Illustrator prefs v. com.adobe.illustrator.plist?

In the past, when AI started acting up I would just trash the prefs to solve the problem, meaning that I would throw out TWO prefs files: Adobe Illustrator Prefs, in the "settings" folder in the preferences folder, plus com.adobe.illustrator.plist, further down the list. Now, with CS6, if I do that, I throw out my workspace settings with the bathwater (and probably a lot more settings I'm not aware of ), which I don't want to do. This is something new. Why? What is in each of thsoe preference files, and why are there two of them, and why have  the contents been changed to include the workspace settings? In terms of priority, this is an annoyance rather than an emergency, but one that will take me some time to repair.

The ilustrator prefs holds the settings you configure in your preferences accesed by CMD K.
The .plist file stores other settings often related to plug ins and tracks some info on files opened in the past. You can open either file in a text editor for more info.
Some rumors claim that information on each and every file you ever opened is stored in the .plist, which I find untrue (see below), thought there are some old references whcih probably need not be there. The .plist file on a few occasions gets out of control , especially "com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist". So if you see these files into the mb, is a good signal to look into that. My Illustrator .plist file is below for your comparison

  • Illustrator - problème com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist

    Bonjour,

    Hi,
    We have been tracking a problem for a while where our designers see extremely long file open, save and close times from Illustrator CS5 (Mac OS X 10.5.8 - 10.6.8) when they are connected to any sort of network, regardless of whether the files being opened, saved, closed are local or on a sharepoint.
    After some investigation we have tracked this down to Illustrator calling 'getattrlist' for every file listed in ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist when opening, saving or closing any file. This list of files can run into the hundreds or thousands, depending on the age of the com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist file. Obviously requesting attributes for several hundred files can take some time regardless of whether these are local or not and this operation can result in seconds to minutes of waiting for a file to open.
    Could somebody from Adobe please explain why it is that Illustrator needs to get the attributes of these files each and every time it performs an operation on a file? Also, why does it never trim this list? As far as we can tell, the list is never rolled, and every file the user has ever opened is listed here.
    We have resorted to just deleting this file ever time a user logs in, but obviously it does have some use to Bridge and the other CS apps. As far as I can tell from research, this problem has existed since the appearance of this file in CS3; it would be nice if this could be resolved, or at very least explained.
    Many thanks
    Dan

    This is a simialr probem that they had with the old type engine examnining each character and space to see if ti was correct when it only had to either find a specific character.
    At leas that was my interpretation of what was happening and by making the change the hang up does no longer happen.
    This could be very important for the Adobe Team in many ways and might be why large files in particuar hang Illustrator when they really should not be doing so.
    Visit this page and copy and paste your posting in it I bet you that Adobe contats you about this

  • Disabling updates on OS X using /L/P/com.adobe. product .plist

    Having read in the Acrobat Deployment Guide that as of Acrobat 10.1.1, there's support for placing a FeatureLockdown-like key in a plist in /Library/Preferences. This is detailed on page 142-143:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/content/dam/kb/en/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Enterprise_Ad ministration.pdf
    I'm specifically concentrating on Acrobat Pro X (10.1.1) in this case, and am testing on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I've placed a plist at that path:
    sh-3.2# defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro
        10 =     {
            FeatureLockdown =         {
                bUpdater = 0;
    Or, if you want the full XML plist contents:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
        <key>10</key>
        <dict>
            <key>FeatureLockdown</key>
            <dict>
                      <key>bUpdater</key>
                      <false/>
            </dict>
        </dict>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    It doesn't seem to take effect. I've tried restarting, logging in and out the user, convert to and from XML to binary plist format, nothing. I notice that Acrobat Pro X's updater plugin also knows something about a plist at /etc/defaults/AdobeARMOverrides.plist. Is this of any use?
    Also, the proposed workaround at 15.6.3 is wrong:
    "15.6.3  Preventing any updates
    To disable the application’s ability to update altogether, use a post install script to move, rename, or
    delete the Updater.acroplugin file from the <root>/Contents/Plug-ins/Updater.acropluginplug_ins
    directory."
    This should read "<root>/Contents/Built-in/Updater.acroplugin". I'm quite able to resort to this method instead, but I'd rather use the plist method so I don't need to remove the Updater with every minor update.

