Illustrator won't let me save any files

I have tried everything I know how, but Illustrator will not let me save any of my files on it in any format, how do I fix this?

calliet,
It may be time for the list (you may skip 5) in this case).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • I recently bought an external hard drive and plugged it into my Macbook Air and it won't let me save any files onto it, how do I fix this?

    Please help me!

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Firefox 4 won't let me save any image off the internet (works fine with IE)

Ok...Firefox 4 won't let me save any image off the internet. It will let me right click on the image, but I won't let me choose a file type..like jpeg.
I couldn't figure it out so i completely uninstalled firefox then reinstalled. I'm still having the same problems.
I can save images normally with IE.

  • Admin permissions won't let me save photoshop files

I moved my MacBook Pro to my son and made him administrator. That worked fine, but now something must have happened because he now can't save Photoshop files anymore as photoshop says he doesn't have permissions. He's running Snow Leopard as he has to use Canvas X, which won't run in Lion. Anyone have an idea what may be screwing up permissions? He did run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility. He is listed as the administrator in Accounts. He also made sure the file Get Info permissions allowed the Admin. He even changed the Get Info permissions to enable everyone.

He's just trying to save a tiff file from PhotoShop back over the original tiff on the Mac's internal hard drive.
He changed the permissions to allow everyone access on the original tiff that he had Opened in PhotoShop.
A little more history: He had an unrecoverable hard drive crash about 2 months ago. So we installed the backup drive that had a SuperDuper copy of the crashed drive that was about 3 weeks old (from the crashed drive's data).
This drive worked fine until this week when the clock reset to 2000. That's the same time the permissions problems started.
I had earlier made him the administrator, but now he had to login with my password and I was shown as the startup admin. Since I was the original owner and admin, I had placed all my applications in the top level Applications folder of the hard drive, not in my Home Applications folder; and now it appeared that he only had access to Applications in the Home folder as a User instead of Admin, thus explaining why he didn't have access to the applications he needed.
So he reset the PRAM to address the clock and other screwy things.
Now he is shown as the administrator in System Preferences>Accounts, but without the permissions of an administrator.

  • QuickTime Pro won't let me save a file from a website

I have QuickTime Pro 7.0 Normally I can right click a link in Mail and select, "Download linked file" and it will allow me to save an MP3. Not this time. Other times, once actually on a website, I can click on the button on the web based version of QuickTime and save a local copy. However, I can't do that on this website:
    http://survive2thrive.gsradio.net:8080/120309.mp3
    Does anyone know why?
    Thanks!

    Copy the URL.
In Safari open the download window (Cmd-Opt-L)
    Paste.
    OR
Paste the URL in the Addressfield
Option-Return and the file will download.

  • Acrobat 8 Pro won't let me save over files

This is just really bugging me - I work in Indesign CS5 and save file as a pdf. I open pdf too check ok and email to client. Then when I amend my Indesign file and resave over that pdf I get this message everytime:
Cannot save to the file "XXX" You may not have permission or the file may be in use.
And consequently, I have to go into the folder and delete it before I can save. It's not in use, it's definitely closed!
Does anyone else have this problem?

Same here Suzie - on my Mac all I'm doing is creating a simple PDF from ID. When I alter it and export as PDF, saving to the desktop to overwrite the previous version it goes through the motions - then up comes this message.
If Bill is assuming correctly that you're on Windows then its a Mac OSX problem too.
Acrobat is dormant here - only ID open.

  • Photoshop CS3 and illustrator won't let me save

I have photoshop and illistrator cs3 for Windows XP.  Both of the programs were running fine for over 1-2 years, but last week when I try to save something, the save dialog pops up for less than 1/2 a second, disappears and then freezes the program.  I can click on other programs within windows, but then I have to use the task manager to close down photoshop of illustrator.  Anyone know what might be causing this?

Consider trashing/refreshing your preferences (as noted in the FAQs).

  • Can't open or save any files on iMac

I have a early 2008 imac running mountain lion. It has been acting very strange lately. For one thing it won't shut down. I have to use the power button to shut down. I have rund disc warrior several times as well as techtool pro. Now it won't let me save a file from any program! It will open a window, and all I get is a blank window with the spinning gear. Same thing when I try to open a file from within any program. Any ideas?
    thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • IWork bug won't let me save in new folders

Hi I'd like to know why all my iWork apps won't let me save my files in new locations.
Every time I try to save something it only lets me save my file to the page it automatically shows me (my documents).
When I try to make a new folder within my documents to save my files, it tells me that the folder is a read-only location. See picture here:
When I checked the permissions in the info of my documents, or the subfolder I try to make new folder in, it says that anyone who accesses my computer can read and write. See picture here:
Please let me know how I can resolve this because I find it very hassle at this point to organize my files without this feature. I have already restarted the computer, Repaired and verified disk permissions, updated all the software and nothing seems to be working. The only way I can make new folders is by making one through Finder first, placing it in the right location, and saving my files there.
    Thanks

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • CS5 Save for Web won't let me save to Windows volume

I have a Windows Server 2003 volume mounted through Services for Macintosh (AFP, not SMB, I'm pretty sure). Even though both the Mac and the Windows volume can independently handle filenames longer than 31 characters, because of SFM (I'm assuming) I have never been able to save directly out of any application to that Windows volume with a >31 char file name. This has never been a problem as I've kept my file names short.
Having just installed CS5, however, Save for Web isn't letting me save any file, no matter how short the name: "Names longer than 31 characters are not supported on the destination volume." I can Save For Web just fine to my desktop and Save As... to the Windows volume, but not Save for Web to the Windows volume.
The Save for Web is set to "Images Only" (not slices so it's only creating the one file).
    Any thoughts? Known issue?
    thanks.

That might be part of what is going on (and doesn't look a thing like our internal filenames or anything else I recognize).
Probably it's something internal to the save dialog (NavagationServicesSavePanel), and it assumes that filesystems will be able to handle long names.
Again, using SMB to connect to the server may remove part of the restrictions.
CS3/4 was based on Carbon, and used different APIs for much of the file work.
CS5 moved to Cocoa, and has a new set of file APIs to deal with.
