Illustrator Help | Using Image Trace

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/image-trace.html

Is there more than one image? Or is there another object that also gets selected with your select all? Try only selecting the image by clicking once on it. Are the commands in trace then available?

  • Illustrator CC trial not letting me use Image Trace?

    Hi!
I recently downloaded the trial of Illustrator CC to my updated Macbook pro and have come to find that it won't let me use image trace or even pull up any tracing control panels.. I can pull up the tracing workspace but if I try to click "trace image" nothing happens and if I  try to open the drop down presets, again nothing happens.. Under the main drop down menus, image trace or any form of tracing is nowhere to be found..
Is tracing not included in the trial and I just didn't get the memo or is something wrong?
Thank you so much for any help!

    caitln,
You may start on the following, and hope you will only get to the easy ones until it works or someone comes up with something better.
It is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Illustrator CS6 crashing when using Image Trace - Make on Mac OSX

    Hi all,
I have a user on a new mac that is just a few months old. It has all Mac updates and all Adobe updates, has passed all Mac hardware tests (and a separate memory test) and I ran the disk permissions check yesterday.
The issue is that whenever she uses Image Trace - Make illustrator will crash completely. It doesn't give the spinning wheel of death, it just closes. This happens every time on any image file. While we haven't run every possible command on Illustrator I'm sure, this is the only command that crashes the program.
I have tried deleting the preferences file, but it did not make any difference.
On the crash report, it does give me a details option which gives a heck of a lot of info but I don't know what parts are relevant exactly so I'll refrain from posting the entire thing.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi,
Have you submitted the crash log to Adobe? If yes than can you please tell me what ID you used during the submission of the crash log.
If possible can you join the connect session:

  • Stop motion animation help using images from a digital camera...how tricky is this?

I'm teaching a media arts course for the first time, and I'm trying to figure out how to use images taken with a digital camera, import them to Premiere Elements 7, and put them in the timeline without having to shorten the length of them.  As soon as I drag an image from the project bin onto the timeline, it automatically plays for 5 seconds, and I have to try to shorten it to one frame length.  If that's what it takes, this process is going to take a lot of time, because the students are going to be taking several hundred photos.  If I edit them in the preview, it's still just as difficult.  Is there any way to change the settings before I import the images so that they automatically are one or two frames in length on my timeline?  Your help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum.
As Steve points out, setting the Edit>Preferences>Still Duration BEFORE Importing, will get what you want.
When doing Stop-Motion, I find that a Duration = 3 to 5 Frames, works best, but that will depend on the images, how far apart, they were shot, and the exact effect that I want. It might take a little experimenting, to get things correct to both your eye, and to the images from the camera.
Also, Scaling the Still Images, prior to Import is a very, very good idea, and especially so, with Stop-Motion, as you will have lots of them.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - if you are using Transitions, between the Still Images, you will want to alter the Duration of those too, prior to applying them.

  • Cannot fill path correctly after using image trace.

When I pull a regular 2-color photo from the web and use the tracing option, selecting ignore white, then expanding it into a path, it will not fill correctly.  Instead of filling the object created, it fills the entire photo area of the original image.  Here is a screen recording of an example:
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1TufpLZsjupYlFhSS1PMFBhTzg/edit
In the video, you'll notice that the fill option after expanding is marked with a "?".  I'm not sure why.  The goal here is to, after expanding, fill ONLY the image of the cursor.
    Thanks for your help

    CS6?
When selecting "Ignore white", it still creates objects, but doesn't fill them. So you first have to delete unfilled objects, before you can fill the rest of the drawing.

  • Help using image in Flash please..........

    Hi all,
Posted a question the other day and still no answer to solve my problem and it is driving me mad
I am trying to use an image created in Fireworks that has gradients in it (please see attached pic).
For some reason Flash makes the image look real bad. I have tried importing into Flash as a PNG and as a JPEG, it still looks dreadful.
I am now wondering if I can create a Flash document using 'transparency' as a background then import over the image on the website however from what I can see I cannot create a transparent stage that is transparent in Flash, it has to be a colour. Is this the case or am I missing something????
Please can someone give me some idea on how to overcome this.
I cant believe I can make an image in Fireworks that Flash can then not maintain the quality. Seems soooooooo simple but yet doesn't work.
    Helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

    Hi Ned,
Thank you for sorting my other post out, good of you.
Not sure how to post a screen of what I see on here, will have a go.
I will also try your option imports however I am sure I have played and imported every way I can and it still isn't keeping the image clear.
If your able to import my image and it looks fine then I guess I 'must' be doing something wrong!
All I can say is it is like the resolution in Flash is not right. In Fireworks I can increase the resolution to make images better in quality, it seems in Flash I can't so the result, to me anyway, is that the imported image isn't clear.
When I import the image to Flash the beveled highlighted line is not clear, as it should be, it looks slightly out of focus.

