Im deigning a new mac infrastructure, any tips on sites of guides?

I hope somebody can offer some advice, but im after some advise or pointers on where to start on the design of our new Mac infrastructure. I would love to get some help in with this, but unfortunately with the way the budgets have worked out, there is no money at present
We are a college thats mostly Windows based with about 140 macs over 2 sites. At the moment all our Windows users are in AD, and our mac users login locally on each machine.
Im trying to decide if its worth using the golden triangle for AD/OD logins, or if its not worth it with the problems. Keeping it simple with a separate mac network would be great as there is less to go wrong, a better end experience with things like the 10.5 wiki and podcast working very nicely, but it would but lots of extra admin and not integrated with the rest of our system and network shares.
What did you decide in this situation? keep it a mac network, or integrate?

John DeTroye's series "Tips and Tricks For Macintosh Management" is pretty good. It was last updated for 10.4.10 but most if not all of the deployment and management information is still relevant and applicable.

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

    HI G.T.Morgan,
Can you please share the error message that you are getting ? Are you transfering the data using Time Machine or any third party Back up tool ? if yes , kindly not use that , as that could cause Adobe Softwares not to work . If you wish to download CS5 , kindly use the following link to download and install it directly on to your new machine .

  • I want to replace one of my older Airport Extremes with the new model.  Any tips?

I have 2 older airport extreems that are connected by a network cable.  They share the same Netrwork ID.
I want to replace one of them with the new model as I want to use the old router on another project.
Any tips out there for a no-issue switch?
Should the newer and faster Extreme be connected  to the Modem or does it nt make a didfference?
    Thanks

use the new router as your primary router with the modem - this will be a factory  install from the default configuration -   as long as you use same network name password and type a password that you used for the express in bridge mode, you should be able to plug it in and have it work like before.  just make sure that you configure everything individually and then power all devices down and repower each one individually starting with the modem then the router in the express and that should work

  • My CS products don't work after migrating them from an old mac to a new mac. Any ideas?

Help! I bought a new imac, and used the migration process to move everything from the old mac to the new mac. But now none of my CS products (eg Indesign) will work. I use CS5.5 and CS6. The CS6 says I can run "a trial version" - which is absurd, given that I have a legitimately bought version on disk (that cost over £1000!). The CS5.5. icon just bounces for a couple of times then closes before fully opening.
Adobe will not help, because they say CS6 is "an old product".
I am desperate - does anyone have any ideas?

Migration does not work with Adobe products. There are too many components in too many places, and they don't get copied properly.
You'll need to use the Adobe Cleaner Tool to remove what you copied:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
Then download a fresh copy of CS6:

  • Going from my 4 to the new 6 today, any tips?

So my new iPhone 6 16 gb space gray is out for delivery, actually mine and also one for my wife, we are both coming from the iPhone 4.
This is the first time I have ever pre-ordered a new iPhone, especially setting the alarm to get up when pre-order started ugh, in order to get one on release day.  But I did it successfully, and today we will have our new devices. And, this will be the first time I have ever gone through activating my new iPhone myself.
So what I have done so far, is a complete backup to the iCloud of each phone. I am assuming that is all I really need to do.
I also understand there is some sort of set up assistant that will walk me through the process of setting up/activating the new phones when I first power them on? I presume this will allow me to restore all my stuff from iCloud, and activate the new phone while de-activating the 4?
Probably dumb questions, but when we got our first iPhones, which was the 4, we just went to the Verizon store and they did everything there for us.
    Thanks for any tips...

I'm very excited for you, dburne! Thanks for reaching out. The good news is you have already taken the most important step in getting your new iPhone 6 up and running: You backed up your personal data. Awesome! And yes, the new device will include activation instructions. And we'll be here to help if you need us. Enjoy!!

move client is to move a floating client in a specific direction.
You can use the swap-client-* options to swap one frame with another.
You can also use detach-client, switch to target frame, attach-client. This is probably the "preferred" method.
    2) Can I save a frame layout so I have it, "empty," next time I start wmi?
Not that I know of. Not like ion... but I find I got used to and preferred having my own dynamic layouts in wmi.
wmii has the concept of 'layouts' so you can arrage a certain number of windows in a specific way, this is sort of like your empty frames plan. Its really really cool, problem is the resizing with tiled layouts.
    3) How to move a client to another workspace?
    detach-client switch workspace attach-client
(alt-d and alt-a are the defaults for deatching and attaching)
    4) How to set a background image?
I use qiv -z in my theme.conf for the rootcmd or whatever it is... you can use esetroot, bsetroot, etc as well.
The FAQ on the wmi homepage seems to be about wmii only ... or I am blind.

  • I need to get a new printer/photo scanner for my new Mac. Any recommendations?

I need a new printer for my Mac. Also want to scan old photos and slides. Any recommendations?

You really need to determine what the priorities are. For example, scanning slides is not something you're going to be able to do with a multifunction printer.
It might be to your benefit to cost out dedicated printers and scanner. Then you don't need to compromise one thing for an other.

  • ITunes Media And Removable Storage Issue - Can't Get iTunes to recognize the new location.  Any tips?

