Illustrator substitutes fonts when opening document without warning.

Have an annoying issue hopefully somebody can shed light on. When we activate fonts using font management software, work on a file, close the file and then deactivate those fonts, if we open the file again without turning the fonts back on, the file will load without giving a missing font warning and substitute the fonts to myriad. In a few test, the fonts were still open, and no substitution occured, BUT, random blocks of type were inexplicably empty. When the file gets reopened with fonts reactivated or if Ilustrator is restarted, everything behaves normally.
This was tested on os 10.5.8 on multiple machines using Illust CS4, Suitcase, Universal Type Server and Font Explorer X. Test were made both before and after using Font Nuke to clean font caches to the same effect.
Anybody have any idea how to prevent this behavior? I don't want Illustrator to substitute fonts without warning me that fonts are missing....ever. If it must, can I have it substitute to wingdings or chinese characters or something that will be a bit more obvious than myriad?

Yeah, this is very big and money cost problem, happened to me a few times and couldnt find and answer. To try to prevent this  I did this two posible options, but is not perfect...
1. There is an option under the page setup uncheked by default named "Highlight substitude fonts" so you have to check this option for every document you have and make, what a nightmare, this must be checked by defalut, please adobe team...!
2. Also yo can try to change the default font following this steps, another nightmare because not always work
To change the default font for Illustrator CS4
Choose  File > Open and go to Documents and Settings/User/Application  Data/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings/New Document Profiles  (Windows) or to Users/User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe  Illustrator CS4/New Document Profiles (Mac OS).
Open  one of the default document profile template files (Basic CMYK, Basic  RGB, Mobile and Devices, Print, Video and Film, or Web, depending on  which type of document you intend to use).
Choose Window > Type > Character Styles.
Select the Normal Character Style and choose Character Style Options from the palette menu.
Select Basic Character Formats and choose the desired font from the Font Family menu.
Click OK, and then choose File > Save and close the file.
Restart Illustrator
Give it a try and tell us..

  • Auto substitute fonts when opening document

I am bringing over several hundred documents from a client into InDesign CS5. Upon opening each document, I'm getting a MISSING FONT dialog with multiple fonts that we do not have on our system. We do have authorized substitutions for each.
My questions is whether we can setup a Font Substitution list (or some other method) where those missing fonts are automatically changed/updated to the fonts we specified.
    Thanks all.....

Yes, with several hundred documents, I'd probably just buy the fonts. Save you a lot of work.
If the documents are properly set up with paragraph and character styles, you'd be able to "import styles" from a document that has style definitions using the new fonts. But any local overrides will stay unless you remove overrides, which may drop some formatting that you actually want to keep (subscripts and italics that were done with keyboard shortcuts instead of character styles, for instance).
It would probably also be possible to export the documents as tagged text, then in a text editor very carefully examine the lines where the old font names show up and globally replace those codes with codes for the new font taken from a tagged text document exported from a file with the new fonts... but that could be more work than using the "find fonts" feature, and I'm sure there are ways it could go wrong.

  • Illustrator CS3 hangs when opening document

    Hey
Since this morning, on one of our Intel iMacs, Illustrator just won't open any documents. The program load screen shows up, completes and gives you the dialogue box about opening recent files or new files etc. But when you try and open anything you simply get the colour "wheel of death" and you have to Force Quit Illustrator.
I have tried deleting preferences, reinstalling, and running programs like Onyx to clean disks etc, but nothing seems to work. We have also taken the files over to other Macs where they open perfectly fine. It's really just on this one iMac.
Any ideas would be very very helpful.
    Thanks

Very strange. I'm looking into it now. It was just a DVD with some of our old backup files. The designer was trying to look at previous work files. It caused the crash on his iMac and on a Macbook Pro that we have extra. I also put the disk into my G5 PPC and I wasn't having any problems, until I tried to open a specific Illustrator file on the disk itself. Must just be a corrupt file of some sorts. But as soon as I remove the disk again, everything runs smoooothly :-)

Do you know what kind of docs they are? Did you upgrade/Update Firefox lately?

