Illustrator Line Graph tool out of alignment

When I go to update an existing line graph, the result places the new line far outside of the appropriate boundaries - several inches from where it should be. This is not an issue of the new value being outside the scale range.

What version.platform are you on?
Here are my settings AI CS6 16.04 incase this helps.
Lets see if this flushes out the corruption. Copy your data, draw a new graph, and paste the data. You can tyre object  >> graph >. design to save your design form your original and paste to the new item.

  • When, if ever, was the last time Illustrator's graph tools were upgraded?

With the increasing importance of Infographics, I have been relying more on graph tools, and find Illustrator's to be quite primitive. Can't Adobe upgrade its graph tools to make the creation of graphs as easy as in Microsoft Excel? Some enhanced features would be appreciated greatly also.

    LOL.
If you combine Larry's (Never) answer and CarlosCanto's (1993) answer then you have the concise answer.
Illustrator 5 * was released in 1993 with Graph Creation. That was pretty much the end of the road for those half baked features.
    * The original version 5, theoretically between versions 4 and 6, not CS5 from 2010. It gets even more confusing if you want to talk platform release numbers. ;-)

  • Has Adobe improved the Graphs tool in Illustrator CS6?

Does anyone know whether there have been any improvements to the graphing tool in Illustrator CS6?
I had thought that perhaps Adobe would be adding a graphs function to Indesign, but there has been no word of it with the CS6 release. And nobody has mentioned graphs in their "new features" reviews of either InDesign nor Illustrator.
The graphing function in Illustrator really sucks - it's been the same since Illustrator 88. Have they totally abandoned those of us who have to create graphs again? Or have they improved it but it's just not cool enough for anyone to mention?

I do a lot of reports - sometimes a 100 page report will have 40 or 50 graphs in it. I have to create over a thousand graphs every year. I have tried all the other products I can find and none of them create files that are really usable in a workflow where everything else is done in Adobe Creative Suite. I need to option click on a linked image of a graph in Indesign, open up an Illustrator file, and update the graph with new data from an Excel file. And I need the graph to look good.
Currently, the Illustrator graphing tool does not support live updating of the data very well at all and has severe limitations. Your data cannot have commas or percent signs or dollar signs. You cannot have numbers as categories (years, for example, as a category label all have to be typed in quotes). The graph labels cannot even have commas in them (you have to enter them manually after you plot it.) The entry dialog for the data is really primitive and hard to work with. And every time you update the graph data and replot the bars or lines, the tick marks are scattered all over the page and you lose your commas in the axis labels. Adobe really ought to be ashamed and embarrassed by how poorly this tool works, and I cannot understand how they can create tools like a perspective grid (which is cool, but I haven't needed it yet) and totally ignore such a basic productivity tool as the graphing feature.
I'm all for the cool stuff too . . . but you don't need live paint or live trace to do graphs if you can actually just import the numbers and do it right. But my graphs need to be accurate and based on plotted numbers, not hand-drawn. And so I have to come up with complicated workarounds and every time I update a graph I have to do all this stuff over again that should just be a one-click update.
If anyone out there is looking for a good business opportunity, build a graphing plugin for Indesign or Illustrator - I'll be happy to test it!

  • Multiple symbols for line graph in illustrator

I can't figure out how to change the default square data points in a line graph.  When I try to got to Object>Graph>Marker it is greyed out.  When I click on a circle symbol and then try to go to Object>Graph>Design, it is greyed out.  I am so frustrated trying to do the simplest things in this program.  The online tutorials on how to make graphs do not seem to explain the simplest of tasks, only the difficult.  Thanks for any help!

    Skeptic,
Yes, it's cumbesome, but it's described in Online Help (at least in CS3 and prior):
Draw whatever you want to use for the marker. (It can be a Symbol; doesn't matter.)
Draw a rectangle and send it behind the marker artwork. For a marker on a line chart, the size of the rectangle relative to the marker art defines the scale. So the rectangle can be smaller than the artwork to make the artwork larger, as shown above. The rectangle can be unstroked, unfilled so it doesn't show.
Select both the artwork and the rectangle. Group. Leave it selected.
Object>Graph>Design. In the dialog, click New Design. Click OK.
Black pointer: Select the graph. Object>Graph>Marker. In the dialog, select the Design you just created. Or...
White pointer: AltClick a single marker in the Graph. AltClick it again to "select up" (Illustrator's upside-down selection scheme) to the parent group. AltClick again to include the legend marker. Object>Graph>Marker. In the dialog, select the Design. This way, you can assign different markers to the various lines in the line graph if you want.

  • Bug with Illustrator Line Tool

    Hi
I am trying to draw a shape using the illustrator line tool, and it always seems to revert to 1pt when I am using it within a shape, even when I manually change it to 0.5pt in the top bar, it does not change. I will go larger than 1pt but not smaller for some reason. It works when the line is by itself. As in not attached to a shape but as soon as you move it to connect with the rest of the shape it reverts to that large size. please help
    Thanks
    Rebecca

Oh thanks! I didn't realise this could effect specific tools as well as the placement of objects, Im having another problem which I thought would be solved by turning off the 'Align to Pixel Grid' but it didn't work

  • Why can't Illustrator's line segment tool make a stroke of .5 pt?

