Illustrator Variable Library Issue

I have a file with 20 text fields I want to be dynamic. I gave my text boxes names using a name_name scheme and created text variables with the same names and binded them. I was then able to capture and name the first data set with no problems. I saved out the variable library and when I tried to load it back in I get a invalid variable library. I didn't open or change the .xml in any way. My question is are there limitations on variable names or characters contained within and if so what is not allowed. My variables contain accented characters and characters of different languages.

I don't use accented characters or other languages in the variable names just their content. I found the problem and it was the line breaks that were imported using the capture dataset control. When I turned on show invisibles in my text editor i saw diamond shape line breaks in my content. I replaced these with a to close the first line and start a new one and everthing showed up correctly and the library was now loadable.

Illustrator - Maximum allowed size of variable library xml file loaded from variables palette?

One question I can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere – any idea on what the maximum size xml file one can use when making data driven graphics in Illustrator?
I can successfully batch when I load a single variable library with about 100 datasets at one time but anything much larger than that in the same xml format gives me a “the incoming variable library is invalid” error. Elsewhere on this discussion forum I have seen answers say there is no limit to the size of the XML file. (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/647934). But my experience with Illustrator CS5 says otherwise.
I have thousands I need to create. Any help would be most appreciated.
1. If there is a maximum size either in file size, number of datasets, or number of variables/values, please share what the limit is.
2. I still need to create thousands of the final document I am creating - if the limit is close to 100 and I need to create many thousands - any suggestions on either scripting or other methods to get this done?

yey!! now we know 1,000 is not the limit. Tested wiht 2 variables, 1122 data sets.

Illustrator CS5 crash when loading variable library

Hi,
I've recently upgraded to CS5 from CS3. I have some template files set up that read an XML variable library and load external images and text. These were working fine with CS3. With CS5, as soon as I load a variable and try to view any of my data sets, Illustrator crashes instantly. To be more specific, the XML seems to load fine, and I can drop down the menu to see all my dataset names, but as soon as I select one, it crashes. Any ideas on this?

Try following steps::
1. Update OS to 10.6.4
2. Delete Illustrator Preferences
3. Restart machine

How do I import a localized variable library?

Hi all,
I am setting up illustrations for localization and am running into a problem with loading a modified variable library; for instance, one that has been translated. I getting the message "The incoming variable library is invalid".
I can't seem to find any information on what to do after:
-linking and adding variables and objects in the Variables panel
-taking a snapshot
-saving the variables library file
-copying and translating the variables library file

I know this is an old thread but i had this problem and a Google search brought me here. Carlos, had a post in another thread, that let me FINALLY get my variables to work. In case anyone else searches for the same problem, this might help.
My problem was same as OP: creating an xml in excel and loading into illustrator variables window, i got this error message "The Incoming Variable Library is Invalid"
Pulled my hair out for a weekend and finally saw the thread i linked in the first paragraph and realized that illustrator just doesn't work well with excel xml files. So here's what i did (note: when i say Excel, it can be any excel-type program i believe):
1) In Excel, Row 1, create headers for the columns as 1-word headings ("phonenumber" instead of "phone number"). These are going to be your Variables and need to be unique.
2) In Excel, make sure your first column is full of unique data, these will become your Data Sets. I originally had "Color" set as the first column and there were several "Blue" rows so that kept giving me errors, (if you aren't sure, you can use the conditional formatting button to highlight the duplicate values in excel).
3) Ok, fun part, highlight all the cells copy them (ctrl+C, cmd+c, or right click>Copy)
4) Open this link that Carlos provided in the thread i linked at the top: Conversor Excel(CSV) – XML Illustrator the page is in portugese but you don't need to read it so don't worry if you can't speak portugese.
5) Paste (ctrl+v, cmd+v, right click>paste) the cells you copied from excel into the top box.
6) Highlight the text in the bottom box, copy it, and paste it into Notepad, TextEdit, or whatever your favorite text editor is.
7) Save the file as xml (in notepad you just type .xml at the end of the file name.
8) In Illustrator, click the arrow in the variable window, then click "Load Variable Library"
9) The variables should now show up in the list.
Yay! Now you should be able to work with variables and data sets.

