Illustrator missing links when working on network drives

Hi everyone,
I've been experiencing this problem since several versions ago. Is only that now has become more apparent since our team have started to work collaboratively in the same files. Let me explain the problem.
If I have an Illustrator file on my local drive with several images linked everything works fine. Now if I move that file (and its linked images) to a network drive which is shared by the entire team and I open the file every thing is in place as long as I'm the last person that saved the file. If a teammate open the file I've just saved in he or she computer a prompt for missing links is shown. Once the missing images are re-linked he or she can work normally and if they close the file it won't prompt a missing links message the next time he or she open the file. But if another teammate open the file from his or her computer the message shows again.
It is as if Illustrator save the paths relatively to each computer rather than to the network drive where the links sit. This behavior is really annoying since it make collaborative work a pain.
Do anyone know a fix or at least a workaround for this? (embedding images instead of linking them is not a solution since we work with large files on huge projects).
Thanks in advance!

Well is not real time collaboration. It is more like you say, separate people sometimes end up working on the same files. This workflow is great and works flawlessly. The real problem are the linked assets (either images or others AI files placed inside a document). Each time a team member opens a file he or she need to re-link everything and it keeps correctly linked as long as he/she that saves changes to the file. The next person who open that file will need to re-link assets again.
It is as is Illustrator were unable to remember the path of links in shared drives but only in local ones.
It is not a deal breaker but certainly is quite annoying.

  • Illustrator CC crashes when saving to network drive

    Hi all,
We have 3 Macs all running 10.10 or 10.9 which crash when saving eps file types (PDF saves fine) to a NetApp network drive using Illustrator CC 2014.1.0 release.
Users can save files locally and then copy the files to the network drive with no problems.
    Anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Colin

    Colin,
It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky, at least for a while, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • TM works with network drives?

Just to be sure - TM works with directly attached drives. But does it also work with network drives? I hope it does at least with Apples newest update.
    Thanks

There is plenty of documentation/discussion of a workaround that let's you make your computer recognize unsupported drives. Search for it using words like terminal network unsupported drive backup and you will find it. Some people say it works fine, and others caution against using it. I haven't seen a thorough discussion that really explains why Apple doesn't allow it, or why it's risky, or why it works, but that's typical of the boards that attract a techie crowd. Me? After spending $650 for a Terastation, I'm going to give it a try. Apple wants so badly for Windows users to switch to Mac, but they sometimes seem to make it very difficult and frustrating for us.

  • Missing files when copying over network

I've had a good search for people with similar problems on Discussions, and there are a few mentions of similar occurences. Here's my summary though.
I have 2 Macs, and frequently transfer files from one to the other by sharing drives and using the Finder.
However, quite often, when transferring lots of files, they are sucessfully copied but do not show in Finder on the receiving machine. The files are there (using Terminal to explore the directory reveals the files in question), but Finder just doesn't acknowledge any existence of the "missing" files.
This problem can usually be cured by creating a new folder in one of the affected folders - this somehow kicks Finder into refreshing the folder's contents.
Removing the .DS_Store file(s) (again, via Terminal) in the copied folder also resolves this issue, leading me to believe that the problem lies with the .DS_Store files.
I cannot believe I am not the only user who frequently finds themselves having to do uneccesary Terminal work to reveal files which appear to be missing after copy over the network.
Is Apple aware of this problem? Does anyone else have any workarounds?

I don't think I have experienced that exact problem however, I am such a Unix geek, I typically do my in-network transfers between Mac machines using SCP at the shell prompt in Terminal.
Finder refresh on the other hand I have experienced before although I cannot provide a situation or example.
Usually if it needs a refresh, I believe all I ever do is navigate away from the folder, then back to it. Or if it is the Desktop in question, using Exposé to show it, a single click on an empty space there will make the newly copied items appear.

  • Check In/Out doesn't work on network drive?

