Illy CS4 crop question

I used to easily be able to set the dimensions from document setup when i was working on a project, I cant do that now - but whats more frustrating is the crop area tool is gone - can anyone tell me how to only crop 1 item in a document so when I save as jpg - only 1 design shows instead of all on the board

i used this tool however when i use it and size the board down and do save for web, it still shows everythign on my screen

  • CS4 cropping question

    Hello, I'm new here.
I just got Photoshop CS4 (Design Suite Standard) last week after having used Elements (2, then 3) for the last five years.
In Elements, when you use the crop tool, you can move the entire frame around by clicking on the dot in the center and moving it.
It seems that in CS4, when I attempt to move the frame, only the center dot moves without moving the frame lines.  I looked through the PDF manual, but couldn't find any explanation how to change this.
Thanks in advance for your assistance ... I'll likely be back with more questions as I try to learn how to use CS4.
    Ron

    Thanks Zeno!  That's the answer.
Just goes to prove ... you may never be too old to learn new tricks ... it just takes longer.

  • Illustrator CS4 crops my artwork when exporting to png

Illustrator CS4 crops my artwork when exporting to png (it always crops on the right side). It doesn't happen everytime but often enough to be annoying. Sometimes centering my artwork in the artboard solves the problem but not always. Do you have any idea why it's happening, and what I can do to avoid that problem?
    (See the attached png)

@Jacob & Mylenium: I don't have any stroked path in my artwork. I've tried to add a no fill/no stroke rectangle (same size as my artwork and then a bit bigger) but it didn't work.
Your advices gave me an idea though: I've added a filled rectangle slightly bigger than my artwork, centered it and dropped its opacity to 0%, it worked.
I'm glad I know that trick now, because even when my artwork wasn't badly cropped, it was touching the edges of the picture (png). Then I had to open it in Photoshop and increase the canvas size in order to leave some transparent space between the artwork and the edges of the picture. Now I can do that in Illustrator
Thanks a lot for your help !

  • PP CS4 Crop Effect clarification

    PP CS4 Crop Effect Help
    Crop effect
The Crop effect trims rows of pixels from the edges of a clip and automatically resizes the trimmed clip to its original dimensions. Use the slider controls to crop each edge of the clip separately. You can crop by pixels or image percentage.
    Two Problems:
After the crop the trimmed clip is not resized to it's original dimensions.
No way I can find to switch the controls to pixels.
    Thanks.

There is a zoom option check box that will automatically resize the cropped clip to the full dimensions of the sequence. I dont remember that option available in previous versions and I know I never used if it was.
I can see where this option might be useful especially with a higher resolution still by making an easy way to scale up from somewhere other than the center of the frame instead of needing to combine scale and motion keyfranes. It would be kind of like moving the anchor point in After Effects and then scaling.

  • CS4 crop in Adobe Media Encoder

    Hi,
First question is there no forum for the Adobe Media Encoder
that ships with CS4 FlashPro (master collection)?
this seemed the best place possibly
I have a video in quicktime format. Quicktime player says it
    is 720x480.
When I play it in Quicktime it has black bars top and bottom.
When I look at it in Media encoder it has black bars top and
    bottom.
I turned on crop in the input window, and adjusted to remove
    the black bars.
I set output to change output size. It said output 720x350.
    makes sense.
the rest of the settings are f4v same as source default.
When I view the output window in media encoder it appears to
have black bars on the sides?
when I load the video into a video player in flash with
scalemode set on noScale it has black bars on the sides, top and
    bottom black bars are gone.
what's the deal, I just want it the same size with the black
bars gone from the top and bottom, why do I have side bars now??
    thanks
    mark

    Hi Mark,
I tried the following steps and it worked for me, can you
also try out the same at your end?
    1. Import file in AME, choose FLV | F4V format and click
preset link to launch settings UI
    2. Choose preset F4V Same As Source
    3. In Source Preview, Click Crop icon and drag crop rectangle
to crop out the black portion (top, bottom bars)
    4. In Output Preview, change Crop Setting to 'Change Output
Size'. This should remove the black portion from the encoded video.
This however, will reduce your output video size also (so that
    there is no squishing).
    Thanks

  • Marquee selection in CS4 "crops" to image edges. How to reset?