HT1844 Library Issue: I just imported 2 CD's into ITunes. They show up in "Recently Added" and on my other devices via ITunes Match, but NOT in the ITunes software on the computer where I added them.

They show up in the search box, but when I click on the results it just kicks me to ALL my music. I have imported thousands of songs/CD's before and this is a new one.

Something may have gone wrong with the index of the Music playlist. Making another change to the library such as downloading the current iTunes Free Single of the Week, or deleting one track from your library and reimporting it, should fix the problem.
If that doesn't work close iTunes and delete the hidden file sentinel from inside the main iTunes folder, then start iTunes again. It should run a consistency check when it starts up which ought to correct things.

I had a nightmare at one time trying to convert a excel file to a .xml compatible with the variables palette. So we we designed a little program converting a .csv file to .xml based on the template provided by Illustrator. If we get enough requests, we will compile it for different platforms and make it available. Please reply if you will be interested.

I'm looking all over the place for a solution where I can convert an Excel CSV file to an Illustrator variables compatible XML ..

Iphoto6 LIbrary Issue (Not finding photos)

Hello : couple of i photo6 issues
1) I have many photos on my mac book pro from my past powerbook (old libraries) When I launch Iphoto6, it only recognises the latest pics. How do I make iphoto recognise the older pics. They are in my pictures folder, however they are not coming up in iphoto as thumbnails. (I am thinking I may have to create a whole new library which I am happy to do (i.e. drag library folder to desk top, then ask Iphoto to create new library etc. using originals folder) If this is correct can someone please explain the process for doing so. If not, please advise what else I should do. I am not notally sure here..... all tips welcome.
2) Why is there a DATA file and an ORIGINALS file in the library file. Do i need both ?
3) I seem to have many duplicates some are thumbnail size pics from previous imports when I had library issues in 2004. Is there a simple way to get rid of these smaller pics so I only have the originals? Hope this all makes sense.

You mean DATA and ORIGINALS folders? Yes you do need
both. A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the
Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you
have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were
downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that
you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command
- very useful if you don't like the changes you've
made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app
needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: It is strongly advised that you do not
move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto
Library Folder as this can cause the application to
fail and even lead to data loss.
3) I seem to have many duplicates some are

Thanks TD Most Helpful. The photos are all in my pictures folder in the originals folder. I think I need to make a new library and go through and delete the duplicates. It seems i may be in a bit of a mess unfortunately.

Indesign won't install past 42% then says it failed. I downloaded photoshop and illustrator with no issues.

Dededededede I would recommend reviewing your installation log files to determine if the installation or download has failed. If the installation has failed then there will be a specific error within the log which will determine why there was a failure. In the default php.ini is set open_basedir which limits work with php only to few directories (and directories bellow them). There is set /srv/http, /home,/tmp and /usr/share/pear by default.
To allow your vhost you should add /data/www or set empty value.

CS5 Illustrator Pantone+Solid Coated library issue

Hello everyone,
I have a problem with CS5 Pantone+Solid Coated library.
In CS4 this library contained Spot CMYK colors.
In CS5 these colors are Spot LAB and darker.
Does anyone has the same problem?

When I pick some PMS Coated color, in Color Panel last simbol is LAB.
In Color Swatches I can change one by one colors to CMYK mode, but they are the same dark.
The root issue is when I open Panton+Solid Coated menu - the colors are presented in LAB mode and they are darker then usial.
In CS4 this library was presented in CMYK mode and colors were right.
In CS5 these right colors are in Panton Solid to Process menu and if I create new artwork I pick colors from here.
But when I open old file (where colors are Pantone Solid Coated from CS4) they pick the colors from CS5 Panton Colid Coated menu and changed to darker colors.