Why can't Illustrator's line segment tool make a stroke of .5 pt? When I create a line at either 90° or 180° I cannot make the stroke thinner than 1 pt., even if I create the line first and then try to change its stroke. When I create a line at any other angle I can make the line thickness whatever I want by changing its stroke thickness. What I want is to make line segments that are .25 or .5 pts, but the minimum Illustrator will do is 1 pt even if I select the line or rectangle and try to change it to .5 or .25 pt. This same problem exists with the rectangle tool when I create a rectangle oriented at either at 90° or 180°, but if I rotate that same rectangle to anything other than 90° or 180° I will then have the ability to change the thickness to less than 1 pt. Any ideas what's going on?

Well, this is good information, but it does not quite get me there. I get as far as {user}:Library:Application Support:Adobe:
but there is no Adobe Illustrator folder. Suggestions?
I want to suggest they add Hyphenation to that list. I never hyphenate anything, and I can't count the number of times I have had to uncheck the hyph box in InDesign and Illustrator. Can you point me to the appropriate suggestion box? Thx D

  • Tutorials for Illustrator Graphing Tool

Can anyone recommend any clear, good video tutorials for using the AI graphing tool? I have looked at quite a few online, and none are really making it clear enough for me.
I admit to not knowing how to do graphs in Excel either, as I imagine this might make the process easier. I'm still on CS2. My version of Office is old as well, which might be why importing info from Excel just produces a lot of gobbledegook in the AI graph cells.
I'm doing a project where I have to do quite a few of them (an annual report), and I'm at my wit's end trying to do them. I know they're probably not as difficult as it seems - can anyone point me in the right direction?

Here is the tutorial which is not a video so you have to read fortunately Mordy wrote this and he is one of the best at writing concise and user friendly instructions. And why he now makes more money then Adobe has ever hope to make from Illustrator!
Rrrriiighhtt. I wish. Then again, if I had that kind of money, I prolly would have invested it all with Bernie Madoff....
Seriously, my Illustrator CS4 Beyond the Basics video training at Lynda.com is going live on April 3, and it has an entire chapter on graphing. Since graphs haven't changed since like Illustrator 8, you'll still benefit from it.
I know it sounds crazy to even mention this, but Adobe's help files on the graph functions aren't that bad -- you might take a look at those and see if they'll help. Also, if you have CS2, you'll want to make sure you have the 12.01 update installed (it's a free download from Adobe), as there was a nasty bug that turned numbers that you paste from Excel into Illustrator turn into garbage characters. Sounds like you might need that patch (choose Help > Updates from Illustrator).
    Hopefully, this helps somewhat.
I feel bad because several years ago, I recorded an eSeminar with Adobe called "Making Number Look Good" but after searching Adobe's website, I was not able to find a link to that recording. They must have taken it down...

Note that each Branch_Desc has 12 periods called CURRPERIOD,CURPERSUB1,CURPERSUB2 ...... and 12 values for those periods as VALUECURRENTPERIOD, VALUECURRENTPERIODSUB1, VALUECURRENTPERIODSUB2......
I need to create a Line Graph for each Branch for the 12 periods as defined above where VALUECURRENTPERIOD, VALUECURRENTPERIODSUB1 etc. are the values for that period. The current BIPublisher Chart tool only allows one Value and One Label. In my case I have 12 VALUES (VALUECURRENTPERIOD etc.) and 12 LABELS (CURRPERIOD, CURPERSUB1 etc.). The SERIES or LEGEND should be the Branch Desc . So what I am looking for is to plot values(12 values) for 6 branches (so six lines) over a period of time (12 periods).

    Hi Tim,
We have this XML data calculated from several tables where the layout was in the format of One account(a Branch in this case) and 12 periodic values for the same . So reformatting the XML is not going to be easy as the source data is like this itself. I tried un-pivioting the table (as this one is already pivoted) but it looks like Oracle doesn't support this feature yet, but is suported in DB2 or SQL. Please take a look at this link

  • Interactive Bar/pie chart and line graph, data from excel/text file -urgent

    Hi,
I have a huge data in excell sheet which keeps updating every month. Data basically consists of service provider and there respective subscribers from various regions of the country over the years. The requirement is to give the viewers an interactive page where in they can make various combinations and can compare, cross examine data according to thier choice.
We want the pie chart / bar graph or line graph to be created on the fly according to the combination made by the user.
The site is hosted on a red hat linux server. how can a connection to the excel spreadsheet be made or is it possible to read from the text file if the entire data is exported to a text file.
Is there any ready made tool/code available which can be customised according to the need.
    Thanx in advance
    Regards
    Prakash

I certainly wouldn't pay for the graphing package at the previous link. check out http://www.object-refinery.com/jfreechart/ for a free, open-source, much better looking graphing package.

  • How to plot this into a line graph?

    Hi,
I just found out that my breakeven point in sales turnover is $132,837. But how would I plot that into Illustrator's line graph?
    breakeven1.jpg: It's breakeven point is $7,956.
breakeven2.jpg: I'm probably doing it wrong. Do I really need to define both axises like that?
    Thanks!

