  • Creating booklet: Should image files from illustrator be in PDF format??

    Good morning,
Over the weekend i got thinking about a image booklet i am looking to create. Despite being a newbie, i feel as though i have made great strides in becoming familiar with both Indesign and Illustrator.
Having created artwork in Illustrator i am trying to determine the best format for placing my images into Indesign.
What i have been expecting to do is to convert the Illustrator files into pdf's and then placing these into my Indesign template. This is what i have been doing on my drafts. Seems there is no quality loss, however i am worried about the size of the file since it is predominatley image based.
I have no need to edit the link once i have finished the artwork in Illustrator IMHO.
Please bear in mind this is booklet is being sent to a commercial printers and being printed on a litho.
Could any of the wise sages on these forums guide me?
    Kind Regards,
    Don

    Hi Don
There really shouldn't be any need to convert your Illustrator files to PDF - the .ai format is (unless you specifically deselect the option on save) a PDF compatible file.

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

  • Illustrator missing plugins PDF Format.aip  Were is it?

    Any one!
When I try to launch illustrator I get an error saying it is missing plugins PDF  Format.aip.
I am unable to get the program loaded it stops loading altogether.  I have tried reinstalling the program as well no luck.
I am on  a PC with Windows XP needed to replace hard drive and do a new reinstall of Adobe CS4.
Everything is updated and installed fine.  Photoshop and others work fine   Just Illustrator.
Did search on the net not much help there can any help here!
I can not even find a plug in called PDFFormat.aip!!
Why would Illustrator need a PDF plugin?
    Any suggestions!

It might just be a permissions problem you have to manually fix it on the windows platform but it should read on all the directories dow to the file itself
    like such
that is where it says Sharing and Permissions you can on the PC find it in the properties panel I believe. On the mac control or right click on the applications icon, folder and file to get info.

  • Problems turning Illustrator pages into PDFs at the SAME SIZE...?

Something weird is happening for me, when I attempt to turn Illustrator layouts in PDFs or maybe it's "normal" for Acrobat to do this, but I don't like it and I want to fix it...
I have a page laid out in Illustrator. It's RGB, 1024x768 pixels in size, and has various JPGs at 72dpi placed on the page, and it has text on it too.
Everything is laid out pixel-perfect, and when I view it at 100% size in Illustrator, that's the size I want to the PDF to be as well, when the PDF is viewed at 100% size. The PDF is going to be viewed on-screen and the images contained in the file have various lines and suchlike in it that absolutely have to be viewed at 100% size, or they appear all blurry.
So I have my Illustrator document, at 100% size, and it looks perfect. I go to File > Save A Copy and save a version of it as a PDF.
I use the Illustrator Default settings (which, when I go through them all one by one, would indicate to me nothing about a file size conversion, no downsampling, etc.) and my PDF is generated.
However... when I then open up the PDF file in Acrobat Professional, the page it has created is way larger than my Illustrator page. So if I view my new PDF at 100% size, not only has the 72dpi image gone all blurry, but the boundaries of the page extend off the edge of my screen.
I would hazard a guess that in order to get my PDF to appear at the size it *should* be, I have to view it in Acrobat at *about* 75% - but the images are still blurry, because of the re-sizing.
So all I'm asking is for a simple way to get what's in Illustrator to convert to PDF at the same size.
Surely there must be a way?
    Any help anyone?
I'm using Illustrator CS3 13.0.2 and Acrobat Professional 8.1.2, running on Mac OS X 10.5.2 on Intel.

    > You can't. Well, YOU can, by adjusting your resolution setting in Acrobat...
    >No, even *I* can't. *MY* views in Acrobat and Illustrator of the SAME document, when BOTH viewed at 100% are DIFFERENT sizes.
Because you haven't adjusted your resolution settings.
    >And what do you mean by "adjusting your resolution setting in Acrobat" anyway? I *assume* you mean by adjust your view magnification settings?
No, that is your current magnification. Your resolution is set in the
"page display" section of Acrobat's preferences. Each user can set it
    differently.
    >But if I lay out a document or image intended for print in InDesign or Quark or Photoshop, the way I see it when I view it 100% size will be exactly the same as anyone else on any other computer will see it when viewed at 100% size.
    Not in Acrobat.
    > Acrobat is also used to create on-screen presentations, complete with hyperlinks and page transitions options, which obviously have no use in the print world.
Indeed. And people have free choice of how to view them. What you
can't do is do pixel-level design. You can control the open options,
like what magnification, whether the full page is visible, but you
can't control how many pixels that uses, so you cannot match it to
    some other application.

