Illustrator/InDesign problems with AFP shares on Xsan

Hi,
Has anyone else been having problems with Adobe apps overwriting files on AFP shares that are stored on an Xsan? Errors that come up vary from error -47 to error -5000 and generally mention that the user doesn't have permission.
They do have permission, and things are fine if they save to their desktop then copy to the server and overwrite the file that way. They're fine saving initially as well. Other applications don't have a problem either.
Anyone have any ideas?
Server is 10.4.3, Xsan 1.2.
Thanks,
James

Hi, This have nothing to do with Xsan, because i have the same problems on 3 of my servers, on 10.2.8, 10.3.9 and 10.4.4 with simple afp shares! It seems that Adobe srcrewd up big time!

  • Photoshop/Bridge CS4 problem with AFP shares

    Hello,
I have recently purchased Photoshop CS4 and encountered the following problem: when opening images from a NAS share connected via AFP using File/Open command, Photoshop will correctly display the list of files but Open command in the File open dialog remains disabled after a file is selected from the list. However, I can open the same file by dragging and dropping it from the Finder to the Photoshop Dock icon or later using the Open recent menu command.
Similar problem is visible in Bridge: it will not display the image thumbnails from any of the subfolders in the network share.
I am using Leopard with the latest updates, I have a read/write permissions to the network share and Photoshop/Bridge are the only applications that have problems browsing/opening files from the network share. The NAS unit is a Synology DS-107+ with the latest official firmware.
Futhermore, I have noticed that I can work around the problem by opening the same directory in Finder. After the image thumbnails are visible in Finder, both Photoshop and Bridge will correctly open all files in that directory but opening files from other directories still has the problem.
Does anyone have any idea on what might be causing this strange problem?

This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Problem with administrative share

    Hello!
We have headache-giving problem with Administrative Share in our company.
    Network looks like this:
    1) Server VLAN - x.x.10.1
    2) User VLAN - x.x.11.1
    3) Domain Admins VLAN - x.x.12.1
    Now for that situation.
When we trying to access Administrative share (C$) from Admin VLAN to User VLAN, it's all fine
From Admin VLAN to Server VLAN - all fine
From Server VLAN to User VLAN - problem
    What we found
Our network guy ensured us, that all three VLAN's are wide open to each other
We can't access share on variety of OS - WIndows XP, Windows 7 32/64
Windows share is turned on using Group Policy
File sharing is allowed in Windows firewall
On server we are logged via RDP with Domain Admin accout, which is in local Administrators group on every station on user VLAN
    Share service is running
    Any ideas?
    MT

    Hi,
Is there any error message when you try to access Administrative share (C$) From Server VLAN to User VLAN and can you access other administrative share (F$, G$, H$, etc.)? Can you access Administrative share (C$) From Server VLAN to Admin VLAN?

  • Strange problems with afp since 10.7.3

    Hi every one,
I have a strange problem with afp shared volumes:
-Between two lion systems: no problems
-Between one macbook air under lion and one mac mini with SL: the mac mini succeed in mounting the shared volumes of the mba but the reverse is not true. Notice that it failed with the finder (CMD+K, afp://....) but I succeed with afp_mount command in terminal. I see no log that can help. Note also that the problem arise with 10.7.3: apple has misfixing something?
I already done the following: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700
    Do you have any ideas?
    Thanks for all,

IMHO Apple has messed all types of sharing on Lion. Between Mac to Mac networks and to Windows networks.
Try unchecking File Sharing and then Re-checking it. I have to do this everytime I boot or reboot my MBP running Lion 10.7.2 and .3.

