Illustrator Smart Objects color inconsistencies

When I paste illustrator artwork into photoshop as a smart object, the colors are not reading as the same. Same sRGB profiles for both files. No tints used anywhere, 100% values used in illustrator.
Sometimes the shift is very slight. For example, C85D49 tagged in illustrator reads as c75d48 in photoshop.
Any thoughts as to why this would be?

Here'a link to the original file. http://adobe.ly/1d6uwA1
This was created with PS CS6. I recently had to do some modifications to it, and that's when I noticed the strange behavior with SO. Of course when I tried to duplicate the weirdness this morning, I was unable to do so. I know for certain though, that on two different occasions I updated one SO layer and the it replaced the contents of a different SO layer.
I did notice some other oddities while playing with this today. Here's what I did.
Open the file, and save with a new name to make a copy.
Edit a couple SO layers with Illustrator
Close the file and save
Open the file back in PS and again edit a SO
This time when I save the SO I get this message "This file has been modified outside of Illustrator. Do you want to continue". I say yes to save it. I only get this message after I have closed the file and reopened it for more edits.
Another oddity; if I leave a SO open in Illustrator by just saving without closing the file. Then close the Photoshop file linked to that SO. When I open a new Photoshop file and try to open a SO within it, PS thinks the SO that was left open is the one I want to work on. I have to close out the previous SO to get the new one to open correctly.
I work with a lot of Illustrator SO's in PS. So I will continue to monitor what happens, and try to pay very close attention to what steps I took if and when the weirdly linked SO layers happens again.

  • Illustrator Smart Objects are "Linking" to each other in PS file.

This strange behavior started after I upgraded to the latest PS CC which includes the "linked" vs "embedded" smart object feature.
When I edit previously created PS files that contain mulitple linked Illustrator smart objects, an edit to one smart object will update a different smart object within the same file. These are not duplicates of a single smart object layer, they are completely independent smart objects, containing different graphics.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there anyway to break the link between all Illustrator graphics within a document so this won't continue to happen?

  • Change colour of an illustrator smart object in Photoshop

Hello, very basic but somehow has me stumped, how do I change the colour of a smart object which is in vectorised form from illustrator dropped into photoshop.
The object is all grey I'd like to change it to all black. Thanks

In photoshop, double click on the vector smart object thumbnail
in the layers panel, which will open the object back in illustrator.
Make your color change in illustrator and then File>Save.
Go back to photshop and the object should be updated with your new color.

  • Updated Illustrator smart object in Photoshop views blurry

    Hi all,
This is probably an insultingly simple query but:
I've created a map in Illustrator, opened this as a smart object in Photoshop and dragged it in as layer in a PSD.
When needing to make changes to the map, I've double clicked the smart object icon on the layer list which has opened the Illustator EPS of the map in Illustrator. Made changes, saved and closed - all is going according to plan up until this point.
When I return to my PSD the smart object has updated alright but it looks all pixilated and blurry. The file hasn't been moved since I originally placed the smart object and nothing I do seems to give me a crisp updated smart object.
My only option, which is a pain, is to open the original illustrator EPS - make changes - save and start again in Photoshop.
There must be something I'm doing wrong.
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for your help, but still no joy I'm afraid.
Here are the screenshots doing it the 'save as' way:

  • Why do my Illustrator Smart Objects distort in PS when I press Apple T?

    Hi All,
I am placing a linked Illustrator file onto a Photoshop document.
I position the smart object and pressed enter.
Then I decide I would like to further enlarge and rotate the smart object slightly. When I press Apple T (to transform) it juest distorts.
    Why is this happening please?
    Correct image:
Distortion when I press Apple T to enlarge or rotate object slightly
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Many thanks,
    Ben

It seems the object scales to fill the art board it contains. Cropping the art board to the artwork bounds solves this problem.

  • Smart Object Resizes after edit

I have a photoshop file I created for a book cover that contains an illustrator smart object -- a rectangular box that I need to periodically change the colors of. When I double click on the smart object it opens in Illustrator and I can edit it. However, when I go back to Photoshop the rectangle updates and enlarges to at least twice the size.
I created the file a couple of months ago and cannot remember for sure how I made the smart object, but no matter what I do I can't get it to maintain its size after editing.
I did place a new version of the rectangle and can get that to work, but since size and positioning is very critical I would feel more comfortable if I could get the original smart object to work.\
    Any suggestions?

  • Overprint in Smart Objects

I have a CMYK Illustrator smart object in a CMYK Photoshop document. The smart object contains black line work that should overprint. However, when I preview the channels in Photoshop, the line work knocks out of the other colors. I tried Attributes > Overprint and Appearance > Multiply with the same results.
I can set the smart object layer to Multiply in Photoshop, but that multiplies everything, not just the line work.
    Any suggestions for a workaround?
    Eric

I see. So if I want black to overprinting Photoshop, I have to make it a separate smart object and set that layer to multiply. Not quite as friendly as I would have liked, but workable.
In my case, I ended up bringing importing a Photoshop file with the color layers into Illustrator and place the vector line art on top of it. This allowed me to keep vector art and control the overprinting.

  • Blurry smart objects in Photoshop Save for Web jpegs

I create graphs, etc in Illustrator, place them as Smart Objects in a master Photoshop file before outputing Save for Web jpegs to use as PowerPoint slide backgrounds. Everything created in Illustrator or Photoshop through that process (Quality 80 or 100 with any of the SfW options on or off) Save for Webs are blurry when imported (at 100%) into PowerPoint. The only way I have been able to get anything crisp in PowerPoint was saving a Photoshop pdf. However, that was only the text created in Photoshop. The Illustrator Smart Object part was still blurry. Anyone have any idea on the best process to combine Photoshop and Illustrator files into one file for import into PowerPoint as a clean, crisp background? At this point I am open to all suggestions.