  • When I use Image Trace for a large file, it keeps deleting one corner of the file.

I've tried several tracing options and it keeps happening. The image was created in Illustrator, but I need it all on one layer,
so I took it into Photoshop.  Now back to Illustrator because the fabricator needs that format.  Reduced the image size, same problem.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

without seeing the artwork i'm not sure how I would do it.
I might try a script, Turn selected AI sublayers into top-level layers?
or it may be as simple as selecting all and doing a pathfinder unite. but that may or may not cause big issues.
but if it is just a hand full of shapes for a water jet to cut out then that may be a very simple way to fix your problem.

  • Image Trace turned gray?

I'm working on an assignment for my concept stratagies class were we have to design a logo for assigned company. My logo needs a brushed look to it that i could only recreate with image trace. Completely new to this technique and so is my professor. Here's the issue:
Scanned in my tight pencil logo design and saved as a jpeg since there was no other option
Opened in Illustrator and used image trace... default everything except the threshold is set to about 102 or so to get the brushy look... also it's black and white
Extracted the image which gave me the vector that i needed
Selected the whole image to change the color to red and it turned gray.... that's not what I wanted...
Can anyone help me with this problem as soon as possible, I need to be able to change the color of this vector by 9/18/13...

Its possible the object still has its background. Try ungrouping or releasing the compound path. Remove any unwanted objects, then if necessary create a compound path. Keep in mind that any holes in that object is made of paths them selves and therefore require the compund path to create that hole. So when you release the compound path, you may be tempted to delete paths that are required for the overall object to look correct.

  • Illustrator CS6 - Image Trace (Outline)

I'm trying to outline an image. In photoshop, I did find edges (save), then opened the image in illustrator and did image trace. I obtained a perfectly outlined image.
The problem: I can't obtain the same results using illustrator image trace alone.
I've adjusted the advance settings a few times to get the same result but with no luck. Threshhold and corner settings are ok, but I'm getting more paths and noise than I want, with the settings at low/1 respectively.
I also tried the gray scale setting since the image is mostly gray, expand, etc, but no dice).
    Can you help?

The top donut-like shape is your original image, correct?
Hm...since you're not getting the results you want with Image Trace, I would try another approach. I don't usually use Image Trace alone since it isn't a perfect translation to vector. It can be very touchy with some images, this one being among them apparently.
Since it's a pretty simple shape, I would just manually trace it using the pen tool. That way you could also get that middle section filled with gray, and have a lot more control over how your image is traced. It will take a longer time however, so you might just want to stick with your Photoshop to Image Trace technique.

  • Where is the "threshold" setting for Image Trace in Illustrator CC 18.1.0?

I'm using IIlustrator CC 18.1.0 and when I use Image Trace the "threshold" slider is gone. This was actually the single most important adjustment for this tool. Is it hidden somewhere? I attached a screen shoot of my Image Trace window...

  • Vectored images & Image Trace

I am new to Illustrator. I am using CS6. I used Image Trace to turn some .jpgs into vectored images. My printer is saying they are not vectored images but rather that they look like .jpgs that were placed in Illustrator. Every tutorial that I have read and Youtube video that I have watched says that Image Tracing something makes it a vectored image. What am I not getting? Is there something further that must be done after Image trace to turn something into a vectored file? Thanks for any help you can offer and please remember that I am new at this!

By image tracing a .jpg you did indeed turn this into a vector object. But the question is will this vectorized representation of the original image print satisfacirily.
If you were to Image Trace a photograph of yourself, and print both of them and compare, you would probably see the image traced version looks more like an illustration.
So the printer is seeing the image you traced and noticing the images look strange.
Will be your decision to tell them whether to go ahead and print this. Just know that you cannot image trace a low res image blow this up big, and expect this to look liek a hi res image.  If you are ok with this not looking like a photograph, but more like an illustration, then go ahead and tell them about the image trace and that you are ok with this.

