Illustrator or Photoshop to create web banners?

My company for years has worked with print products. We recently started creating web banners. We use Illustrator for the layout for print and Photoshop for the layout of web products. I have artists who dont see the difference between the two. They want to continue to create web banners in Illustrator. Or they want to export the Illustrator file into Photoshop with the layers. But, to export it this way it has to be cmyk. ugghhh. Can somebody please give me valuable reasons on what application is best and why? I understand one is vector and one is raster. But if you are using type and photos in the banner, which one is the best? Thank you very much!

If the document is RGB in Illustrator, then you can export layers to PSD. It shouldn't be a problem. I personally prefer Illustrator, but I do export to PSD and open in Photoshop if I wish to animate from there.

    Not true.
Illustrator is "best" for vector. Photoshop is "best" for raster.
I would let your artists work in whatever program they feel they produce the "best" art. You should be able to quickly and easily develop a workflow around their needs. If you cannot, then you have your answer too.

  • Creating Web Banners in Keynote

In my opinion keynote is the ideal program to create web banners. Easy animations, flash export. What I am looking for is a workaround to create SMALL foil sizes as 235x61pixels.
The smallest size I was able to create was a heighth of 200 pixels.
Has anyone an idea how to build smaller sizes in keynote?
    Thanks!!

You can create a presentation that's the same ratio, and then embed it in the web page at the size you want. For example, creating a presentation that's 470 x 122 will give you the right ratio. For your embed, you still would enter 235 x 61 though.

  • Creating Web Banners in InDesign CC

I need to create some static web banners.
They're a mixture of flat type/graphics, and mock photo collages with drop shadows.
InDesign is my strongest suit. Illustrator I'm decent. My Photoshop skills are lackluster.
Can I create them in InDesign CC, save as PDFs, open in Photoshop and Save for Web?
Alternatively can I just export them as JPGs from InDesign?
Is it better to create them in Illustrator?
Or do I need to buck up and learn to do them right in Photoshop?

Or do I need to buck up and learn to do them right in Photoshop?
I don't see a problem with using ID—it's certainly easier to set type there than in Photoshop. Guess it depends on the amount of type vs. image effects.
Just set the document up with web intent to the pixel dimensions you need for the banner. To get a same pixel dimension image version export to JPEG at 72ppi or to PDF and open as 72ppi.
If you are using OSX this AppleScript might be useful, opens the ID page as a layered Photoshop image:

  • Using Photoshop to create web graphics on a MacBook Retina Display

I have the new 2014 MacBook Pro with Retina Display and just downloaded the latest version of Photoshop. I've found that when creating graphics for the web (buttons, banners, etc), I have to zoom to 200% in order for the size of the graphic to be what will appear on the web. For example, a 600px wide banner appears to be 300px wide in Photoshop (even though it is, indeed, 600px when viewed on the web). I've learned that I have three options:
    1) design while squinting to see the very small object on the screen (not really a good choice),
    2) check the "Open in Low Resolution" box for Photoshop if I want my graphics to appear to be the right size when designing them in Photoshop, or
    3) continue zooming to 200% when working in Photoshop.
My question is: aside from the obvious annoyance factor, which of these options is the best choice for creating the highest quality graphics for the web? Are they both the same result... or am I hurting my graphics in some way by choosing one over the other?
    THANK YOU!

That statement indicates you have a bit of a misunderstanding about how things work.  It's not true, because you seem to be confusing the term "px" with a physical measurement. What you need to understand is that a pixel on a Retina display is far smaller than one on a non-retina display.
The key is this:  Images are upsampled by Safari when displayed.  Therefore, "viewed on the web", which you appear to think of as invariant,  is actually not the same from computer to computer.  Try this:  Put a 600 px image into a simple web page, then display it in Safari on your Retina system and screen-grab it.  Now measure the size of the image in pixels in the screen grab.  It will actually NOT be 600px as you have stated.
Why would Safari upsize a web image on a Retina-equipped system?  Because Apple realizes that if it displayed an image that's been prepared for a typical non-retina 100 ppi display, as most are, it would look tiny on the 200+ ppi Retina display, so it's zooming everything for you as a convenience.
I suggest taking some time to get your mind around how things actually work, and get to understand what a pixel really is, rather than making assumptions based on what you see.  Once you truly understand how images are actually being displayed, you'll be able to make the right decisions that work for you.
Keep in mind that Photoshop is giving you the use of each and every pixel in that beautiful 200+ ppi Retina display.  Safari is not, unless you program your HTML to take advantage of it.
The future of the web, in my opinion, is moving toward a model where images are actually provided at a higher-than-absolutely necessary resolution, and so high resolution displays will be able to make more of them, and people can easily use zooming to see even more detail as they want.
You might want to glance at this test page I created (and view the source to see how the HTML is coded):