  • Error when opening document with ECL control: INVALID_DATA

    Hi Gurus,
I've tried to search the net for this problem but could not find anything and I'm stuck now.
    Description:
we're using ECL to view attached documents (to POs etc.) which are stored through ArchiveLink on the content repository.
when we try to open this document, time-to-time we get following error:
Error when opening document with ECL control: INVALID_DATA
    Message no. SDV004
by time-to-time I mean that when we try to open same attachment again it opens successfully (sometimes we need to re-open it 3-4 times to get it)
what we've tried is to enlarge timeout for HTTP protocol (tx SMICM, from former 30 to actual 60) but only effect we got is that we're waiting for the error longer time
It will be really great if anybody of you guys can give me an advice where the problem can be or where should I look and what to check
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi Christoph,
thanks for tip, unfortunately this was already flagged, currently settings are:
    for Display Settings:
    yes - include ECL control
    use HTML control
empty - maximum viewer wait time
(do you think that setting some value for this could help)
yes - deactivate generic object services in viewer
no - doc display as dialog box
yes - deactivate data provider cache
    Storage Settings:
yes - always copy document class from document type
    yes - permit multiple assignment
    Thanks,
    David

  • I get missing fonts when opening a PDF, but the fonts are activated, I get garbage

I get missing fonts when opening a PDF, but the fonts are activated, I get garbage

The activated fonts are not the same version as those in the PDF. If you use Type>Find Font and replace the fonts with ones from your computer does it work?

  • InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent

InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent, and a document that hangs InDesign, after restarting InDesign, will open fine. I found the following track, Re: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding  for instructions to "force a hang into a crash" and am posting the crash logs to  pastebin.com
This is the sample process report OPI_Sample9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
This is the corresponding InDesign Crash log OPI_InDesignCrashLog9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
I am hoping that someone might be able to read the logs and tell me what is causing InDesign to hang
For more background information we are using Mac OS X 10.10.3, Within indesign we are using an editorial management software called "NewsEngin GPS" that utilizes Rohohiko's ADIP ToolAssistant plugin and an advertising management plugin "Pagelink" from Mactive/NewsCycle Solutions. These are the only 3 third party vendors that are being used and of course all claim that their products separately are stable under Mac OS 10.10 and InDesign CS6 v8.1.

Did you try to export the INDD file to IDML, open that and work with the new files?

  • Problem with fonts when opening a pdf in Illustrator

Hi all! I'm working on a pdf. I do NOT have the original. So I've found it's easier to open the pages in Illustrator, make edits, and resave as a pdf. The problem is that Illustrator is converting some text to outlines. It is saying I don't have the font, but I do. In fact, on the same page I'll have 4 lines... and some will be converted to outlines and some won't... and they are all the same font. Is there a way to tell Illustrator to NOT convert the font to outlines? I don't mind if it uses a substitute font... it's easy to go in and change the font to the right font. But I don't want the text converted to outlines. Thanks.
    Julie
PS I'm using CS 4 on a Mac.

Thanks, Scott. But I'm not sure what you mean by "pretty standard." Are you saying this is, in fact, default behavior in AI 14?
I'm still at AI 12 (CS2), and "standard" behavior (when the font is not available) is for Illustrator to do a font substitution, not automatically convert the type to outlines.
Is this, perhaps, what the new 'Missing Glyph Protection' does in AI 14 (as Myle suggested in post #1)?
If, in fact, this is the new default behavior, I would hope that Illustrator provides a warning (and an option to not proceed) given the highly destructive nature of converting type to outlines.

  • When Illustrator substitutes font, how do I know which one?