  • Weird error with AFP shares

    Hi everyone,
I am using an OS X 10.8.5 Server with mostly 10.6.8 Clients. The clients usually open, save, copy to and from AFP shares provided by the server. Sometimes it happens that a client gets thrown out of a folder it is currently viewing on the AFP share. Once this behaviour starts it is near impossible to navigate down on the folder hierarchy since you get teleported back 1 to 3 levels. The number of levels depends on how fast you managed to drill down before you get thrown back. So an example would be:
The client views folder A on /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1
You start to navigate to a folder residing inside Folder1. If you now wait for a few seconds Finder will throw you out and back to Folder1. If you mangage to drill a few levels down really fast you might make it to /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1/data/more/here. But then you immediately are teleported back to /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1.
From this point it won’t ever work again until you unmount and remount the share. Sometimes even a reboot of the client is neccessary. It happens with ~10 clients so it is not just one isolated client acting weird. On the Server side I did not notice anything wrong or weird happening. There are no backups, syncs or other tasks running on the server while this occurs. It seems to happen more often when you are using list view (cmd+2), but I have already seen it with column view, too.
I’ve read about similar problems with SMB, but I am really stumped at where to look next. I already ruled out that it’s just with 1 client Mac. Deleting .DS_Store files did not help (not that I counted on that one).
Another weird thing in addition to that is that sometimes the Finder shows folders twice or even more often. These are exactly named the same. Sometimes they disappear when you want to click on one of them.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks
    Björn

I believe I've seen a similar problem in my development.
This was occurring in Beta 2 and I believe I had it happen in Beta 3 as well.
This might be a way to repro the issue?
    1.  Have several collections.
    2.  Follow Robin's post to combine the collections into one:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3c55b873-a0c7-4cc8-9bab-eaf809f62ab0/exporting-data?forum=projectsiena
    3. Change one of the underlying collections - add another column to the collection without using the function 'addcolumn' for example)
What I saw happening is that the 'master collection' would say there was a problem.  To fix it, I simply had to drop off the last part of the function and then add it back (similar to what Ptr is saying in his posting).
The function in this example looked like this:  Collect(MasterBackup, Import1!Data)
By removing Import1!Data and then typing it back in the problem would be resolved.
I hope this helps to add some insight -
    Thor

  • Problem with SMB share

    Hi!
I have a problem when connecting to a SMB file share on a Windows 2003 R2 server (also acting as a Domain Controller for the Active Directory domain) using OS X 10.5.2.
I've just reinstalled Leopard to rule out any problems with messy configuration on the client, but the problem persists. The newly installed Leopard client is not a member of the AD domain at the moment.
When connecting to the server share (with cmd+K in Finder), I have to login using a AD account. The share is after successful login accessible through Finder and I could traverse the folders and read / copy all the files on the share. I could also save smaller files (less than 16 KB) to the server.
However, if I try to save a larger file (more than 16 KB) the files gets created on the server share, but stays a 0 KB. The access to the server share freezes during 60 seconds and the "Copy" window just tells me it has copied 0 KB of the file so far. No data seems to be written to the file at all.
After Finder gives up, the "Copy" windows tells me that "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items".
From time to time Finder has also disconnected the share during problems, and OS X has crashed on me in kernel panic four times when testing. I haven't been able to track down the action triggering these errors yet.
The shares on the server works just fine when using the same username/password from a Windows XP client machine.
I don't see this problem when mounting a share from a Windows XP client in Leopard.
What could be wrong here? Is there some setting on the Windows server that has to be done to work with Leopard? (I've read about the SMB signing, but Leopard shouldn't need the signing to be turned off, should it?)
At the moment I'm having a hard time using the shiny new MBP at work, so any help on this would be highly appreciated!
    Best regards, Jonas Mixter

I have an issue with OSX Leopard (10.5.2) , where by I can't write to NTFS shares on W2K3 servers with SMB signing turned on and IPV6 disabled for the interface.
    To recreate the issue:
Create a folder named test that contains two files one named ._test.txt and test.txt on OSX and copy to an SMB share on W2k3.
This results in spurious errors about permissions and locked files.
Copying a file larger than 4k results in the error:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges or some of the items."
Using mount_smbfs from a shell on OSX results in the error: "Permission denied"
    host:~ user$ mount_smbfs //user@server/share /Volumes/test-smbmount/
    Password:
    host:~ user$ cp test.docx /Volumes/test-smbmount/