  • Problem printing Illustrator files, and PDFs containing Illustrator files

I have encountered weird problem with differenf Adobe file formats. Here are the files I had problems with
    1. opening PSD / JPEG files which had placed or embedded Illustrator graphs/ charts.
    2. printing PDFs from an InDesign file which had a placed or embedded Illustrator (eps) file
    3. printing original Illustrator files, or PDFs saved from the original Illustrator files.
Initially I thought that  the problem with with my external drive, where I had versions of the InDesign and PSD files stored. But then I tried removing Illustrations from PSD and Indesign files and they printed without any problems.
Some illustrations are created in the Illustrator itself, others were downloaded from a stock photography site.
Please help me figure out what is the problem.
    Thanks,
    Marina

    Hi Jacob,
I will find out re Post Script driver.
The printing window shows that I am connected to the printer (it's a network office printer) and that the document is printing, but nothing really happens. Meanwhile none of my colleagues can print anything because my file freezes the printer (if this is possible).
    It sometimes says "client-error-not possible"
And below is the error message that i see when i try to open some of the Illustrator files (this one contained graphs and charts). It does open the file, however, and i can even edit it. But, both, a PSD and a JPEG file that contain graaphs from the Illustrator file below fails to open on my colleagues computer.
I forgot to say that I work on a Mac.
I am wondering whether the files are damaged, or the Illustrator needs to be reinstalled.

  • PostScript to PDF Create Acrobat Layer

    Hi All,
I have problem with Post Script to PDF [Using Distiller].
When I Using option Export PDF There is an option "Create Acrobat Layer" It will get Layered PDF.   This works fine.
But when I using option PostScript to PDF There is no option "Create Acrobat layer".
Kindly suggest us How to get Layered PDF Using PostScript Options.
    Regards
    Hurix

To directly answer your initial question …
PostScript does not have the concept of layers. As such, producing PDF via distillation of PostScript cannot provide a PDF file with layers.
Per the rest of the thread, there really is no good reason to ever produce PDF from InDesign other than via export and this is especially true for a PDF file destined for print. Pitstop Server can indeed process PDF files. I assume you are using PitStop for preflight purposes? In the general case, exporting PDF from InDesign using the PDF/X-4 settings will yield perfectly-printable PDF files. The Preflight function might assist in finding design problems; the PDF file structure itself should be perfectly fine.

  • Why new file in Illustrator opens as .pdf?

why new file in Illustrator opens as .pdf?

An AI file with PDF compatibility has 2 forks, one fork contains all information to keep the file editable, the other fork is pure PDF which allows to place and import and open that very file without any conversion in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Reader and a lot other applications.
So it is not wrong, when an Illustrator file opens as PDF.
The question is how it happens, why it happens and what kind of problems you have or if you can ignore it because it is not wrong nor a problem.

Wie weet waar ik de Illustrator CS5 Help PDF (gebruiksaanwijzing) kan downloaden? Op de verwachte plaats verschijnt niets

    Hi Silkrooster,
Thanks for your suggestion. I've used the Adobe Remover Tool a while back (which, as far as I know, is supposed to remove all of your cached settings, etc.), and it seemed to clear out my errors for a while, but I've been getting quite a few again. Nevertheless, I've removed the "AIPrefs" file as you suggested in hopes that it will reset everything.
I'll see how it goes and update this discussion in a few days.
Thanks for your reply! And any other thoughts are still welcome.
P.S. I was able to remove my AI Preference file using these two tutorials in case anyone else needs to know as well:

  • Illustrator CS5.5 PDF X3 ca. 400MB groß

    Hallo zusammen.

Oder was meinst du?
PS: Die Arbeitsfläche beträgt 21 x 21 cm..

  • If I save an Illustrator file as PDF, isn't it still vector?

I was asked to send a logo to someone who wanted to wanted to forward it to someone else to use (possibly a printer or maybe even a newspaper or magazin)e, so I sent it to them in PDF format.
The person I sent it to just emailed me and asked me to provide it as vector.
So I sent the original Illustrator version as well as an EPS version.
Still, I thought this was odd. When I worked at a newspaper, we worked with PDF files that clients provided with no problem. The policy there was to open them in Acrobat Pro and re-save as TIFF. But I also often open them in Illustrator to make changes and it has never been a problem. When I open with Illustrator, they are indeed vectors.
Maybe they don't have Acrobat Pro or Illustrator, but even then, can't most DTP programs place PDF files now?
Sorry if these are stupid questions.

When sending a logo after completion to a client, I give a wide range of files for the exact reasons you mentioned. I have no idea what programs they have, or will have in the future. giving them a "package" allows them to have a great set to send to all areas of their company without having to come back and requesting more files.
I found great articles as reference in case you are interested:
    http://designinstruct.com/print-design/create-a-logo-design-from-start-to-finish/
    http://www.thedesigncubicle.com/2009/01/what-should-you-get-from-your-logo-designer/
    http://99designs.com/designer-blog/2011/05/18/file-types-logo-design/
    They advise:
1 x original Illustrator file (.AI) – Containing flat colour, graded and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
3 x Illustrator 8 EPS files – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
3 x PDF files – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
3 x High resolution JPEG images – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Export…)
The following files are often used when saving print designs:
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format developed by Adobe Systems that can be universally downloaded and viewed by any computer that has the Adobe Acrobat plug-in. Today, PDFs are widely favored by most designers — it can be saved as an editable file which is great for clients.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript file) is a vector format of your logo. It can be re-sized without losing image quality. Due to it’s high quality, it is commonly used with print elements such as business cards or brochures. If you ever question when to use it, ask yourself, “Will this be used for a high quality print?”
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is widely supported and works in almost any program. It produces a higher quality image than a JPG or PNG, but is not a vector format like EPS. It is widely used among publishing industries and photographers. It is best used in common things like invoices, page layouts or letterheads.
I hope that helps, Please post back with any other questions

