Illustrator won't start

I have for the last three weeks not been able to properly start Illustrator. It gives me the error message [PARM] and the times the program actually manage to open, all the toolbars are replaced with question marks. I searched for it, and it seems like it's because I have changed the language on my computer to a different one from the language that Illustrator use. It made sense to me since I've fairly recentely changed my (Mac) computer
settings from Japanese to Swedish(even though I thought it was a little weird that 1; I've been able to use it for a while with the new settings, and 2; I still to this day have no problem using Photoshop).
Anyway, I started searching around for a solution and found a recommendation to use a program called "Language Switcher" which enables you to freely choose which language you want to open the program in. By using this I manage to open the program and the text had returned. But now the program told me that I'm missing an input; PDF Format aip. I could still open a new file but all the tools had disappeared.
I've tried to update both the computer and the program, as well as un-install and re-install it, thinking I might have messed something up trying to fix the language problem, but it didn't work. And now for some reason, with or without the "Language Switcher", I'm not even able to open the program at all anymore. I also checked some tips from Adobe and installed Suitcase Fusion 5 but it didn't make any difference.
I've run out of ideas and and don't know what to do. If I can avoid it I don't want to change back the settings to Japanese (which was pre-installed by my school without asking me) since it was really hard to navigate, not being my native language. I really need the program for class, and I'm starting to fall way behind! Is there anyone who has had the same problem and know how to fix it? Please help!

What I think that would be the better way to go about this is for you to do an archival reinstall of the system, good thing to do once in a while any way.
BTW removing the fonts won't clear the font cache so if you remove the fonts you clean the font cache out then trash the Settings folder and .plist of course without Illustrator running and for safety sake restart the computer then try to launch Illustrator of course you have to uninstall Suitcase you cannot run Suitcase with Illustrator and you cannot have it installed.
Disabling it means nothing.
Those are your options.
Let me ask you something and do not get offended r you a control person?
If so let someone else handle this for you.

Do you still have suitcase installed? It has to be uninstalled
Hi Wade,
Not sure what you mean by control person but it is my personal computer at home. I only ever use Suitcase to handle my font's, I never add them to the System Fonts or through Fontbook. That said, I removed Suitcase yesterday and I think I got rid of all it's various attachments like prefs, plsts or whatever. At least I hope so. I also removed Office 2004 and Illustrator has been removed with all its attachments, twice. I've also used a program called FontNuke to clear the Font cache.
I thought about reformatting the HD but wanted to see if I could find a solution before putting up the white flag. I agree, formatting is good once in a while.

  • Illustrator won't start, says "updating font menu"

    Hello,
    Illustrator won't start, gets stuck on "updating font menu";
it starts ok from other user accounts but I want to keep my own, customised user account, it will take me a long time to recustomise another. Has someone had the same problem and can someone help me ?
I use Adobe CC, and Mac OS 10.10.1.
    Thanks,
    Clémence

Well, I found my solution myself:
in your user folder, right click, shiw view options, tick show Library folder.
In Library folder, go to Preferences, and trash "Adobe Illustrator 18 settings" folder.
Then Illustrator is again able to start.
Online chat told me that my user account was corrupt and there was nothing to do but create another user account or else ask Apple. I'm quite surprised at the inadequacy of the service I received.
Maybe Adobe customer support team could benefit from a more in-depth training… what do you users think ?
    Hope this helps someone.
Best regards (and a night's work for me to redeem the lost hours).

  • Illustrator won't start after MS Word Update

I believe MS Word is the culprit here but I'm not absolutely for sure. I know I updated Word (Office 2004) the other day. Today I tried to open Illustrator CS2 and it freezes. I trashed my Illustrator application folder and reinstalled but it still doesn't work. Was thinking about uninstalling MS Word but is it enough to just trash the entire Office Application folder or do I need to remove something else as well? Or maybe I'm completely wrong on this.
I also checked and repaired permissions and verified the disc but it was fine.

  • Dot in Open Directory username prohibits Illustrator CS3 from starting up

    Hi
We have a large Open Directory on a MacOS X 10.4 Server. The clients uses OD and Network Home on their Computers.
We used CS2 whit out any problems. But now we have upgraded to CS3. The problem is that Illustrator won´t start up. I have isolated the problem to the dot we use in the shortname on the OD-users. Testusers whit out the dot works fine, and local users whit a dot works!..
So, OD users whit dot is the problem...
Anyone got a workaround for this?
It´s to many users to change the shortname. And the OD is used by our mailserver to, so changing shortname is not an option.. :(

Sounds like a question that might do better being explored in a forum that focuses on O.D., rather than one which is about Illustrator.
    Just a thought...

