Illustrator "not responding" instead of a progress bar?

How come there is no progress bar when I open an Illustrator file?
When I open a file (while loading) Illustrator just show "Not Responding" in the top of the program.
In a windows environment this is quite annoying as it normally means the program hangs and need to be restarted.
This is not the case. As soon as Illustrator has processed the file it opens fine.
Instead a progress bar would be expected / prefered !
Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
Adobe Illustrator CC 17.1.0 (64 bit)

Hi Jacob and thank you for contributing.
Sorry but I don't think we can blame Windows for this one.
I got plenty of resources and have tested with Illustrator as only application running - as well as having other software to load simultaneously large files without any problem.
My guess is that Illustrator don't interchange with windows on the given filesize and the time it takes to load in Illustrator?

  • Illustrator "Not Responding" on load and save

    Good evening..
We bought a new computer our graphic designer (HP Z400 quad-xeon 2.66GHz, 16GB ram, Quadro 4000 graphic card), installed with Windows 7 64-bit, set it up with the Adobe CS 5.5 Master Collection.
The problem is with Illustrator, whereas it goes to "Not Responding" on load and save of files. The progress bar when saving stops at 5-10%, but it seems like it's still doing it's thing and it eventually goes through (15-45secs). However, I really hate getting this kind of message, moreso because his current desktop (HP XW4600, Win XP 32-bit, 3BG of RAM, Adobe CS5) is not doing this at all.
I looked a lot of the forums, and tested what was offered and it still isn't better.
    - I removed an Add-On I had installed, no luck.
    - Removed all network drives, no luck.
    - Unchecked "Create PDF compatible file", no luck.
Working locally is the same as on the network, which makes me believe the network is not a problem in my case. (Even switched from 100mb network connection to 1GB, which was the first thing I tried)
Mind you, all these things I've tried were done in addition to the others, so even to total of all these wasn't helpful, and I'm still at square one.
I'd like to add that all the other applications in the suite are behaving correctly, Photoshop, Premiere, InDesign... Everything else is working great and not freezing at all. Which is why I find this wierd that Illustrator would act like that while all the others are fine.
Anything else I should be trying?
    Jonathan
Edit: I checked again on his previous computer, and it seems the issue is there as well, unlike what I mentionned before, which might point to a problem with Illustrator itself, since between CS5 and CS5.5, Illustrator hasn't changed. Altough I'm not sure if it may be that the old computer is just *that* slow...

Well, it has the Adobe PDF printer (from Adobe Acrobat) and MS XPS Document Writer (from Office), but since they weren't real printer I hadn't mentionned them. Is this what you consider Virtual printer?
Either way, I've added a printer but it's still doing the same thing.

  • ITunes Store - Will not go beyond the dashed progress bar, will also freeze any outside Internet activity

Alright, I've read numerous discussions and have tried to find an answer and have come up with zilch. Here's what's happening:
I open iTunes, and it attempts to connect to the iTunes store (presumably to update the Cloud). When it does this, it remains on the dashed progress bar. While attempting to connect, it will also freeze any other Internet applications, specifically any pages open in my browser (Chrome). I'm not sure why this is, I haven't seen anything on that subject. However, if I click the (x) next to the progress bar to tell it to stop, it will do so and I can listen with ease. Now, I'd actually like to use the iTunes Store, but whenever I do, it never gets anywhere. I get the dashed progress bar, which on occassion will move on to the solid progress bar, but it will completely freeze from there. I have tried doing the winsock reset, looking for conflicting programs with LSP, reinstalling, updating, none work. After running the network connectivity diagnostics, iTunes determines that everything is good except that a secure link to the iTues store failed. This led me to believe that there was a firewall of sorts that was blocking it. After adding iTunes to the list of exceptions to Windows Firewall, the same results were thrown back at me. I do not have any other programs that would block it (that I know of).
Please help? I just want to buy an album all legal-like.

    Hi there,
So it's sounds like you've already tried a majority of the main troubleshooting steps, but I would still recommend taking a look at some of the published troubleshooting found in the articles below.