In CS3, when you make a large selection using the circular marquee (ie: alt-drag until the selection grows past the image edges), it maintains the full selection.  But in CS4, it crops to the edges of the image.  Is there an option to fix this so marquees behave like they did in CS3?
See the image below for an example of what I mean:

    the_wine_snob wrote:
Thank you for the report. Now, did the Layer (Selected and active), have pixels beyond the borders of the image?
To answer the question, yes. But... drawing a marquee and then dragging it out works irrespective of layer content.
    Just checked again:
1/ In CS3, drawing marquee, irrespective of content, retains the circular shape even if exceeding the canvas.
2/ In CS4, irrespective of content, marquee crops to the two sides of the canvas with the circular shape that was inside.
3/ In both CS3 and CS4 you can draw a marquee within the canvas and then drag it out
    Maybe there's a setting in CS4????
PS - I just cannot imagine any Selection encompassing any area, where no pixels can be selected, as there are none.
Hunt... that doesn't make sense... of course you can draw a marquee / selection without content... It's the copying / cutting /etc. that will be affected...
PS: For some strange reason, i see you're back to 'the_wine_snob'!!  At least in the message quote!

  • CS2, CS3 & CS4 upgrade questions

Is it possible to have both CS2 and CS3 installed and functional on the same Windows machine at the same time? Same question with CS3 and CS4 and, if it can be done, are there any known issues that result?
I need to migrate our graphics station to the newer CS3 (and eventually CS4 ... probably around the time CS10 is released), but I can't afford to lose access to projects during the much slower than normal process of getting the newer version fully ready to go (i.e., all plugins and the many custom files they use within my projects accessible by the newer version). Sorry for the 101 question ... I work in corporate video now and our facilities are way behind the curve so I have now become that way too.

As Navarro said: Should be no problem. Be aware, though, that several of the "Edit original" and "Open in Bridge" type functions will always resort to the most modern version and these functions thus will not work fully in older versions. If e.g. you chose to "Browse Presets" in AE CS3 with CS4 already on your system, it would open Bridge CS4 and you would be able to view the presets, but could not apply them with a double-click as you would otherwise. Also expect some confusion when working with MPEG stuff. You may get warnings about missing CoDecs in Encore and Premiere or weird licensing warnings ("not included in trial version" and such...)

  • Photoshop CS4 CPU Question...

    Hello,
I hope everyone had happy and safe holidays. Welcome to 2009.
I have a friend with a Pentium 4 system and she wants to run Photoshop CS4
Extended on it. Right now it only has 1GB of ram and while she plans to buy
a new system later this year, she would like to use the one she has now. She
can install another 1GB of ram, however the system requirements for PSCS4E
only states a 2GHz or faster processor. It doesn't state a minium specific
    kind of processor.
So my question is will Photoshop CS4 Extended run on a fast Pentium 4
machine with 2GB of RAM, Windows XP Pro?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Bob, the problem is without knowing if it will install and run she doesn't
want to spend the money on the ram. Since Adobe doesn't state with the
requirements anything more than "2GHz or faster processor" and since a
friend of mine wasn't able to install until he added 2GB of ram to his
system we both want to make sure that it will install on a P4. Once we know
that she can then decide if she wants to spend the money on the extra ram.
If it won't install on a P4 (the installer like with the less than 2GB of
RAM won't let it) then buying the extra ram is moot and would be a waste of
    money.

  • Photoshop CS4 Crop Tool in Option field

Is there a bug using the crop tool in Photoshop CS4 (11.02) and enter values in the fields in the Option field.
Enter values for Width, Height and Resolution is OK, but if i go back to change the value in one of the fields, everything in all fields disappears if i press delete standing in on of the fields.
This must be a bug in CS4.
Do anyone knowing anything about this?