I have mailed the developer as he has obviously identified the root problem of the issue and I urged him to share his patch/resolution with Apple in the interests of the user community and a darn nice thing to do.I had a response form the developer to my request. I sent my workaround solution to the developer and stated that in my opinion the pricing for the software seems unnecessarily high based on the functionality it provides and way above what I would be willing to pay to resolve one small issue.
    <developers response>
Pricing is a difficult topic to discuss -- but if you have no use for the product, any price is too much. As for reporting bugs to Apple, they'll listen to customers much sooner than they'll listen to developers. And they have some of the brightest engineers I know. If you report the bug to them, they'll likely have it fixed in the next update.
    </developers response>
I couldn't find away to report the bug myself so I had a friend do it for me. The response I had back from Apple was less than satisfactory.
They believe that the issue is to do with NTFS streams and that a file containing ".com.apple.smb.streams.on" needs to be created and placed into the root of shared volumes. This is not a fix!
If you want to prevent writing the "Apple Double" files to a remote share, enter the following into a terminal:
$ defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
    Problem still exists.

Before Mac OS X, the Mac OS used 'forked' files, which have two components: a data fork and a resource fork. The Mac OS Standard (HFS) and Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) disk formats support forked files. When you move these types of files to other disk formats, the resource fork can be lost.
With Mac OS X, there is a mechanism called "Apple Double" that allows the system to work with disk formats that do not have a forked file feature, such as remote NFS, SMB, WebDAV directories, or local UFS volumes. Apple Double does this by converting the file into two separate files. The first new file keeps the original name and contains the data fork of the original file. The second new file has the name of the original file prefixed by a "._ " and contains the resource fork of the original file. If you see both files, the ._ file can be safely ignored. Sometimes when deleting a file, the ._ component will not be deleted. If this occurs you can safely delete the ._ file.
    </apple double description>
I am not the only one this issue. A quick peruse on http://macwindows.com/ will show that numerous people are suffering and numerous workarounds have been suggested. Sadly none of which work for me. Each work around is stranger than the previous. Such as disabling IPV6 and updating Daylight Savings Time.
The issue lies with the samba integration. I am primarily a Gentoo Linux user and this kind of bug would have been resolved almost instantly if present in open source software.

I was tempted to move this over to the InDesign SDK forum where there are coders, but there isn't a lot of traffic over there, so I'm going to leave this open here with the advice that you probably won't get an answer from anyone here becasue we are, for the most part, not folks who work with code beyond scripting (and very few scripters hang out here, either).
You should cross-post over there yourself and hope someone who understnds the qusetion sees it in one place or the other.

  • Having a problem with family share... it's telling me I can not add my daughter for a year!!!??? this is bullcrap n I need help to be able to add her... does any one have any ideas?

needing help with family share that isn't allowing me to add my daughter for a year!!!

That happens because there is a restriction from changing family groups more than twice per year.  Unfortunately, a number of people have inadvertently triggered this in the process of setting up Family Sharing.  There isn't anything you can do about it on your own; all you can do is contact Apple support to see if they would override this at their end.

  • Illustrator CS4 problem with server

    Hi,
I'm currently using Illustrator CS4 on OX Snow leopard (10.6.2). While I'm connected remotely to a server using VPN tracker 6, Illustrator will freeze whenever I try to open or save a file. It only does this when connected to this specific server and no other adobe application is affected (Photoshop, InDesign). If I disconnect to the server while Illustrator is frozen when opening/saving, it will immediately resume whatever its doing like nothing was wrong.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? I could just run Illustrator while not connected to the server but thats very inconvenient.

One of my users is having a similar issue. If he is connected to our VPN from home, he can't fully launch Illustrator. I would assume that Illustrator would cease to work if he connected to the VPN after launching. He is running 10.5.8 and CS3 with a cisco VPN connected through a web interface. The work around to use one or the other is there, but you're correct saying it's inconvenient. Anyone know a fix on either the Mac end or Illustrator?