There are parts that are being added in Photoshop, hence going from Illustrator through Photoshop as a Smart Object and then onto PowerPoint. If I wasn't 5 months down the line and just nearing deadline, I would recreate everything in Illustrator. Assuming that I have to continue at this point down the Illustrator through Photoshop line of working, how do you designate pngs or jpegs to be 220ppi. Jpegs have a 1-12 quality (and 12 is still blurry).
Note regarding PowerPoint, I embed the full-page image into the background so others that are using this can't move (by accident or on purpose) the background.

  • Smart Objects Vector Resizing is Blurry

    Hello all,
I was hoping someone could help me out with this. It's driving me nuts.
Basically, I've always used a combination of vector objects converted to smart objects to retain the ability to resize an object within my master comp...but also be able to make changes to the layer within the smart object if need be. Basically, the primary purpose of a smart object
However, lately, when I convert a VECTOR object to a smart object and increase it's size, the image becomes blurry. Any idea why this is happening? I've linked to a video clip i made to help demonstrate the issue below.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3645/smartobject.mov

I appreciate the reply...but this has always worked in the past. Even with more complex layers.
If you think it worked in the past, its probably because you had an Illustrator Smart Object. Using Illustrator Smart Objects is the only way you can get genuine vector scaling to work, so that its completely lossless when you rescale.  Photoshop vectors only rescale based on the resolution of the child document.
In the case of your example, you can sort out the problem by opening the Smart Object, upscaling it, and saving. You will then have to go back to the master document and transform the object down again by the same proportion.

  • Can you extract higher resolutions from Smart Objects or Linked Smart Objects?

When I am designing at 1x resolution, can I extract assets from smart objects or linked smart objects for 2x or more? If so, how do they scale up?

    Yes with caveats.
PSD and Illustrator smart objects are also re-rendered and smoothly scaled to the requested resolution.
Other smart objects (including those with filters) are only scaled up from the resolution they are at within the Photoshop file. If you want them to re-render, you can paste them at 100% resolution into a linked smart object and get the smooth scaling.

  • PSD Smart Object Output

So I work in production and tend to get files from one designer who likes to place Illustrator smart objects into Photoshop. This includes everything from headlines to small 6pt type as well as vector backgrounds. Since I need to send these files to various printers and have no control over how they output the files, I have been pulling his vector objects and recreating the files in Illustrator—he ususally has very little photoshop effects on his smart objects so it's not too difficult to do—just time consuming, as often the smart object is not to proportion when I export it.
So my question is, am I creating more work than necessary for myself? My belief is that I will get a cleaner output from Illustrator (especially for small type), plus I often have to repurpose designs into new sizes. Or does photoshop handle vector smart objects well enough that I could just leave everything.
    Using CS6.
    Thanks
    Jeff

I assume you used CS5 in both offices?
Before CS5, SOs did not work on the principle of external links. If you were using CS4 or earlier, it's not likely you saw an edited SO just because you made an edit to your original AI file. There's no connection between the two.
Up to CS5, SO data is stored INSIDE Photoshop. When you double click an SO, that temporary file (the one you're asking about)  opens to make your edits, then "disappears" once you save it. That's how and when the SO is updated.
It's my understanding that there's a plug-in or patch for CS5 that WILL permit linking. I don't have it but have read references to it in this forum. Someone will be along who knows more. But if such an add-on does exist, it's possible your success in the first office was due to it, and the machine in the second office didn't have it loaded?

  • How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

i have a psd image file in photoshop cc 2014 that has transparent background layer. I wanted it to convert to vector. The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. But in case of High Fidelity Conversion, the ignore white option is not available, what should I do now?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • Smart objects and convert color profile behaviour

I get different results when converting to the same color profile before and after converting to smart object. Why?
    Do the following:
    1. create a cmyk document with color profile 'Euroscale Uncoated v2' and fill the document with the color 86, 32, 14, 0
    2. change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values change to 73, 29, 16, 0, no color change on the monitor
    3. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
    4. create a second document like in step 1
    5. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
    6. now change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values stay the same, this time we have a color change on the monitor
Why don't I get the same result?

I found this topic looking for an answer to this exact same problem.
Many of you refer to it as a bug / unexpected behaviour, which i thought it was either. But after some tests, it seems very logical behaviour actually to me now.
It simply follows the rules in the color settings.
In "Color Management Policies", when CMYK is set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles", it keeps the CMYK numbers for smart objects. Setting this to "Convert to Working CMYK" would make the color conversion as expected.
However, i don't think this would be a good idea (depending on your workflow offcourse). For example, pasting a 100K shape from a coated.icc illustrator file into an uncoated.icc photoshop file, as a smart object, would convert the 100K (not keeping the CMYK numbers).
I guess the workarround with a CMYK smart object into an RGB smart object (or maybe LAB), is ok to use when CMYK to CMYK conversion is really necessary for smart objects.

  • Why does the color of a smart object differ from the actual shape that it was made from?

I have some smart objects in a file that I've been working on. For example, I have a simple replay button shape. But, for some reason the color of the smart object differs from the actual color of the shape. In other words, if I sample the color of the smart object it has a hex code of ae7f2c (image1). But if I double click into the smart object to see the actual shape color the hex code is correct: a37e2c (image 2). It's a very slight shift, but causing me to go off brand colors for a client that I am working for. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for your help.

How did you create this smart object? Paste from Illustrator. A shape layer from Photoshop?
If from Illustrator turn off color management, copy and repaste into Photoshop.
