Illustrator to Indesign - copy/paste

I created a design in Adobe Illustrator and then select that design, copy and paste in Indesign.
Everything comes fine and looking fine in Indesign but when i export that as a PDF then one thin line is shown on page because when i paste a design then Indesign splits that design in parts.
There is any way of solving this problem.

> File > Place can be used if i save the file in illustrator in a format which understands by indesign otherwise have to do copy/paste...
Uh, yeah. That's what I'm saying. Don't Copy and paste to get Illustrator art into Indesign. save the file as AI, then use File > Place. The only reason to copy/paste is if you want the be able to edit the artwork within Indesign. This might apply to paths that are easier to create or edit in Illustrator that you want to use as frames in InDesign. Some people like to do this with logos so that the colour is easy to change within Indesign (I'm not one of those people).
But for the vast majority of cross-application uses, Placing a file is the smarter move.

Would you please advise if the image quality is the same when copied/pasted, rather than "placed" into my inDesign document.....
While copy/paste of images is dangerous poison in general
If you set your Clipboard Handling preference to Prefer PDF When Pasting it's hard to find any evidence of a quality difference between pasting and linking, at least on OSX. A pasted image is embedded so there might be a problem with file size if you pasted multiple large pixel dimension images and it would be harder to edit the image once it is pasted, but Acrobat tells me the same image linked and pasted have the same resolution and color properties.
This PDF/X-4 has the same CMYK image pasted from Photoshop and then linked. Both have Coated FOGRA27 assigned. Acrobat's Object Inspector shows no difference in resolution, bit depth, or color space:

  • Image editing in InDesign (copy and paste from Illustrator)

    Hi
I have a scenario and I hope someone can clarify:
I work on a Mac using Adobe Illustrator & Indesign CS4. Whenever I copy and paste/drag an image from illustrator to Indesign, that particular graphic is uneditable in InDesign, and that is ok.  I want it like that for the clerk/typists to use in their InDesign files.
However, on a PC with Vista, when the graphic is copied and pasted/dragged from illustrator to indesign, that graphic becomes editable using the direct selection tool in InDesign.  What I want to know is if there is way to turn this off on the PC version like on a mac?
    thank you in advance
    Dee

    Hi,
maybe the difference lies with the way Illustrator pastes the images.
Here with my trusty CS3 in the "File and clipboard preferences" (translated from the french) I have a choice of exporting the clipboard in PDF or AICB.
If I understand your message I would guess that the Mac exports as PDF and Vista exports as AICB.
A check of the preferences could help with that,
    good luck.

  • Copy & Paste from Illustrator to InDesign CS4

    Hi,
I am aware that there are issues when copying/pasting from Illustrator to InDesign, in particular:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6bdda.html
    I have the following problems:
1- I copy and paste text from Illustrator to InDesign on the same platform and some (not all) of the text is converted to outline in InDesign. The same font is available to both applications. Why this behaviour?
2- I copy and paste objects containing text from Illustrator to InDesign and some of the objects appear to have moved respective positions when pasted into InDesign. Is this to be expected?
Are there solutions to these problems? Note that if I expand everything in Illustrator prior to copying and pasting into InDesign, none of these issues occur, but everything is obviously in outline form, with the limitations it entails.
My clipboard settings are as indicated in the link above, but I have tried other settings with no more luck.
(Important: Before pasting a graphic, make sure that Illustrator is configured to copy as AICB (see Illustrator Help). In InDesign, make sure that Prefer PDF When Pasting isn’t selected in the Clipboard Handling preferences. If these options aren’t set properly, the Illustrator graphic cannot be edited in InDesign.)
It is not practical for me to create an Illustrator file for each of the Illustrator graphics and import those files via Place into InDesign. I must use Copy/Paste.
    I use CS4.
    Thanks.

You can copy/paste from Illy to ID by selecting the text with the type tool in Illy and then pasting it into ID. You will not be able to maintain the formatting. If you want to maintain the appearance the text will be converted to outlines.
If you need to get anything other than very simple objects from Illy to ID then you should save as AI and use the file > place command to place those objects as linked graphics into ID.
Your closing statement is irrelevant. Whether you like it or not, this is the way it is.