  • Photoshop to Illustrator (CS6), problem with linked images

    Hi,
I have a very frustrating problem when importing .psd files to Illustrator CS6. I recieve files from an artist and have to make some sort of pre-print on them, add texts etc..
They are multi layer and upon opening in Illustrator I select Convert Layers to Objects. After that every bitmap layer in the file is converted to a link, and this is where my problems start. First of all it would simply be most conveniant if I had the option to embed all upon import.
But even with this option lacking, I should be able to highlight a link in the Links panel, and select Embed image from the drop-down menu. Unforetunately this option is always disabled, same with the Embed button on the control toolbar when the liked image is selected. Furthermore, the link information option always shows empty name and locations fields, so its impossible to know which files I should attach if I would like to send them to print as links together with the .ai file. Even when I do know which file it is in, how should I collect them together so that there are no broken links on the other side?
I simply don't understand how to manage those links or whats the best way to avoid them. It has gotten to the point where I save each layer in Photoshop separately as .pdf and place them in illustrator manually, but there has to be an easier way. Even when saving in .tiff in photoshop and selecting "place" with the "link" option unchecked in illustrator, it will still place it as a link. On the other hand when placing pdf files in illustrator they import as "Non-native art" which as I read can also cause troubles with colors etc.. Can somebody please help me make sense of it???
I work in Windows 7 64 bit and have Adobe Design & Web Premium CS6.

When an Illustrator AI file is saved with PDF compatibility it contains of 2 forks, the one contains the whole file for editing in Illustrator (which makes it important ot choose the correct comptibility of Illustrator version) and the other contains the pdf part. If you use such an ai file with pdf compatibility to place in InDesign, Photoshop or even in Illustrator these programs use the pdf part.
The pdf part should be complete even if the linked files are missing, so it is possible to open an ai file in Acrobat or Reader. The pdf part is also a rich PDF which contains all coors and transparency.
From Illustrator CS6.1 forward it is possible to extract embedded images. And it is a good tradition in all programs to have all embedded files listed in the link panel.

  • CS2 InDesign problems with Snow Leopard

I recently purchased a new iMac with Snow Leopard. I installed my CS2 and everything seemed okay. Apple said I would have no trouble with CS2 on the new operating system.
InDesign is doing strange things. When I move a text box, the text disappears. I have to click the text cursor over the text and it reappears. Also, starting yesterday, when I export a file to PDF, InDesign crashes.
Other than purchasing CS4, is there a way to fix these problems?
    Thank you.

Sorry my email showing no message. What would be doing that?
I called Apple and they told me to install Rosetta, which I did. It helped for a while—I could move a text box and the text would not disappear but I still could not export to a pdf without InDesign crashing. They gave me a number to call for Adobe. I haven't called yet because I know the answer.
This is really a pain. I am working on a 32 page document with photos and lots of text. I always export to a pdf so I can send it out for proofing. I will have to transfer the files to my old computer to make pdfs.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Importing Word into InDesign, problem with styles

    OS 10.6, CS5
    Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any experience with importing styled Word docs into InDesign?
Editors style their Word documents with some basic styles (Text, References, Headline, etc.) using a Word template that I created. Designers use import options to match the Word styles to the ID styles. This worked fine in Word 2004 and InDesign CS3: Word  "text" style would map on import to the InDesign "text" style, even though they had totally different attributes. Superscripts, italics, etc. would be respected as local overrides in InDesign.
Then we upgraded to CS5. Automatic mapping on import no longer seems to work: After importing text, all the styles in InDesign have local overrides assigned to them that don't make sense (hyphenation exceptions, tab settings). So I'm left with importing the Word styles, using auto-renaming so that InDesign explicitly does NOT match styles.
Then delete the Word styles one by one from the paragraph style panel, replacing with the desired ID style.
This has gone on for several months and we've now upgraded to Office 2011 but that hasn't solved the problem.
With Word 2011 docx files, the import works almost like it did in CS3, the styles almost come in cleanly: If the style in Word has NO local overrides, such as italics or superscripts, the InDesign style is correctly applied. The problem is those local overrides in Word--InDesign not only respects the italic or superscript, it also respects the font attribute. All the Word styles are Times New Roman so all superscripts in InDesign are coming in as superscript + TNR. (see screenshot)
Are we left with our original work-around? Importing styles then manually deleting and replacing them?
This is frustrating because it used to be smooth and seamless and while some new features of CS5 are great, it's annoying that it's broken this fundamental function!
I've tried saving the Word files as doc or rtf instead of docx but this doesn't make a difference in this problem.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I'm an author / publisher.  I write in Word and I publish with InDesign. When I'm in the review stages, I like to edit my text in Word, so I export the text as an RTF.  When I import it back into InDeisgn I often find that some of the styles have annoying overrides from Word that break things.  (1) Paragraph style stuff about hyphenation and (2)  Characters style stuff about  Character direction: Left-to-Right style.
    * Easy global  fix:  select the whole text open the Window | Style | Paragraph window, and click the button on the bottom to remove all overrides. And do the same for the Window | Style | Character window. Before doing this, I like to check that I don’t have any italics that are in the file as overrides rather than being in there as part of a header style or as part of the Emphasis style that I try to use throughout the text instead of just an italic override. It makes me uneasy to remove all overrides, as I always worry there might be an important one I could have kept.
    * (1) Specific fix for the hyphenation overrides: Make sure the hyphenation settings in the individual InDesign paragraph styles match, so far as possible, the Word global hyphenation settings in the Page Layout | Hyphenation dialog of Word.    InDesign will import any Word hyphenation settings that don’t match the InDesign doc styles as overrides.
Specifically,  set InDesign Hyphen Limit to ( say) 1 and set Word | Hyphenation | Hyphenation Options | Limit consecutive hyphens to the same number (say) 1. Also set InDesign Paragraph Style Hyphenation | Hyphenation Zone to (say) 0.5” and set Word | Hyphenation | Hyphenation Options | Hyphenation Zone to the same number (say) 0.5”.  And turn off all the InDesign optional hyphenation check boxes at the bottom of the dialog, and the turn off the two check boxes in the Word Hyphenation Options box as well.In Word you should also set Hyphenation | Automatic.  If you cautiously set Word Hyphenation | None the import will throw a “Hyphenation” override on the hyphenated paragraph styles, even though this maikes no sense.
You may still pick up some hyphenation related overrides on your heder styles, if you have set the headers not to hyphenate.  You can either dump the overrides in InDesign or you can set your header styles to hyphenate…and be careful not have any headers actually be longer than one line.
    (2) I still haven't found the fix for the Left-to-Right text override.