I've had my iTunes media on an external HDD for years.  Let's call this drive B.
My iTunes library and xml file reside on my Mac HDD.
I decided that I wanted to buy a bigger HDD and move all of the media to it.  Last night I copied all of the media files to the new HDD (let's call it P) from B.  I also copied the iTunes folder from my Mac HDD to P and directed iTunes to look for the media in the Advanced settings.
Of course when I launched iTunes after all the hours it took to do all of this copying, it could not find any of the media on P without asking whether I wanted to locate it - and the library was full of explanation points.  When I examined the info on a few songs, it was showing that all of the media was still pointing to B as the location with the complete directory structure pointing to that old location - and not to the new drive.
I tried creating a new library and still could not get the library to recognize that all of the media was now on P instead of B.
I remember when I did something similar years ago, I just changed the location in iTunes in the Advanced settings and iTunes realized that all of the music was on B instead of its prior location.
I finally gave up and restored things back to the original settings with all the media on B.
I did a lot of searches and followed everything explicitly -- which basically meant copying the iTunes folder (with the library and xml files within it), and the media to the new drive and then telling iTunes where the new location was.  To me it shouldn't be any simpler than that to get iTunes to recognize a new location for all the music.
Can anyone offer a more rudimentary breakdown of things for me to try so that I can get iTunes to acknowledge that all the media is on P and not B?
P is larger than B  for those of you who are wondering why I'm trying to get this to work. And P also will be a drive that dedicated to iTunes and media and nothing else.  Unlike B, which has all kinds of assorted files on it along with my music, etc.
And yes, each time I made changes  - I restarted iTunes

Thank you both for the information.
It sounds like I did something out of sequence based upon reading the split library information, thinking I was doing the right thing.
This is exactly what I did
I copied the folder with all the media from B to P
I copied the entire iTunes folder from the Mac HDD to P
I option click started iTunes and connected to the library file and when iTunes opened it was OK - and looked like it normally does when I was still using B as the storage
    I connected to P
When it didn't work, I tried to create a new library and did the same exact things.
    So let me ask this:
Should I hook up P again and delete everything off of it except for the folders that have the media in them and then copy the current iTunes folder over onto P again - and then copy all of the media from it's current location into the iTunes Media folder inside of the iTunes folder I copy over from the Mac and then try to connect and consolidate everything?
I assume that if I move everything from the current media folder into the iTunes/iTunes Media/ that I copy over everything will be under the iTunes umbrella as if things were never split?
I don't seem to recall it being this difficult when I originally set up things on B, as it was a split situation then too, if I'm not mistaken.
I really appreciate the instruction.  And honestly it does make sense to have everything in one location to prevent problems like this from happening  - it would just be great if iTunes had a feature that moved and/or copied the necessary files to the new location to prevent splitting links

  • New BIA project - any tips?

We've purchase a small BIA (4 blades?), and I am requested to put together a project plan for getting it up and running.  Most of the information I can find on the web say it is a plug and play device that can be up and running before dinner (OK, maybe not quite that easy).  I know there is much more to it than that, and was wondering if people who have been through it before can give me some tips or pointers as to how long things will take, and what to look out for.
Specifically, I'm wondering how much work does it take from the various teams (Server, Basis, BW), and how long I should expect.
    Thanks
    Michael

Most of the implementation process will be done by the hardware partner. It is however up to you, the customer, to decide which cubes will be put in the system. Please remember that queries which go against providers such as DSO's or spend much time in OLAP will not be aided by BIA.
Given this I would imagine your business can decide which reports are most critical and need to perform the quickest, so you can work from a top-down approach. For instance, in many cases I've noticed that the cubes behind a CFO's sales dashboard are always indexed
Also if your interested, SAP support actually has a set services to safeguard against any unforseen problems. Contact your CEM (I think they may have a new name now?) and ask about BIA Technicial Feasibility Check. It general it incorporates things such as sizing, query usability and config check.

  • New external HD, any tip?

Hi, I just purchased an external HD and would like to know if there is any good installing and formating tip I should know before install and start using it.

If you plan to share the disk with PC users, you need to format the disk as FAT32 (or at least have a partition which is formatted as FAT32).
Your disk might already have been preformatted. Ususally the manufacturer will include details in their manual.

Have you tried killing the task? Double click your home button, hold your finger down on the icon until you get a red minus sign, then click it to kill the task. Also try turning your wireless off then back on, rebooting it or reset your network settings on it. Let me know if any of this helps!

  • New to G5..Any tips?

    Greetings,
Having had my nose deeply in my TiBook for the last 4 years, I just purchased a used G5 Dual 1.8 off eBay with some AppleCare remaining.
I have been stuck in Panther world, and it is coming with 10.5 installed.
Is there anything specifically (beyond booting) I should do upon receiving it in order to determine its general health?
Any settings to be made as I see there are processor speeds to be negotiated?
FCP is my main app. I don't do gaming...yet.
I intend to hook it up to my Samsung 32" HDTV, which has a DVI port. I mirrored to this occasionally from the PB.
    Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

The three things you'd best do are:
    Backup your data*
Make sure the disk never becomes too full*
    Upgrade when necessary and ready*
    - * Links to my pages may give me compensation.

  • Post upgrade/new Mac, can't open 08 site in iWeb 09 :(

So it's been a while and I'm finally getting back to my web page. In the interim I've got a new Macbook, on Leopard and iWeb 09 now. Trying to open the groundwork I did and of course getting no joy, appears I don't have the .sites2 file. Didn't know I needed it, and while an avid backer-upper I don't have a backup of my previous Mac anymore. The html for the pages I made before loads up in a browser fine, is there any way this can be imported into iWeb 08 or 09? or am I starting from scratch again??
    many thanks

The domain.sites2 file is the holy grail of iWeb. It is the heart and soul of your web site(s) in that it contains all of the relevant files for creating the site. By default it is located in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. It's your responsibility to provide for a backup of it. An external HD and Time Machine is a very good backup solution. Or you could get a flash drive and manually backup that domain file to it after every use of iWeb.