  • CS3 & Leopard - can't copy/paste from InDesign Illustrator?

I have just loaded Leopard and then CS3 onto my new MacBook Pro and then upgraded my existing iMac with another Leopard and the same CS3. Neither machine will allow me to copy/paste images or text boxes from InDesign > Illustrator - It appears to try to (shows the working color wheel - then nothing happens) It will allow me to select/copy the text WITHIN a text frame but will paste text only - not attributes????? I can copy /paste Illustrator >InDesign. also have no problem between Photoshop and either of InDesign or Illustrator?????? Have spoken to Adobe - they have no solution at this point and are 'getting back to me'.... Not a problem on Tiger/CS2 on iMac before upgrade. Appreciate your help!

Possibly running out of ram since it needs to rasterize for photoshop. Save the ai file then let photoshop open it.

    Hi All,
Is there options to get the image copy & paste into the Indesign, if i done manually the frames and lines stroke, colors, are coming fine, but the text object only converted the image. i want to edit text  in indesign.
this is possible for scripting or manual?

  • Copy/Paste graphic w/drop shadow to indesign - loses transparency

See above image.. I made a vector version of our company logo in illustrator (all programs referenced are cs5 btw) and it looks great, but when I copy and paste from Illustrator to InDesign, it loses the transparency around the logo. If I place the logo instead, it works fine. The trouble is there are about 16 variations of the logo, and its MUCH easier to copy/paste from one aggregate file instead of having many different logo files to place.
Background on how the logo was created: The inner circle area is multiple different gradient layers (some with transparency masks as well). The white line around the outside is an expanded stroke, and it had a drop shadow effect applied (Stylize menu), which I expanded so it would scale properly when scaling the logo up and down. Here is a link to download the logo: download logo
Q: Is there any way to make InDesign preserve the transparency when I copy and paste?
Would be eternally grateful if someone has a solution that allows me to copy/paste!

I agree with Bob's suggestion to use separate "layer groups" in your logo file for different styles. I also use separate layers inside InDesign to "multi-purpose" company documents with different backgrounds, graphics, and content. But that's the only way I use layers inside InDesign – Not for general placement of image files! I also disagree with ability to copy and paste graphics from Illustrator with drop shadow. Here's an .ai logo which I quickly added Drop Shadow to in Illustrator CS4, and then a Copy and Paste into InDesign CS4 document. Best workflow practice is to 'Place' image files as Bob suggests, linking them from a separate file folder.
For something "quick and dirty" I see no problem with Copy and Paste, but your success may vary based on OS, and CS versions you are using!  Sometimes it is wiser to take a few shortcuts to hit rather than miss that deadline!

  • Can i copy text from illustrator to indesign and retain attributes

    Hello,
I received an illustrator cs3 file that I need to convert to InDesign cs3.
Is there a way to copy the type that is set in illustrator to indesign, while retaining the attributes. I need to be able to make changes on the type in indesign, so converting type to outlines isn't an option.
    Thanks!
    T

Even though you can change your InDesign preferences for Clipboard Handling to allow formatted information to be pasted into InDesign from other programs, unfortunately Illustrator still won't allow you paste in text with formatting. This is due to how Illustrator and InDesign handle text differently. Even if you copy the text from Illustrator and paste it into a program like Word, which has a lot of different ways to handle formatted text, Illustrator just treats text differently than other Adobe applications.

  • IDSCS5.5 How to determine if a pageitem was copy/pasted from Illustrator

    Hi,
    My flow is as follows:
    - Open document in IndesignServer
    - (XML)Tag every pageitem with our custom IndesignServer plugin (c++ SDK)
    - If pageItem is a group, tag every member separately
    - save/close the document
    My problem is:
    - If pageitem was copy/pasted from Illustrator and pageitem has a gradient fill => IndesignServer crashes while tagging.
    - Copy/pasted illustrator items with plain colorfills work fine.
    Note that:
    - Copy pasted pageitems from illustrator with a gradient fill are considerated as group in Indesign.
    - The gradient fill of Illustrator is not recognized as such in Indesign ( I could only test with Illustrator CS4).
    - The lack of color information in that situation is not enough to consider the object as "from Illustrator".
    My question:
    - How can i determine if the origin of the pageitem is Illustrator? (I have no control on the creation of the document).
I know this is a hard one...
Thanks in advance for any usefull input!