  • Adobe Illustrator save as PDF

I'm not exactly sure where my new problem lies. I'm trying to save out single page PDFs from an Illustrator CS4 document with multiple artboards. Each artboard should become a PDF. I can get a multi page PDF, but when it saves single page files, I get white PDFs with error messages on them (I think it is saving .ai files with a .pdf extension).
this is where I am now (simplified, of course):
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
set docName to name of current document
    set itemNumber to 1
tell application "Finder" to set fileLoc to path to desktop as string
set pageCount to (count artboards in document docName)
    tell current document
    set allPlacedItems to placed items
repeat with h from 1 to (count of allPlacedItems)
set thisPlacedItem to item h of allPlacedItems
    tell thisPlacedItem to embed
    end repeat
    set allTextItems to text frames
repeat with j from 1 to (count of allTextItems)
set thisTextItem to item j of allTextItems
tell thisTextItem to convert to paths
    end repeat
    end tell
repeat with i from 1 to pageCount
    set pdfSaveOptions to {class:PDF save options, pdfXstandard:PDFX None, compatibility:Acrobat 6, preserve editability:false, generate thumbnails:false, optimization:false, acrobat layers:false, artboard range:i, view pdf:false, color downsampling:0, color resample:nodownsample, color compression:none, grayscale downsampling:0, grayscale resample:nodownsample, grayscale compression:none, monochrome downsampling:0, monochrome resample:nodownsample, monochrome compression:none, compress art:false, trim marks:false, registration marks:false, color bars:false, page info:false, page marks style:Roman, trim mark weight:trimmarkweight025, offset:6.0, bleed link:true, bleed offset:{0, 0, 0, 0}, color conversion id:none, color destination id:none, color profile id:include all profiles, trapped:false, font subset threshold:50.0}
set pdfName to docName & "TEST" & itemNumber & ".pdf"
set destFile to (fileLoc & pdfName) as string
save document 1 in file destFile as pdf with options pdfSaveOptions
set itemNumber to (itemNumber + 1)
    end repeat
    close current document without saving
    end tell

    Hi Stephen,
The problem is that the input for the page range is text (even if it is just one number). You're trying to put in a Number (the i you get from the loop). You'll need to convert the number to a string, probably by using the "as text" command.
What I use is (simplified): first check for multiple art boards (and set the range as text), if there is only one set the multiple artboards option to false, else set the page range. You don't have to build a loop to export each artboard seperately.
    tell document 1
if (count of artboards) > 1 then
set pagina_bereik to "1-" & ((count of artboards) as text)
    else
    set pagina_bereik to "1"
    end if
    end tell
    if pagina_bereik = "1" then
    save document 1 in file DestFIle as eps with options {class:EPS save options, preview:color TIFF, embed all fonts:true, embed linked files:true, include document thumbnails:true, PostScript:level 2, save multiple artboards:false}
    else
    save document 1 in file DestFIle as eps with options {class:EPS save options, preview:color TIFF, embed all fonts:true, embed linked files:true, include document thumbnails:true, PostScript:level 2, save multiple artboards:true, artboard range:pagina_bereik}
    end if
    Hope this helps,
    Ton

  • PRO-E to Postscript to PDF garbles some data in Distiller 8.1.2

We are creating Postscript files from Pro-E then using Distiller to create PDF files for distribution. This worked beautifully in Version 3.0 up to 6.0 distiller releases. We recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro 8 and are using the Distiller to create the PDF from the PS file. Same PS file is garbled in 8.1.2 What am I doing wrong in Distiller 8.1.2? What job settings should we use, or modify to get the PDF to mirror the Postscript file? We check the PS file with Ghostscript viewer and it's fine. It's odd that it works in the older version, but we would expect it to be worth the upgrade so to speak. We do know that Pro-E does output to PDF in it's latest version but we are not there yet.$$ Any suggestions?

I tend to think that if a new user account works as expected then there is a permissions issue, though I guess it could be a permissions issue with a font. If you boot with the Startup CD you can probably fix the permissions in the original account. Although, I've seen a new user work and repairing all permissions fail before.
You can attempt to remove the fonts you believe may be damaged. if you don't know which fonts this might be, try removing all but the basic system fonts, then adding them back in chunks. There may be an easier way to do this nowadays. I haven't had to deal with this problem in many years.
I work with multiple partitions, keeping a partition named "Base" that has a minimal OS on it specifically for problems like this. I log into this and run Disk Utility whenever things start to go haywire. I keep my installed fonts to a minimum.