  • Illustrator not responding when using pattern swatches

I made one pattern swatch and when I start using it and than try to save, my illustrator stops responding and just gives me the spinning wheel. I tried to make the pattern smaller, open a new document to paste it in there and save.....nothing works. I can not save any new designs with the pattern swatch. Help please.

I tried that too...still not responding. I ended up just making clipping masks....works too, but the swatches were easier to use.

  • Illustrator "not responding" with networked account

    Hello
    1st time here...
We are running a small network of 33 iMacs (current Thunderbolt edition) on MacOS 10.6.8, attached to a MacPro Server running MacOS X Server 10.6.8.
We have about 130 users (school environment).
As maybe a speciality, the user home folders are on the Server in the Directory called "Home" (which is not on the server boot volume)
We bought a Volume Licence of CS Master collection vesrion 5.5.
We tweaked Adobe Acrobat to not crash following the redirect advices given elsewhere....
But we have no luck getting Illustrator to do what it should on these networked accounts...
What it does: click the Icon in the Dock (or double click the Application Icon in Finder):
it bounces a few seconds in the Dock and comes to rest. No splash screen or any kind of message.
If we look in Activity Monitor, Illustrator is in status of "not responding".
If I check the Log Illustrator writes in it's log, it stops after verifying the serial number.
I already contacted the local (Swiss) Adobe support by telephone, they told me:
if Illustrator runs with a local administrator account, we cannot help you
I contacted Adobe Live chat this morning. They told me to contact the phone number that gave me the above answer...
Any hints? I seem to be running in circles...
(sorry for english terms, it is not my native language, and i'm trying to translate from a german speaking Mac system)
    Andreas

well, I did not change the operating system, I changed computers (server and clients) which came with a new operating system :-). The new computers probably would not run with the old operating system (10.4.11) and is not really good punblicity as a school to run old versions of applications ;-)
    I got it running today...
For the records: Our support suggested to redirect
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/
    ~/Library/Caches/AdobeHelpData/
    to the local disk.
    I did not find
    ~/Library/Caches/AdobeHelpData/
in the folders of a local user who had already started Illustrator once, so in the end I redirected the whole
    ~/Library/Caches/
to the local disk. This might be too much for the problem I had to solve, but seems to do the trick and doesn't seem to have bad sideeffects...

  • Illustrator CS3 Suddenly Stopped saving (Illustrator not responding)

    Hi All-
I'm using Illy CS3 on Windows Vista. Everything was working fine, for 4 months, 'til Monday morning, when Illy stopped saving my files (not responding). At first I thought it was a corrupt file. After much time and effort I discovered it was all files. Then I found these forums and after 2 days of trouble shooting, I at least know my way around a PC better! On one of the forums someone suggested trying a different user name, Illy will work when I do this, but not under my user name.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    So far I have:
trashed my pref. folder (more than a few times)
uninstalled/reinstalled Adobe creative Suite 3 (one time)
Checked/started/restarted the print spool (a couple of times)
and have renamed Version Cue to Old Version Cue (twice-before and after installation)
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    Hi Lisa,
I am also having the same problem with Illy, where it takes forever to save, says 'Not Responding' then eventually saves, or does not save at all. At first I thought it to be my computer at work so I took my work home and found that it did the same thing on my home computer. I did all the trouble shooting you did as well. I'm wondering if it is because of how many layers I have that could bog it down? It is quite frustrating. It has come to the point where I can not add any more to my work because Illy won't save.
I am relieved that I have found something on the problem that I have been having.
    Thanks,
    Cherie

  • Illustrator not responding.. 'force quit' is futile too !

    Hi!
My illustrator stopped working in the middle of my trying to save an illustrator file. I am awfully stuck as my mac is not shutting or restarting too.. says 'please quit illustrator to shut down/ restart'. I have no idea and although have been researching on google to find a solution I have really not moved anywhere. Was in the middle of designing a pattern for my portfolio page. Appreciate all help to get out of this insanity.
    System details:
    MacBook Air
Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB

  • Illustrator not responding even after preferences cleared and app reinstalled.