  • Desperate for help! indd crashing when copying/pasting from illustrator

i have cs2; updated programs for indesign and illustrator; on my new imac
i have a bunch of small graphics -- logos, and line drawings -- that i need to place into indd.
they have been scanned and traced in illustrator.
i have copied and then pasted them into indd. HOWEVER INDD crashes immediately over and over. i've tried copying and pasting them from ai into indd into blank documents -- once again crash.
I NEED TO GET THIS PROJECT DONE! yikes.
what can i do to prevent crashes???
AND -- big question -- if i save them in ai. and place them into indd -- i have white boxes around each graphic which I DO NOT WANT. that's why i was copying and pasting to begin with.  Are there ways to save graphics and place them into indd without these white boxes around them. I'm open to other formats -- and not embedding -- but need to get rid of the box.
at one point i got a message saying memory was full. now it all just crashes.
please help anyone and everyone. i'll be indebted to you!

ok; i am able to get the objects to show up without the white box when doing this!!!!!
    THANK you for that suggestion!!!!!!
but what about copying and pasting?? isn't that supposed to work between indesign/illustrator????

  • Can't copy from illustrator to indesign?

Alright, first the essentials: I'm using CC for all my software and I'm on OSX (10.7.5).
I am doing some vector outlines of photos that already exist. Many of these photos have clipping paths on them which, when I open them in illustrator, seem to show up as paths. Awesome! I can just drop a stroke on there and save myself a bunch of time.
That works fine in illustrator, but if I then if I try to copy/paste the outlines into InDesign, I get an error that says "Illustrator import failed. Scrap contains no visible objects."
Creating the outlines brand new with the pen tool works fine and copies over as usual, but if I can save myself a few hours and use the existing paths, that would sure be helpful. Hopefully this is just a setting somewhere or something that I'm missing. Any ideas?

You would probably do better to link your Illustrator files into InDesign. It takes a bit longer but on the whole it is a better workflow and if you need to make adjustments you just option double-click on the linked images in InDesign and they open in Illustrator.
Copy-Paste can work sometimes but, as you have discovered, not always.
This applies specially to gradients, which can translate very strangely unless they are expanded inro blends.

  • Copy/paste paragraph returns in Illustrator

Hello. I'm having a problem in Illustrator. I copy and paste text from a pdf into illustrator and each line has a paragraph return. In Indesign, this wouldn't be a problem. I would just find and replace paragraph returns with spaces. But in illustrator, I can't select the return. Is there a reason for this and a way around it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
    Ken

You can only find and replace soft return (they call them forced line breaks) using find and replace. Yet another item requested for many years that the Illustrator upgrade team ignores.
JET wrote a script that replaces hard returns with pipe characters (just change that to a space before applying the script).
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3440474#3440474
Other option is to copy and paste in a text editor. For ingredients copy in for example packaging design, it is worth the hassle to get your copy correct.

  • How to import multiple XML files into one inDesign document without copy/paste ?

I use InDesign CS6, and I have several XML files with the same structure. Only the data are different.
I created  an Indesign layout with some tagged placeholder frames on merge mode, for automated layout.
Today for each XML file I have to create a new InDesign document to import the XML. Everything works fine. Then in order to have all Indesign layouts one after the other into a single Indesign layout, I have to use the copy/paste function.
I mean for example, copy the contents of all documents to the first one. Or add pages of other documents to the first one, then delete spaces between each page.
So my question is the following:
How to repeat this process without copy/paste function, knowing that the
number of XML files could be unknown.
Thank you very much for your answer.