I'm going to go out on a limb and make some guesses as to what happened:
Some time during the development of CS4, someone likely got the idea that the [Clear] button and the Delete key should be the same thing, to save some time for the people who are keyboard oriented and want to quickly clear out all the fields.  And so they redesigned the UI slightly to do that.
Then people like you, after actually using CS4, complained that they didn't like the Delete clearing all the fields, and Adobe told the engineers then working on CS5 to rethink that design yet again.  But they never considered releasing it as an update for CS4 because it was actually behaving as designed.  This avoided the risk that a change might break something unexpected also.
Companies are typically very resistant to do application redesign then release the change as an update.  That's just not how the software world works.  Mostly the updates are just for bug fixes, and only the most severe.  The latest example of this is Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  You wouldn't know it was any different whatsoever from the pre-SP1 software, even though there were clear design flaws in the user interface.
And of course they want you to have that all-important incentive to buy the next new version when it comes out.  I'm sure they even responded, "thank you for helping us to make our product better."

  • Odd number (pixel) artboard (CS4) crop issue

I have been doing some tests and this is a rather odd issue I seem to be getting and I can't believe this is an Adobe oversight as it's a bit major and must be something I am missing.
I am going to explain exactly what I am doing to simulate this simple test, although please be aware this is appearing in my normal work flow and causing me some headaches.
    I create a new RGB 72dpi 1000x1000 pixel artboard.
I draw a blue box 1000x10 pixels exactly at the top of the artboard.
I then export for web (ctrl+alt+shift+s) and select "crop to artboard" and have it set to 100% quality jpeg.
What I have is a big white box with a blue box going from left to right across the top. All is as expected.
Now I drop back to the artboard, select the artboard tool and click on the blue box, this creates a secondry artboard exactly to the dimensions of the blue box.
Again export to web and this time I have just the blue box being displayed. No problems at all.
Right now back to illustrator and I delete my second artboard and increase the size of the blue box to 1000x11 px.
I move the box down half a pixel so it's again back on the top of the box.
I now select the artboard tool and click on the blue box again, I notice that the artboard dimensions and position again exactly matches the blue box.
I click export for web again and again only the blue box is selected, BUT this time I have a 50% (seemingly) transparant pixel line on the top of the blue box, which in JPEG mode makes a light blue line. If I switch to transparant PNG instead of JPEG I have a semi transparant blue line at the top.
If I switch back to the artboard and move the blue box down 0.5 of a pixel and then move the artboard as well it's fine. The artboards although seperate from each other seem to still be taking what is in them relative to everything else. In CS3 if you drew a crop box around an object, no matter where it was on the screen ("artboard") as long as it was in full pixels (as in not 0.5 etc) you didn't get this problem.
Now let me explain why this is a real pain in my work flow: I design websites in Illy. It's effectivly the tool I use to bring all my elements together, I use PS for advanced image editing, Word for writing my text etc and Illy for putting the pages together, formatting the text, creating the graphics etc. Now all this worked fine in CS3 because I could have something 11px high and have it start on a full pixel (as it works in HTML) and just create a crop box for it when I was exporting. It all worked wonderfully. So what I want to know is am I missing some option in Illy that makes it as good as it was? I love the idea of the artboards but this cropping issue seems like a step backwards and is giving me substandard output like I used to get from ImageReady years ago. If I draw a crisp edge, that is what I want comming out the other end.
    Hope someone can help.
    Regards
    Paul

I am going to reply o this if you make a circle and you make an artboard for that page and save it for the web you will crop half a pixel off the bottom and right sides if you increase the art board by a little over one third pixel all will be fine you get the whole circle.
This was happening to you as well but since it was a rectangle you did not notice it, Now to the problem you mention I would say it was related and that why you don't see it until you move it down is related to the problem that is happening at he bottom and you only see it when it is brought into view as you did.
So what can be done about it?
Adjust it manually make notes of the adjustment and write a script to adjust any artwork to accommodate the discrepancy.
As to you disbelief that Adobe would allow this to get by I am with you we all are hence the reason no one else answered we accept this and wait for a fix and by then we will probably never even notice that the save for the web is fixed.
Everyone will be back on this thread with "Hey when they did they fixed this? Huh?
But until then Happy Trails To Us.