My company has used DW's check in/check out functionalities just fine for years, but before now the local copies of a site's files had been stored on each user's Mac's harddrive. I've been working on relocating those local copies to a single network drive that everyone can access so we're all working from the same local copies; most everything's going great except it looks like the check in/out functions are no longer working. It looks like the only indication I can see now in the FTP view is a green check on the remote files pane when something's checked out– the local copies don't show lock or check icons any longer.
Given that the only change has been moving the local files over to the network drive, I have to assume DW's check in/out (or at least however I have settings set now) doesn't play nice when the local files live on a network drive. Has anyone run into this issue, and is there a fix for it?
    Thanks,
    J

    @Zabeth69:
Yep, a new site definition's been set up and I've double-checked that the "local files" setting is pointing to the shared network server as the new local folder.
    @Nadia-P:
At first I didn't think that link had anything that I didn't already know, and then saw these two bullets:
    •  The local root folder for this defined site must be on the local hard drive of a workstation.
    •  Your local root folder should not be shared or on a mounted drive.
So in short, I suppose those answer my question, but they don't actually say *why* that is– it's hard to believe that the checking feature is limited to a literal local drive, and not a network drive. Seems odd. I'm going to poke around some more and try and figure out why that is, but I'd be grateful if anyone happens to know why in the meantime...

  • ITunes will not work on network drive Error (-54)

    Greetings.
I recently got the new 27" iMac, and am converting my old Mac Pro 2009 to a "server."
On my Mac Pro, I had my iTunes folder on a separate drive, which was formatted exFAT. This was done specifically because I work cross-platform. So "Drive A" was my OSX Boot drive, "Drive B" was my Windows 7 Bootcamp drive, "Drive C" was my exFAT shard data drive and "Drive D" was Time Machine. The goal was, and is, to be able to use iTunes cross-platform without having to manage separate libraries.
Now, I would like to connect my iMac's iTunes (Mac side) to "Drive C," but I keep getting an error message: The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-54). At first I thought it was due to the fact that the Mac Pro kept going to sleep, so I changed the setting. That didn't work. I then checked permissions - and the permissions give my iMac read-write permission, so that *shouldn't* be the issue. I can write to the network drive just fine.
The issue can't be connectivity, because I am using ethernet, not wifi to connect the drives.
I cannot use target disk mode, because "Drive C" is not a boot drive.
So I need to know why iTunes cannot now write the Library file when permissions should be fine, it never had a problem with exFAT formatting in the last year I had that configuration and what can I do now to get iTunes to work over a network.
Both versions of iTunes are current.
The only remaining variable I can possibly think of is that the Mac Pro is using the latest version of Lion and not MacOSX Server.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to get versioning to work on network drive?

I'm having a setup with two computers. An iMac and a Mac mini, both running Lion.
I have so far been happy with the versioning in iWork and appreciate not having to save the file before exiting Pages.
Well, that was when the document was stored on my iMac.
Now that I want to access the disk on my Mac mini from my iMac Pages will no longer play ball.
When I edit a document in Pages on my iMac and that document is stored on the shared drive of the Mac mini Pages no longer support versioning.
I can still exit Pages without having to save the document, but I no longer have access to earlier versions.
Is this the way it was designed?
I'm sharing the Mac mini disk by sharing a folder with AFP and SMB.
I don't edit any of the documents on the Mac mini, all editing is done on the iMac.
Actually, Pages is not even installed on the Mac mini.
Is there anything I can do in my setup to make Versioning work on my network drive?

Versions is really a function of Lion so I suggest posting the question in the Lion forum. You're much more likely to find someone with an answer there.

  • Aperture 3 sees external drive differently when used as network drive

I have an Aperture library with 32000 files. When I started running out of disk space on my Macbook Pro I switch from Managed to Reference. I connected my external drive and Aperture moved the images. When I disconnect the drive, connect it to my iMac, and access the drive via my iMac, Aperture shows all my images as offline. I verified in terminal that the path hasn't changed (/Volumes/MyBook750/).
Is there a way to get Aperture to see the drive without having to use the Locate Referenced Files option every time I switch from external to network share?

The short answer is no there is not. I have a work-around but it is not for the feint of heart (dedicated 10GigE iSCSI network and some direct DB writes) but there is no easy way to deal with it.
If my memory serves this used to work a bit differently in Ap2 where a couple different criteria were used. Now it seems to be directly based on volume UUID even thought the path name is still stored in the DB. Maybe it's just me?

  • Working with network drives

I am having this trouble access files on a network drive. If I specify "G:\Folder\Filename" I get a file not found. If I specfy "\\server\Folder\Filename" it works fine. I'd prefer to use the first method as it would involve me not having to update all files to work this way, any suggestions?

Yeah, I guess that would help. It's OAS 10gR1. This is a forms application. displaying images stored on a network drive.
Running on Windows 2003. When I try to open an image on a shared drive, it gives me "cannot be found" works in client server version (we use both forms 5, and then forms 10g for web components). When we try to open with App server using UNC \\server\folder\image it works fine.