C library issue

And after this error no matter no matter what we do - compile,revert changes, unistall the library, the same error appears when we intergate workspace and we have to recreate the whole thing from scratch - the repos, environment etc. We are not using shadow repositories and are directly connected to the central repos. Has anyone seen this error before? Is there any issue wuth using C libraries on UDS? Any help would be appreciated...thanks!

I got the same issue, trying to use UDS 5.2 and UDS 5.0 concurrently on my Win2K machine (I was testing upgrading to UDS 5.2). The solution is probably the same for other OSs.

The problem comes with the values for the environment variables FORTE_*, WWW_* and PATH being different for each UDS release runtime. They may reside in any of the following Windows registry folders and are searched in this order.

Log in to each account and set the environment variable PATH appropriately as a User environment variable and not as a System environment variable. Check the value of PATH in the following Windows registry folder.

Then change the four Windows NT Services to start up as the appropriate service account and then recycle the Windows NT Services in order that they will pick up the new local user registry hive that has the appropriate PATH setting.

However, if I set up a script to change the FORTE_ROOT variable to

to start of my PATH variable, the error disappears. Previously I had

run the shortcut. This isn't enough though - you need to include the
install and userlib directories on the PATH.

It sounds like the shadow still thinks it's detached. But the fact
that you can do this through fscript contradicts that.
Can you try attaching the shadow again? It might be a good idea to
get everything checked in, all the shadows attached, then recreate
them again. I've reviewed our list of known issues and we haven't
seen repository corruption in ages.

Creating a Variable Library XML "Database"

So, I have been playing with the variable data options and have a couple of questions (in an attempt to wrap my head around the problem):
- Is it possible to output an 'XML dataset' from a database program (such as FileMaker) and have it be 'correct' for AI?
- How would you go about creating an AI correct XML dataset from a spreadsheet application such as Excel, or Numbers?
Up to now, I have been doing all my merges in InDesign (csv is much simpler to grok) and then opening the finished PDFs in AI.

FileMaker (and Excel) can export XML. But using XML to exchange data is not a simple matter of two programs understanding a file format. As I understand it in a nutshell...
The purpose of XML is to facilitate exchange of data (content) independent of presentation (design). XML allows you to "tag" elements with any names you want, rather than being limited to a standard set of tag names. However, this means that the element tags given in one XML document created by program A have to be translated to tags that will be understood by program B. Both programs can parse XML, but they "speak different languages" when it comes to specific element tag names. Something has to map one set of tags to the other.
So working with XML to/from Illustrator necessitates an "in-between" document to "translate" tags to/from Illustrator to/from whatever data program you are using to add raw data. This entails writing DocumentTypeDefinition (DTD) or XML Schema to provide that "in-between translation," because, while Illustrator provides the Variables feature, it does not provide a GUI method for mapping incomming XML tags to its DataSet Variables.
InDesign provides features in its GUI by which to map incomming XML element tags to InDesign's Styles. So you can have some success with XML from FileMaker to InDesign without getting into all the esoterica of XML. But not in Illustrator.
So there does not exist a "one-size-fits-all" in-between document or program which which will work for all your AI documents which use the Variables feature, because Variables can be named anything you want, and each can be of four different types. (Or rather, one such program does exist: Illustrator's own Variables palette itself. That is, you can manually enter new Variable values on the page, and capture the DataSets as you go--which I'm sure is the way the vast majority of AI users employ this feature, if they use it at all.
You could in fact set up an AI document that uses Variables, export the XML Library file, carefully dissect its structure and tags, and then create in FileMaker Pro a solution that would let you add additional "DataSets" and/or Variable values, and export a text file which the AI document would understand as a DataSet Library. But you would have to do this for every AI file you want to use this way, unless you also built a FileMaker Pro script to process the DataSet Library into something that can be manipulated as fields/records.
Your using CSV (comma separated values) in InDesign is quite another thing. Comma- and Tab-delimited text are age-old (and still universally-useful) simple data-exchange text conventions. A tab character in tab-delimited text (or comma in CSV) indicates a jump to the next column (field); a return character indicates a jump to the next row (record)--all in sequential order. They serve just fine as the basis for "mail merge" types of features in everything from Word to FileMaker Pro to InDesign. It would be just as useful in Illustrator, but Illustrator does not provide for a simple, straightforward tab-delimited merge feature.
XML is different from that. It's not like columns and rows. It has to accommodate any arbitrary number of elements arranged and/or nested in any sequential order, just as an HTML document may have any number of paragraph tags between its <body> tags, and any number of bold, italic, etc., tags may be nested between any of those paragraph tags. But in HTML, the naming of the tags is standardized. In XML, it isn't (because that's the whole idea).
Back to Illustrator, though, the shame of it is this: I dare say that the way most users would use the Variables feature could work just as well if it were based on ordinary tab-delimited data. After all, each AI document which uses the Variables feature has a fixed number of bound objects (think of these as fields). Each of those "fields" contains either a text string, a boolean decision (visibility), or a file path (linked object). And they're not nested. So that easily corresponds to ordinary rows and columns. The only Variable type left out is Graph Data (which by definition is rows/columns), but seriously; how many times have you wanted to use the Variables feature for exchanging Graph data anyway?