  • After Effects CS4 Exporting Question

I am creating several After Effects CS4 compositions that will be used in a Premier Pro CS4 project. Right now I am importing the AE compositions into Premiere with out exporting them first. It is real convenient to be able to click into PP and see the current changes take effect. My question is this, once I am done tweaking a composition should I be exporting it in another format or I is it ok to use the AE file as is? Am I suffering any quality loss by not going to quicktime or one of the other choices?
And in PP you hit enter to render. Is the AE equivalant hitting the space bar and playing the timeline? I see the green line above any changes but I didn't know if there is another step to maximize the quality of the finished product.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    R-Cole wrote:

If you suffered any quality loss, you'd know your settings are wrong. Most commonly people make a mess of field order, which of course you can neatly avoid by using DynamicLink such as you already do. The rest is more or less a matter of personal preference and how much performance is consumed by live rendering the AE compositions vs. how much juice your machine has. You wouldn't use that workflow on very complex projects where rendering a single frame can take up to several minutes, but for straight titles and color corrections it's okay.
    R-Cole wrote:

The green line refers to frames stored in RAM, the blue ones to the disk cache, should you use it. Read the help files on how to generate RAM previews to populate both caches. After you have RAM-previewed each segement of the timeline and use the disk cache, it may be possible to get realtime spacebar playback, but there is no guarantee for that. After all, AE is primarily foicused on compositing, not RT editing. There's one caveat, however. The disk cache will only be used, if AE thinks it could not render the frames quick enough, so in your simple scenario it may never be used. And of course specific chnages will invalidate caches, so you's have to re-render. It really depends.

  • PDF cropping question

I posted this question in the Illustrator Forum too, but thought it might be worthwile to see if anyone here had any ideas. I have a few hundred PDF files that I created in Illustrator. The Illustrator document size on all of these is 8.5 x 11, but on each file I created a smaller crop area to the artwork. These files crop to the crop area on their image previews and when I open them in Acrobat, but for some reason, they are coming in at the full document size for the programmers that are working with them. I need a way to either automatically reset the Illustrator document size to the crop area, or possibly to process it in Acrobat and remove the document size. I don't want to run it through Photoshop, because we want to keep the vector data, and our tests worked better with Illustrator PDFs then Photoshop.

The problem is not the files, Acrobat, nor Illustrator. The crop used is a non-destructive crop. The entire pdf exists. Your programmers must learn how to determine the crop box and use that information.

  • CS4 Dreamweaver Question: "Find all" has stopped working.

Dreamweaver will no longer perform a search using the "Find All" option. Nor will it place results in the Search panel.
Can you help in answering the question of how to make it work again?
    Dreamweaver will . . .
Find Next within the current document.
Find Next within a specified folder.  And, with repeated mouse clicks will find each instance within the defined set of pages.
    It will NOT . . .
Find All within the current document.
Find All within the defined set of pages (e.g. folder, site, etc.)
The Search Panel at the bottom of the page will appear when the Find All search starts, but nothing populates in it.
Your help in answering this question is most appreciated.

It worked a couple of times, but no longer. Any other thoughts?
If you have experienced it several times and using latest updates for CS4 this means there must be more going on.
Do you check and repair your disk permissions for OSX on a regular base and do you have also latest updates for OSX (software update) running regularly?
There are two other options, purge cache for folder (or delete the entire cache file to the trash and start again caching). In the Bridge prefs is a setting to also purge global cache. (Per CS4 it seems save to use this setting, earlier version could bring you in trouble as Tai Lao often has stated)
You will find the cache file in the user library caches folder and it can grow to huge proportions.
In the same library in the preferences is also a  Bridge plist file that can be deleted.
Both Cache and plist file will refresh itself with a default empty file as after first install once you restarted Bridge.

