Illustrator slow

Hi,
I run Illustrator CS4 on VISTA.
Illustrator is very slow.
Ex. I select a shape and it take a couple of second before I see the element selected. (by the way, the file isn't heavy)
Also, when using keypad function (Ex. Copy, paste) I have to repeat the keypad function more then once before it works.
I reset my preferences and it hasn't corrected the problem.
Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem?
Thanks

This might help;-

  • Illustrator slows down rapidly over time

    Hey,
since the CC version of Illustrator, the program loses performance quicker than ever over time.
I have the newest graphics drivers on my ATI and 16GB RAM, i7.
When i work with symbols, text styles and everything else you need for UI design, I need to restart the program quite often to keep working. Sometimes even clicking on things can take up to 3 seconds to be rendered on screen.
Why is the newest version of Illustrator slower than the pre-Mercury driven versions?

    Aloof,
Just to make sure (relevance depending on the previous version), are all the faces of the Verdana and Tahoma fonts installed and enabled/activated through the OS (not font mangement) as TTF (not OTF)?

  • Adobe/Illustrator slow down

With 2 Gbs of memory and hearing macs do not get Spyware/Virus', I'm sitting here wondering what could possibly be slowing my Adobe Photopshop and Illustrator down. It's Lagging, taking forever to load!
Now, I'm aware Apple didn't do a very good job with CS2 on a mac because of Rosetta but when this baby first started up, I was just fine and dandy.
Could it be my fonts? Just what type of maintenence is needed to make this go right. I've been through disk utility, disabled almost half my fonts. Being in the graphic arts industry, it's getting aggravating working and I tend to run home to my pc to get work done.
    Any ideas?

"I'm aware Apple didn't do a very good job with CS2 on a Mac"
Actually you are way off-base with that one. It isn't Apple's responsibility to make 3rd party apps work on a Mac, it is the 3rd party software manufacture's responsibility! Other than slow starts as Rosetta loads and begins translating PowerPC code into Intel code on the fly, most of us don't have issues with CS2 on an Intel Mac.
First you should go to Adobe and get the CS3 Universal binary beta. It is free to all registered CS2 owners.
Second, I would familiarize myself with basic Mac maintenenace. A good place to educate yourself on caring for Mac OS X is the X Lab.

  • CS4 Illustrator - Slow loading ai and pdf files

Recently, Loading a pdf or even a AI file seem to take 2-3 minutes ( going through a black page, to a refresh total white screen, indicating Not Responding ) to a window saying Processing and then finally the ai or pdf file appears.  Also, when copying one image from one file toanother it does the same thing.
What should take me 10 minutes to finish small changes in 30 files, takes me now over an hour.
I work in XPpro - and this has just started about 2 weeks ago.
    Thanks,
    JP

Perhaps two things can be at work here a corrupt or bloated cache file, does not have to necessarily be one of Illustrators cache files, two a corrupt font cache file. There are utilities that will empty cache files for you I think there is one or two for Windows that are free.
The other could be be a corrupt preference or user account. You can try a new user and see if that helps if so you might consider moving the Adobe Illustrator CS 4 Setting folder out of the documents and settings directory to see it it improves thing if does not you can move it back.
You can do a search to find the subdirectory for the settings folder.

  • Illustrator slow and unresponsive after OSX 10.6.8 update

After recently updating OSX to 10.6.8 from 10.6.7 I can't even move a shape in Illustrator CS5 without getting the rainbow pinwheel for 5 seconds or more, and some of my commands are lost completely. I wiped and reinstalled my computer and experienced the same problem after running the combined OSX update. Is anyone else having this problem and is Adobe patching for this? I've installed all the latest Adobe updates.

    Reset your preferences.

  • Adobe After Effects & Illustrator are incredibly slow on a fast computer :S

In serious need of a computer genius. I have a computer that should have a great performance although till now it's acting frustratingy slow with the Adobe Programs. I have the legal Adobe Creative Cloud. I mainly use Illustrator and After Effects and that is where I noticed the problems.
Illustrator: slows down over time. Over a period of half an hour the program gets extremely slow and laggy (happens with every project).
After Effects: Is really slow with rendering. Also RAM render goes extremely slow even with very very simple projects. (even a shape layer that only moves from the left to the right is RAM rendering frame per frame and takes half a second to render every frame -_-).
It's not workable. I have tried all kinds of forums and have all the settings of After Effects optimized.
My windows device Manager and System Information sais that everything is working ok. The RAM is detected by the System and also After Effects detects the RAM.
I don't know what the f*** is wrong.. Getting a bit mad here. Who can help me out?

