Illustrator objects missing when placed in InDesign

I created an Illustrator file that has text converted to outlines. Some of it is white and some of it is other colors. When I save the file as eps, pdf or export as jpg and then place the files in InDesign, the white outlined text doesn't show up. Advice?

First, save as .ai rather than .eps for better compatibility, and second, check the white text in Illustrator to be sure it isn't set to overprint. ID won't allow you to set white to overprint, and will remove the attribute when you change the color from black, but Illustrator isn't quite so nice.

  • Illustrator files sometimes have a white BG when placed in InDesign

What determines if an Illustrator .ai file or Illustrator .eps file will have a white background when placed in InDesign? Usually when I place a .ai file, the background is white, and when I place a .eps file, the background is transparent. But I have noticed in other people's files that placed .ai files have a transparent background. In all cases, the placed file is pure vector. I would prefer that the background be transparent all the time, unless I give the object frame a while fill in InDesign.

This Gaussian Blur is probably created as a bitmap effect, not as live transparency. That makes sense, too, since EPS doesn't support transparency effects.
No option to change this in InDesign, unless you want to resort to ad hoc hacks such as setting the entire image to "multiply".
You can try to get hold of the original Illustrator file; if the blur is done as a transparent effect in that, ID sohuld be able to process it correctly.

  • Illustrator vector images loses layers when placed into InDesign

I have a illustrator image that I want to paste into InDesign - I have tried pasting and placing however it appears both ways do not paste all the image elements. See below - any ideas?
Selected all and copied in Illustrator:
Then, pasted (and placed) into InDesign - missing neck, shirt

Pasting Illy artwork is for very simple drawings. Complex shapes and objects may not coming into ID exactly the way you want.
Why aren’t you placing the graphic?

  • Sharp Photo When Placed in Indesign, Text becomes Blurry...

I have a Photo (with Sharp Text) that when Placed in InDesign, the Text Becomes Blurry (as in Unreadable)...
What's Up with that? And, more Importantly, what can I do to Correct?  Thanks (can attach if needed)

Is this on screen or in print? Check Display Performance. Right-click on the image to change the display performance of only that image, or use the View menu to change the Display Performance of the document. Higher display quality generally slows the program down, although it can be slight. If the text is a text layer in Photoshop consider saving as Photoshop PDF. This will keep the file fully editable in Photoshop but the text will be vector paths in the PDF, rather then rendered raster art at the image's resolution.

  • Transparent background is white when placed in InDesign

    AI SC5 v. 15.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8
I've never encountered this problem before. I have very simple artwork in Illustrator and when viewed with transparency grid on it shows as black with no background colour.
In InDesign (CS5 v. 7.0.4)  it comes in with a white background to the art area despite having a frame with no fill.
I have re-created the artwork in Illustrator but the same thing happens - it is just type converted to outlines and expanded.
Any suggestions welcome as deadline is looming!
    Thank you.

This is a bit odd this is what I found.
that if you have a gradient with white in the gradient and you add say a drop shadow to the art,you have to set the art to overprint in Illustrator.
The two placed art work from Illustrator with the white box are not set to overprint. One is an eps and the other is an ai file
the transparency is will work with eps and ai file fine except in this circumsttance.
Is this anything like your at?
Can you post a screenshot of your art the appearance and layer panels included?

  • Objects missing when exporting to PDF, but show up when printing to PDF

Hi - I'm working with someone, both of us in InDesign CS4, and she has some documents that cause a few random objects to just go missing when exported to PDF (same on my computer). But when printing to PDF, they show up fine. They also show up fine if we recreate each individual object, but that can end up being a lot of work. She prefers to export to PDF because of quality. I'm drawing a blank on this one!
The attached file shows the issue. The green blocks just don't want to show up when exporting.

    Peter -
The links are just the PDFs of the black and white portions and don't really matter too much since they show up fine when exporting or printing to PDF. Our main concern is the green blocks, which are indeed the green areas of the plan you pointed out. They are actually separate objects created directly within InDesign that can be moved and adjusted.
I just updated to 6.0.4 and that didn't help. I wonder if this may be a variant of the bugs I was reading about with master pages and certain things not showing up when creating PDFs or printing (even though none of these things are on the master page)?
    Thanks

  • Cropped PDF's appear uncropped when placed in InDesign CS3

I have an original PDF that I only needed a portion of. I cropped it in Acrobat 8, using the crop tool and resaved it as a new PDF document. But when I place the new PDF document in InDesign the entire original PDF document appears.
    Any suggestions,

Select show options when placing and choose crop as the crop to option.

  • Images not centred when placed into InDesign CC 2014

    Hello,
Since updating to InDesign CC every time I place a new image into a doc it drops down within the containing box a by a few mm. Auto fit is not on and the problem happens when placing an image via cmd + d or dragging and dropping from bridge or finder. Any ideas?

Thank you for your reply. I ditched the InDesign Defaults pref but couldn't find the InDesign SavedData file. I have uninstalled and put a fresh copy back on to my mac, this seems to have resolved the problem. I guess this was a pref file some where, I just could locate it.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why does a TIF image look blurry when placed in InDesign file?