Here's what happened. Can anyone explain?
    1. I opened art from someone else.
    2. Illustrator asks for HelveticaNeueLTStd-Lt, which we don't have. (Says: "Font not found on the system, missing font has been substituted.")
    3. I click "Open" to continue opening the art.
    4. Art looks fine at first glance so I go to Find Font.
    5. It shows the font as missing; the font is listed in <brackets>.  (There are no other fonts in the document.) It shows me where it is used.
    6. I highlight the text and check Illustrator's Character palette.
    It shows the font is:
    HelveticaNeueLTStd Lt
    Lt
    7. ?? We don't HAVE that font. So WHAT did it substitute?? It seems like it just made up the font on the fly, and put that font's name in the Character palette, even though we don't have the font!
    Using CS5 15.0.2 on Mac with 10.6.8.
We have been using Suitcase Fusion; that also reported the missing Font. However, I disabled it (shut off the Core) because I wanted to see what Illustrator itself was doing. Having done so, I'm none the wiser.
What I really want to know is:
    1. WHAT FONT IS IT USING?
    2. How come it seems to look like the missing font?  (According to customer's PDF it seems a bit thinner, but it's darn close.)
    3. WHY does it list the missing font in the character palette, instead of the one it actually substituted?
    4. How do I get it to tell me what font it actually substituted?
    Thanks, anyone... everyone...

Thanks, Jesseham. You're right, it's Myriad. I know that because if I place a duplicate of the text right beside it, and change THAT text to Myriad, it looks the same as my substituted text.  It DOES show up missing in the font list (under Type>Font menu). I can understand, I guess, why it lists the original font in the character palette so, as you mentioned, we know what it was originally; however, I wish SOMEWHERE it would tell us what it actually IS.
(To complicate matters, a newbie in our department apparently opened the art, ignored the font message, left the substituted Myriad, created a PDF, and sent to the customer for approval, which they did. Which puts us in an awkward position, especially now that the artwork has "RUSH" status, if we now go back to them and say we don't have the font...)
I cleaned the font caches twice, via Fusion's font cache cleaning.
Does anyone out there know how to change the default substituted file?  I'd like to have everyone's Mac substitute Courier or something equally obvious.

  • [CS4][AS] Detect problems when opening document

    Hi,
    Can anyone please help me?
I'm trying to write a applescript that opens a indesign file, prints the document, and closes the file again.
Everything works fine but when a file is opend, and there are some missing plugings, assignments, fonts, images, .... the script stops.
How can I  detect if a error appears when opening a file? The file then has to be ignored...
How can I detect if anything is missing before printing the file?
    Thanks
    the script:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
    set myDocument to open inInputFile
print active document using "HighresPreset" without print dialog
    close active document saving no
    end tell

    Hi:
Sometimes you may want your script to proceed even if there are errors opening it. In that case, you can use the Preferences Suite -> Script Preference for user interaction level:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
       tell script preferences
return user interaction level -- see what it's set to currently
--set user interaction level to never interact -- change it
       end tell
    end tell

  • ID crashing when opening document in 5.0, converted from 5.5

    I have 6 documents which I got as IDML-files.
They are originally made in 5.5 - I'm using 5.0. Working on a mac (OSX 10.6.8)
When opening a document ID freezes. Then I make a forced close down - and start ID again. And then the document is opened and I can work on it.
This happens with 5 of the documents - the 6th opens without problems.
Any suggestions on what to do?

    See
Troubleshooting 101: Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences.
Also, we can debug your hangs.
Run Activity Monitor and select InDesign.
Choose Sample Process. Save the file and upload to http://pastebin.com/.
Then go to View >Send Signal: Abort (SIGABRT) and force the program to crash.
You'll get a crash report.  Also upload that to pastebin.
Post the pastebin link here. We'll look at it and tell you what ID is doing when it hangs.

  • JS/AS - Open file without warning dialogs

    I have files with placed raster images that when opened need to be relinked. Relinking them is actually the first procedure of my script however I need illustrator to open the file without throwing me an error dialog asking me to repair the link. I've searched through the documentation but haven't found a param to pass, or a different method to call for opening without dialogs. Applescript has a 'without dialog' option for open but it doesn't work for this dialog, that i've found. And JS doesn't have an options that i can find in the documentation for open();
    Thanks