  • I need to load a link to work's H drive but it keeps tellimg me it's not trusted. How do I tell M/F it is trusted?

I need to work from home. Work has sent me a link to access their H drive (server). When I click on link or c&p it comes up with not trusted & get me out of here.
I click I trust this site & it tells me to get Firefox to trust it but not how to do that. How do I put link into yr trusted sites?

As you can see from the error message, it is a self-signed certificate that has expired last year:
*The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.
*The certificate expired on 12/24/2009 01:57 PM.
You should see a link at the bottom of that error page with a label "Add Exception"
    * Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
    * Click the "View..." button to inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer.
Only leave the mark in the box at the bottom to "Permanently store this exception" if you trust that certificate.
    * Click "Confirm Security Exception" to enter the site if you still want to go to that website.
Make sure that you are not in (permanent) [[Private Browsing]] mode if you can't add a permanent exception.

  • .chm files don't work on network drives...

I noticed this problem with .chm files compiled with my
projects. Then I tried it with the Robohtml.chm file as well. If
these files are on my local drive they work perfectly. When they
are moved to a network drive I get the following error.
Navigation to the webpage was canceled
    What you can try:
    Retype the address.
I have full access permissions to the files and folders on
    the network.
Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

Ohh yes - I got into the same mess - I'd personally recommend
using the RoboHTML version - you you'll have to do some copy/paste
+ retyping, but at least you've be ably to 'share the file.
Another great thing is to use 'conditional build tags' for
your project (thanks Peter G.) Now you can a "Master Version" which
you make changes to, and say using the Single Source Layout you
have, for example: A version for Management, one for Staff - (i'm
not sure how many you're allowed - with regard to the tags).
Now - here's the really useful bit - if you make a change to
the Master version your changes are naturally reflected to all the
other versions - and any restrictions for the other versions are
not shown as "page unavailable" but just don't appear on the
    "menu"....
Give it a try - it's made my life a lot easier (mines a 700+
page company procedure manual for a Casino).

  • LR5.2 Destroys raw-files if working with network drives

I have a serious bug with LR5.2: It destroys my raw files CR2 (Canon ESO 60d) if I work with my local network drive. All my pictures are stored on this network drive. If I try to import from sd card or local drive new pictures and copy/move them via import or synchornize to my network drive the files are corrupted. I also can't open them with other sw-programms like DPP from Canon. The original files on the sd card are okay. Even if I copy the files via explorer to the network drive I can open them with for ex. DPP, but after I imported them into LR5.2 the files are corrupted and I can't open them with DPP again.

    LeeScoresby wrote:

Lr doesn't write CR2 files, except if moving/copying, and then only via call to operating system. If your raw files are going bad, you probably have a system/hardware problem.

  • "Save" not working on network drives in Lion?

Hey everyone. Ran into an odd issue yesterday.
We have a user at one of our graphics locations that recently upgraded to a new iMac with 10.7 since her old machine died. They have multiple network drives that they use. These are windows 2003 R2 servers.
On 10.6 if they had a PDF open in Acrobat or a Quark job open (one that they opened from the server)... they could just do a command + s and save the file to the same location. Now, when they do a command + s it brings up the save as window and they have to navigate back to the folder where the original file was stored. In some instances, there are so many jobs and multiple versions of the job for a customer, that can take a long time to navigate back.
Is there a quick setting to turn this off or is this something new that was implemented in 10.7 that they need to deal with?

I'm afraid you hit it on the head.  This is indeed one of the "new features" in the Lion version of OS X.  I do not personally know of a workaround for this.
    Hope this helps

  • Does Time Machine work with Networked drives yet...?

Yes, I did search, and nothing recent came up.
I have a 500 GB lacie hard drive that is attached to my router, and it works great.
Without using any of those hacks, should Time Machine work properly with a networked drive?

No. At present on drives attached to a Time Capsule seem to work.
My AEBS has a 500GB USB drive attached - and Time Machine won't use it.
My Time Capsule has both the internal 1TB disk and a 1TB external Western Digital drive attached - and the Time Capsule drive and all of the partitions on the USB drive are available for use by Time Machine.
Time Capsule comes with a new version of the Airport Utility (5.3) - I don't see that this is available as a separate download right now.
Perhaps Airports will support Time Machine in the future - but that is by no means guaranteed. I don't think many people know what the hardware differences between an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule really are.