Adobe Illustrator CC won't start. It immediately crashes. Already uninstalled Wacom software, but that's not the problem, still doesn't start. I'm using the trial version of CC to see if everything works before i buy the software. I also have CS6 Design & Web premium installed, never had problems with this software. Someone knows how to fix?
    Thanks in advance!

Well it's great news that it works in a test user account. Do you use a font manager such as Suitcase or Font Explorer? If so, try turning that off, and see if it works, or at least removing the plugin from the Illustrator plugins. It might be trying to open/activate a font that was added from an external volume. If that's the case, you'll need to identify and remove those items from the library. If you aren't using a font manager, look for some other reason that Illustrator might be trying to open a file from somewhere it can't. Other plugins, or other corrupt preference files.

  • After Effects CS5 Won't Start on Mac OSX 10.6.3

Production Premium arrived yesterday, and having tried all the software, After Effects is the only one that won't start.
I'm pretty sure my computer meets the spec needed.
I have Intel Core 2 Duo processor, at 2.66 GHz, with 4GB of RAM and loads of hard drive space. Premier Pro works fine, it's just After Effects.
    Help!

I am having similar problems to those described above. I have Master Collection CS5.5 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8. The full suite had been running fine until late October, at which point After Effects stopped loading on launch. Illustrator and Photoshop start and run without problems, but After Effects will/would not launch. It hangs while loading MediaCore. When I launch in safe mode, I get an error with the Verdana font, so I've addressed that problem as suggested above (see my notes below). I successfully launched After Effects one time last week before uninstalling the Master Collection and taking all the steps outlined below, but the software has since refused to launch at all. I have not made any major system changes in the past two months. The most recent change I've made that might be relevant is the installation of FinalCut Pro, but the two packages have coexisted without incident since summer. I regularly use VLC, Quicktime Pro 10 and Quicktime Pro 7, but I have not made any changes to these recently.
Here are the steps I have taken:
    delete user preferences
    remove VLC and Quicktime
run software updates on Mac OS; my last update was a Java patch in late October; roughly coincides with when my troubles began. There are no ATI/Radeon patches available for Mac OS 10.6 that I can find, and I believe that the system's "Software Updates" provides such updates
completely uninstall and reinstall Master Collection and install software updates using "Updates" within Photoshop (have done this sequence three times)
    remove font list ("AdobeFnt11.1.lst" and "AdobeFnt11.lst") in /Library/Applicatio support/Adobe/PDFL/9.0/fonts
use Appzapper to remove After Effects before reinstalling it
boot in safe mode and launch either from .app file or from Package Contents/MacOS/ terminal executable
remove MediaCore components completely by placing them on the desktop
Please help. I can not afford to lose production time on this machine.

  • Beige won't start at all

Got to the root of the USB problem -- not the card at all. The computer was not communicating with the printer, or any printer for that matter. So I decided to re-install OS 10.3. The installation was near complete from disc 1 when the screen went to black. When re-starting now the Apple logo comes up and the timing wheel spins then the screen goes black and the old Apple CRT shows on and standby status at the same time. Trying to boot in OS 9.2 gets the happy Apple face on the screen but that's as far as it gets. It won't boot from the install disc -- goes through the startup process (Apple logo and spinning wheel), then the screen goes to black. Won't start from Disk Warrior -- when I hold the "C" key down it starts in OS 9.2 and stalls with the happy face. Won't go anywhere when starting with the "X" key held down. Seems none of the startup options will work.
    I need some help!
    Thanks!

The Beige G3s and older CRTs have an older Analog "Macintosh Video" style of 15 pin connector with only two rows of pins. The pins need to be shuffled about so that they line up with the VGA connector pins, and then the analog signals are compatible.
The G4 Quicksilver's original Video card has an ADC port, as well as a VGA port, but with most cards you can only use one or the other. You will want to use the VGA output directly, but the connectors will not plug together. Apple recommends you use a 922-3764 Adapter to make the connection. See the table in this article:
HT1825- Power Mac G4: Display Compatibility
This article will show a picture of the suggested adapter. The Apple Adapter will definitely work. Most other adapters generally available for sale are for the opposite problem -- connecting an older Apple Computer with a VGA display. So you need to shop carefully, as the sex of the connectors may be backward from what you need.