  • Illustrating with Illustrator and Photoshop cs3

I am just starting out in digital Illustration and was wondering if any one could recomend any books or web sites that discuss using illustrator and photoshop to create illustrations?

That's a pretty broad subject CoGordo.
Sort of like asking "Can anyone show me how to use a wrench and screwdriver to build a robot?"
It leaves so many directions to go in that it's difficult to give a decent reply.
You might need to narrow it down a bit.
Are you struggling with the basics of the applications?
Are you currently an illustrator looking to expand your toolset?
Do you have ANY experience with either of the applications?
Are you experienced with traditional illustration?

  • I am trying to locate my serial numbers for the two creative cloud products? Illustrator and Photoshop.

We subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud last October, purchasing a single copy of Illustrator and Photoshop.
The Web developer we had subsequently left the company, and I removed and re-assigned the products to our new Web developer in the Adobe Creative Cloud admin console and sent the 'welcome' emails to him.
He said the mails weren't sent, so I re-removed and re-added him in the console but although it states the welcome email has been sent, the user is still marked as pending?
James has fried to use the products, both of which show up as trial versions, asking for the serial numbers to be entered to unlock the full products & I don't have any record of them, nor can I find them under the CC profile?
I purchased the software through Softcat and received confirmation emails from Adobe that the products were activated and ready to download.

  • Muse web banners

I have created web banners in after effects, exported the swf file and placed them in a Muse site I am building. When I try to upload to my ftp it will not load. I am thinking that my banners are just too large of files. What should I do? I don't know how to make the files any smaller without losing detail and getting some ugly alising.
If I make the banners in Edge instead, I haven't figured out how to export them to import into Muse...

I just did the drag and drop , then I did embed the file when placing them in muse. My largest of the multiple swfs is 22.1 MB, huge I know, so how can I export that smaller without getting poor quality?

  • When using library artworks created in Illustrator in Photoshop the 'placed' versions don't update in Photoshop even when they update in the library

I'm using a Mac and working in Illustrator and Photoshop. Here's my problem:
I would like to be able to add button designs created in Illustrator to my libraries for access in Photoshop. Pretty straightforward - just add the button to the library and then it appears in my library in Photoshop to be dragged and dropped into the file. I would assume that once you drop an item from the library into the page in Photoshop it would remain linked to the library instance but it doesn't seem to which is frustrating. So if I make changes to the original button in Illustrator Adobe then updates the library, but not all the placed instances on the Photoshop page/file. Am I missing something? If not that it is something that should be added.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I think I found a workaround, although its ugly and not condusive to a nice workflow :-/
The "Inside Aperture" web page had a blog post describing what I said above, about using Aperture previews as referenced originals in iPhoto: http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmedia/blog/2007/08/referencedaperture_previewsi.html
And in the comments below, I found this:
+"This works great indeed. I noticed something annoying using this method though.+
+If you edit a picture in Aperture and then open iPhoto which has already the referenced Aperture picture, the iPhoto thumbnail will not update itself automatically...+
+The easiest way to check this is to do a major adjustment in Aperture (i.e. From Color to B&W) and see that the thumbnail has not updated in iPhoto. So far I found two ways of fixing this but it is not really efficient...+
+1 - Rebuild the iPhoto library (long & painful depending on its size)+
+2 - Do an adjustment directly in iPhoto, apply it then revert to the original.+
+With the second option, the thumbnail gets regenerated."+
The bad part of this is then everytime you make an adjustment in an Aperture version and updagte the preview, you now have to go into iPhoto, find that photo, and make a change to it, revert to iPhoto original, (which is now the changed Aperture referenced preview), and the thumbnail gets regenerated. Ugly, and not very automatable .
I am going to try and start an email thread w/ the author of that blog post ot see whether he's found anything eise out.

