Im having trouble having iMovie convert to Quicktime

Hey Everyone,
I recently shot and edited a movie on iMovie on my Powerbook G4 (I have iLife). When i tried to convert the movie to a Quicktime file (CD-ROM size). It would convert succesfully until about it began to say "about 10 minutes remaining". It would then freeze and nothing would happen. Can someone please tell me something im doing wrong or something im not doing correctly? thanks alot!
PS I recently bought a new camcorder, a Canon ELURA 100 (its DV).
thanks,
Casey

Sometimes the progress bar when exporting to QuickTime is a bit unreliable, to say the least. It can't be relied on it to show us exactly what's going on.
It's usually the case that when the export appears to "freeze", it hasn't. It's just taking a nap. It sits there, and sits there, and sits there, then suddenly it zooms quickly to the end.
This is especially true when exporting with the H.264 codec, which is the default export codec for iMovie 6. Its export is slower than most other codecs (which isn't all bad, for it does a great job) and its progress bar is even more unreliable than most.
So I'd suggest trying again, and being very patient. Let it run overnight if you need to just to be sure it's had all the time it needs. If the project is long, it can take a long time.
One way to estimate the time is to export a clip that's 30 seconds long. Then based on how long that took, calculate the time for the entire Timeline.
Note too that it'll be a lot slower if iMovie isn't the frontmost application.

  • Having trouble installing iMovie HD on a new Mac with Mavericks

I am having trouble installing iMovie HD on a new Mac with Mavericks.
I know that iMovie HD works with Mavericks because we are using it on other Macs successfully.   However, those machines were upgraded starting with OS 10.6.   In other words, iMovie HD was installed on these Macs when the Macs had Snow Leopard.
When I use the iLife 06 disc, I am presented with “You can't open the application “iLife 06” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I understand that iMovie HD  is universal, not PowerPC.  How can I get past this to install iMovie HD.
    Thanks

    OK, I made some progress.
I used Pacifist (Shareware) to open the iMovie HD 6 install packages from the iLife '06 installer DVD (iMovie.pkg and iMovieThemes_Tiger.pkg) and let Pacifist install them to the right places.
But doesn't iMovie HD 6 require QuickTime 7 to work ?

Hi I am having trouble expiring iMovie projects to YouTube in 720p it works some times but it fails to upload most of the time

A work around is to export from your camera roll.
So export the video to the camera roll.
    Go to Photos app,
and choose export (the arrow pointing out), and choose to go to you tube form there.
It tends to be a little more reliable.
    Hope that helps!
    Also please tell Apple:

They tend not to care about a few things being busted in their equipment, but might fix it if enough people complain.

having problems converting pdf to word. I'm not able to convert the file, what do I need to do?

    Hi prates77,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble converting files. Are you receiving the conversion error regardless of the file that you try to convert? Does the error occur whether you use the web interface, or convert via Reader? And an odd question: how many files do you have stored in your Acrobat.com account? We have seen reports of this error when there are a large number of files stored in the root folder of your Acrobat.com account.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Can the mac mini i7, 8gigs ram,  edit avchd 1920/1080p without having to convert it?

Can the mac mini i7, 8gigs ram,  external FW800 drive, edit avchd 1920/1080p without having to convert it?
Can you scrub the TL at 5x speed and not have it stutter?

By default it converts it to ProRes 422, though you can specify other codecs.
    Why convert it?
Although FCP X can handle AVCHD natively, AVCHD being a "delivery" codec is not really suitable for editing.
ProRes is designed specifically for ease of editing especially with complex effects and colour correction.
If your editing is going to be fairly basic you can get away with leaving your media as AVCHD.
Note also that an hour of ProRes is around 50GB !

I recently purchased QuickTime 7 Pro to convert avi files to mov files for editing on Imovie. However, QuickTime won't play the files. How can I get them to play and how can I convert them to mov files?
Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • Will PSE 11 open RAW D7100 files in ACR without having to convert to DNG?

I have a D7100 and PSE10 -- I learned (after the fact...) that PSE 10 can not open D7100 RAW files. I have tried using the DNG converter but do not want to have to do this. I also purchased Lightroom 5 in ordert to solve the problem, but again (after the fact...) learned that LR5 doesn't work with VISTA, which is that my desktop has.  Getting quite frustrated, I know mostly my fault for not researching enough.... but I really just want to open the D7100 RAW files directly in ACR. Will PSE 11 support D7100 RAW files without having to convert to DNG first?

Suggest you download the trial version using the link below and try it free for 30 days. Also bear in mind that PSE12 is due out soon. So you could run another trial of that product when available, assuming Vista support.
After downloading and installing the trial you will need to update the ACR plug-in to get support for the D7100.
Launch Full Edit (Expert Mode in PSE11) and on the menu click:
    Help >> Updates
Install version 7.4 of ACR and your NEF files should open, with one proviso. Ensure your raw files have not passed through older versions of Nikon Transfer/ Nikon software; only the software that shipped with your camera.

  • Trouble downloading imovie upgrade

i am having trouble downloading imovie upgrade. it seems to be stuck. Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMovie - "Convert Entire Clip" reduced clip's frame rate

    Hi,
I was making a video using iMovie.
I wanted to speed up or slow down some clips, so I clicked the "Convert the Entire Clip" button.
After the clips were converted, I noticed that the frame rate of my clips was reduced. It looked lagging in most part of the clips. The original format of the clips is mp4, iMovie converted them to .mov format
Is there a setting to improve/maintain the frame rate during the conversion?
    Thanks.