    Hi all,
I've placed a logo in my InDesign file that I saved out of Photoshop. It appear blurry when in InDesign and I do have it set to high image quality display so that isn't the issue. It is also set as CMYK and I haven't resized it after saving from Photoshop.
I tried saving a jpg so it would be crisper but then I have a white box behind it when placed in the InDesign file.
Any help is greatly appreciated as I need to send it to print but can't let it go until I'm sure it won't print like a blurry mess.
    Thanks

Sub-pixel sampling. Read up on it. you are placing your images at odd values and it gets resampled. Can be anything from the image inside the frame, the image frame itself, some styling option in ID...

  • PNG Renders from 3Ds Max turn pale when placed in InDesign , Why?

    Hello.
When I place my renders from 3DS Max 2010 in Adobe InDesign CS6  with OS Windows 7 they become pale, even when exported as a PDF. I have tried Googling solutions but this keeps bringing up transparency settings.
I know this information is vague but I do not know what other information is needed.
Does anyone know why this is happening or a solution?
    Thank you

You'll have a difficult time finding many people who place PNG files directly in InDesign.
That said, here is something you should check out. There is a setting for Applying Gamma Correction in the options when placing a PNG file. It was posted as an obscure feature in the most recent InDesignSecrets.com podcast:

Worth checking out to see if that might work.

  • Photos look different (bad) when placed in InDesign CS4

I'm having a problem in that my photos look bad when viewed in InDesign. I labor on my photos until they're looking perfect in Photoshop -- with just the right color balance and tonalities -- but when I place them in ID, they look much darker and redder, or oversaturated. Then I look at them again in Photoshop, and they look fine. What gives? Which program is showing the real state of the photo? Btw, the photos are using the same color profile in both programs and the monitor is unchanged b/w viewings.
I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what I can do about this? It makes me very nervous to see my photos looking so bad in InDesign, where I prepare my layouts for offset printing. Will they print as I see them in Photoshop or will they print as I see them in InDesign (which would be dreadful)? At this point I'm hesitant to make further adjustments and hoping it's the Photoshop view that's correct.
But why is this happening in the first place? Is there some setting I should be fixing? Or is there a color issue or incompatiblity b/w Photoshop and InDesign that I'm unaware of?
I'm using ID and Photoshop CS4 on Mac OSX 10.4.11
Hope someone out there can help me with this issue.
    Thanks in advance!
    Scarlett

There's a discrepancy in the way Photoshop and ID display images on the screen. I wasn't aware of this before.
If your display performance is set at High Quality there's no significant difference in the way color is displayed between PS and ID. The screen capture linked below shows a CMYK file with no profile assigned, side by side in ID and PS. The ID file has no profile assigned and the CMYK Working Spaces are the same for both programs:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/scripts/IDPS.png
You can check the RGB values of the screen capture in Photoshop and there is virtually no difference—I could only find an occasional 1 gray level in 1 channel shift.
If you are seeing a color change with a High Quality display setting then chances are you have a color management issue.
Syncing your Color Settings doesn't guarantee matching color between the programs because you are just syncing the program's Working Spaces, and they don't necessarily color manage the documents (assigned profiles override the Working Space). If you are assigning profiles in PS, the assigned profiles need to match your ID doc's assigned profile (which could be different then the ID Working Space)

  • Eps images looking pixelated when placed in Indesign

I am creating a catalogue. The images I am using are eps files.
In some instances the image once placed into Indesign come out completely or partly pixelated.
I have checked the display performance and it is on high quality. I am also placing the image not copy and pasting.
What do I need to do to fix the problem?

I don't know what PDF profile you exported to, but try PDF/X-4 and see if it results in a better PDF.
It sounds like the AI file could have either transparency and is being flattened or the PDF profile used to export is flattening the PDF gradient itself. The white lines...do they get larger as you zoom in? If not, they are stitching lines and usually do not print.

  • Pixelated Object when placing in Indesign

Hi everyone! I hope you can help me. I am designing a business card and need to do the background in photoshop to get the effects that I want. I want to do a large letter with some extra effects also that I can't recreate in Indesign or Illustrator. When I place the photoshop file in Indesign the letter is ragged (pixelated). I've tried everything that I can think of: the resolution is set at 400, I converted the type to an object to see if that would help, saved it in different formats. The anti aliasing is set to sharp. I can't figure out what to do.
I know all about vector vs. raster and understand that you should never do type in photoshop. But I can't get the same effects for this one letter in any other program.
Is there anything I can do or is this a lost cause?
Thanks so much for your help!

The next question is: is it pixellated in print, or just the preview on screen?
But this does sound like it would have to be an issue with InDesign.  Are you sure you have all the InDesign updates installed?

  • Why does my .jpg have a transparent object when placed in Indesign?

I have an product image .jpg that I am trying to place into InDesign, and when I place it, a part of that image becomes transparent. Have messed around with this for several hours now, checked color settings, tried saving it as different types, and for some reason it still keeps coming up with part of it being transparent. At my wit's end, could really use some help on this. Am using cs6 InDesign as well. Thanks

Considering the JPEG format doesn't support true transparency, I'd say it must have a clipping path installed. To find out, with the placed image selected, choose Object > Clipping Path... If "Convert clipping path to frame..." is enabled, (not grayed out) on the flyout menu, there's an active clipping path in the image. Do you have Photoshop?