I have a Toshiba Q875 running Windows 8. I subsribe to Creative Cloud. I have a huge proble, with Illustrator CS6.
I have seen posts about this problem on the forums, but I need to post this anyway because I am at wits end. After I start Illustrator, I cannot open a document or create a new document without the program giving me a not repsonding error. I have had two lengthy calls with Adobe Technical Support. In addition to uninstalling and reinstalling the software four times, we have cleared the preferences and created a second user. After the first call, tech had Illustrator running by killing the prefs. A couple of days later, the problem resurfaced. Today the tech walked me through everthing, including a thorough examination of the uninstall before I performed the reinstall. He assured me everything would work. It does not.
I am hoping somebody has insight to this problem. I more so hope that somebody from Adobe sees my post. I cannot believe that I cannot speak to somebody in the US to help remedy this problem. The offshore techs have been nice, but somebody at coporate needs to know about this problem that, as my research has indicated , is not a rare problem on Macs or PCs.

    ikemyer,
Did you run the Cleaner Tool between uninstalling and reinstalling?

  • Illustrator not responding

I have a i7 notebook with nvidia geforce 740M, 8gb de ram. On the last days, with some files, every time I do an action, like deleting somethin, saving a file or moving, the illustrator CC stops for a few seconds and doesn't respond at all. Does anyone know what is going on?

    julianorsf,
If it only happens with certain files, I believe they may have become corrupt (are you opening from/saving to own harddisk, see below).
If so, one thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
You may also try to open the document with Adobe Acrobat, if it was saved with PDF Compatible file ticked, then save it as PDF and try to open that.
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/
    http://www.illustrator.fixtoolbox.com/
As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.
Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself:
    http://daxxter.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/how-to-recover-a-corrupted-illustrator-ai-file/
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-illustrator-files.html
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50032.html
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50031.html
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/enable-content-recovery-mode-illustrator.html
It is always recommended here to open/save your documents from/to your own harddisk, then copy to external media/servers/whatever as backup.
You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk.

  • Illustrator "not responding" on startup

    OS: Mac OSX 10.7.5
    CS4
I've been using this properly licensed copy of the CS4 suite for about 3 years now and I've never encountered any major issues until a couple of days ago. While everything else in the suite still functions properly, Illustrator keeps freezing on startup in the "initializing" phase and I have to force quit to get out of things. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Illustrator and retooled my fonts through fontbook to nothing but my system fonts and its still happening. I'll be first to admit that my understanding of font management is pretty poor and perhaps, though the fonts have been uninstalled, they could still be causing trouble? Any help would be great.

Well, it has the Adobe PDF printer (from Adobe Acrobat) and MS XPS Document Writer (from Office), but since they weren't real printer I hadn't mentionned them. Is this what you consider Virtual printer?
Either way, I've added a printer but it's still doing the same thing.

  • Illustrator CS6 "not responding"

Illustrator CS6 (MAC OSx) constantly freezes for no particular reason, and states "not responding", leaving the only option to "force quit" and restart. I have tried resetting the preferences and various other options, with no success. Is there a way to fix this?