    Sorry for the delay, was on vacation.
    As is shown in my example, bUpdater is boolean. When else can you have "<false/>" as a key value? I've just verified in Xcode that it is in fact boolean.
    The permissions were previously 644, owned by the 501 admin user. I've changed this to root:admin mode 755. No change.
    I'm using Acrobat 10.1.1 on Snow Leopard Server.
    On the subject of docs, they don't indicate anything about ownership/permissions, and are actually unclear about the contents of the file. It says to create a new "file" ending in .plist, and then to add the "entries" of the dict, without showing an example of the <plist> tag and the DTD. The next section (setting the Updater to manual) also states path "~/User/Library/Preferences/", which has ambiguous context and is also _not a real directory_.
    Thanks,
    -Tim

    Is  "[failed] com.apple.xprotectupdater.plist" an error that I have to correct ?

    This is a fairly basic daemon that should instruct the launcher to open the /usr/libexec/XProtectUpdater utility every 24 hours. You can try loading it manually by running the following command in the Terminal utility (provide your password when prompted--it will not be displayed):
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.xprotectupdater.plist
    The daemon's contents should look like the following text, so locate it in the System > Library > LaunchDaemons folder and compare its contents to the following:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

  • Com.apple.safari.plist missing in preferences folder

    Hey everybody,
    my safari has become unusably slow. I checked for solutions and found out I should delete the com.apple.safari.plist. So I browsed my preferences folder in the library for the file and could not find it. I checked my whole Library for any Safari related file and there was none.
    Has anyone an explanation for this? I already reinstalled the OS which didn't change a thing.
    I hope anybody can help me please
    I am using a mid 2012 rmbp with 8gb ram, which has become a little laggy in general since the yosemite in update

    Unfortunately, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist didn't solve my original problem. Safari is still so superslow sometimes. And then its fast again. But Chrome is always faster and immediately responding. I've run a test with Etresoft:
    Problem description:

  • Where have my "com.apple.spotlist.plist" preferences gone???

    Hi,
    I was going to trash "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.spotlight.plist" in an attempt to solve a privacy list issue, but they are not there. I am looking in the correct folder(ie my home library etc) and have restarted a few times but they still don't appear... can anyone offer any help? Thank You.

    You're looking in the right place. Many prefs are created lazily, in other words:If you never modified them they wouldn't exist in your account but would jut load the defaults. Hope that's all it is

  • Problems with slow finder and com.apple.finder.plist

    I have four users in my marketing department, all running Mac Pros with 10.6. and Adobe CS5 and some other software for design work. Each one has a slowness issue using the Finder (by itself and inside programs (ie, within Photoshop and going to Open)) when accessing our network drives.  Other people, including myself, can access those same directories without slowness.
    'Slowness' is an understatement. What would normally take a second is taking 5 to 10 minutes to show content in folders.
    When I delete "com.apple.finder.plist" off their systems, and reboot, everything snaps back to being speedy, but it doesn't last and they need to remove that file once a day.
    I have two saved plist files before they deleted it, but I don't know what do look for when I view the contents with a plist editor.
    Can anyone offer some suggestions on why this could be happening? Or how can I view and see what this file is being hung up on?

    Download and run all the cleaning and maintainence aspects of the free OnyX while each machine is offline and reboot, leave offline until all are completed and then put them back online.
    See if that clears the issue or reveals some more issues with the checks.

    OnyX also has a plist checker under Verify.

  • Is it safe to delete com.apple.systemdfine2.plist ?

    I scanned for corrupted preference files using Cocktail 4.6.2 --  com.apple.systemdfine2.plist was the only system plist file identified (several user-level plist files were also identified; these have been deleted).
    According to Cocktail:
    XML parser error:
    Unexpected character " at line 1
    Old-style plist parser error:
    Unexpected ';' or '=' after key at line 2
    If it helps any, the first two lines of com.apple.systemdfine2.plist are:

    About a month ago this iMac started acting up and eventually crashed hard, requiring several erase / system reinstalls to get it functioning again. But it's not 100% back. For example, Time Machine has been iffy and interferes with some third-party software (e.g., in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, right-clicking on an image brings up a contextual menu that allows opening the image in Photoshop; however, if the Time Macine HDD is connected to this iMac, Photoshop opens but the image does not). I keep trying to repair things as they come up, which is why I went searching for corrupted preference files.
    Thanks in advance for your information and suggestions.
    John

    I don't know what that file is and don't have it on my 10.6. The only .plist files safe to delete are preference files. If it belongs to the System (/System/Library) it's not a preference file, it's meant to store code for running a process. I don't understand why Cocktail identified it.