  • Fireworks or Illustrator for creating web components

I just want to ask members who use Muse which program they use to create Web Components.  For photos I use Photoshop CC, but I am not sure which program to use for web graphics.  I know both programs have tools for creating web graphic, and that Fireworks is more designed to create web graphic, but which one is better Fireworks or Illustrator.
I am looking to trying to create some logos and maybe icons for my webpage, and as I am new to these programs I would like so opinion from you the members on which ones your use.
I thankyou in advance for reading this post and any opinions you may have regarding this.

Ultimately I would say photoshop is your best bet. You can do the hard lines, shading and blending for this type of thing fairly easily in photoshop compared to illustrator if you know how. Most web comic artist I know who do their work in color usually use photoshop to produce exactly this type of look. For examples look at Katbox.net/laslindas or 2kinds.com

  • Can I use Web Fonts in Illustrator or Photoshop?

I'd like to use a few of the web fonts for a clients project but I need to be able to have the fonts available for me in Illustrator and Photoshop as well as Dreamweaver and Muse.
I am a full Creative Cloud Subscriber and need to have complete integration across all or most products.
Thank you for help in advance

The short answer is this is not possible.
The long answer is Photoshop & Illustrator use print fonts installed on your system (True Type, Open Type, Post Script).
Web fonts (ie: Google, TypeKit, Edge, etc...) need a web browser to display them because they use file types that are not recognized by other applications.
    EOT Compressed
    EOT Lite (uncompressed)
TTF (raw TrueType Fonts for screen)
    SVG (xml version)
    SVGZ (gzipped version)
WOFF (gzipped, web only, cross-browser font)

  • Pasting from Illustrator CS4 to Photoshop CS4 creates graphical glitches.

I purchased the demos of these products and one of the first things I tried was working between Illustrator and Photoshop, something I do regularly in CS3.
Right away I noticed a huge graphical glitch when pasting an object from illustrator into Photoshop. Most of the time the object, when pasted, is invisible, has no bounding box, and creates a black messy frame around the document's window. Usually some part of this distortion affects other windows outside of photoshop and my desktop.
Here's one example of what it looks like.
    http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2ww1.png
No idea where the yellow frame inside my document came from, also a glitch.
I'm using an iMac that's a couple years old: Nvidia 7800GT, 2.33 GHZ Intel Core Duo, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM. Could there be a problem with my computer?

  • Blurry smart objects in Photoshop Save for Web jpegs

I create graphs, etc in Illustrator, place them as Smart Objects in a master Photoshop file before outputing Save for Web jpegs to use as PowerPoint slide backgrounds. Everything created in Illustrator or Photoshop through that process (Quality 80 or 100 with any of the SfW options on or off) Save for Webs are blurry when imported (at 100%) into PowerPoint. The only way I have been able to get anything crisp in PowerPoint was saving a Photoshop pdf. However, that was only the text created in Photoshop. The Illustrator Smart Object part was still blurry. Anyone have any idea on the best process to combine Photoshop and Illustrator files into one file for import into PowerPoint as a clean, crisp background? At this point I am open to all suggestions.

There are parts that are being added in Photoshop, hence going from Illustrator through Photoshop as a Smart Object and then onto PowerPoint. If I wasn't 5 months down the line and just nearing deadline, I would recreate everything in Illustrator. Assuming that I have to continue at this point down the Illustrator through Photoshop line of working, how do you designate pngs or jpegs to be 220ppi. Jpegs have a 1-12 quality (and 12 is still blurry).
Note regarding PowerPoint, I embed the full-page image into the background so others that are using this can't move (by accident or on purpose) the background.