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • Problems doing copy/paste from Flash to Illustrator

This is a problem I've had since Flash 8: when doing a
copy/paste from Flash to Illustrator (on Windows), there's extreme
degradation of the artwork, sometimes to the extent that no actual
art is even copied. All the curves seem to be approximated with
straight line segments, but at some point it just seems to give up
even trying, leaving an unidentifiable blob for most of the object.
As I said, sometimes it doesn't even copy anything at all -- all
that shows up after pasting into Illustrator is an empty group.
The weird thing is that this process worked fine in Flash MX
2004. What could possibly have changed? I was sure with CS3 it
would be fixed, but it wasn't. I haven't tried Illustrator CS4 yet,
but copying from Flash CS4 to Illustrator CS3 produces the same
    problem.
I've seen a few other reports of this problem in other
forums, but I've encountered it on every install of Flash and
Illustrator I've tried (admittedly, all Windows machines, but three
or four different ones, both XP or Vista). Can anyone here confirm
that this problem exists or doesn't exist on their computer? To
test it, create a piece of art with plenty of curves and several
colors in Flash, then copy and paste it into an illustrator
    document.
If this problem is as widespread as my experience seems to
indicate it is, why hasn't it been fixed in two major revisions of
the software? Is Adobe even aware of it? If not, how can I let them
know? I'm getting majorly sick of having to deal with it.
Illustrator used to be a much larger part of my animation process,
but now I can't use it how I really want to because of the bad copy
    and paste functionality.
    -David

    Hi,
The integration between Flash CS3 and Illustrator means you
can copy objects from Illustrator to Flash and i think if you copy
from Flash to illustrator or Photoshop, you would not get a good
    results.
You can solve your problem by exporting your Flash work as
    .AI.
Your idea about the ability to copy from Flash to Illustrator
is a good idea although Illustrator can not read some of the Flash
imported information correctly. But it is still a good enahcement
idea. There is a link where you can add suggestions but I do not
remember it and I am replying using mobile, so my browsing
    capabilities is limited.
I will try to post the link here when I got to my back normal
    connection
    Thanks alot!!

  • InDesign CS6 + Yosemite + Copy/Paste = Missing font

We use ITC Franklin Gothic throughout all of our pieces; it's installed and it's the default font setup. New and existing files have opened without issue until now. I opened an advertisement that needed to be resized, from our shared server and copied the contents. In a new document, I pasted the contents suddenly the font says it's missing. The images retained their links to the packaged folder on the server, the fonts just stopped working. I closed InDesign, then disconnected from the server in case there was some kind of conflict between the local font and the server font override from the packaged fonts folder (packaged from the local font installed, I made the source ad this same way). Loaded the new file, and got the expected missing links dialogue, but unexpectedly the fonts were still missing. I reviewed the missing fonts, and it was the entire family. I opened Suitcase, verified the fonts are active. Still no fonts in InDesign. Okay, disactivated font in Suitcase (maybe it needs an update), installed the font in Fontbook, need to get the ad done and I don't have time for this. Verified font works by opening a different file, making a new document, but as soon as I opened the ad with the missing the fonts, fonts go missing. I then changed the fonts to a different family, and tried changing them back, but the font doesn't even show in the list of fonts. I can't figure out why this particular method of copy and paste breaks the font. I've opened and created other files with this font family active, while this copy/paste file is open at the same time in another tab while it still says "no". The only work around I could use was to copy the entire packaged folder from the server to my desktop and just change the document properties to the size I need, then adjust the artwork to fit.
I'd like to find a resolution as to why copying and pasting broke this font even though the same missing font works fine simultaneously in a different document. Any suggestions/questions/thoughts/solutions would be very welcome.
    System specs:
    27" iMac (Mid-2011) 3.1 GHz i5
    32 GB RAM
    1 GB Video
    10.10.2
    Adobe InDesign CS6 8.1
Update: Looking through the font list, Franklin is being listed as a different font. Though the character palette, the font selected is ITC Franklin Gothic Std Book; the font listed in the Type drop-down menu is Myriad Pro, and once that was deactivated, Helvetica.

i don't see how that could be the case because I originally installed the font, created and packaged the ad, and the font is available for typesetting in a new document while this problematic document is open without being connected to the server.
I upgraded to creative cloud 2014 and this particular document is still a problem. This font issue is limited to this sole document. I'm guessing it has something to do with the copy and pasting. Tomorrow, I'll try replacing the font to something else and then copy/pasting it in the same way if it recreates the same problem with a different font.
