitors just to be able to see the file preview in the columns mode. If i with the viewing mode to the iTunes artworks style mode I can just barely see the file preview if I make the window the entire size of my main monitor. How can I fix this? I believe I should have said Yosemite/Column view.
Has the issue appeared after an upgrade to Yosemite?

I can't open or save a file if illustrator needs to open a new window to do so.

I need to save a file as a PDF but when Illustrator needs to open a new window (ie, when I have to select the location the file is saved to) the window opens for a split second before disappearing. It is the same when trying to open a file or any time Illustrator needs to open a new window. The window appears for a split second then vanishes. From what I've tried, it is only Illustrator doing it. Photoshop displays this error: "Could not complete your request because of a program error." when I first try and open a file but will only do it the first time and then it works ok. Indesign is working fine.
I've tried re-installing Illustrator and Photoshop, restarting my computer but the issue is still there. Is there anything else I can do myself or is there a chance it is an issue with my computer?

I am also having this problem. The issue appears with both my rMacBook pro as well as my 2012 imac. Very frustrating.

Thank you! That was it. The option to change it is not available in preferences (though I believe it was in early CS versions). It's hidden in a dropdown menu associated with an icon at the top. It sure wasn't easy to find, and I probably would not have done so without your lead. Thanks again!

How to view Illustrator File Version in Windows XP Explorer windows

On a Mac (Leopard or Snow Leopard) I can add a Version filter to the Finder Windows List Views so I can see what versions my Illustrator Files are saved at and I can see the version and the application that created it if I Get Info on the file.
In windows XP however I cannot see any Version info even if I right click on the filter bar and add the Version Column to filter by. I also dont see any version of the files if I go under a files attributes. The only thing I can see is File Type which will only show me whatever the version of Illustrator on the machine that will open it.
The problem is that I dont want older machines that dont have CS4 to open up CS4 files but there is no way for me to tell which files are CS4 and which are saved down to CS2.

Things might be different in the most recent versions of AI, but you can always look at your .ai file in a text editor, such as Wordpad or Notepad. (I keep desktop shortcuts to both onto which I can just drag and drop files for quick looks.)
You'll have to scroll down a bit if you save with the PDF option, but you should come across some text that tells you what you want to know. It'll typically start off with the text string %!PS-Adobe-XXX.
In this particular example, the application used was AI 12.0.1 (CS2), and the file was retro-saved to version 8. (Yes, the variable name "Creator" is somewhat misleading.)
If you have the DTs or are otherwise prone to hitting keys unintentionally, open a copy of the file in your text editor to make sure you don't accidentally modify the original file.

Organizer not showing previews or Thumbnails. It is only showing hour glass icons. Windows 8.1 OS.

I purchased and installed Elements 13 on a Windows 8.1 PC. I also have the Photographers version of CC (Bridge, Lightroom, and Photoshop). In Elements, I imported my pictures, but they are not displaying the previews in the Organizer window. They showed up at first, but they are converted to hourglass icons when I try to scroll through the pictures. I tried to print pictures, but the picture package function does not work. The hourglass icon shows up there as well, and nothing prints.

I'd delete the preview cache and rebuild - that may help (or it may not).
To do so, exit Lightroom, then delete .lrdata folder alongside .lrcat file.
PS - delete entire .lrdata folder, but do NOT delete .lrcat file or anything else.
(if it has 'Smart Previews' in the filename, don't delete it - just delete the other one).
Then, re-open Lightroom and rebuild previews using Library - Previews menu (optional, but probably worthwhile).
If no better, then you have an system/app problem as opposed to a preview-data problem.

While Googling on this issues I come to know that Illustrator file can be exported in XAML format with the help of a small plug-in, and that XAML file can be use in Microsoft silverlight. Then we can preview our Illustrator artwork on web browser. Also we can select each artwork (line, point, shape etc) on design view (on Microsoft Expression Blend). This is what I required.

Select a couple of .ai files and Get Info on the files. Go to the Open with line and set it to Adobe Illustrator. When it ask if you want it to do the same for this file type answer yes. The OS is probably seeing the file as a PDF and Preview by default is set to open PDFs.

How to set my default application for illustrator files (windows)

I have both illustrator CS3 and CS5 on my windows 7 machine. I want to keep both versions as CS3 is better for converting SVG files.
Windows has CS3 as the default application when opeing .svg files. but I want to change this to CS5. I have tried changing the default program in the normal way,
right click - open with - choose default program...
only CS3 is listed in the programs, so I navigate to CS5
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5.1\Support Files\Contents\Windows\illustrator.exe
but when I click ok, CS5 isn't added to the program list.
I have managed to change the default program for .ai and .eps files in this way and its workeds, but not with.svg files.
Any ideas?

RAW files as thumbnails in Windows Explorer

I've noticed something curious with my new PSE7. When I connect my camera (Canon 40D) to my computer I can see my CR2 files as a thumbnail, but when I copy them to my computer I cannot.
Is there anyway to allow me to see the CR2 files as thumbnails so I don't have to keep shooting with RAW + small JPG?

If you are on Windows XP you can download and install the ArcSoft RAW
Thumbnail Viewer: http://www.arcsoft.com/products/rawviewer/. It does not
seem to work on Vista (64bit). Otherwise get one of the free graphics
viewers, such as IrfanView or FastStone.

Cannot drag, delete or cut adobe illustrator files in windows vista

I am using adobe illustrator cs in windows vista and i get the following error when i try to delete, move or cut illustrator files:
'The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program'
It was working when i first started using it but now it just doesn't work at all.

It's not just a Vista thing. I frequently encounter the problem in both Windows XP and Vista with CS3 versions of Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat files.
I've heard no report yet as to whether this is fixed in CS4.

Illustrator files opening as Preview

I just updated to the Snow Leopard operating system on my mac, and all of a sudden when I click on an Illustrator file, I get a preview...it doesn't open thru Illustrator. How can I fix this? Thanks!

Select an AI file and do a Get Info (Cmd-I). In the resulting windowm change the "Open with " dropdown to Adobe Illustrator, then click Change All to reassociate the files with AI.