  • HT5149 Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found. Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard

    Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
    Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
    Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
    1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
    2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
    3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
    4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
    5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
    Any suggestions on what I should try now?
    Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...

    Sounds like there is a file you're not getting.  Never do a removal manually.  It's so time consuming and a pain.  There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
    Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Download from scratch.
    If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
    If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives.

  • I'm trying to use import com.adobe.crypto.* on Windows version of my App but get error 1172:Definition com.adobe.crypto could not be found

    The Mac version of my Air app works fine, so does the iPad version, but the PC version has been a bit of a nightmare.
    I keep getting the error "1172:Definition com.adobe.crypto could not be found", when I publish it.
    Basically the 'com' folder is in the same directory as the app I am publishing and within that is 'adobe' and within that is 'crypto' within that is a series of .as files.
    I've added C:\Users\Gary\Documents\My_Applications\My_App_folder\com\adobe\crypto to source path list (I have no idea if that's right).
    But that just gives me a different error 5001: The name of package com.adobe.crypto does not reflect the location of this file. Please change the package definitions name inside the file.......
    I didn't have to include this source in the Mac version... but someone seemed to suggest it on a forum.
    I'm basically stabbing in the dark at the mount, something I seem to be doing a lot of these days. :-(
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    Gary

    I've figured it out
    Turns out I needed to add a source path (in the Actionscript 3 settings click on the Source File Tab) that exactly matches the directory the app and com folder is inside of. I wrongly assumed that Adobe Air could figure out where it was for itself, but no.... it needs to be told where to look for the com folder even though it's staring it right in its face. (Don't set the path to the 'com' folder itself, but to the enclosing folder that the .fla and the com is in).
    The Mac version doesn't seem to need that, it just finds the com folder if it's inside the same folder.
    Now I've got another massive error:-
    When I test the app, it works fine sending to Air for Desktop, however when I publish with embedded runtime for Windows.... It comes up with this error.
    Any ideas ?

  • Exception for syslogd in com.apple.alf.plist doesn't work after 10.5.6 upgd

    (This is cross-posted from the 10.5 Ins and Setup forum [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8902103#8902103], per the suggestion of a reader.)
    In 10.5.4, I added /usr/sbin/syslogd to the exception list in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/com.apple.alf.plist.
    This allowed me to keep the mediocre application firewall set to "allow only essential services" and still allow my router to send syslog messages to a log on my Mac.
    I upgraded to 10.5.6 (straight from 10.5.4). Since the upgrade, it appears that the application firewall ignores the additional exception entry I added.
    I've tried moving the exception entry up (replacing the one for configd), but it doesn't matter. I already know about /Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist, so you don't need to suggest that I delete it. It's re-created (as a binary) each time you unload/load the launchctl for syslogd, and it does appear to use the file in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/com.apple.alf.plist.
    The only two ways I've found to allow syslogd through are:
    1. disable the app firewall (choose "allow all incoming connections" (not my preferred solution)
    2. choose "set access for specific services and applications", which unfortunately allows all the specified applications (and probably allows Apple's hidden list of exceptions that includes things like World of Warcraft and Skype). The hidden list opens the machine to a greater number of attacks from trojan software, and I'd rather have the system locked down, not opened up.
    Does anyone know how I can recover the 10.5.4 functionality, which allowed me to add syslogd as an exception, instead of adding it to the GUI list of applications?

    I also want to receive log information from my Draytek Router I found a reference in the Draytek forum see:
    http://www.forum.draytek.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=12009&highlight=syslog+mac
    however when I updated the
    com.apple.syslogd.plist
    the required information did not get thru to the Draytek Syslog program.
    I am also using 10.5.6

  • Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

    Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

    Hi Bill,
    You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
    Hope that helps!