Thanks to all who have responded,
I had planned to create short movie clips for emailing but wanted something quick and easy to do so.
It would be great if I could from iMovie select a clip and share to QT then email the results but it seems that each time I will have to ‘work’ on the clip to prepare it for sharing. I don’t want to go to that much trouble each time so I doubt I will use this means.
I don’t understand why it is not easy to do so. Each time I try to open a QT clip in WMP it says it can’t use the file. I had hoped it would convert the movie to MPV or better if QT would convert to something other than files most PC’s won’t open. There are now four PC users that can’t open the file and one that can. 1 out of 5 is not too impressive.
By the way, I don’t know what Sorenson is.
I create numerous iMovies but never use QT even though I keep buying Pro each system upgrade just in case.
Is there a quicker solution to sharing by email?

  • How do I export an imovie as a quicktime small enough to work on iweb well?

I recently tried exporting a imovie into a quicktime choosing web page quality. Once this process was done I opened a iweb movie page and it inserted the quicktime movie in but also included a warning that it will not play well for all computers. It said the best way to have it work is to compress it to 10 MB. I went back and didn't see that option or understand all of the options that might make is smaller. It's about a 1/2 hour school concert. Many thanks for any help!

    Hi Mt514,
If it's 30 minutes, I wouldn't worry about the 10 MB thing, I'm not certain, but I think that would apply to like a 5 minute movie... afterall, it's how big it is per second, not really how big overall!

  • Within CS5 (Dave Karlin) How-Tos: 'simple album' converts to Quicktime

The training book offers foto album w/in flash as a 'simple' (to play as slideshow on devices by converting swf to Quicktime) but only 4 images per pop: I have about 100 images. 'Advanced' has no direction for the same capacity: is the 4 image limitation a QuickTime issue or is it a limitation to the Adobe software? And does the 'advanced foto album' convert to quicktime? Quicktime can be converted to play as h.264 for devices; right now, my swf (4 images: simple converted to swf) flash box doesn't play on IPhs, my roll over to enlarge gallery (swf) doesn't play on Iph: photoshop click thumbnail to enlarge isn't going to work on Iph or other cell ph devices? (not w/out a curser). I would hire a professional editor/consultant but I haven't been able to snag one (despite effort). Another person asked me why not what for? because his webdevel told him "Don't worry about the four images only; we'll fix that later." I've divided my image files into years 1999-2013: that's a lot of individual quicktime movies at only four images per movie file. And how would a slideshow be activated on an Iph (cell phone w/Inet capacity) if there
isn't a curser?! If converting QT to h.264 does it just play all the time? I've got a lot of other videos to attempt converting, so this needs better technical skill than what I know...

Swf files are not editable.Whereas fla files are editable. Think of it this way. FLA files are text files that can be created with notepad, word, etc. A swf file is machine code that requires the flash player to interpret it in a browser or AIR to interpret it as an application.
Flash professional and flash catalyst take the text and compile it as a swf file.
Flash pro can import a swf file though and pass it along during the compile process.
It sounds like you are already getting in way deeper than the process I mentioned. The reason for going the flash route is when you need to add code to allow that amination to do things you can  not do visually. For example adding random blured dots and move them in a random pattern to make it look like snow. Thats a great use of flash as you are letting the computer do the work for you.
But for a simple slide show where you are showing one image after another with maybe a fade in between, flash is a bit of a side step.
What helps with flash is as you have seen people create templates for slides shows using code. That allow others you just add the images and maybe a few features and run the compiler.
The problem then becomes did the person creating that template do a good enough job? Did they have your best interest at heart? Yes, even flash is suseptable to coders that have alterior motives.
As for being afraid of quicktime, why? Apple has been in business for more years than I can remember back in the 80's anyway. Quicktime is on more PC computers than I probably could count. It's definately on all Mac computers. Its required to export any video from photoshop.
I tell you what though, because you have the state of mind of going down the flash route, I recommend that you repost  over on the flash forum(s) As they would have way more answers about flash than you would get here.
I also beleive that Apple has their own forum for anything quicktime related, so that may quench your answers about quicktime.
Good luck and if you have any further questions related to photoshop, feel free to post.

  • FCP 5.0.4 freezes when rendering or converting to quicktime on my macbookpr

FCP 5.0.4 freezes when rendering or converting to quicktime on my intel macbookpro. It really is very bothersome because I can't complete projects without rendering. I recently was just told that we should not download any updates at all for any appliction unless it is absolutely neccessary. Is there any truth to this. Would I be better off doing a complete erase and install to get rid of all updates that I have installed. My mac book is a 2.4 ghz with 2 gigs of ram, 200 gb hd, and 512 of vram. Help! My dead line is approaching.

What you've heard about Academic versions is correct. They are not upgradable.
If you want to run a version of FCP that is compatible, you have two options.
    1. purchase a used PPC computer (G4/G5) and run your version of FCP 5 on it.
    or
    2. purchase a version of FCP designed to work on intel processors (v5.1 or higher).
#2 can be satisfied by purchasing a used version of 5.1 (full retail install) on ebay. Alternatively, if you qualify for academic pricing, FCS3 can be had for around $900 rather than the $1300 for the retail version.
On another subject, the MacBook is hardly the ideal editing platform no matter what version of FCP you are running ...