I am using a Mac Mini, with MAC OSx, and a Phillips screen. There does not seem to be a pattern that I can decipher that helps me figure out why Illustrator CS6 does this.
Here are a list of some of the times it does this, and a few things I have tried.
When opening Illustrator, I then create a new document. If I choose the default setting  (Print / A4 etc) then it opens a new document without a problem. If I however change the settings to web, it freezes. If once I have a blank print cmyk document open, I then try to open a previously saved illustrator file (.ai) of any variety - big or small, old or new, print or web etc, it freezes. When I say it freezes I mean that it won't do anything, and on clicking on the icon, it says Illustrator not responding. This does not change over time. I have waited hours to see if anything changes. It does not. I have to "force quit"  and restart it.
Other times, I have tried to directly open a previous illustrator file / document from finder, with illustrator closed, and it does the same "not responding" after it opens illustrator
I have tried opening illustrator, and then opening a previous document from the file > open command. It also freezes at this point.
But then there are times when illustrator opens, and opens files (big or small, print or web, old or new) without a problem, and I haven't seemingly done anything different.
Other times that is freezes are when moving the swatches panel from one side of the screen to the other, with a document open (any type of .ai)
I usually work in .ai files, but have had the same problem with .eps and png's etc too.
It has also frozen when embedding a png image into a .ai doc.
In general my documents are not large, they average anywhere between 200kb to 2.5 MB usually.
I have tried switching off my computer and rebooting it, still no luck
I have tried closing all programs, and only opened Illustrator, still no luck
I have done software updates with no change.
I have tried resetting preferences by holding down the shift, cntrl, apple, alt keys on opening. This has helped once or twice, but I have had no luck with it for the past few months.
Does any of this information help?
My next option is to delete and reinstall illustrator, but I am a bit nervous to do that in case I have other complications with installing it for a second time.
Happy to answer other questions, just not sure what other info would be helpful.
Any advise would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Illustrator cs6 not responding at startup

Hi, when I run Illustrator, starts with the logo and loadings (until here all ok) and when the program starts (after finishing all the loadings of plugins, fonts etc) I get only white background, no interface, nothing, just white space (in both 32 and 64bit), see here http://tinypic.com/r/35lhjd5/6 and at the top (in the title) says: Illustrator not responding.. any ideas?
I have an Acer laptop Win 7 Home 64bit and am using Adobe Application Manager.
I have remove all adobe programs and folders before the installation and also I used the AdobeCreativeSuiteCleanerTool.exe.
I have try some steps from the forums like:
    1) run as administrator
    2) uninstall and install again Illustrator
    3) run Illustrator without antivirus
    but nothing, again the same.
I haven't delete the Illustrator settings file to reset the application (because I don't know which file to delete) see screenshot http://tinypic.com/r/2gw9bgw/6 tell me please which is the right file to remove.
BTW all the other programs (photoshop, flash, etc) works without any problems, and everything is up to date.
I have some double fonts (I read somewhere that maybe there is problem with duplicated fonts) Arial regular exists 3 times (in the preview C:\Windows\Fonts), and some Helvetica fonts, is there any safe free tool to remove duplicates?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Illustrator CS5 "Not Responding"

When working only in Illustrator and I try to save a file that I have open, illustrator "not responding" happens and finally responds after 30 minutes to an hour. This happens every time I try to use Illustrator for the past three weeks. I have uninstalled and re installed but no luck. Please any help or suggestions? New laptop and the rest of the adobe suite works fine.

    Nick,
Did you reinstall using the full three step way?
Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Progress bar do not show progress

    Hi there,
I have created one dialog with button and progress bar. When I click on button, I have functionality which is getting called through which I make some changes in  currently open Indesign document like drawing some graphic frames, placing images on them. I want to update progress bar present on dialog when frames are getting drawn. But the dialog box freezes when the document changes taking place. How to update progress bar?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello vDeepak,
it is not possible to have a progress bar working with dialogs. You can use palettes and windows but not dialogs. If you like to better understand how progress bars work, this is a very good resource:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3152162#3152162
It's a discussion based on javascript, but it would make sense.

  • How do I make Flash not look like it's not responding?

When I run a JSFL script that is pretty intensive and in depth, Flash opens up but doesn't draw itself, and lists "not responding" in the window title bar.
My question is how can I make Flash look like it's alive (either have output show up in the output window, or have the stage update to the current frame that is navigated to from JSFL script, or put up some dialog box like the export movie progress bar)?  The script sometimes takes about 20-40 seconds to run and the user may think that it's actually crashed.
I print out times of all my processes and functions, and eventually I get an output that seems reasonable. I thought printing output might help, but there doesn't seem to be a flush command for it that will force it to be written out.
    Thanks.

You can't: the iCloud server won't allow it.