  • Problem with file share from iTunes to iPad - not enough memory

    Hi
I've got iTunes (10.7.0.21) installed - latest version.
On my iPad I have an app - OpenSong. I need to transfer a number of files to this app throug Application - File share (don't know if this is the correct description, I use a Danish version).
I want to add around 750 small files (1-3 kb) to the iPad. The problem is that it only will copy around 30-60 files at a time before iTunes comes with a box indication that the program encountered a problem and cannot copy the file xxxxx. "Not enough availabel memory".
I then have to close iTunes and continue from where I came to. If i don't, that is I try to copy again, iTunes frequently crashes.
iPad 3, 64 GB - plenty of free memory
Win 7, 4 GB RAM, plenty of free disc space. Windows and iTunes fully updated.
Anyone got an idea? Or how do I report this to Apple?

    Hi Damse,
I have the same problem. I also have about the same number of small files to transfer to the iPad. The point at which the transfer through iTunes to the iPad varies within the range you describe. I also have taken to loading in as many files as I can, integrating them into the applicatiom, ejecting the iPad, and stopping and starting iTunes again and repeating the process.
    Best regards,

  • Problems with Screen Share with Back to My Mac

Hi everyone, I'm at a loss right now... I had Screen sharing previously working with my fathers Macbook air (using my apple ID) so i could help him with troubleshooting from time to time.  I just recently did a clean reinstall of Mountain Lion on my iMac.  I am in the process of setting everything up again but it doesn't seem to be working. I have done what the directions call for but it's still not working.  Not sure if it has to do with my clean install and having to redo something on my fathers computer too.  another strange problem is that in the sharing section of my Macs system prefs, under screen sharing I am unable to remove any users from the Allow Access for section.  the button does nothing at all.  can someone do a step by step on how to make that connection to my fathers computer.  and yes Back to my mac is turned on on both computers.  thanks
ps. I just noticed that i have a couple of Unknown users under my
Allow Access for section, and i can't delete them either.

I see that. The problem is that the log in choice only lets me share the screen of my admin account. I want to share the screen of a standard account which is where I do all my work. So I connect to the standard account and then when I go to share the screen I get the "share screen request"
I just tried to log out of the admin account and into the standard remotely and that worked. Strange way to do it but as long as it works I'm fine with it.
Thanks for the response, it did solve my question because  it helped me figure out how to do it.