  • CS5 Slow performance

    Hi There,
I'm trying to track down the source of slow CS5 performance and wondered if anyone else was experiencing this?
Personally, I've always found Illustrator slow when images are involved but I really want to use the new align to pixel grid feature for web wireframes and visuals before coding.
The issue we're experiencing is having to wait 1 - 1.5sec between mouse clicks. If we don't wait for Illustrator to catch up, Illustrator will select or move the wrong items. This is the same when in outline mode and on two 10.5.8 machines - A Quad Core Xeon with 8GB of RAM and a 17" Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM.
Has anyone experienced this? I currently have 3 layouts that use masked images and transperancy (nothing crazy and not more than I would use in Photoshop) but had hoped Illustrator could handle images based on the new tools aimed at web designers.
Fireworks has always had too many bugs (I try it in earnest every 6 months) and Photoshop tends to result in "Layer Hell" but if Illustrator isn't up to the task I guess Photoshop is still the only way to go.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

  • Swatches bugs

    Hi,
I am using CS5 for doing my design work, I have facing an issues of delete the unused swatches. Normally we will go to Swatches Menu bar and select All Unused, after remove all that will be fine. However, when I open in a new window to copy the template over, the colour swatches will pop out all those unused and make my whole illustrator slow and even pending the window, at the end will prompt error.
I have discuss with my senior art director, which he mention is bugs for the file and not possible to be fixed. However the design work I can't duplicate exactly as that is finalize artwork from my Client. I need help for it, if you need me provide the file, please give me your email, I can send for you to have a look the file.

    Michael

  • "Effects" before and after

    Hello all,
Is there anywhere I can go to see the "before" and "after" views of all effects? I am not yet familiar with all of the effect jargon, so if something like this exists it would save alot of time! (if it doesn't exist, I'm sure you guys could make loads from advertising as ppl like me would flock to those pages en masse).
    Thanks,
    Christie

The effects previews in Illustrator are not as advanced as in Photoshop. For example you have a outer glow effect, you turn preview on, all works great. now turn the preview off, and it is still on. So you cant toggle for most of them.  In sumamry Illsutrator effects previews can be buggy.
For the bitmapped effects I try to do them instead in Photoshop. EG: Outer glows distance and lightness are more accuratey previewed in Photoshop, even if you have doc raster settings set to 300 dpi. . Glow in Illustrator does not have a distance setting either, Illustrator slows down when using bitmapped effects.

  • Will CS5 have the same memory issues as past versions?

I've heard Illustrator's "not enough memory" alerts called a "bug" here and other places, and I'm not sure if it is or just a problem with 32bit apps.
A few years back, I bought a MacPro and built the ram up to 19 gigs, thinking that would help some of my Illustrator "slowness" issues. I've since come to understand that I paid a lot of money for a good computer, but still use an app that isn't built to take full advantage of the computer processor, ram, or operating system.
I'm using CS4, I use it for freelance work, and I'm constantly frustrated by its slowness or its outright stoppage when it accesses all of the little bit of memory its allowed to search for. (Common for me to work with intricate live traced art or detailed pieces with blends, transparency effects etc. Certainly no problem if I'm just working with simple filled shapes.)
I know that Illustrator CS5 is still 32bit, and I guess I'm questioning if anyone has any knowledge at all of Adobe going under the hood and doing anything to improve its performance. I'm having a problem reaching for big Creative Suite upgrade money if its just for a few new features and the same old sluggishness.
    Thanks,
    Tarzeck

    Wade,
That is your best excuse on behalf of Adobe?
We have the 64-bit technology for years! YEARS!
And you saying that Adobe have not used this technology for years because is part of the plan?
You must be joking! Seriously? Really?
This is part of Adobe's plan?
So version CS6 will be 64-Bit native when we have something better.
Are you defending Adobe or just making fun of Adobe?

  • Illustrator CC very slow to open and save large format files

I work in a print shop that prints biggish stuff. I will frequently have files that postscript to close to a GB or more. Working on simple vector art with a few images in CC is not too much of a problem, but I still notice CC is slower than CS 6. The big problem is when I get a few 200mb PDF's, or files with layers of transparent PSD files in them etc, big busy files, then AI CC really bogs down, or frequently crashes altogether. CS 6 is MUCH better. I don't have the font issues, AI CC works fine with simple files. Saving & opening these big files is such a problem, I just save them back to CS 6, but that causes problems too, I do not want to, nor should I have to have 2 versions open at the same time. I always try to optimize the files as best possible, but it is tough sometimes as they R supplied by the customer, and the time it takes. We save to a Windows Server 2008 R2 box over gigabit network, which I know is not best practice, but no choice with the sheer volume of files. Would B insane to try to keep track & copy them back & forth, and it was never a big issue with CS 6. I am the first victim in our office, but the other 3 Mac Pro's will B switching over to CC this week, and I know the operators will B crying.
Anyone else out there having the same large file problems?
    THX
    Mac Pro 2.4GHZ 12 core 32GB 1TB
    Mac OS X 10.7.5

I'm not sure Adobe would like this, but it seems to be working for us on Mac OSX 10.9.3 and Illustrator CC 2014
Go to your user Library > Preferences folder and open com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist using TextEdit.
Select all the text and delete it.
    Save the file
Get Info and lock the file.
I also removed the com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist.lockfile from the Preferences folder.
So far doing this really improves performance in Illustrator CC 2014. Opening and saving files happens at a reasonable rate; however there is a down side. Preferences no longer save. Changes made to pallettes, etc. have to be redone everytime Illustrator is opened.
Other posts mention having Verdana and Trebuchet installed. I didn't find this to help at all.