  • Image Trace CS6 moving results

When using image trace in CS6, illustrator seems to be shifting the results.  Is there anyway to prevent this.  I have several images that I am tracing along with other vector elements that need to stay in alignment with each other.
The Blue is the location of the original image and the black is the tracing result.  I'm seeing this shift in each of the view modes and regardless of which preset I use.  I've also tried leaving the image linked and embedding the image with no difference.
In addition, I am having a hard time getting black and white images to trace to the same quality I had in CS4.  As you can see I'm getting pinched sections on lines even with a Path setting of 97-100% and Noise of 1 px. I also tried a path setting of as low as 20%, the pinching of the lines was gone, but it was so over generalized that I lost a lot of the other character.
In CS4 I was able to use path fitting 2px Min area 10px corner angle 20 and get this much better result
No shift, the white hole is preserved, there is no pinching of the line.  I keep reading how the new image trace is supposed to be so much better,  but I can't seem to find any evidence of it in a simple a black and white image.
Although, my main concern is the shift, any help getting a more accurate result would be appriciated.

could you post your results with both the original and the trace result?  Black and white logo was one of the first settings I tried.  Also, I should point out that my screenshots are of a zoomed in portion of the image I am tracing.  The image itself has a dpi of 800.  The shift that I see when I do tracing (even at the preset black and white logo) is 0.6mm x 0.4mm.  While this may not sound significant, it does make a big difference in terms of registration with the numerous other elements in my file and is clearly visible at 100% zoom scale.
Also, I am not surprised that it was able to duplicate the sample you showed above in terms of detail, since you were using the more generalized unusable result from my sample.  If you use my CS4 result as your starting point, are you able to capture the detail?
In my sample I also did not use strokes.  Everything is an area path.   That is what makes the differences between the CS4 results and the CS6 results seem more like a bug in CS6.  Also, I tried to set my noise value to its lowest setting and it still removed areas greater than one pixel.  Is there another preference inside of illustrator that controls the image trace options?
I understand that some images need cleaned up prior to tracing and have done that in the past, however, upgrading to CS6 should not mean that I now have to do even more prep work on my images to get the same (or in this case lower quality) results than I have in the past.

  • Image Trace with Document Library palette feature - bug?

I've been trying out the different palette options in Image Trace and I believe I've come across a feature that does not work as the designers intended. In Adobe's documentation, there is very little said about the feature, which I believe is intended to allow you to substitute a custom palette for the palette that would be created by the original artwork that is being traced. It's under the Palette drop-down menu and is available if you've selected the Color Mode. It's called Document Library. In Adobe's documentation, there are these two paragraphs:
    [Reproduced from http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/image-trace.html#tracing_options]
    Palette
Specifies a palette for generating a color or grayscale tracing from the original image. (This option is available only when Mode is set to Color or Grayscale.)
To let Illustrator determine the colors in the tracing, select Automatic. To use the document swatches as a palette for the tracing, select Document Library.
This would be a great feature, if it worked! I have a lot of artwork to trace, it's all in a set yellow-to-green palette, and it would be a big time-saver if I didn't have to change the palette after the trace. Unfortunately, the feature doesn't work as promised. Either that, or I'm doing something wrong.
I've embedded a video to demonstrate the problem, and would appreciate any comments.
Message was edited by: pixelboss to include link to the documentation

    What I started with:
    What I expected
    (but in a different palette):
    What I got:
Do I really need to describe what I don't like about these results?
Since the original experiment, I have tinkered with it and discovered that the more colors I have in my palette, the better. I had three colors; it only used one of the three. With some settings changes I could get it to use two. With six colors, it used four. I was unable to get it to use all six.
I apologize for the poor quality of the original rendering of the video. I have since re-rendered it. Embedded below, but if you still cannot see what is going on, I recommend you click on the direct link and go to YouTube, where you will be able to either use the Large Player feature or make the video full-screen. Hopefully that will make it possible to see more detail.

  • Preserving 'White' areas, but not backgrounds, in an image trace

    Hi there all
I've got a little graphic that I'm working on at the moment. I am trying to trace it using the Image Trace feature in illustrator.
Everything's hunky dory apart from the fact that the original graphic has a lot of white features on it that I want to preserve. These white bits are not bordered so, in the main page of illustrator, they merge with the white background. When I go to use Image Trace, I can either select "Ignore white" which leaves out all of this white detailing, or I can deselect it which means that the trace then includes the white background and the whole image is set into an annoying box.
Does anyone know how I can remedy this? I know in Photoshop, there's that checked background that shows when your work surface is empty. Is there a way of getting this same thing in Illustrator?
    Thanks!
    CF

    CF,
It rather depends on the image.
With Illy, you can use View>Show Transparency Grid or View>Show Grid to see whether there is a background, just as in Photoshop.
In that way you can get rid of that non colour appearing as white, but it will not be included in Image Trace because it is not (included in the image).
But if the image itself contains a white background, Image Trace will be unable to discern that from any other part of the image.
So you may need to have the image in a format without the white background, such as PNG24 instead of JPEG, or with another colour as background.