Variable library xml file size

I'm working with a simple illustrator (CS4) image that has four variables that are being read in from an xml file. Currently I'm pulling in files that are 278kb (~100 data sets), with no issue. But I'm working with a developer to generate larger batch files of these, and I'm curious about size limitations.
Is there a spec somewhere that talks about how large our xml files can be?
Anyone have experience with this sort of functionality?
[I also am aware that this is probably something that I should just script instead of loading it into illustrator, but that's a project for another day. ]

XML size has no limit, i don't think there is a spec for what is a permissible XML size which can be imported. If you talk about a very large xml, a 5-10 MB xml, buddy ur inviting a rattlesnake to bite you on ur forehead, such large xml's i have even seen having problems opening in notepad itself, better be on the safer side 'n' not overloading ur xml.

PKCS#11 library issue on Java 5

I'm facing problem with PKCS#11 library name using SunPKCS11 in Java 5. My sample program runs successfully either providing only PKCS#11 library name or providing library name with absolute path in Java6.

Platform is windows XP. The above program fails with Java5 with following error:
java.security.ProviderException: Library gclib.dll does not exist
at sun.security.pkcs11.SunPKCS11.<init>(SunPKCS11.java:109)

gclib.dll is in PATH i.e. WINDOWS/System32/
But the above program works fine on Java5 if i specify the full path for gclib.dll. Please tell me how should i get rid of this problem. I don't wana specify full path for library.

It sounds like we are hitting the same issue.
I actually had success using the 32-bit library found here: /opt/nfast/toolkits/pkcs11/libcknfast.sl.
As you mentioned, the 64-bit library is found here: /opt/nfast/toolkits/pkcs11/libcknfast-64.so
Unfortunately, the system I was working on is in a customer test lab, so I don't have access at the moment. A few other things that I was going to try were:
1. Renaming the 64-bit library to either libcknfast.sl or libcknfast.so. Maybe Oracle makes assumption about the filename of the library?
2. Setting the environment variable LIBPATH=<directory containing library> (either in /opt/oracle/extapi/64/hsm/ncipher/1.58.42/ or /opt/nfast/toolkits/pkcs11/) and verify by running “su - <user>” where <user> is the name of the Oracle process.
3. Sifting through Oracle Configuration files to make sure that the path to the library hadn't somehow been altered to be incorrect.
Perhaps you can try these and report back? I can't access my problem system without going on-site, unfortunately.
Also, do you have the ability to log a Service Request @ https://metalink.oracle.com? I am negotiating to purchase this ability, but cannot at the moment.