A more interesting question is: Must you use a chart at all to present such a simple fact? No offense, they tear such stuff to pieces over at Junk Charts and Mr. Tufte would call it a Duck. If you insist on using a chart, a differential bar chart or a range chart would be much more appropriate and telling.

  • HP LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw Printing Out of Alignment

Images and color text print out of alignment.
The issue started the first day we had the print.  It has taken me a while to get into diagnosing it but I have tried the following:
I have tried replacing the toner cartridges with new ones (expensive).  The problem occured even with the original starter cartridges.
I have tried a full printer reset.
I have tried leaving the printer unplugged from power for 24 hours.
I have tried several alignment features within the printer menu.
Printing black alone is fine.  All other colors do not line up with each other or with the black.  Creates a 3D-ish kind of effect.
The printers quality report shows all colors areprinting fine but not aligned to one another.
I have included scans of a part of a rainbow print that illustrates the misalignment as well as the quality report page.
    This question was solved.

Thanks for letting me know James_LAG.
At this point it does look like a hardware issue with the printer. Please call our technical support and inquire about a replacement printer, at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. Contact HP.

  • How do I change the line color in a line graph?

I used Illustrator to create a line graph. (Not my desired option as I normally import them from R and then edit, but the textbook wanted to show that you can create graphs and edit them in Illustrator)
Anyway, I did all of the editing except that I can't change the color of the line. My assignment requires me to match the textbook example and the textbook does not provide instructions on how to do it. I've done just about any method I can think of and the line still stays light gray. I'm almost willing to just give up and lose the points but something as simple as color can't be this hard, right? Right?

Whenever I try to shift+direct select it thinks I want to move the line, so as I shift + direct select and drag my mouse across the line (to highlight it all) it moves a chunk of the line and turns it into a near perpendicular line.
I found the appearance window, it just says "Path" (the color I want it to be that it's not)
    "Stroke" 4pt
"Fill" (the color I want it to be that it's not)
    "Opacity": Default
And some other buttons. I think I'll try the help line tomorrow, I know I saw a customer service number somewhere and I'm only here because the chat was unavailable. This is only one of my 3 problems with my assignment so I'll search here for answers to the other two. Learning new things is rarely fun.

    Hi Meera,
you can use FM "GRAPH_MATRIX_3D' to print graphs. See if this works out good for your.
Simple code to use this would be as follows.
DATA: BEGIN OF itab_data OCCURS 0,
    dataname(15),
    quantity1 TYPE i,
    quantity2 TYPE i,
    quantity3 TYPE i,
    END OF itab_data,
    BEGIN OF itab_options OCCURS 0,
    option(20),
    END OF itab_options.
    itab_data-dataname = 'Electricity'.
    itab_data-quantity1 = 55.
    itab_data-quantity2 = 62.
    itab_data-quantity3 = 59.
    APPEND itab_data.
    itab_data-dataname = 'Gas'.
    itab_data-quantity1 = 35.
    itab_data-quantity2 = 52.
    itab_data-quantity3 = 44.
    APPEND itab_data.
    itab_data-dataname = 'Water'.
    itab_data-quantity1 = 18.
    itab_data-quantity2 = 22.
    itab_data-quantity3 = 19.
    APPEND itab_data.
    CALL FUNCTION 'GRAPH_MATRIX_3D'
    EXPORTING
    col1 = 'Jan'
    col2 = 'Feb'
    col3 = 'Mar'
titl = 'Gráfico Teste - Carlos'
    TABLES
    data = itab_data
    opts = itab_options
    EXCEPTIONS
    OTHERS = 1.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Graphing a RUNNING TOTAL on a line graph

So I'm having a lot of trouble putting my data on a chart. I have it all laid out here: files.me.com/redsteven1/glwk4v.numbers.zip
Whenever I try to graph it though I run into a whole host of problems. Namely, that I can't get the values to plot on the chart at all.
Not sure what the problem is... I select A2:G103... and I see the different series (for each Activity) show up in the legend, but nothing is plotted on the chart.
I know that much of the table is blank... that's because I'll be adding to it every day.
Ideally, the X-axis should be time/date.... May, June, July, and August can be the major tick marks. And the Y-axis would be number of hours spent on each activity.
To further complicate things, the chart should really be a running total of time spent on each activity... so if I spend an hour on Activity 1 each day for 3 days... then on the third day I should have a plot of 3 hours... not 1.
I know I didn't work things super well here... hopefully you can figure out what I mean by looking at the linked file : \
    Thanks in advance.

I guess that line graph isn't the best one, I would use the Scatter one.
You can't chart your datas as they are at this time.
Every datas are date_time or duration values which can't be charted as is.
Here, I converted the dates from column A into strings
Then I added 6 columns in which I converted the durations into decimal hours.
    The original columns are hidden.
The formula used to convert is a simple one.
    In H2, I inserted :
    =STRIPDURATION(B)*24
    Fill to the right
    Fill Down
    to fill the other cells.