  • CS4 Upgrade Questions

    Hello,
My Dad currently has a version of CS3 witch he hardly uses. I'm wanting too upgrade that too CS4 but I have a few questions.
Firstly when I get the CS4 upgrade disk can I just put it straight into my Mac and install it, all Photoshop will ask of me is the serial number too CS3 too check I am eligible too upgrade correct? That's all the Adobe website is saying I will need. (The current CS3 we have is also a Mac version)
Also can I go on to then register CS4 too myself? Have it as my product with my contact details and email address etc? Or will I not get asked that during installation? Will it automatically register it too the owner of the CS3 serial(my dad?).
And would I be correct in thinking that CS3 serial could not be used again in the future too upgrade from but could still be installed on 2 machine's?
Many thanks for any help in advance.
    Ben

You are entitled to one upgrade.
When I installed CS3, I was asked for my previous serial number, which is on the box or in the documentation of the older product.
Were I you, I'm not sure I'd upgrade to CS4 though. There are lots of reports of it having major issues with both Leopard and Snow Leopard. I am sticking with CS3 for now.
CS4 lets you paint directly on 3D models, wrap 2D images around 3D shapes, convert gradient maps to 3D objects, add depth to layers and text, get print-quality output with the new ray-tracing rendering engine, and enjoy exporting to supported common 3D formats; the new Adjustment and Mask Panels. It's a 64-bit application in Windows Vista and not OS X.
Adobe's Facebook page suggests that CS5 will come out this year and they're working to improve the application. I'd like to see a 64-bit Mac application that doesn't crash like CS4 is said to do on Snow Leopard.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 Functionality Questions

    Hey everyone,
I've been thrown onto a Project which is using Premiere Pro CS4 (we have been using Roxio VideoWave), and have some basic questions I'm hoping someone can answer (I'm no expert in the video editing software field):
    1) in Video Wave, I can easily add photos and movies to a project just by dragging and dropping from Windows explorer. In Premiere, it seems the only way I can add photos and videos to a project is to import the media, and then drag them from the "project library" to the timeline. Is there a way to drag and drop a photo directly from Windows Explorer into a Timeline? If so, please tell me what basic step I'm missing. :-)
    2) Is there any way to preview what a transition will look like before actually adding the transition to the movie?
    3) When I add a video/photo from the project library, I have to hold the CTRL key to have it to a "ripple" insert (eg, push everything else in the timeframe out). Also, I have to hold the CTRL key to do a "ripple trim". Is there any way to set these actions as the default so I don't have to hold the CTRL key down for these?
    4) Lastly (for now :-) ), in Roxio Videowave I could easily edit the volume of a sound clip in the timeline just by clicking on the middle line going through the sound wave and dragging it up or down. I can't seem to figure out if there's a similar easy way to do it in Premiere Pro.
Any help appreciated! Again, sorry if these are basic stupid questions, but Premiere is currently way above my level of experience.
    Thanks! :-)

    1) Is there a way to drag and drop a photo directly from Windows Explorer into a Timeline?
In Premiere, no, there is not--at least not from Explorer itself. You need to import the files first (you can drag and drop them into the Project panel/bin), and then edit them into a sequence. However, you might try out the Media Browser; go to Window > Media Browser if you don't see it. Media Browser will give you an Explorer-like interface that you can use to drag files directly from the folder structure on your hard drive into a sequence; when you do so, they will simultaneously be imported into the project.
    2) Is there any way to preview what a transition will look like before actually adding the transition to the movie?
Nope; you just have to try them until you find one you like. Then memorize it
    3) When I add a video/photo from the project library, I have to hold the CTRL key to have it to a "ripple" insert (eg, push everything else in the timeframe out). Also, I have to hold the CTRL key to do a "ripple trim". Is there any way to set these actions as the default so I don't have to hold the CTRL key down for these?
Nope; those are hard-wired. It'll become automatic for you after awhile.
You probably don't have the volume or keyframe adjustments enabled for your track. Check the following screenshot:
You can select either "Show clip Keyframes" (which lets you keyframe other effects via the dropdown on the clip) or "Show Clip Volume" which shows just the volume effect. A yellow line will appear across the waveform; you can drag it up and down to adjust the total volume of a clip, or use the Control/Command key and click on the rubberband to add keyframes/nodes so that you can ramp the audio. You can also Control/Command click on a keyframe again to make it sprout handles so that you ease in or ease out the level. Note that you can also select the "Track" options, but that (as the name implies) adjust the level for the whole track and not individual clips.
